So the conferences were both in this old engine building factory that had been refurbished into like a venue for events. And so they have all of the old. Like the cranes in there and stuff. I mean, obviously, they're not moving it or using it. But yeah, you go in and they had a big screen down all the way at the end of the room. And they had speakers rooms upstairs. And anyway, it was it was very, very cool, then you a lot of the people that they had at the event, were some of the people that were kind of pushing the state of the art forward in JavaScript. And so and some of them I knew already, some of them we'd had on like JavaScript Jabber, which is our big podcast on JavaScript. And so yeah, so just meeting up with him in person, you know, getting to know him shaking hands. I recorded a handful of interviews.10:00 - The difference is, and it's kind of the same thing that I did with Microsoft for five or six years, is if you go as a speaker or influencer, it's a different thing. If you're going as an attendee, sometimes even some of the conferences just going as a speaker, it's different than going as an influencer. If you're one of the people that they go out of their way to get to the conference, then a lot of times, they'll pull out all the stops.19:30 - The other version of that is none of these technologies standstill. None of them do. So even if you're working in a place that is hey, we're going to stick on the version we're at, we're gonna use the technology we know. You find all kinds of opportunities learning the next thing in the technology you're already an expert in. Maybe you want to go with indie game development, which is one area that I want to branch into. It's super popular, and there's a ton of stuff going on, and it's getting easier. So what we were doing is we were releasing shows in a number of different areas. JavaScript is something that I think a lot of people have heard about if you've been on the web. We had shows on Ruby, React is JavaScript for the web. So we have shows about all kinds of stuff like that. I'm looking, at this point, pulling together a couple of shows and putting out products now and that's where the rebrand came in. So some of the new shows are going to be on game development and then the products are going to center around Front-End Web Development, game development, machine learning, security, stuff like that. Those, those are the the areas where, like it or not, I mean, that's where things are growing. So effectively, the rebrand came into play when I went through a period in 2019, where the not so nice people on Twitter decided they wanted my business to crash and burn.10:00 - Ultimately that was the other thing, a lot of the questions I get are, how do I advance? How do I move out? How do I move ahead? My answer is mostly you got to do stuff that people aren't doing. So that's consistent learning, consistent practice, consistent growth, meeting other people. It is building your network beyond your local community, making contributions to the community, putting content out there, if you're doing those kinds of things, that's where the growth is. So that's where my focus has been now is, I'm gonna give you content to level up your technical skills. That's kind of obvious to most people in the development space, and to people who think about the development space for about half a minute. 20:00 - Initially, I hired my executive assistant or virtual assistant, she's in Philippines, by the way, which is a great source for that. I would just hand her tasks that needed to be done. She at this point succeeded, so we've hired somebody else to help her. If there's something she can't figure out how to do, or she knows that I already know how to do, then I'll record a video and I'll send it over. But probably half of the stuff she does, at this point is stuff that she has determined will get us toward our goals. So she just takes the lead on a lot of that. At this point, what we're doing now is we're getting clear on our strategic plan. You can collect consumer insights and find out what drives them, their pain points, and what problems they are trying to solve. You then find out how your product or service will improve their lives. Changes in the market can happen in very sizeable measures, so if you only ever take small steps of change, then you could fall behind. Be strategic and take risks! Execute testing and see what your buyers are responding to. Be sure to allow recipients the ability to unsubscribe from your emails. Learn from them and see how they carry out initiatives. Your success in building muscles depends on your food choices, how much you eat and without a doubt the level of your training. Therefore, it is important to thoughtfully consider the food you choose to eat.    Speaking of muscle building, bulking is quite common in bodybuilding. What is bulking? You ask.    Bulking is where you supply your body with excess calories in order to add weight (muscles and fat). It's important to note there are two types of bulking: clean bulk and dirty bulk. Simply put, clean bulking is when you subject your body to clean sources of carbs and dirty bulking is when you subject your body to any food sources including junk to add calories.    These two types of bulking arguably have their own benefits, but which one is the best for you?                   This week we have a great conversation about all our themes, goals, and motivations for the coming year and the benefits of reflection. Happy 2019, cheers to new things! Takeaways: Keep track of your goals and themes. Write them in your calendar so you know what to reflect on at the end of this year. It’s never too late to write down your goals and themes for the year! Taking the time to look at how you spend your time and how you want to spend your time will make every other minute that you spend much better. Talking about Themes, Goals, and Motivations  Michelle’s theme: focus. She has noticed that she has a bad habit of focusing on things she doesn't need to be, so she decided to reflect on something that she can constantly take with her wherever she goes, whatever she is doing. Michelle’s practical motivation: Creating an actual process for how she gets things done at work. A travesty, she does not have a process.   Brandi’s theme: finish (imperfectly). "I was thinking about the word completion, but I realized I didn't have to be all fancy, so I just stuck with the word finish." In the book "Finish" by Jon Acuff.  One line that really stood out to me was, "the less people aim for perfect, the more productive they become." "I don't think I realized how that idea of perfect paralyzed me until I read that in the book. I've also realized that I've developed a problem for finishing things even though I'm great at starting them." As for my personal theme, it's "patience". I don't know what that means yet, but I'll see how it unfolds as the year goes on.      Brandi’s business-y goals: Design 6 to 12 book covers classics or not, I don't know yet. Craft a doable social media plan where I can have something to post every day and not like wonder what I'm going to post. Design 5 to 10 posters. I don't know of what. Figure out a MailChimp newsletter. Get sponsors and affiliate marketing for the blog and the podcast. A Honey and the Bug Kickstarter campaign for Jasmine in February. I wrote a date, so I have a goal. Book more workshops and speaking gigs. Write for blog and podcast two times a month. I want to paint, screenprint, and do some wood burning. My beauty commentary project that I've been wanting to do forever, where I do, you know, for those of you who don't know what this is, I want to do lettering on women's faces about beauty and take pictures and do something with it. I haven't fully fleshed out. Launch Patreon, that's done. By the time you hear this podcast will be able to go onto our Patreon and search Design Speaks and be able to support us. The last two are like sort of these would be nice but not 100 percent necessary because I'm very ambitious and there may be too many things on this list already, but Develop a course and maybe figure out some other sort of passive income. Whether it's like downloads or some sort of workshop that people can like just watch. And lastly, update my website.    Tips that can make a difference in helping you reach your goals: Physically write down your goals. Then, hang those written goals somewhere where you will see them regularly so you have the satisfaction of checking them off Share your goals with somebody. They can encourage you to finish those goals not just start the, and they can celebrate with you when they are completed.    Q & A From Ink+Volt Planner What do you want to leave behind this year? Brandi: Regret for things undone. Sadness over things I lost. Disappointment in myself for not reaching goals that I couldn't because of circumstances I had no control over Michelle: My apathy. In order to do that you need to understand who your peers are, which companies you need to pursue, and what kinds of sales cycles you have. Sales and Marketing should not work in isolation; they need to work together. They should have the same goals, results, metrics, and measurements to increase efficiency. Align your Sales and Marketing vocabulary. Both are looking at the same numbers, so why should they use different terms for the same things?  Avoid calling the people you're trying to sell to as prospects. Every once in a while, we share a re-broadcast and this week we re-broadcast a podcast that was recorded about one year ago on April 11, 2016. It's about creating content that resonates with a technical audience. The topic is about engaging with a target audience by creating educational, entertaining or engaging content. This discussion is especially germane if your audience is primarily made up of engineers or otherwise technical folks. MM 075 - Create Content that Educates, Entertains and Engages Guest: Rick Ellis, Engineering Audience Director at CFE Media Highlights: CFE media knows engineers are a unique audience with unique pain points, needs, wants, etc. Content Marketing Institute (CMI) Research says 82% of B2B manufacturers use content marketing but only 18% consider themselves effective. Content quality is more important than quantity content. Good content must do one or more of the 3 e's;  educate, entertain or engage. Engineers don't want advertising speak or marketing fluff. They want useful, real, accurate information. It's important to keep your audience engaged over a long selling cycle.  Give them content to make them want to come back. Rick and Bruce share a couple of stories about the power of reciprocity. Perhaps the reason only 18% are not effective is that the tactic is new for manufacturers and most are still learning (getting their sea legs). Rick talks about Schneider Electric as an example of a B2B manufacturer who is doing a great job with content creation and content marketing. 107% increase in enewsletter open rates and 1000% increase in page views because of using educational content. Manufacturing marketers should keep going with content marketing - this stuff works! Interview Questions: Question 1 –  How does content creation work together with content marketing? It looks like content creation (relevant and engaging) is a common challenge for manufacturers?  What do you hear from your network as to why it is such a big challenge? Question 2 – Why is/should content and the process to creating content be important to manufacturers?  Could you elaborate on the type of content you advocate?  Question 3 –  As mentioned above, only 18% of those manufacturers using content marketing feel it is effective.  What do you think is going on here?  Why is it so hard to be effective with content? Question 4 –  Could you offer a real life example of a manufacturing or industrial company that is successful with content creation and what deems success?  Question 5 –  Given the effectiveness of content marketing and assuming effectiveness correlates to effectiveness in content creation, is it something manufacturers should continue to pursue to gain advantage over competition or should they give up and revert back to the marketing tactics they’ve been using for decades like trade shows and print ads?  (elaborate on the answer) Challenge Question: This week we have a challenge question coming from the Chicago area, a mid size manufacturer of measurement instruments. “We love the idea of content marketing by offering helpful useful information to our target audience. The problem we have is that we are once removed (through our manufacturing rep network)  from the end user who is the beneficiary of the useful information.  Have you seen content marketing work with a dealer or manufacturer rep in between? What is the best way to approach it?” Share content with your top distributors to support them with content development. You can share useful content direct to the end user or direct to the distributor, both work well. If you’ve ever had challenges with other people in your life, especially parents, you will identify with this episode. On some level, we choose our parents to be our spiritual teachers. Being close becomes complicated as we transition from being a child to being an adult.  Listen in as Jessica is feeling conflicted between wanting to live her own life and wanting her parents approval.   Consider/Ask Yourself: Can you relate to wanting to please people you love?
