We inaugurate the brilliant Taiwanese master Edward Yang with a conversation about his transcendent 1994 social satire A Confucian Confusion. Following up his staggering masterwork A Brighter Summer Day, Yang turned his attention to Taipei in the 1990s at the height of its rapid evolution into a port city of global capital and the effects this shift had on the value systems and relational dynamics of the city's people. Evoking the slapstick and breackneck pacing of more popular modes of cinema - including the American romantic comedy - the film follows a large ensemble of Taipei's young professionals caught up in the frenzy of capitalism's mechanisms of social order, all in pursuit of an irresolute alternative that can liberate them from their self-made misery and help them achieve something approaching an honest, authentic way of life. We begin with a conversation about Yang as artist, his preoccupations, his distinct convergence of heart and wit. Then, we break down A Confucian Confusion's ensemble, how the characters reflect Yang's feelings about Taipei's consumer-friendly, corporatized status, and how honest desire is sublimated into the cold calculus of business language - a phenomenon that presages and predicts modern tech culture and its bastardized language of wellness and attunement. Finally, we discuss the film's unique and delicate balance of trenchant political satire and touching character drama; how Yang achieves a profound and honest reflection of the minor victories and acts of liberation we can achieve within a totalizing capitalist milieu. The only podcast to give Edward Yang the time and space he deserves as one of the all time greatest directors (and Wilson's favorite director)! We end our coverage on Yang with what is considered to be his magnum opus, 1991's A Brighter Summer Day, an intimate epic of teenage angst, romance, and rebellion that also captures Taiwan in a specific era of political and social turbulence with incredible detail. Together, we discuss ABSD's unique visual palette compared to Yang's other non-period work, and go in depth into its thematic concerns regarding Taiwan on a scale both personal and national. Wilson highlights the virtuosic blocking in large crowd scenes, Eli makes a case for proper education as the salve for social ills, and Ben asks, can a film be “too perfect”?Are you lonesome? Goodbye, Dragon Inn (les vår sak) og The Wayward Cloud. The 1991 film A Brighter Summer Day, directed by Edward Yang, is considered by many one of the best movies ever made. The film is set in Taiwan, shortly after the Chinese Civil War, when the country was under martial law, with a political and cultural pressure felt at every level of society. At the center of this intricately plotted four-hour drama is the family of fourteen-year-old Xiao Si'r, whose strong sense of honor and justice is pulled in various directions as he gets caught up in a youth gang and romantically entangled with the girlfriend of a disappeared gang leader. But more than that, this incredibly textured four-hour drama gives the sense of a whole uneasy social fabric. As this is the first Chinese-language film the Criteria hosts have covered, they are joined by film festival programmer Frank Yan, who provides crucial historical and cultural context about Taiwanese history and cinema. Yang rose to fame with elliptical films like Taipei Story and The Terrorisers - which depicted intimate relationships, strained by modernity and Taiwain's unique east/west ambivalence. His dense period piece A Brighter Summer Day established a fascination with family dynamics, which he pushed further with his canonised swansong Yi Yi.

2023 was the year that Overlapping Dialogue went out of control. No one knew where it might land. It soared above the ozone layer like a lethal bird of prey. The whole world was alarmed. Only Kyle & Levi couldn't care less... In our second episode celebrating the cinema of the 1990s, we hitch a ride in the way-back machine and head straight ahead into the year of 1991 with a double feature that would collectively captivate you for nearly 9 hours: A Brighter Summer Day & Until the End of the World! But before we travel through the weighty contexts surrounding both films, we dig into a Blue Plate Special that belatedly celebrates the 2008 HBO miniseries John Adams and finds a distressing degree of comfort in the two most recent entries in the Evil Dead franchise (2013's Evil Dead and the newly released Evil Dead Rise). We make quick work of the deadites and eventually arrive to this episode's marquee pairing: listen as we marvel at the revelatory slice of life cinema of Edward Yang, the reflective yet rollicking magnum opus of Wim Wenders, and ponder the ways in which both works reflect upon and conclude a 20th century reaching its uncertain conclusion. Stay till the at once sweet yet bitter end for a very special gift, Mr. Wenders himself! In his his second appearance on the pod (albeit his first as a communicatory android), the German New Wave auteur reflects on a whole host of topics, ranging from Sam Neill Pop Funko vinyls, his failed attempt to remake Fantasia in live action in the late 90s, and the unforeseen ways Gary Busey impacted his life forever. Movie of the Year

Movie of the Year: 1991Thelma and Louise Will Thelma and Louise shoot and drive its way to our 1991 Movie of the Year? Ridley Scott's Thelma and Louise has a tough act to follow in last week's A Brighter Summer Day. And, stylistically, the two movies couldn't be more different, but in many ways Thelma and Louise tackles much of the same subject matter: male dominance of women, male violence against women, and an air of systemic disinterest—if not out right antagonism—to the plight of women in general. All while wrapping up in just over 2 hours, but I digregs. In this film we see the title characters set out on a road trip that immediately turns into a nightmare, thanks to—you guessed it—dudes. Dudes, bros, jerks, derps, scrubs, and f-boys fly at these two women like bugs through the night air. But, unlike those bugs which harmlessly splatter uponst their windshield, these dudes ruin everything and then come back to make sure they finished ruining everything and THEN force our main characters—played perfectly by Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis—off a literal freaking cliff. Go to heck, dudes, go straight to heck! Nineteen and ninety-one. It was a magical time full of promise and wonder and we have to go back. However, we cannot. We can only move forward. Because we are podcasters, and bravely moving into the future is all we know how to do. All of that, and somehow more, on an all-new Movie of the Year! Mark and Aaron are joined by Scott Nye to hash out the intricate themes, history, and nuance of Edward Yang's A Brighter Summer Day. Given the length and depth of the film, we explored it in detail, distilling the cultural and societal clashes that took place in a pivotal period of Chinese and Taiwanese history. We also compare it to what is considered Yang's other masterpiece, Yi Yi, and we touch on the New Taiwanese Cinema movement. About the film: Among the most praised and sought-after titles in all contemporary film, this singular masterpiece of Taiwanese cinema, directed by Edward Yang, finally comes to home video in the United States. Set in the early sixties in Taiwan, A Brighter Summer Day is based on the true story of a crime that rocked the nation. A film of both sprawling scope and tender intimacy, this novelistic, patiently observed epic centers on the gradual, inexorable fall of a young teenager (Chen Chang, in his first role) from innocence to juvenile delinquency, and is set against a simmering backdrop of restless youth, rock and roll, and political turmoil. Mark and Aaron welcome old friend, Doug McCambridge to talk about Robert Altman's “Don't call it a” comeback film. We touch on the opening tracking shot, what Altman is saying about Hollywood, and yes, we even go into the ending — or both of them. On top of that, we give some tidbits on how to be economical with the Barnes & Noble Criterion Sale. About the film: A Hollywood studio executive with a shaky moral compass (Tim Robbins) finds himself caught up in a criminal situation that would be right at home in one of his movie projects, in this biting industry satire from Robert Altman. Mixing elements of film noir with sly insider comedy, The Player, based on a novel by Michael Tolkin, functions as both a nifty stylish murder story and a commentary on its own making, and it is stocked with a heroic supporting cast (Peter Gallagher, Whoopi Goldberg, Greta Scacchi, Dean Stockwell, Fred Ward) and a lineup of star cameos that make for an astonishing Hollywood who's who. This complexly woven grand entertainment (which kicks off with one of American cinema's most audacious and acclaimed opening shots) was the film that marked Altman's triumphant commercial comeback in the early 1990s.
