In the city of New York from the 1930s to the 1990s, Irish attorney Paul O'Dwyer was a fierce and enduring presence in courtrooms, on picket lines, and in contests for elected office. He was forever the advocate of the downtrodden and marginalized, fighting not only for Irish Catholics in Northern Ireland but for workers, radicals, Jews, and African Americans and against the Vietnam War. With his shock of white hair and bushy eyebrows, O'Dwyer was widely recognized in politics and in the media. His work as a reform Democrat transformed the Democratic Party and his advocacy for peace and justice in Northern Ireland bore fruit in the Good Friday Agreement of 1998 that ended decades of conflict. Until now, however, there has been no biography of this happy warrior for social justice. Fortunately, that problem has been remedied with a new book by Robert Polner and Michael Tubridy, An Irish Passion for Justice: The Life of Rebel New York Attorney Paul O'Dwyer (Cornell UP, 2024). Host Robert W. Snyder is Manhattan Borough Historian and professor emeritus of journalism, and American Studies at Rutgers University. His latest book, When the City Stopped: Stories from New York's Essential Workers, is due out in March 2025 from Cornell University Press. Decisions taken by RTÉ demonstrated a "lack of rigorous financial controls", the chairman of the Public Accounts Committee has said. Former RTE broadcaster Ryan Tubridy kicked off his new job, presenting Virgin Radio UK's midmorning show, on Tuesday. The London-based commercial radio station is very different from the national broadcaster and this new iteration of The Ryan Tubridy show, where he is more DJ than chat show presenter, is different from his former slot on RTÉ Radio 1; at three hours it's certainly longer. He was let go from RTÉ in June amid the payments controversy that in 2023 engulfed the broadcaster and in which he was centrally involved. On the new show there is more music and less talk, but as Irish Times radio reviewer Mick Heaney notes on today's In the News podcast, Tubridy has brought his familiar-to-Irish ears obsessions with him across the water. But will English listeners find references to the Beatles, walks, books, Connemara and pint of Guinness quite so charming? Can he do a Terry Wogan and become a beloved Irish broadcaster in the UK - or are those days over? Presented by Bernice Harrison. Produced by Declan Conlon. Hosted on Acast. Nuacht Mhall. Príomhscéalta na seachtaine, léite go mall. * Inniu an chéad lá de mhí Iúil. Is mise Niall Ó Cuileagáin. Nochtadh an tseachtain seo caite gur íoc RTÉ €354,000 sa bhreis le Ryan Tubridy ó 2017 go 2022, méid nach raibh fógartha acu go poiblí. Dúirt Tubridy féin nach raibh sé ar an eolas faoi na híocaíochtaí. D'éirigh ardstiúrthóir RTÉ, Dee Forbes, as a post de bharr na conspóide agus, de réir RTÉ, ba ise an t-aon duine a bhí ar an eolas faoi na híocaíochtaí. Ach, le linn na seachtaine, d'admhaigh an Taoiseach Leo Varadkar nár chreid sé an méid atá á mhaíomh ag RTÉ. Tháinig tuairim is 200 fostaí de chuid RTÉ le chéile Dé Máirt chun agóid a dhéanamh agus a gcuid feirge a léiriú mar gheall ar na híocaíochtaí ceilte. Bhí baill de Bhord RTÉ agus de Bhord Feidhmiúcháin RTÉ os comhair lucht ceistiúcháin sa Dáil agus Seanad chun ceisteanna a fhreagairt. Tar éis di an cuntas a chloisint dúirt an tAire Catherine Martin go raibhsé soiléir go raibh teip thubaisteach rialachais ag ard-leibhéail bhainistíochta san eagraíocht. Dhein fórsaí gallóglach Wagner ceannairc Dé Sathairn i gcoinne stát na Rúise. Níor mhair an cheannairc ach lá amháin sular stopadar a dturas go Moscó. Le linn an lae, ghlac na fórsaí seilbh ar an mbunáit a bhí ag Arm na Rúise i Rostov-ar-an-Don agus chonacthas iad 200km ó Mhoscó nuair a stopadh an cheannairc. Ba é an dúshlán is mó i gcoinne Putin le linn a cheannaireachta. Tá Yevgeny Prigozhin – ceannasaí fhórsaí Wagner – ar deoraíocht san Bhealarúis anois. Mhaígh sé nach raibh coup d'état i gceist ach agóid chun a mhíshásamh leceannairí an airm a léiriú. Bhí an Grúpa Wagner ag troid ar son na Rúise san Úcráin agus bhí buanna móra acu, go háirithe i mBakhmut, ach tá siad freagach as coireanna cogaidh chomh maith, de réir roinnt tuairiscí. Phléasc círéibeacha ar fud na Fraince oíche an tseachtaine seo tar éis marú ógánaigh darb ainm Nahel M. i gcathair Nanterre, gar do Pháras. Scaoileadh an fear óg nuair a stop na póilíní é. Dúirt na póilíní ar dtús gur scaoileadar é toisc go raibh sé ag tiomáint ina gcoinne, ach tháinig sé chun solais nach raibh an cuntas sin fíor ó fhíseán den eachtra a uaslódáladh ar na meáin shóisialta. Tá an póilín a scaoil an fear óg á fhiosrú anois. Tuairiscíodh clampar i gcathracha áirithe sa Fhrainc le linn na seachtaine. Cuireadh carranna agus foirgnimh trí thine agus chaith agóideoirí tinte ealaíne in aghaidh na bpóilíní. Bhí an fear óg de bhunús Afraic Thuaidh, rud a chuireann leis an éagóir a mhothaíonn na hagóideoirí. Gabhadh na céadta duine agus cháin Uachtarán na Fraince, Emmanuel Macron, an foréigean. * Léirithe ag Conradh na Gaeilge i Londain. Tá an script ar fáil i d'aip phodchraolta. * GLUAIS íocaíochtaí ceilte - secret payments teip thubaisteach rialachais - a disastrous failure of governance fórsaí gallóglach - mercenary forces ceannairc - mutiny círéibeacha - riots tinte ealaíne - fireworks

Bhí Trump i láthair ag imeacht de chuid CNN oíche Dé Céadaoin, inar mhaígh sé gurb iad cúrsaí polaitíochta ba chúis leis an triail, agus gur goideadh vótaí sa toghchán uachtaránachta in 2020. In ainneoin na bhfadhbanna dlí atá Trump, meastar go bhfuil a lán leantóirí aige i measc na vótálaithe, agus go bhfuil seans ann go mbainfidh sé an chéad toghchán eile in 2024. Tá eolaithe atá ag obair san Elvéis agus san Artach i ndiaidh teacht ar mhiocróib atá ábalta plaistic a dhíleá ag teocht íseal. Táthar eolach ar neart miocrób a bhriseann plaistic anuas ag teocht os ceann 30 céim cheana féin, ach baineann costas ard agus truailliú leis an chleachtas sin mar gheall ar an teas a bheadh de dhíth. Fuarthas roinnt baictéar agus fungas a dhíleánn plaistic ag 15 chéim celsius. Tá plaistic ar cheann de na truailleáin is coitianta ar domhan, agus deirtear go bhfuil plaistic le fáil sa bhia a itheann muid, san uisce a ólann muid agus mar sin inár gcorp féin. Is cosúil gurb é láithreoir teilifíse agus fear grinn Patrick Kielty rogha na coitiantachta don ról an láithreora ar The Late Late Show, an clár teilifíse is cáiliúla de chuid RTÉ. Tá Ryan Tubridy, a thosaigh ar an seó i 2009, chun éirí as ag deireadh na míosa seo, agus tá daoine mór le rá ar nós Claire Byrne agus Miriam O'Callaghan tar éis rá go poiblí nach nglacfaidh siadsan leis an phost. Cuireadh tús leis an chlár cainte sa bhliain 1962, agus bhí Gay Byrne ina óstach ón am sin go dtí 1999. Chaith Pat Kenny deich mbliana sa ról sular tháinig Tubridy isteach. Is as an Dún ó dhúchas do Kielty, agus maraíodh a athair le linn na dTrioblóidí sna Sé Chontae, agus meastar go mbeadh sé in ann dul i ngleic le topaicí tromchúiseacha chomh maith le hábhair éadroma. * Léirithe ag Conradh na Gaeilge i Londain.
