Though widely celebrated for the alienating brutality of 1998's OBSCURA, Canadian metal legends Gorguts have released many brilliant albums, though perhaps none more conceptually and musically accomplished than their fifth and most recent LP, which delves into the band's fascination with Tibetan Buddhist faith and the Chinese invasion of 1950. Since their inception in 2011, Californian death metal machine Skeletal Remains have almost made it their personal mission to fly the flag for old school metal.Heavily influenced by late 1980s and early 1990s outfits like Pestilence, early Gorguts, Death, Obituary and Morbid Angel, Skeletal Remains have built themselves a reputation for delivering a massive sonic wave of destruction with each outing and have now set their sights on Australia!Kicking off at Brisbane's Mansfield Tavern on November 10, Skeletal Remains plan to weave their way around the country before finishing with a New Zealand assault that promises to remind concert goers just how good death metal can be.HEAVY caught up with vocalist/guitarist Chris Monroy not long after the band touched down in Brisbane to find out more."We just got in this morning, so we're a bit jet lagged," he laughed, "but we're fucken stoked to be here and stoked to start the tour tomorrow. We can't wait to see everybody and everybody's reaction to the shows. I really hope that everyone's ready, because we sure are ready as fuck. We've been wanting to do this for a long time so we're really excited to finally be here."As mentioned, this will be Skeletal Remains first trip Down Under, so we ask Monroy what fans can expect from the shows."We're pretty straight forward, nothing crazy," he offered. "We're straight up, in your face death metal so if that's what you like I think you will be highly satisfied (laughs). We're just super fucken stoked to finally be here."In the full interview, Chris talks more about the tour and what to expect, planning a tour to a country for the first time, the early days of Skeletal Remains and where they fit in, refining the band's sound and taking influences, making that sound your own, moving to a major label and what changes that brought, their US tour with Morbid Angel next year and more.

This week we're breaking down two exciting new records involving artists that are alone talented, but bring out extra strength in each other through the power of collaboration: first up is the new LP from Danger Mouse and Black Thought, CHEAT CODES, one of the year's finest and slickest hip-hop records that showcase both producer and MC at the top of their games. Secondly, we have the latest of many team-ups between Animal Collective drummer and co-founder Panda Bear and legendary Spacemen-3 producer Sonic Boom, RESET, the finest work either have released in years. We also use this album as an excuse to look back on the comeback album Animal Collective dropped earlier this year, TIME SKIFFS, to assess how these artists have revitalized their artistic output by rediscovering the power of their individual strengths unified. Also in this episode we have hilarious and unhinged conversations about Tool, death's dynamic shroud, TobyMac, Owl City, and of course, Muse, that you will not want to miss... Tonight's episode of Terminus is another lean, cold, efficient one, but for good reason- this is the first half of a double-header recording session, the second being a long-awaited new episode of Terminus Prime! On the new bonus show, we cover Absu's Tara and Bilskirnir's Wotansvolk, but you can't hear it unless you send me the 16 digits on the front of your credit card, the expiration date, and the 3 digit security code on the back. And maybe your billing address too. Send that just in case. The first half of our show is dedicated to the eagerly awaited debut full length by Astral Tomb, the young death metal upstarts from Denver whose previous EP we covered last season. Astral Tomb plays truly bizarre, experimental death metal that's equal parts Gorguts and Frank Zappa, but the primary DNA might surprise you- slam death and bludgeoning beatdown hardcore. Does this head-on collision of high and low culture result in brilliance or confusion? Without question, the former- this immediately jumped onto our preemptive album of the year lists and we guess it will for you too. On the flipside is the new record by Ostots, long running Basque black metal band who make a lateral move into slightly symphonic but by no means "nicer" territory. Drawn from the well of mid-00s trenchcoat obscurity, Ostots makes harmonically challenging and deceptively complex music from simple building blocks. This is a band which etches out rich yet rigid forms not unlike a 19th century charcoal sketch- highly detailed but crafted with sharp, dangerous angles. In some sense quite challenging, but undoubtedly highly worthwhile. 0:00:00 - Intro 0:04:06 - Astral Tomb - Soulgazer (Blood Harvest) 0:48:32 - Interlude - The Stooges - “Fun House,” fr. What can you say that hasn't already been said about the guys in Blood Incantation? Whether it's their incredibly deep and sprawling slabs of death metal like Starspawn or Hidden Histories of the Human Race or their other musical endeavors that read like a primer of the best extreme metal of the last 10 years (Spectral Voice, Stormkeep, Wayfarer)...it seems no matter what they put their hands in, it comes out righteous and heavy. So it's no surprise that their latest left turn, the ambient experiment Timewave Zero (Century Media Records) manages to retain the signature sound of the band even as it stretches into the furthest reaches of space without the raging riffs of down-tuned guitars to power it. We sat down with 3/4 of the band (Isaac, Paul and Morris) to discuss how the collaborative process works when you're creating an ambient record, the close-knit nature of the Colorado scene, keeping riffs fresh and alive in a world where almost everything has already been done, and so much more (just wait until the episode shifts to the majesty of Gorguts). This is a killer conversation that just reinforces howe vital and essential Blood Incantation is to the extreme metal scene, so put down that fidget spinner, grab your beverage of choice and settle in for a wicked edition of the Nine Circles Audio Thing.9C LINKS: Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram

Dreams of Consciousness Podcast Episode 207 features an interview with Erol Ulug of Teeth. Dreams of Consciousness has been on the Teeth hype train since their Unremittance debut and their subsequent split EP with Fister. The California band represent the evolution of "dissonant death metal", taking the influence of Gorguts and Immolation, while giving it their own unorthodox, convention-defying spin. I spoke with Teeth guitarist/vocalist Erol Ulug about the "Nuns With Guns" tattoo that led to his long collaboration with his bandmate, Justin Moore, and how their previous band Wageslave shaped Teeth's musical direction. We also discussed his jazz background, and the challenges he faced as both a band member and studio engineer/producer during the creation of the band's latest EP, Finite. My thanks to Erol for speaking with me, and to all of you for listening. Yautja plays lurching, uncomfortable music, so it is fitting that their new album is called “The Lurch.” I first met Kayhan back in approximately 2010 when I was on tour with Weekend Nachos and we stayed at Kayhan’s place in Birmingham, Alabama. At the time, Kayhan was in a band called Legion (funny enough), and since then has gone on to play in several excellent hardcore and metal projects like Coliseum, Die Young, and — of course — Yautja. Yautja’s most recent record is fantastic, so I wanted to get Kayhan on the podcast to discuss how they write such weird but catchy songs. The conversation also took a detour into some of Kayhan’s wild experiences working at his family’s convenience store during a pandemic, so stick around for that as well.
