Tommy Byrne is every driver's worst nightmare: a natural born racer. Someone who has such an innate feel for driving that driving fast is second nature. In this interview Tommy reveals the truth behind why he didn't stay in Formula 1 and dominate in the way that his abilities predicted. He also discusses his unique speed secrets and a career overlapping with Ayrton Senna. Tommy has something in common with pretty much every top level Champion I've studied from his era of racing. He was a factory driver at Van Diemen in Formula Ford in the 80's. That fact alone doesn't necessarily guarantee success, but what it did guarantee was SHED LOADS of seat time – fine-tuning the chassis – and developing as a driver. Practice perfects the art. My impression from speaking to Tommy is that he's a real seat-of-the-pants cowboy who drove the wheels off everything he sat in. Watching his racing footage, you can tell that his style is cavalier but perfectly balanced. There's plenty of archive footage of his driving for you to decide for yourself. I'm always fascinated by what makes someone ludicrously fast and it's every racing driver's job to observe and poach as much information from other competitors as possible. In the era before data-logging it was much harder to do so and the only way to observe was to follow in their wheel tracks, gauge their lines and braking points, the shifting weight of the car at turn in and hear the throttle inputs. Maybe one day I can get on track with Tommy in identical cars and have at it !!!

My latest guest on the show Tommy Byrne is a former motor racing driver who hails from outside Dundalk, Co. Louth and now lives in Daytona, Florida. Tommy talked about growing up working on a farm, how he got into racing on tracks like Mondello Park, then moving to England to pursue a motor racing career, and getting an opportunity to race in Formula 1. His racing career brought him to America, Mexico, and many tracks around the world. He also shared his favourite race tracks in the world, his thoughts on modern motor racing, how his book about his life was hard to do but he is happy he did it. Today, Tommy teaches young drivers, defensive driving techniques and coaches drivers to be better, and he also enjoys racing with his friends. Thanks, Tommy, for sharing some of your time, and I hope you and everyone enjoy this episode. As this is my pre-Christmas episode. I wanted to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and remember you are always welcome here on Hartelines.
Tommy Byrne's talent in a racing car was likened to that of Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher. To those who watched him closely, he was a champion in the making. Why, then, did his Formula 1 career last just five races in an uncompetitive car? Tommy tells Tom Clarkson the story of the impressive wins in junior categories – including one in Ayrton Senna's car – which got him to F1 in 1982. He explains why his straight-talking personality and party lifestyle upset the F1 establishment and why he never got the opportunity to race for a front-running team. Tommy also remembers the McLaren test that could have changed his life and the shock, decades later, when he learned what was really going on behind-the-scenes that day at Silverstone.

When you want to know, where to go, what to do, to be seen, to make a difference, you come here, to iIrish: 30 minutes of Truth & The Pulse of the Irish I love the auld Wolfe Tones song, Boston Rose. I was probably just in grade school when it first registered. I suppose I am a romantic. Written by Liam Reilly from Bagatelle, It was recorded and sung most notably by Tommy Byrne and the Wolfe Tones. It tells of an Irish lad in Belfast, who met his Rose one summer, when she came over to Ireland on holiday. The summer has ended, and she has gone home to Boston. He is back to the grind, working in a factory, and is remembering the good times and what made him fall in love, as well as the teasing of his friends about being love sick, as he daydreams. I remember the Belfast students that used to stay with us in Cleveland each summer, about 15 years older than I. They truly were the brothers I never had, at least until my sisters married. Those memories of summers, fireworks, Gaelic football, road trips and loads of laughing, run through me. In looking back, I first associated this song with them, and wondered if they were lonely while here? They had each other, but did they seek or find their rose while in the US. each summer? By the 2nd Summer, Charlie Sweeney was already seeing Martha, both were here in Cleveland for the summer, but Martha was staying with another family; Willie Hunter was seeing Anne I think, back in Belfast. Years later we went to Sean’s wedding to Pamela, when I was 14. In my daydreams, I hoped to find my own Irish rose. …; But of all the girls throughout this world, give an Irish girl to me! (or Brazilian, WOW!) It didn’t happen for me, despite my dreams, but for so, so many Irish men and women separated by the Atlantic Ocean, it did. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
