It's been a hell of a ride. In the early 1950s, he was watching declassified rocket explosions filmed by his father. During the 1960s, in the shadow of Riviera, he learned the game from Willie Hunter by flying 4-irons into the Pacific. In 1964 he helped produce some of the first music videos, and by 1966 he was part of the revolutionary Bones Brigade that introduced skateboarding to Europe. Over the decades his love for golf took him from Pacific Grove to Carne and just about everywhere in between. In 2020, he wrote about it all in TGJ No. 13 and joined host Tom Coyne to explain his movie-script life. This is Jim Fitzpatrick.

We are updating our name; with all the new offerings we have added. iIrish: Songs, Stories & Shenanigans better reflects our work and our outreach in an ever-changing world. When you want to know, where to go, what to do, to be seen, to make a difference, you come here, to iIrish: 30 minutes of Truth & The Pulse of the Irish I love the auld Wolfe Tones song, Boston Rose. I was probably just in grade school when it first registered. I suppose I am a romantic. Written by Liam Reilly from Bagatelle, It was recorded and sung most notably by Tommy Byrne and the Wolfe Tones. It tells of an Irish lad in Belfast, who met his Rose one summer, when she came over to Ireland on holiday. The summer has ended, and she has gone home to Boston. He is back to the grind, working in a factory, and is remembering the good times and what made him fall in love, as well as the teasing of his friends about being love sick, as he daydreams. I remember the Belfast students that used to stay with us in Cleveland each summer, about 15 years older than I. They truly were the brothers I never had, at least until my sisters married. Those memories of summers, fireworks, Gaelic football, road trips and loads of laughing, run through me. In looking back, I first associated this song with them, and wondered if they were lonely while here? They had each other, but did they seek or find their rose while in the US. each summer? By the 2nd Summer, Charlie Sweeney was already seeing Martha, both were here in Cleveland for the summer, but Martha was staying with another family; Willie Hunter was seeing Anne I think, back in Belfast. Years later we went to Sean’s wedding to Pamela, when I was 14. In my daydreams, I hoped to find my own Irish rose. …; But of all the girls throughout this world, give an Irish girl to me! (or Brazilian, WOW!) It didn’t happen for me, despite my dreams, but for so, so many Irish men and women separated by the Atlantic Ocean, it did. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Since I’m in a new House…seems like the time to play the tune I “Composed” for my friend’s Ric and Berit when they finalized some messy business with their Cabin: Squatter’s Hame Since we did the first tune in MacKay’s book here’s the first in O’Farrell’s Pocket Companion, Humours of the Glen. Read it here: https://digital.nls.uk/87779642 And Another MacKay tune I quite liked, “The Bride has a Bonny Thing” You can see it here: https://digital.nls.uk/105006948 I went back to my house at the last minute to record Squatter’s Haim and just took a quick crack at this lovely Donald MacDonald tune Mary Gray. https://digital.nls.uk/105682550 Speaking of History, finally gonna play the clip Carrie shared with me! Carrie’s set: “The tunes are: The Lass o’ Corrie Mill (strathspey, traditional)/Carnival March (strathspey by Gideon Stove)/Return to Milltown (reel, traditional)/The Cape Breton Fiddlers’ Welcome to the Shetland Islands (reel by Willie Hunter). Emma and I are playing fiddle, and my mom Susan is on piano.” Thanks again Carrie! I miss making music with you so much! You can listen to the album on various streaming services and buy it straight from her website: http://www.carriedlutkowski.com/ And another tune I’ve been enjoying out of O’Farrell: Jack in the Garret https://digital.nls.uk/87780698

This episode, the last in Series One, features Ethel Hofman, author of Mackerel at Midnight: Growing up Jewish in the Shetland Isles (Revised edition Mercat Press, Edinburgh, 2006), the Shetland Fiddlers Society, and young Shetland fiddler Amber Thompson. I set myself a challenge - to make a podcast during a trip to Shetland and Orkney rather than go back to recordings from last year like my last 6 podcasts - and I've done it! My podcast series subtitle is "Fascinating Conversations and Traditional Music". There's very seldom a week goes by when I don't come into contact with some traditional music. But last week in Shetland I was particularly lucky to find some AMAZING musc - there was a Shetland Showcase in the community centre, featuring the long-established Shetland Fiddlers Society (established in 1960 by Aly Bain), and a fabulous young fiddler, Amber Thompson - to hear her play you'd never believe she's only twelve. And I LOVE her teacher Eunice Henderson's piano accompaniment that's so typical of Shetland fiddling, a style I first heard with Violet Tulloch accompanying Aly Bain on the 1978 Topic "Shetland Folk Fiddling" record. Playlist Amber Thompson (Fiddle) Eunice Henderson (Piano) Gig for Frances by Debbie Scott/Simon Thoumire's jig by John McCusker [Amber's favourite jig of all time!]/Izzy's Jig by Margaret Scollay [Eunice's favourite] The Calgary Fiddler's Welcome to Shetland by Andrew Gifford/52 weeks of fiddle - written for Amber by Steven Smith to commemorate her year-long Shetland fiddle project - find it on youtube here/Cape Breton visit to Shetland (also known as "Welcome to the Cape Breton Fiddlers") by Willie Hunter.* The Shetland Fiddlers Society Da Ferry Reel/Lay Dee at Dee Acknowledgements Thanks to BBC Radio Shetland and David Gardner, to Shetland Library and Archives and Marghie West, and to the Scottish Council of Jewish Communities (SCoJeC) who sponsored the tour. And of course many thanks to Ethel Hofman - and her brother Roy Greenwald. Production notes Fiona's podcast no 7: Growing Up Jewish on Shetland - was recorded in Lerwick, Shetland on 12th - 14th August 2019, and mixed August 20th - 22nd 2019 in London, where I'm staying while I'm at Klezfest, a week long Klezmer festival which this year is directed by Alan Bern (interviewed on Fiona's Travels Podcast episode 2!). This is the last one in the first series of Fiona's Travels Podcasts. Please subscribe to hear about the next series. And if you're listening on Apple Podcasts please leave us a review! *when you've finished listening to this podcast, you can watch the late Willie Hunter himself playing his Cape Breton Visit to Shetland tune, accompanied by Violet Tulloch, here.

The power duo of Rick and Eleanor take time to sit down with Michael Jackson aficionado and television writer, Willie Hunter. As he guides them on a beautifully intoned journey through the veritable Roman wilderness of his Comedy Store memories, Rick and Eleanor are repeatedly distracted by the fact that other people are allowed to be in the same building as them. Also, Rick begins to suspect the sound guy of purposefully inserting creepy noises into his headphones that only Rick can hear and then taking them out in post so Rick seems mentally unstable. He's completely right.

Hi there, We're featuring the Scottish Traditional Music Hall of Fame Dinner on 11th October, Oran Mor, Glasgow in this podcast. If you would like to come you can get a ticket at www.tradmusichall.com. The music featured in the podcast comes from Willie Hunter (inducted 2013) tutored Fiddlers' Bid and their magnificent All Dressed in Yellow CD. Next up is Kenna Campbell (inducted 2005) tutored Catriona Watt and we follow this with Ross Ainslie's new CD Wide Open. Ross was mentored by Gordon Duncan (inducted 2010). We then play an unreleased track from Salt House and then a song from one of my mentors Nick Brennan. We finish up the podcast with Insomnia from global bagpipe stars Red Hot Chilli Pipers.
Young comedian Willie Hunter stops by LET THERE BE TALK and tells us how he got his start in Hollywood
On the inaugural episode of What's Good with Freddy Lockhart, Freddy is joined by co-host Willie Hunter and guest Steve Simeone. They discuss old school hip-hop and dig in to the hate-mail bag.
Hailing from Shetland, Jenna grew up immersed in the islands rich fiddle tradition. At the age of nine, she began to learn the fiddle, and was taught by the late Dr Tom Anderson. When fiddle tuition became available in schools, Jenna studied with the late Willie Hunter and was under his direction until the age of 13; during that time she was a prominent prize-winner in the 'Shetlands Young Fiddler of the Year Competition' and by the age of 14 had won both the intermediate and open sections of this annual competition. Through this success she was subsequently invited to compete in the Glennfiddich Fiddle Competition. Whilst still at school Jenna also took lessons from Trevor Hunter and Margaret Scollay. In addition to playing the fiddle, Jenna also studied classical piano. On leaving school, Jenna went on to study a BA in Traditional Scottish Music at the Royal Academy of Music & Drama in Glasgow. Whilst studying fiddle, she also played piano and piano accordion, as well as being introduced to singing. Julie Fowlis is from North Uist, a small island in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, now based in the mainland Highlands of Scotland. She sings in Scottish Gaelic and spends her time touring around the world performing Gaelic music and song. She is an accomplished musician as well - playing Highland bagpipes, whistles and even oboe & cor anglais. She was recently awarded the BBC Radio 2 Horizon Award 2006 for Best Emerging Artist and was also voted Gaelic Singer of the Year 2005 at the Scots Trad Music Awards. She is very chuffed about this and her Mam and Dad have the awards up in the living room.
