In this episode of Trekking Through Compliance, we consider the episode Spectre of the Gun, which aired on October 25, 1968, Star Date 4385.3. On a mission to establish contact with the reclusive Melcotians, Kirk ignores the message of a space probe. The landing party encounters a Melcotian who informs them they are an outside disease that must be destroyed. Their trespassing is to be punished by death, and the pattern of their death will be taken from Kirk's memories. As Kirk's ancestors pioneered the West, the landing party finds itself teleported to Tombstone, Arizona, on October 26, 1881. Desperately, Bones and Spock cooperate to build a tranquilizer bomb that will incapacitate the Earps. Scotty volunteers to test the potion Bones has cooked up. Despite Bones' careful preparation, it does not work. Spock is the only one who understands the significance of this fact, saying, "You do not seem to understand. It did not function. But it must function." Spock realizes that nothing around them is real; the whole scenario is taking place in their minds. They end up at the OK Corral, and the Melcotians, impressed that Kirk did not kill, then extend an invitation to establish relations with the Federation. After ignoring a warning buoy to stay away, Captain Kirk and his landing party are punished for violating Melkotian space by being made to appear as the Clanton gang in a facade of Tombstone, Arizona, on October 26, 1881. According to history, the "Clantons" -- in this case, Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scotty and Chekov -- will meet their fate later that day at the OK Corral in a gunfight with the Earps and Doc Holliday. Captain Kirk tries everything he can to avoid the showdown and prove his peaceful intentions, but history cannot be changed -- or can it? Despite all of the cards stacked against it (and there were many), Season 3 of "Star Trek" got off to a pretty terrific start -- at least, in terms of its production order -- with "Spectre of the Gun," superbly written by the always-reliable Gene L. Coon (under his pseudonym "Lee Cronin"). While the end result is basically a rehash of the first season classic "Arena" (also written by Coon), "Spectre of the Gun" ultimately succeeds as one of the third season's finest episodes, thanks to a clever and surreal setting, intense direction by Vincent McEveety, a stellar score composed by Jerry Fielding and strong performances from the entire cast. Meanwhile, we all learn a valuable lesson about why Star Trek is superior to real TV westerns. A classic.

Spectre of the Gun was the sixth episode of Star Trek's third season to air, with an alien race punishing the Enterprise's unwelcome visit with a theatrical form of execution. In this episode Gerry and Iain discuss the nature of reality. On a mission to make contact with the reclusive Melkotian race, Kirk orders the Enterprise to ignore a warning buoy and approach the alien planet. On transporting to the surface he, Spock, McCoy, Chekov and Scotty are soon placed in a Wild West fantasy setting by an angry Melkotian (Abraham Sofaer). Drawing on a remarkably niche level of historical knowledge, they place themselves at the OK Corral where they must face off against Wyatt (Ron Soble), Morgan (Rex Holman) and Virgil Earp (Charles Maxwell) along with Doc Holliday (Sam Gilman) to save the town and it's residents including the barman Ed (Charles Seel), Sheriff Behan (Bill Zuckert) and Chekov's sudden love interest Sylvia (Bonnie Beecher). Spectre of the Gun was directed by Vincent McEveety, the last of his six episodes in the chair. The writer was Gene Coon under his Lee Cronin alias. Asked about Diggle's greatest challenge going into Season 6, Ramsey replied, “We have to break Diggle. I think Season 6 we'll see Diggle get broken in a way he hasn't been broken before. It already starts in [the first episode], and I think there's a certain amount of it that will continue throughout the season. I think it's an arc for Diggle that we haven't seen, even beyond his brother coming back to life and killing his evil brother and that leading to the death of the Canary.” Diggle's brokenness will — in part — come from the trauma of his island experience will “greatly affect the whole team.” Diggle is typically an open book — keeping both Team Arrow and Lyla informed about what's going on in his life. That day reps a one time move to Monday for the special occasion. The crossover concludes Nov. 28 with The Flash in DC's Legends of Tomorrow. Commenting on the crossovers going from four nights last season to two this fall, CW president Mark Pedowitz said, “Last year's (crossover) was the most successful week in CW history in terms of ratings and everything. Pasdar will play Morgan Edge, a ruthless real estate developer who will find himself at odds with Lena Luthor. Lumbly will play J'onn's father M'yrnn J'onzz, a pacifist religious leader on Mars. Grobglas will play Psi, a psychic villain who uses people's minds against them. Tremblay will play Ruby, a smart kid who's fascination with Supergirl lands her in serious trouble. Miller will actually return in a recurring capacity, but he won't exactly be the Leonard Snart we came to know and love in seasons one and two. He'll instead be playing a brand new version of fan-favorite character, which should lead to some interesting interactions between him and Mick. During the panel, executive producer Phil Klemmer teased, “Mick Rory needs his pal, but unfortunately he's not going to get the version of his pal that he remembers.” Meanwhile, McDonough will be upped to a series regular and will also come with his own, more dangerous, changes. "We'll be meeting a new version of Damien Darhk, a little less silly, a little more formidable." Arthur Darvill will also be back as Rip Hunter, but in a recurring role, and it sounds like he'll be coming into conflict with his former teammates. “Last season, the Legends were the only game in town,” Klemmer said. “Now they're competing with the best and brightest. Rip Hunter has reconstituted what the Time Masters were, so the existential question for the Legends is where do we fit into this universe?” As for new additions, a new villain will arise in the form of Kuasa, Vixen's granddaughter. Rovner added: “We wanted to keep Alura's presence on the show because it really connects Kara to Krypton and her roots and what it meant to see her family and her planet destroyed. It's an emotional grounding that's always important.” However, there's a good chance Mon-El ended up in the Phantom Zone — you know, the same Kryptonian prison that Alura had a hand in sending criminals to, so what if she escaped the destruction of Krypton and ended up there herself? Another dodge from the EPs: “Where Mon-El is and how he comes back is the central mystery of our season,” Queller said. “But the theme of this season is what does it mean to be human? Speaking to ComicBook at San Diego Comic-Con this weekend, Grant Gustin confirmed that while it's still a long time from happening, it's been the goal to eventually adapt Crisis on Infinite Earths on the show . "We don't really talk about it on a yearly basis but it was mentioned early on and that's a goal. Obviously we'd have to go I think ten years to reach that, so there's a possibility for sure. It'll be fun to get there." The massive multiverse event saw the collapse of multiple parallel universes, along with the "death" of The Flash himself. The story has been hinted at since the pilot episode of the show, where the Reverse Flash views a newspaper headline from the future stating that The Flash has "vanished in a crisis". Showrunner Todd Helbing also spoke to CB about the upcoming season 4, which he promised will be "fun" again after the "doom and gloom" of season 3. Quantico star Tracy Ifeachor will play the character. Since Kuasa is Mari's sister, that also makes her the granddaughter of Amaya, who is slated to be a main character in Legends Season 3. In one set of photos, an actress is robbing a bank in a red dress, while other photos show the same actress running after a bus in a rather noteworthy casino outfit. Fans were quick to recognize the casino dealer outfit as that belonging to the DC Comics villain Becky Sharpe, a.k.a. Hazard. Hazard has appeared throughout the DC Comics mythos as a member of the Injustice Society, and was the granddaughter of the original Gambler. Animation is celebrating the tenth anniversary of its direct-to-video films featuring DC Comics' heroes with a massive 30-film collection. The set will collect every movie from the past decade, from Superman: Doomsday, the very first film in the series, to the as yet unreleased Batman and Harley Quinn. The collection will also feature the animation studios' five “DC Showcase” animated shorts – The Spectre, Green Arrow, Jonah Hex, Catwoman and Superman/Shazam: The Return of Black Adam, along with a host of unannounced special features. All in all, the collection will be comprised of 32 separate Blu-ray discs. The Blu-ray box set will arrive in stores on November 7, and the set will be available for Digital Download on August 15. Earlier in the episode, as Oliver, Slade, and Talia were exploring Lian Yu, the camera panned across the forest floor to reveal a set of skeletal remains wearing a black leather jacket. The body was that of Konstantin Kovar, who wouldn't die at Oliver's hand for about another 20 minutes in the episode.
