Olam haBah is often translated as “the world to come” and is used in reference to the afterlife. In this context, I'm using it to describe “the world as it could be” which includes dignity, equity, and liberation. The idea that each person is a letter in the Torah is rooted in Megaleh Amukot (Va'etchanan 186:1). I learned about the concept of “ratzon” from my teacher, colleague, and friend David Jaffe, Founder and Executive Director of Kirva. Rabbi Tarfon's quote comes from Pirkei Avot 2:16. One source for Rabbi Simcha Bunim's teaching is Tales of The Hasidim Later Masters by Martin Buber. The Mary Oliver line comes from her poem, entitled “The Summer Day”. This quote has been misattributed to Courtney Carver. It is instead referenced by Carver in her book, Gentle: Rest More, Stress Less and Live the Life You Actually You Want. I received Kohenet smicha from The Kohenet Hebrew Priestess Institute in July 2017. The chorus of voices affirming that I am a Kohenet was recorded during the ceremony. The Torah reference about ceasing from work comes from Breishit 2:2. My understanding of Jewish people as “people of the book, body, and earth” has been informed by a number of sources and teachers; notable among them is Rav Kohenet Taya Mâ. Though I have come to understand that many somatic therapists and practitioners have written about the way that trauma can cause people to dissociate from their bodies, I learned it from a variety of sources and forums, none of which credited a source. Blizu Ljubljane in malo pred Domžalami, točneje v Brinju, že od leta 1966 obratuje Reaktorski infrastrukturni center, ki je del Instituta ''Jožef Stefan'', največje javne raziskovalne ustanove pri nas. Šestdeset let je minilo od začetka delovanja tamkajšnjega eksperimentalnega oziroma raziskovalnega jedrskega reaktorja TRIGA Mark II. Reaktor je takrat dobavila ameriška jedrska družba General Atomics, infrastrukturo centra pa so zgradila domača gradbena podjetja. Z njim in v njem so raziskovalne skupine inštituta, sorodnih raziskovalnih ustanov pri nas, od Univerze v Ljubljani pa do skupin iz tujine, uporabljale napravo za treniranje in šolanje uporabe reaktorjev in jedrske tehnologije nasploh, za raziskave z nevtroni in žarki gama, za izdelavo radioaktivnih izotopov. Predvsem pa je bil ta reaktor, sicer razmeroma šibke toplotne moči 250 kWatt, temelj za izgradnjo zmogljivosti in znanja za Slovenijo kot jedrsko državo. Danes zvečer bo tako predsednica republike na slovesnosti v Ljubljani inštitutu za izjemen prispevek k razvoju slovenske znanosti, jedrske varnosti, energetske neodvisnosti in mednarodne prepoznavnosti Republike Slovenije ob 60-letnici delovanja reaktorja TRIGA podelila državno odlikovanje, zlati red za zasluge. Predstavitev šestih desetletij delovanja tega reaktorja, osnovne in visoke šole za upravljanje in delovanje jedrske elektrarne v Krškem, so nam novinarjem predstavili sedanji ključni ljudje centra in reaktorja, ki jih bomo slišali v oddaji. Prvi bo na vrsti, od lani direktor IJS, prof. dr. Leon Cizelj, poznavalec jedrske tehnike in že dolgo povezan z delovanjem reaktorja, sledil mu bo vodja Reaktorskega infrastrukturnega centra dr. Anže Jazbec, predstavitev pa bo sklenil prof. dr. Luka Snoj, vodja reaktorja TRIGA, sicer pa tudi vodja Odseka za reaktorsko fiziko – F8 na inštitutu. Černobil, Sovjetska zveza, 26. april 1986. Ura je 1:23 ponoči. V jedrskem reaktorju pride do parne eksplozije, ki raztrga pokrov in odpre sredico. Sledi še druga, močnejša eksplozija, ki uniči zgornjo zaščitno plast iz jekla in betona. Oblasti nesrečo sprva zamolčijo. Svet zanjo izve šele dva dni pozneje, ko nad Evropo zaznajo povišano radioaktivnost. Radioaktivni oblak zajame velik del celine. Tudi v Sloveniji, približno 1300 kilometrov od Černobila, zavlada negotovost. Meritve pokažejo povišane ravni radioaktivnega joda in cezija. Najhujše posledice pa so čutili — in jih še danes čutijo — prebivalci širšega območja v današnji Ukrajini. S strokovnjaki in poznavalci analiziramo takratno dogajanje ter posledice nesreče po štirih desetletjih, prinašamo pričevanja in arhivske posnetke. Contributor: Travis Barlock, MD Educational Pearls: What is an internal jugular catheter (IJ) and when do we use it? IJs are catheters that can be placed in either the left or the right internal jugular vein to provide central venous catheter (CVC) access. CVCs can be placed in other locations other than the internal jugular vein (i.e. subclavian vein or femoral veins). IJs are used when the patient may require long-term venous access or have to receive hyperosmolar solutions (such as solutions with high glucose content for parenteral nutrition); solutions with extreme pHs (9); or vesicant drugs (drugs that can cause tissue necrosis with extravasation). They are not to be confused with EJs (external jugular vein catheters) which can be placed in difficult to peripherally catheterize patients. EJs function similarly to a peripheral IV. The advantage of IJs is their location in larger veins brings them closer to direct access to the heart (i.e. the right internal jugular vein will provide immediate/quicker access to the right atrium to the heart.) What are concerns of using a right internal jugular catheter versus one in the left? The right internal jugular vein provides quick access to the heart via the right atrium, making it ideal in critically ill patients who may require vasopressor support. However it is also the site commonly used for additional cannulation procedures such as hemodialysis, pulmonary artery pressure measurements, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and transvenous pacemaker placement. These procedures are not uncommon in critically ill patients who also required a CVC for initial hemodynamic support via vasopressors. Gharaibeh et al. found that patients who received a right IJ and hemodialysis had a higher need for re-insertion of the hemodialysis catheter (40% compared to 2.6% in the left IJ group). Furthermore, it was found that with a right IJ, hemodialysis catheters had to be exchanged by a guidewire in 23% of those with a right IJ as opposed to 0.9% in the left IJ group (a guidewire exchange is often considered a salvage technique to try and maintain access). Big Takeaway? If you are able to obtain an IJ on the right, you can likely obtain one on the left, and if considering longitudinal care for your patient, consider obtaining an IJ on the left to allow for future critical access in the right IJ. Rabbi Josh Feigelson was appointed Executive Director of IJS in January 2020 and became President & CEO in April 2022. He received ordination from Yeshivat Chovevei Torah Rabbinical School in 2005, and served for six years as the Hillel Rabbi at Northwestern University, where he also earned a PhD in Religious Studies. In 2011, Josh helped found and served as Executive Director of Ask Big Questions, an initiative of Hillel International, which won the inaugural Lippman-Kanfer Prize for Applied Jewish Wisdom. Josh has also been a consultant and Senior Fellow at The iCenter for Israel Education. Most recently he served as Dean of Students at the University of Chicago Divinity School. Josh is a Wexner Graduate Fellow and was the founding co-chair of the Wexner Fellowship Alumni Committee. He is the author of Eternal Questions: Reflections, Conversations, and Jewish Mindfulness Practices for the Weekly Torah Portion (Ben Yehuda Press, 2022). Josh lives with his wife Natalie and their three sons in Skokie, IL.

De nachtmerrie van Google komt uit: het krijgt er nog een concurrent bij. Van een bedrijf dat al bewezen heeft heel succesvol te kunnen zijn. ChatGPT-maker OpenAI komt namelijk met SearchGPT, een zoekmachine die informatie van websites voor je kan samenvatten. Google drijft op de inkomsten van de zoekmachine, kan het wel de aller grootste blijven? Verder deze aflevering: een beursbedrijf dat geld afpakt van aandeelhouders. We hebben het over FlowTraders dat toch geen dividend gaat uitkeren, maar dat geld gebruikt om te handelen.  Je hoort over Nike, dat op slinkse wijze belasting ontwijkt. Dat doet het via Azië, maar ook via ons land.  Apple is in China uit de top 5 van grootste smartphoneverkopers gevallen. Tegen de eigen regels in verlaagde het al eens de prijzen van iPhones, gaat Apple dat nog eens doen? Minder vragen zijn er bij Heijmans en Basic-Fit. Het was een beursdag met veel drama. Om te beginnen met Besi. Dat kwam met goed nieuws (flink meer nieuwe orders), maar de directie boorde het enthousiasme de grond in. Het wordt een 'vlak kwartaal'. Gevolg: beurskoers hard onderuit. Het volgende drama is Universal Music Group. Het muzieklabel van Taylor Swift en Taylor Swift kwam gisteravond nabeurs met cijfers. Die lieten zien dat ze minder verdienden door streaming en abonnementen. Dus wilden beleggers wilden massaal van hun aandeel af. De beurskoers praktisch onthoofd. In deze aflevering hebben we het over al het drama op de beurs. Want o ja, ook AirFrance-KLM kwam met een omzetwaaschuwing én Ford heeft zijn slechtste handelsdag in 13 jaar tijd. We bespreken waar het mis gaat en wat er nog meer misgaat. Is er dan helemaal niks leuks meer? Jawel! Unilever. Dat ging eerder niet zo lekker, maar daar is superheld Schumacher de laatste maanden flink aan de slag. Brussel start een onderzoek naar de drie techreuzen. Met de nieuwe techwet moest er een einde komen aan hun monopolie. Maar amper twee weken na de invoering lijkt de EU ze al te betrappen. Apple, Meta en Google-moeder Alphabet zouden nog steeds niet aan de regels voldoen. En dus is de volgende stap: een boete van tot wel tien procent van de wereldwijde omzet. Blijven ze doorgaan met het negeren van de regels, dan wordt dat zelfs twintig procent. Hoe serieus moeten we dat nemen?  In deze aflevering bespreken we de impact van zo'n boete. En los daarvan moet ook het verdienmodel van de bedrijven serieus op de schop. Zo moet Apple concurrentie van buiten de App Store toelaten. En Meta's betaalde, reclamevrije abonnement wordt waarschijnlijk nu alweer de nek omgedraaid. In China pakken ze het nóg rigoureuzer aan. Overheidscomputers mogen niks meer te maken hebben met processoren van Intel en AMD, en het besturingssysteem van Microsoft, Windows. Dat is een reactie op eerdere maatregelen vanuit de VS. President Joe Biden verbiedt zijn bedrijven om veel van hun chips naar China te sturen omdat die zouden worden gebruikt voor spionage of zelfs militaire doeleinden. En bij Boeing is het einde verhaal voor de topman en twee van zijn medebestuurders. Die kondigen hun vertrek aan. Dat volgt allemaal op de problemen bij het bedrijf, er vliegen links en rechts panelen en wielen af tijdens vluchten. Dat voorspelt Nico Inberg van De Aandeelhouder. Apple kampt met een trits aan problemen. De week begon met een pijnlijke noodoplossing. Apple loopt zo ver achter op AI-gebied dat het moet aankloppen bij concurrent Google. Maar later deze week werd het pas echt pijnlijk: de Amerikaanse regering spant een proces aan tegen Apple. In deze aflevering bespreken we hoe topman Tim Cook zich hieruit gaat vechten. Want het blijft niet bij deze problemen. Hij moet ook de Chinese markt terugveroveren en met een nieuwe gadget op de proppen komen. Ook Nike moet met iets nieuws komen. De klanten zijn uitgekocht en de omzetgroei staat stil. Na meer dan 100 jaar heeft Unilever geen trek meer in ijs. De ijsdivisie, met merken als Magnum en Ben & Jerry's, gaat in de verkoop. Het onderdeel wordt een beursbedrijf óf los verkocht aan een concurrent. Ook grijpt het bedrijf hard in: 7500 banen worden geschrapt. Deze aflevering hebben we het over de strategie van Unilever. Die chip wordt volgens Nvidia de basis voor computers. Gaat dit de beurskoers helpen of wordt dit de eerste keer dat Nvidia teleur gaat stellen? Verder hebben we het over de legendarische George Lucas, de man die onder meer Star Wars verzon. Hij meldt zich in een gevecht met een activistische aandeelhouder. Een aandeelhouder die het op de directie van Disney heeft gemunt.Je hoort waarom de energietransitie mislukt is en wat de gevolgen zijn van de renteverhoging van de Japanse centrale bank. True friendship, just like service, requires inconvenience. If someone isn't willing to inconvenience themselves for you then you may have reevaluate your relationship with them. Doesn't mean they are bad people, but it could very well mean y'all not as close as YOU think y'all are. The same goes for you as well, if you aren't willing to inconvenience yourself for someone else then you probably don't consider them a friend. Ijs we all need to think about these things the older we get so we are fully aware of who is a villager and who is a visitor. When we know what circles we fall into we would be more at peace with the people around us. As Senior Core Faculty at the Institute for Jewish Spirituality (IJS), Rabbi Sam Feinsmith directs the Clergy Leadership Program and serves on the faculty of Yesod: Foundations for Deepening Jewish Mindfulness Meditation. He is passionate about practicing and teaching Jewishly-grounded mindfulness meditation and teaching Hasidic text through a mindfulness lens, making these texts accessible to spiritual seekers who don't have the knowledge or skill to access them on their own. Before joining the faculty of IJS in 2016, he taught Judaic Studies at Chicagoland Jewish High School, Illinois, and the Heschel School in New York, where he spearheaded initiatives to foster teen spirituality and mindfulness as foundations for lifelong thriving and love of Jewish learning.He is a co-founder of Orot: Center for New Jewish Learning, a hub for contemplative Jewish learning and living.
