In this episode of Room to Grow, Joanie and Curtis talk about teaching strategies for remembering in mathematics, such as mnemonic devices, tricks, and gimmicks. They challenge the notion that teaching with tricks is inherently bad, and discuss how to determine when a strategy intended to help students learn might actually work against their understanding of the underlying mathematics. For instance, “FOIL” and “SOH-CAH-TOA” are both frequently taught in high school math classes, yet one is a way to remember mathematical definitions (not a trick!) and the other is a random association for a limited procedure (a trick!). So what about if a student creates their own strategy or trick while learning math?  Join our hosts in trying to make sense of how and when remembering strategies are helpful and when they might be more harmful. We encourage you to explore the resources below, referenced in this episode:Nix the Tricks – available to download for freeThirteen Rules that Expire is an article from Teaching Children Mathematics (NCTM membership required) about commonly taught ideas in elementary school that don't support long-term learning. This episode features a series of comments and reflections and perspectives on the power of youth voice in helping young adolescents figure out what they care about and who they are, and the worth they see in themselves. First, we hear from Juleny Santa Cruz, Youth Council and Project Manager for Mikva Challenge, a Chicago-based organization that pioneered a type of experiential civics learning programming they call “action civics.” We also hear from researchers and program professionals from the University of Virginia's Youth-Nex Center for Effective Youth Development: Abby Gillespie, Director of Strategy and Engagement, and postdoctoral research associates Faith Zabek and Ashlee Sjogren. Together, they share the core elements of the Mikva program as well as some of the broader research base on youth voice, calling out its importance in early adolescent development, the role of educators in making room for and amplifying youth voice, and setting up learning environments where youth voice can be elevated to authentic youth participation. We then mostly hear from young people. Ten young adolescents - Hailey, Da'una, Amya, Nelly, Liz, Honesty, Michelle, Xitlali, Luis, and Laurice - talk about their experiences participating in the Mikva Challenge program. They share how Mikva offers a venue for them to engage in issues important to them and their community, for fostering positive relationships, and for developing confidence and a positive self concept. Additional Readings and ResourcesMikva ChallengeAction CivicsProject SoapboxYouth CouncilsElections and Campaign Experiences“Youth Voice in the Middle Grades."Ladder of Meaningful Youth Involvement.“Motivation, Engagement and Student Voice.""Measuring and Understanding Authentic Youth Engagement: The Youth-Adult Partnership Rubric."“Youth-adult partnerships: Entering new territory in community work and research.""Strengthening student voice initiatives in high schools: An examination of the supports Needed for school-based youth-adult partnerships.""The adoption of innovation in youth organizations: Creating the conditions for youth-adult Partnerships."“The psychology and practice of youth-adult partnership: Bridging generations for youth development and community change."Remaking Middle School is launching a Middle School Listening Tour! Do history, civics, and empathy work together? YES… yes, they work together! And if we allow them to work together, our students gain an appreciation for the act of “doing” social studies and history. We can make history come alive when students have the opportunity to explore cultural, gendered, and racial perspectives within the context of a historical period as part of their own understanding of civic agency.  In this episode, we sat down with Dr. Katie Perrotta, Assistant Professor of Middle Grades and Secondary Education with an emphasis on social studies education in the Mercer University College of Education. Assistant Professor of Earth and Space Sciences at West Chester University, Christopher Roemmele, teaches Science Education Methods classes (Secondary, Middle Grades, and Elementary) and Introductory Geology. Christopher was a classroom teacher before becoming a university professor. He supervises student teachers, runs committees, prepares lessons, presents at conferences, and publishes his research. He encourages science teachers to not just provide vocabulary and have students write definitions but to reflect on how they are teaching science skills. He encourages teachers to think about “What’s Your Story” when writing your lesson plan. Think about the lesson as a story with a beginning, middle, and end. Think about where you want students to go by the end of the story. He says to not worry about time break down for each part of the lesson when creating the lesson plan. Christopher discusses using demos to help students make connections. He encourages us to think of the story as a “Bridge of understanding from the known to the unknown”.

Have you ever thought about utilizing podcasts in your lesson plans? In reviewing the many ways the "influencers" use podcasts when they write books or want to get information out, why can't we as teachers do the same with our content? This episode briefly explores three ways that middle school teachers (or any age group for that matter) can use podcast applications in the classroom and within teaching strategies: 1. Directions for assignments. 2. Interviewing and engaging student participation. 3. To pre-record articles for the classroom, to allow time for vocabulary breakdown. Not mentioned in the podcast, but it aids in behavior management. A teacher can walk around the room while their podcast of an article is playing... an added bonus! Thanks for listening! Subscribe.

Please meet Dr. Maureen Sutlive Taylor, a graduate of Georgia State University in 1975 with a Bachelor's degree in Secondary Education Behavioral Sciences. She has taught in both middle school and hugh school, where Dr. Taylor recognized that the very high academic standards should not be requirements for private schools only. After raising her son, Chris, Dr. Taylor returned to teaching fifth grade. Her passion of giving a private school education to public Title 1 schools has driven her instruction for 25 years.   While growing in the study of learning and academic achievement, Dr. Taylor pursued a Master of Education in Middle Grades focusing on Science, Social Studies and Language Arts. Being a firm believer in transdisciplinary instruction, she successfully used Language Arts as an integral part of Science and Social Studies. Continuing with her desire to be a lifelong learner, Dr. Taylor chose to explore early childhood learning and its impact on higher grades. She received her Specialist in Education – Early Childhood –grades k-5. This enabled her to have the scope and sequence of early learning. Although Dr. Taylor is not in favor of standardized testing as the main assessment to gauge learning, she understands that a baseline and indicators of achievement are critical when comparing student growth. As part of this belief system, she received her Doctorate in Educational Leadership. and found that building communities and relationships with parents is the key to academic success. Throughout her educational career, Dr. Taylor found time to engage her in her love of writing and completing her first novel FORGIVEN.   She is currently writing a nonfiction book on living with and taking caring of elderly parents with dementia, something she learned first-hand.
