Episode Summary:In this episode of First Cheque, Cheryl and Maxine sit down with James Tynan of Square Peg to explore why EdTech might be one of the most misunderstood (and underinvested) sectors in venture capital. James recounts his early days bootstrapping a startup in Australia's tough 2001 tech climate, and the lessons he took with him to Khan Academy—where he witnessed firsthand how technology, when done right, can revolutionise education.Together, they dive into the massive shifts happening in learning today: how kids are skilling up at breakneck speed thanks to platforms like Scratch, YouTube, and AI tutors; why the “Prussian model” of schooling persists; and where personalisation, assessment, and vocational learning could unlock new investment opportunities. James also offers candid advice for early-stage investors trying to spot the next breakout idea in an era of AI-fueled growth—and shares why stepping away from the “prestige path” (like skipping Stanford) was one of his biggest and bravest decisions. Whether you're an EdTech founder, an investor, or just intrigued by how fast education is evolving, this episode is a must-listen.Key Takeaways:00:00 – Intro02:16 – James's first big bet – Starting a company in Australia's early 2000s “hellscape” and the lessons learned07:18 – Why MOOCs weren't the answer – The early EdTech hype, misconceptions about online courses, and how Khan Academy did things differently11:12 – Assessment as the control point – How exams and credentials shape mainstream education and what might disrupt that model15:08 – AI's impact on education – Could personalized, AI-driven learning (and cheating) force schools to rethink how we test knowledge?18:20 – Kids, dopamine, and the next-gen learning paradox – Balancing entertainment and deep learning, and why “edutainment” rules24:00 – VC skepticism vs. reality – Why it's so hard to invest in K–12 EdTech, and where vocational and adult learning might be more promising32:00 – Rapid AI adoption – From legal tech to healthcare, how ambient tools are skyrocketing and what it means for founders37:00 – Wedges, moats, and growth – The playbook for AI startups moving from “just a feature” to a sustainable product42:00 – James's “big kahunas” moment – Choosing Khan Academy over Stanford and why walking away from “prestige” can change everything47:07 – Wrap-up – The future of EdTech, AI's role, and parting wisdom for founders and investorsResources MentionedJames Tynan on LinkedIn – Partner at Square Peg and former operator at Khan Academy. - https://www.linkedin.com/in/james-tynan-ba54b93/Square Peg – The VC firm James Tynan is a Partner at. - https://www.squarepeg.vc/Khan Academy – Free world-class education for anyone, anywhere.College Board + Khan Academy Partnership – Free SAT and AP test prep.Ambience Healthcare – AI for clinical documentation and patient notes.Harvey AI – Legal AI platform disrupting law firm workflows.Sponsors:First Cheque is supported by our wonderful sponsors:Vanta automates up to 90% compliance, getting you audit-ready quickly and saving you up to 85% of associated costs. Welcome to Media Club Plus: a podcast about diving into the media that interests us and the stories that excite us. The King is already gone, but there's a castle full of ants desperate to find and protect him. Gon and Killua have a brief encounter with Netero and Zeno on their way to find Pitou. Killua especially is having some sort of crisis (crises?). Zeno almost has words of warning for the boys, but instead says "hey man don't look at me you figure it out". Meanwhile, Ikalgo immediately raises everyone's suspicion and Knuckle has to tap in for a thoroughly beaten Shoot. Oh yeah and there's a new entry in the "most paranoid guy" category: Welfin. He sees Bloster hear Ikalgo call Leol "Hagya" and has a sincerely impressive meltdown. This week we cover episodes 113-115, titled An x Indebted x Insect, Divide x And x Conquer, and Duty x And x Question. Welcome to Media Club Plus: a podcast about diving into the media that interests us and the stories that excite us. It's been almost 20 episodes since the Extermination Team took a train to East Gorteau to prep for an attack on the castle and almost 40 since Gon and Killua warped to Kite, by chance, officially starting their journey to the most dangerous place on earth. What seemed like a simple plan, to give cover for Netero to fight the King by separating the royal guards, is now a confusing mess. Netero showed up, Zeno Zoldyck in tow, in a hail of nen bombs, accidentally wounding Komugi. Because of this, the King chose to separate himself. Job done? Well, King or no, there's still a house full of ants to deal with. This week we cover episodes 110-112, titled Confusion x And x Expectation, Charge x And x Invade, and Monster x And x Monster. Next episode we'll be covering episodes 113-115, titled An x Indebted x Insect, Divide x And x Conquer, and Duty x And x Question. The Fed's next steps are the biggest question of the day and for 2025. William Lee says the FOMC can't pause rate cuts, otherwise small business and banks will suffer. William talks about the services fending off "stubbornly high" inflation and the rate he believes the Fed should steer toward. ======== Schwab Network ======== Empowering every investor and trader, every market day. No Remorse No Regret (Counterstriker's Revenge) by Ian Worrall Amazon.com Once a victim... ...now a killer. At the age of 19, Melissa's hopes and dreams were literally drowned when she was stuffed in a sports bag, tied to a cinder block and thrown into the sea. Mistaken for a shipment of dope, she is rescued. Indebted to the man who rescued her, she dispatches his enemies and carries on a personal side mission enacting revenge on behalf of women who've been raped. But the serial killer who left her to drown resurfaces. And goes on his own personal mission to take out the one that got away. With the police hunting them both, who will win the cat and mouse game?About the author Hello and welcome to my author page. I accomplished a goal and dream to write a novel, that being No Remorse No Regret which was followed up by the sequel, No Rest For The Vengeful. I will soon within the next year have the parallel story to No Remorse published along with Message In A Bottle which will be the third, chronologically speaking, in the series. Things I enjoy doing outside of writing, weight training, yoga, martial arts, drumming and archery. I am a lifelong fan of the Edmonton Oilers and I am one of the biggest Iron Maiden fans in the world.

Who are the winners and losers now that California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed off on hundreds of legislative bills? Hoover senior fellow Lee Ohanian and distinguished policy fellow Bill Whalen, both contributors to Hoover's California on Your Mind web channel, join Hoover senior product manager Jonathan Movroydis to discuss why the past month in Sacramento was good news for teen-abuse victim Paris Hilton (Newsom signed a bill she championed) and Los Angeles Clipper's owner Steve Ballmer (his new arena received a late-night alcohol exception); and bad news for Elon Musk (he didn't get his way on a controversial AI measure as his social-media feud with the governor continues). Possibly the worst news is for Californians fond of direct democracy and election integrity (Newsom vetoed a voter ID requirement). Then, the legislature approved a constitutional amendment altering California's recall process which voters will decide on in 2026.

Our culture says that our value is defined by our wealth and possessions. But the truth is, no matter how much money we have, we are still in serious debt! I'm in Los Angeles at the beginning of my Improv exploration. During an advanced class I'm taking, I go out on stage to do my scene. So I'm sitting there, painting my nails in this scene, when my scene partner comes in and starts suddenly lighting fireworks and firecrackers all around me. I go on painting my nails, not reacting to the situation. The instructor stops the scene right there and says, “Kymberlee, react.” I'm thinking, “What do you mean? I'm focused. I'm painting my nails.” She responds, “I need you to react with the fireworks going on around you. What's your point of view on that? Do you care? Do you not care? Even if you don't, we need you to react in some way.” Lightbulb moment. So often, we as storytellers and speakers are so focused on getting to the end of the story or the speech. We're trying to make sure we deliver every line and paragraph correctly that we forget to react and respond to what just happened. And oftentimes, that reaction might just be internal. My guest today, Niccole Thurman, lives a life reacting as an actress, writer, and Improv performer. In this episode of the Storytelling School Podcast, you'll hear about how she does it and answers questions like: What's the difference in choosing how you react within a role or character in life (or through Improv) versus a scripted version? What different facets can flow into creating a variety of characters? And what can you do when you're having trouble adapting to a role or character? What you will learn in this episode: How to best get into the head of a character you're creating (or co-creating) How to deal with rejection as a storyteller (or in life generally) What story element truly makes comedy work and go viral Who is Niccole? Niccole Thurman is a Los Angeles-based actress and WGA award-winning writer. She is the voice of Jabberjaw, Squiddly Diddly and Dee Dee Sykes in the HBOMax series Jellystone. Her past work includes voiceovers and appearances on: Grace and Frankie and Desperados (Netflix); Kenan , Indebted, and Superstore (NBC); A Black Lady Sketch Show (HBO); and Shrill (Hulu). She was also a correspondent on Comedy Central's The Opposition w/ Jordan Klepper. As a writer Niccole has worked on the ESPYs, the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards (hosted By Jimmy Kimmel), Sherman's Showcase (AMC), Baking It (Peacock), Haute Dog (HBO Max), Phoebe Robinson's show Everything is Trash (Freeform), and Robert Smigel's Let's Be Real (Fox). Madonna's debut self-titled album turned 40 years old last week. With hits like “Holiday” and “Borderline,” the icon created a subversive image and influenced women artists who came decades later. The U.S. is potentially losing billions of dollars of productivity amid weeks-long oppressive heat. People can't work in excessive temperatures, businesses must crank up A/C, and customers are staying home instead. Last week's additions to an earlier indictment of former President Trump over the handling of classified documents could undercut his best defense. Lithium is the principal element needed to produce electric car batteries, and now there's a gold rush for it in Afghanistan, spurred by the Chinese. This could give the country an edge in producing EVs.
