What happens when the next generation no longer knows how to restore, preserve, or even understand the cars we love? This week on The Collector Car Podcast, I sit down with Nick Ellis of RPM Foundation to discuss one of the most important missions in the collector car world today: preserving the future of the hobby through education, apprenticeships, and hands on opportunities for young enthusiasts. We talk about the growing skills gap in the restoration world, why preserving automotive craftsmanship matters, and how RPM Foundation is connecting students with collectors, museums, and restoration shops before this knowledge disappears forever. If you care about the future of collector cars, concours preservation, vintage racing, restoration, or simply keeping automotive passion alive for the next generation, this is an episode you do not want to miss.
A wheel stud that “may separate,” airbags that are “misassembled,” and fuel tanks that can leak after a crash. That's not clickbait, that's our recall list. We kick things off with straight talk on the latest automotive recalls, including 2026 Hyundai models, the Tesla Cybertruck, Volkswagen Taos, Land Rover Defender, Audi Q5 seat belt concerns, and even instrument panel display failures tied to the Dodge Charger EV and Jeep Wagoneer S. If you like your car news useful, fast, and a little skeptical, you're in the right place. Then we switch gears into one of our favorite games: the Hemmings Sold Car Roundup. We throw a photo up, you guess the sold price, and we all argue about what the market is thinking. From two vintage Studebaker Commanders and a surprisingly strong AMC AMX to a rough-and-ready Plymouth Suburban with racing vibes, the numbers tell a story about rarity, originality, and the hidden tax of “good luck finding parts.” The nostalgia hits hard with an '85 Camaro chat (yes, T-tops and leaks come up), a massive '76 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible reality check, and a 1964 Shelby Cobra that lives in serious collector territory. And if you've ever looked under the hood of a questionable project car, you'll appreciate the rough 1978 Pontiac Firebird moment, complete with a shop rag doing air-filter duty. We wrap with Jeff's Car Culture and a question that takes us back in time: where did the full-page car ad go? We dig into vintage magazine renderings, old-school newspaper dealership price sheets, and how car buying and automotive advertising changed once everything moved online. If you enjoy automotive recalls, classic car auction prices, and car culture history, subscribe, share this with a car friend, and leave us a review so more listeners can find the show.Be sure to subscribe for more In Wheel Time Car Talk! The Lupe' Tortilla RestaurantsLupe Tortilla in Katy, Texas Gulf Coast Auto ShieldPaint protection, tint, and more!Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. On this episode of the STL Bucket List Show, we sit down with Sean Hamlin, co-founder of VHS Group and Race Haus, to break down how a home services and technology company unexpectedly evolved into one of the most exciting new motorsports experiences in St. Louis.Sean shares how VHS Group began with smart home installations, home theaters, and custom tech builds before expanding into golf simulators—and eventually stumbling into the idea that would become Race Haus after a client requested a custom racing simulator setup. That single project quickly snowballed into a fully immersive racing lounge in Webster Groves, where guests can compete on professional-grade simulators, experience real racing dynamics, and build a growing community around motorsports. He walks through the early days of experimentation, the rapid viral growth on social media, and how Saint Louis embraced the concept far faster than expected. From weekends packed with high-end cars outside the building to competitive leagues forming inside, Race Haus has quickly become a destination for both casual fans and serious racing enthusiasts. The conversation also dives into what it's like building multiple businesses at once—balancing leadership, family life, a full-time career, and entrepreneurship—plus the importance of building the right team, embracing technology, and learning when to step back and let systems scale. From smart homes to simulators, from local experiments to national ambitions, this episode is about turning passion, technology, and community into a completely new kind of entertainment business. They discuss: - Building VHS Group and smart home technology services - The origins of Race Haus and the first simulator build - Golf simulators and early tech innovation - Creating an immersive racing experience in Webster Groves - Viral growth and St. Louis car community support - Scaling multiple businesses simultaneously - Leadership, burnout, and entrepreneurial discipline - The role of AI, automation, and technology in growth - Building leagues and competitive racing experiences - Expansion plans and the future of Race Haus - Creating a new entertainment category in St. Louis
In this episode of The MuscleCar Place Podcast, guest host Bernie McPartland sits down with Mecum Auctions Senior Communications Manager David Morton during Mecum Houston for a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at one of the fastest-growing forces in the collector car world. What starts as a conversation about auctions quickly evolves into a deeper discussion about why live automotive experiences still matter in today's digital world. David shares how his background in sports marketing helped shape Mecum's growth strategy, why the company continues doubling down on live events rather than online-only auctions, and how Mecum has effectively become a motorsport-style entertainment experience that draws massive crowds, television audiences, and passionate enthusiasts nationwide. The episode also dives into the rapidly changing collector car market, including the explosion of trucks, SUVs, restomods, and 1980s/90s-era vehicles as younger generations enter the hobby. Bernie and David discuss everything from Broncos and K5 Blazers to exotics, custom builds, Steve McQueen movie cars, and the emotional storytelling that continues driving collector enthusiasm. Plus, Rob Kibbe shares a Dallas Kibbe Racing Update covering Dallas's aggressive summer racing schedule, preparation for the Charlotte Summer Shootout, and the challenge of balancing racing life with getting a Porsche 944 ready for prom season. The post TMCP #647: Mecum Auctions Insider David Morton – Live Auction Energy, Collector Car Trends & The Future of Car Culture first appeared on The Muscle Car Place.

Your car does not usually “die” in one dramatic moment. It wears you down with a stack of estimates, a new noise every week, and that sinking feeling when the shop calls back. We're broadcasting live from the Tailpipes and Tacos cruise-in at Lupe Tortilla Tex Mex in Katy, Texas, and we bring the same energy you get walking a real parking lot full of drivers, hot rods, classics, and daily beaters with stories. Along the way we talk community, the fun of showing up even when the weather threatens, and why we'll always lean toward cars that get driven, not hidden. Stan Holt drops in with racing talk and a deep dive on a serious build: a 55 Chevy wagon project headed toward NHRA-style competition. We get into what it means to chase a “SEMA ready” look while still planning to run it hard, how a project can pivot from a classic 283 and four-speed plan to an LS swap, and what that change does for performance, maintenance, and class strategy. If you like drag racing details, gear talk, and real-world build decisions, this one delivers. Then Jeff's Car Culture turns practical with a clear checklist of car repairs that often signal it is time to sell or trade in: blown head gasket, transmission replacement, air suspension failures, cracked engine block, electrical system overhauls, warped or cracked cylinder heads, heater core replacement, and timing chain or timing belt failure. We also cover what to do when you choose not to fix it, including trade-in, private sale, donation, or handing it off as a project car. Subscribe for more honest car talk, share this with a friend facing a big repair, and leave a review with the moment you knew it was time to let a car go.Be sure to subscribe for more In Wheel Time Car Talk! The Lupe' Tortilla RestaurantsLupe Tortilla in Katy, Texas Gulf Coast Auto ShieldPaint protection, tint, and more!Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. Gas prices are high, but the fastest way to make them worse is chasing “savings” with the wrong plastic. We sit down with Chip Lupo from WalletHub to sort out the confusing world of gas credit cards, gas rewards, and cash back credit cards, including why some gas cards run 30% to 40% APR and the one rule that makes rewards actually work: pay it off in full every month. We get specific about how to choose a card without wrecking your credit score, from hard inquiries and timing your applications to avoiding annual fees that never pay you back. Chip also explains how intro 0% APR offers and sign-up bonuses can be helpful tools or expensive traps, and we talk through a real example of category-based cash back that can boost your fuel savings without changing your routine. Then we zoom in on the pump itself: credit card surcharges, when cash pricing can win, and why using a debit card at the pump is a fraud risk you do not need. After the money talk, Jeff's Car Culture heads into the garage with five tool brands mechanics choose over Snap On, including value picks, specialty options, and warranty-friendly brands that can keep your toolbox strong without draining your wallet. We also share what we are promoting next, including our Tail Pipes and Tacos Easter cruise-in and how to catch the live show.If you like practical car talk you can use today, subscribe, share this with a friend who's always chasing points, and leave us a review so more drivers can find the show.Be sure to subscribe for more In Wheel Time Car Talk! The Lupe' Tortilla RestaurantsLupe Tortilla in Katy, Texas Gulf Coast Auto ShieldPaint protection, tint, and more!Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. Ferraris go pretty fast. It's crucial that drivers be able to see out the windows when they're doing 200 MPH. But that's just not the case with a recent batch of luxury sports cars the Italian automaker built for the U.S. So, they're being recalled. The company sent out an alert for 80 12Cilindri models, which retail for around $500,000, because the windows are too tinted. Earlier this month, Ferrari said it was alerted to the issue with the black rear and side windows on certain units, which feature more tint than what's allowed in some parts of the U.S.As the automaker pointed out in its recall, automobile glazing with less than 70% light transmittance can impair the driver's visibility and lead to a crash.According to Tint Wiz, many U.S. states are totally fine with tint levels with less than 70% light transmittance. But markets like Florida and Illinois set their legal window tint levels much lower.#Ferrari #Recall #LuxuryCars #Supercar #CarRecall #AutoNews #Automotive #SportsCars #CarProblems #FastCars #CarCulture #LuxuryLifestyle #ExoticCars #Driving #CarEnthusiast #VehicleSafety #CarTech #Speed #HighPerformance #AutoIndustry #Engineering #Innovation #CarNews #USRegulations #CarLife
Fog, freeway noise, and the sound of classics rolling in one by one, that's how this live car talk morning starts at the Tailpipes and Tacos cruise-in at Lupe' Tortilla in Beaumont, Texas. We're set up right off I-10, talking with the people who actually show up early, bring their rides, and keep local car culture alive. Stan Holt joins us with the kind of stories you only get from someone who lives in the drag racing world. We get into racing plans for Belle Rose, Louisiana, what makes a “racer's track” worth the tow, and the characters and cooking that turn a race weekend into a community. Then it's off to the garage: his 1955 MGTF purchase that went from “average” to jewel-like with smart fixes, plus bigger builds like a modernized 1957 Ford Fairlane with a Coyote drivetrain and airbags, and a wild 1955 Chevy wagon Super Stock project where engine and transmission choices get debated in real time. We also shift gears with Jeff's Car Culture segment on gas cap design, capless fuel systems, evaporative emissions, and why a loose cap can trigger a check engine light. Finally, we spotlight Shirley's Kids, a charity rooted in the drag racing community that helps kids facing financial and health challenges, and we share how a simple donation ties right into the Tailpipes and Tacos experience. Houston car culture is hiding in plain sight, and once you know where to look, your weekends fill up fast. We're set up at the Mega Meat Cruise In and we're talking with the people who connect the dots across the city, from meet promoters to motorcycle crews, plus the small details that keep a cruise-in fun instead of chaotic.First up, we hang with Omar from HTXCars.com, a new Houston-focused car meet and car show platform built to list events across Houston, Stafford, Richmond, Sugar Land, and beyond. He explains why a central calendar matters, how short recaps and live streams help people discover new spots, and why the real win is meeting owners and families out enjoying the scene together. We also talk about the seasonal reality of Texas events: spring is perfect, summer pushes meets into the night, and venues get cautious when takeovers ruin trust. Then we switch to two wheels with Jonathan from Only The Few Bike Crew out of Katy. We get into group ride culture, community-focused events, and beginner-friendly motorcycle advice, including why 300cc to 400cc bikes are a smart start, what to know about dealerships versus marketplace buys, and how to think about mods and value. Branden Robles - better known as @m0t1v3_auto - has become a key voice in the Dallas–Fort Worth car scene, documenting events, spotlighting builds, and connecting people through the culture he loves. The line forms where the growl echoes. We're set up beside Camp Jeep at the Houston Auto Show, and the first thing you notice is the 30-degree hill and the calm voice of a pro driver explaining exactly how a Wrangler keeps its cool. We brought the track manager, Nick Hoy, into the hot seat to decode the six-obstacle course, the Wrangler 392's idle climb, and why a single button for sway bar disconnect can be the difference between spinning and sticking. From there, we open the hood on modern off-road tech without the buzzwords. Nick walks us through the electronic lockers, Off-Road Plus, and the front-facing camera that turns a blind crest into a confident line. It's a clean progression from the old days of manual hubs and pliers in the mud to quick, precise controls on the dash. We talk Gladiator, poke at the Grand Cherokee's air suspension and skid plates, and admit that not every model is meant to crab-walk a rock garden. Still, capability shows up across the Jeep lineup, and the indoor course proves it in minutes. We shift gears into memory lane with Jeff's Car Culture: a countdown of the best-selling American vehicles of all time. The Model T's assembly-line revolution, the Chevrolet Impala's long reign, Silverado and Ram solidifying the truck era, and the F-Series towering over all—each nameplate marks a chapter in how America drives and works. The list is a conversation starter, and yes, the Oldsmobile Cutlass earns its spot.To turn inspiration into miles, we map five spring road trips that reward any capable car or SUV: the flowered overlooks of the Blue Ridge Parkway, Montana's Going-to-the-Sun Road drama, the quiet curves of the Natchez Trace, shoulder-season serenity on Pacific Coast Highway, and a burst of Texas bluebonnets along the Willow City Loop. These routes pair perfectly with a fresh set of tires, a full tank, and a curious mind.If you're at NRG Center, follow the signs to Camp Jeep for a guided ride, then swing through the indoor display to poke around the screens and seats—including the head-turning TRX. Listening from afar? Tap follow, share the show with a fellow gearhead, and leave a review with your pick: which Jeep would you take up that 30-degree hill?Be sure to subscribe for more In Wheel Time Car Talk! The Lupe' Tortilla RestaurantsLupe Tortilla in Katy, Texas Gulf Coast Auto ShieldPaint protection, tint, and more!Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. Awards shape buyer decisions more than most of us realize, so we sat down with veteran juror and radio host Jack Nerad to peel back how North American Car, Truck, and Utility of the Year actually get chosen. Fifty independent journalists, a year of testing, multiple voting rounds, and a marathon drive event near Detroit all lead to three names everyone talks about. We walk through the process, the politics (or lack thereof), and the real criteria that separate buzz from substance: class leadership, value, significance, innovation, and everyday usability. The car finalists tell a story of contrast—Nissan Sentra updates, a reborn Honda Prelude, and a radically flexible Dodge Charger that spans two and four doors, a potent turbo six, and an all-electric variant. Hear why the jury rallied behind the Charger's breadth and execution. On the truck side, the Ford Maverick Lobo edged out Ram 1500 and Ram 2500 by pushing the compact pickup idea further, balancing capability with size, price, and clever packaging for daily life. And in the most crowded arena of all, the Hyundai Palisade claimed Utility of the Year by delivering family comfort, available hybrid efficiency, and true bang for the buck in a segment where buyers vote with their wallets. We also tackle EV realities. Charging gaps remain a friction point—even in California's backyard and especially across Texas—so vehicles that offer both electric and gasoline paths are resonating. Jack explains how the jury weighs those infrastructure challenges against performance and innovation without drifting into tech cheerleading. To round things out, we shift gears with Jeff's Car Culture—five of the longest drivable tunnels in the U.S.—and Mike's Driving Destinations, highlighting five standout car museums from the Petersen to the Henry Ford.If you enjoy smart car talk that mixes industry insight with real-world practicality, follow and subscribe. Given that we lost Brian Wilson recently, and there's been a lot of talk about the elimination of the affordable subcompact, I thought we could reflect a bit upon America's obsession with the automobile. The BIG auto; the POWERFUL auto. Especially here in Los Angeles - you gotta have wheels - and you'll be judged by what you drive. Once, while stopped at an intersection in my little Saturn, I was heckled mercilessly by some tweens on skateboards. On the other side of the argument sits the Goddess Shania Twain - that Canadian Everywoman who raised her siblings single handedly, then went on to conquer Country Pop music with songs like That Don't Impress Me Much - where she declares that you may have a hot car, Hoss, but, that don't make you a man in her book. She puts it all in perspective.LITTLE DEUCE COUPE / THE BEACH BOYSNowadays, I drive a Prius, but occasionally I'll admire the sleek lines of a Dodge Challenger, and fantasize that I could be that muscle car guy. The Prius is wimpy - ya gotta go for The BIG auto; the POWERFUL auto. I can trace this fascination back to '63, when at the age of 10, I heard Little Deuce Coupe for the first time. I didn't know what Deuce Coupe meant, but that was ok because Brian Wilson sang “You don't know what I got!” I now know that the title refers to a 1932 Ford Coupe, and the whole California culture of the drag race was popularized around the country with the invocation of this souped up Franken-car.There were other mechanical beasts in the Wilson canon: There was the T Bird of Fun, Fun, Fun; the “duel in the sun” opponents - the corvette Stingray vs the Mopar described in Shut Down, Granny from Pasadena's brand new shiny red super stock Dodge, and their anthemic ode to the Chevy 409, but The Deuce Coupe was purportedly Brian's favorite. You can thank Brian's lyricist Roger Christian for these automotive articulations, but Brian knew how to implant them into our hearts and minds with his rhythms, melodies, and harmonies.THAT DON'T IMPRESS ME MUCH / SHANIA TWAINThis is where the macho mechanical mythos gets deflated: Shania lets us know in no uncertain terms what makes a man desirable - it's not your looks, brains, and especially not your car. It's your courage to commit, your ability to listen, your kindness and tenderness. These are the qualities that win you a place at her table and in her bed.Because she doesn't need you. Next to Taylor Swift, Shania is the most successful female Country recording artist. whose albums have spent 97 weeks as the Top Country Albums chart leader. Former husband/producer Mutt Lange may have helped to craft those catchy Pop hits around an image of an accessible Wonder Woman, but even if she hadn't become a mogul, I have a feeling that Shania's integrity and sense of who she is would never have faltered.
Signed into law by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, The Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956, otherwise known as the National Interstate and Defense Highways Act, ushered in an unprecedented era of roadbuilding in the United States, becoming the largest public works project in the country's history. Designed to spread freedom and prosperity — and, as the name implies, provide for the national defense — these highways tore through urban neighborhoods, destroying once-thriving communities and displacing countless citizens, many of them people of color. In this special report, we examine just what inspired this massive project and the effects it had on two communities, one in New Orleans and one in Syracuse. Denver's public transit agency RTD has had a rough couple of years. Almost a full year of track maintenance and slowdowns led to a nearly 20% decline in light rail ridership, but ridership across the network overall is down, too. With even more light rail maintenance expected in the next few years, RTD's budget is projected to hit multi-billion deficits in the early 2030s. So what's the plan to get back on track? And if the answer is more money, who will pay? RTD CEO and General Manager joins producer Paul Karolyi to discuss what she thinks the biggest problems are, her plan for the budget deficit, and what she does when her train is late. Paul referenced Nate Minor's reporting for CPR about the senior leaders who left RTD in recent years and quoted the emailed statement Johnson shared with the Denver Post for this recent story. Johnson quoted some recent data on ridership numbers and talked about RTD's new tap-to-pay technology. This episode is part of a special series called "Changing American Car Culture" funded with the generous support of The Helen and William Mazer Foundation. As historian Peter Norton documents in his book, Fighting Traffic, the death and destruction caused by the introduction of automobiles into U.S. cities in the early part of the 20th century caused a lot of people to challenge the notion that such machines would ever become popular. In response, autmobile companies, car dealers, driving enthuisasts, and others went on the offense, creating the culture that gave rise to the mass adoption of cars and the phenomenon of forced car dependence. In this special episode, producer Ilana Strauss brings us a story that begins with the pushback against automobiles, the fight for speed governors, and the unlikely partnership between a Studebaker dealer and a young academic who manufactured the rules and norms that came to shape American streets at the expense of anyone who isn't in a car. Episode SummaryEver wandered through a European parking lot and thought, “Why don't we get cars like that in America?”In this episode of The Straight Shift, The Car Chick, dives into the sleek, smart, and downright sexy European cars that U.S. drivers can't buy — and all the bureaucratic, political, and marketing nonsense that keeps them off our roads. She covers everything from trade wars and tariffs to global platform sharing, brand confusion, and she reveals the legendary naming fail in automotive history.Key TakeawaysEuropean automakers build smaller, more stylish, and more driver-focused cars — and American drivers are missing out on some genuinely great vehicles because of it.The combination of differing safety standards, emissions regulations, and high startup costs makes it difficult for foreign brands to justify entering the U.S. market. The current trade and political environment is unpredictable, which makes expanding into new markets — especially the U.S. — too risky for many automakers.Global platform sharing allows manufacturers to design multiple models on the same architecture, meaning many cars are more closely related than consumers realize.Vehicle naming strategies often change by market due to language, marketing, and cultural factors — though occasionally they lead to some embarrassing translation fails.Resourceswww.TheCarChick.comwww.DrivingInTheUK.comhttps://www.youtube.com/@CarChickTVwww.CupraOfficial.comwww.Vauxhall.co.ukwww.Skoda-auto.comwww.dsautomobiles.comYou can view a full list of resources and episode transcripts here. Two years ago this week I was in Manhattan covering the Vision Zero Cities conference hosted by the great nonprofit Transportation Alternatives. At a panel discussion titled, Supersized SUVs, Mega Trucks, and Regulatory Failure, one of the speakers made me sit up and take notice: He railed against feckless leadership that wouldn't improve bus service, critiqued the "war on cars," called for higher taxes on large vehicles that are more prone to kill people, and spoke about traffic victims and transportation policy with the candor, clarity and conviction you'd expect from an activist. But this wasn't an activist. It was an elected official. He was a member of the state assembly named Zohran Mamdani. Yes, the same Mamdani who might very well be New York City's next mayor in a few weeks. This audio from that 2023 conference is a detailed view inside Mamdani's mind and it reveals how he approaches what are still some the most important road safety and transportation topics of the day.Links:BikePortland recap of this panel discussionMamdani campaign websitePlease support this work! We love our cars, but do we understand how much they are costing us? The lifetime cost of driving in the U.S. is estimated at almost $800,000—including maintenance, insurance, fuel, parking, and depreciation. And then there's the cost in lives. Cars have killed 60 to 80 million people since their invention—that's more than the deaths of WWI and WWII combined. Is there a better way?
