To prep for the making of their new album, Animal Collective holed up in a rented cabin just southwest of Nashville for a month-long stay back in 2019.  They ended up with a dizzying amount of songs that they all agreed on — in fact, they wrote enough for at least two albums. The first, Time Skiffs, was released in 2022, and they waited for just the right time to unleash Isn't It Now?, which dropped on Domino a few weeks ago. Clocking in at 64 minutes, the album is their longest yet, a place where they could sonically stretch out and spread out into their own. Two decades and 12 studio albums into Animal Collective's far-out career, Isn't It Now? is a jewel in their crown. Of the nine tracks, “Stride Rite” is an elegant standout.  Revisit Animal Collective live on MBE in 2016, hosted by the late KCRW DJ Eric J Lawrence.

On today's episode, I talk to musician Dave Portner AKA Avey Tare of Animal Collective. Originally from Baltimore County, Dave met his future bandmates Josh, Brian and Noah in high school where they played music together, but it wasn't until they all found themselves in New York in the early-aughts that they officially became Animal Collective. The first album as Avey Tare, Spirit They've Gone, Spirit They've Vanished, also doubles as the first Animal Collective album, and since its release on FatCat in 2000, they've written 10 more albums, the latest of which, Time Skiffs was released on Domino last year. On his own, Dave has written and collaborated on over half a dozen albums and EPs, and his latest, 7s, came out just last week, also on Domino! Secondly, we have the latest of many team-ups between Animal Collective drummer and co-founder Panda Bear and legendary Spacemen-3 producer Sonic Boom, RESET, the finest work either have released in years. We also use this album as an excuse to look back on the comeback album Animal Collective dropped earlier this year, TIME SKIFFS, to assess how these artists have revitalized their artistic output by rediscovering the power of their individual strengths unified.
