Elias Tarabay remembers Aug. 4, 2020, clearly. He arrived home after having a late lunch with a friend. He was living in Beirut, the capital city of Lebanon. His house had a balcony that looked out at the city's ports. Just as he settled in, he heard a loud explosion. Tarabay was working as an editor for a local newspaper at the time and he thought he would take the video to send back to his office. Then a second large explosion rocked the Beirut port. The explosion killed at least 214 people, according to official records. Thousands were injured. It was one of the largest non-nuclear explosions in history — the result of hundreds of tons of ammonium nitrate igniting after a fire broke out. The explosion tore through the city with such force that it caused a tremor across the entire country that was heard and felt as far away as the Mediterranean island of Cyprus, more than 200 kilometres away. It would soon emerge in documents that the highly combustible nitrates had been haphazardly stored at a port warehouse alongside other flammable material since 2014 — and that multiple high-level officials over the years knew of its presence and did nothing. The event galvanized people to demonstrate in the streets, asking for government accountability and in the days following the explosion, several cabinet members announced their resignation. On Aug. 10, 2020, Beirut's prime minister, Hassan Diab, announced he would be stepping down from his position. On this episode of What happened to …? Erica Vella revisits the days that followed the deadly blast and finds out if anyone has been held accountable. She also learns how Lebanon's economic crisis has made it difficult for the country to rebuild. Contact: Email: erica.vella@globalnews.ca See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Finally, EPISODE 40 is out with none other than Rachel Tarabay! A long episode in the making, Rachel, as she so aptly puts it, has mastered the art of procrastination. Yet despite that she owns this fact, she has still managed to handle her daily work, create a movement called Demokratia in Lebanon and enjoy life in its simplicity and beauty. Rachel has engulfed herself in learning about why we take things at face value, having had her life change after reading the book “Sapiens”, as well as her idea of cutting away from the hustle life we live through Henry David Thoreau’s book “Walden”. Rachel was not shy to speak her mind, asking challenging questions like why she would be the one to determine what is right or wrong and why we should conform to societal norms and paths that are predetermined for people. Although she had hated writing about herself, Rachel also gave us a profound notion about the dying authenticity in our world and how sometimes, you can’t even be true to yourself, even when you want to.

Link:http://www.cbr.com/the-cw-reveals-season-finale-synopses-for-flash-arrow-supergirl/ Arrow EP Explains Why Prometheus Keeps Getting So Personal (Date: 10 May 2017) During an interview last week, Arrow showrunner Wendy Mericle explained why they felt it was time for a villain who challenged Oliver on a personal, human level for the first time since Deathstroke in season 2. “It's very personal this year, and we wanted to do that for a number of reasons,” Mericle said. “WE've done a different villain this year. It's not that it's easy, but using violence — which Chase and Oliver still do throughout the season — is sort of the go-to. What's been interesting to see this year is to see that but the underpinnings of it being so psychological and so manipulative and so built on the underpinnings of what Chase knows about Oliver and who he is. This was the perfect storm — a great way to change up the villain and to get inside of Oliver's head in a season that we needed to. We needed him to be reflective and talking and looking back at his past, and Chase was the perfect spark to light that fire.” Link:http://comicbook.com/2017/05/11/arrow-prometheus-robert-queen/ Arrow Season 6 To Explore the Conflicts Between Being Mayor and Being Green Arrow (Date: 10 May 2017) During a recent interview, showrunner Wendy Mericle told ComicBook.com that the man in the hood will still be spending his days at City Hall come 2016. Mericle said, “What's going to be a central question for season 6 is how can he do both? We've played with that in the past in different ways before, but I think that the success of what he's done in the mayor's office and his ability to have impact is going to raise those stakes to a different level and hopefully create some great stories.” Link:http://comicbook.com/2017/05/11/arrow-season-6-oliver-mayor/ Matt's Inside Line: Scoop on Arrow, Once, Chicago Fire, Elementary, Blindspot, The Flash, NCIS and More! (Date: 09 May 2017) Black Siren is a badass villain. What can we expect? —You can expect… badass villainy. “She comes back as part of Chase's plan,” says co-showrunner Wendy Mericle. ” Chase knows exactly what he's doing, and he understands how unsettling seeing somebody that looks like Laurel Lance is going to be for the rest of the team,” her “dad” Quentin included. “And from a writing perspective, it's just fun storytelling. Katie Cassidy does an amazing job as Black Siren, and seeing her take on Dinah, or her take on Lance, is going to be fun.” This will be the first Arrow season finale that does not take place in Starling City. Can we expect the same kind of intense fights, or will this be more of an emotional showdown? —“Both,” answers Wendy Mericle. “One of the fun parts of having Prometheus and Oliver going toe-to-toe this season has been they're both really great fighters, but by the same token, Prometheus is a tremendous psychological villain and he's going to hit Oliver right where it hurts. That's going to be a double whammy for him in the finale.” Link:http://tvline.com/2017/05/09/arrow-season-5-spoilers-black-siren-returns/ GENERAL DC TV NEWS Supergirl EP Teases General Zod's Arrival, Comic-Inspired Appearance (Date: 06 May 2017) The “how” and “when” of General Zod's arrival on Supergirl remains a mystery, but thanks to executive producer Andrew Kreisberg, at least we know what the legendary DC Comics villain will be wearing. He says that Supergirl‘s Zod (played by Smallville actor Mark Gibbon) will be sporting “a little bit of that Nazi uniform look you'd see in the comics in the '60s. Visually, he has a different look from the mechanical armor that Man of Steel did, or the real spacey clothes Richard Donner's version had. Link:http://tvline.com/2017/05/06/supergirl-general-zod-spoilers-new-season-2-interview/ The Flash boss on how everyone will react to that Savitar reveal (Date: 08 May 2017) As revealed during last week's episode of The Flash, Savitar is actually a future version of the Scarlet Speedster, a heavily scarred Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) hellbent on killing Iris (Candice Patton) for as-yet-unknown reasons. Suffice it to say, Team Flash will certainly be shocked by this turn of events during Tuesday's episode. “What's interesting about people's reactions — we certainly wrote it, but just the way the cast performs it — is it's one thing to have seen that giant metal suit and hear that there is a version of Barry inside of it,” executive producer Andrew Kreisberg tells EW. “It's quite another thing when you actually come face-to-face with what's inside.” Plus, watch a trailer for the final episodes of season 3. Link:http://ew.com/tv/2017/05/08/flash-savitar-barry-video/ Matt's Inside Line: Scoop on Arrow, Once, Chicago Fire, Elementary, Blindspot, The Flash, NCIS and More! (Date: 09 May 2017) Will we ever see Supergirl‘s Mon-El in a super suit? — T'would be nice to see the boy do his thing not in street clothes, and ideally by the Season 2 finale. When we delivered your Q to showrunner Andrew Kreisberg, he answered, “I can't say right now, but I wouldn't be surprised if one day you got to see that.” Link:http://tvline.com/2017/05/09/arrow-season-5-spoilers-black-siren-returns/ NEXT EPISODE Promo for Next Week's: Episode - “Missing” (Date: 11 May 2017) Article:http://www.cbr.com/arrow-missing-trailer/ Episode: “Missing” [Season 5 Episode 22] Air Date: Wednesday, May 17, 2017 Summary: Black Siren returns to give Chase help; Felicity plans a birthday party for Oliver; Lance is angry with Rene for missing the custody hearing about his daughter.
