This week's Frankly is another in Nate's recurring series Uncomfortable Questions for Unsettled Times, in which he poses questions about our shared future. Today, he uses headlines regarding a potential ceasefire deal between the U.S. and Iran to confront a subject that has re-entered public discourse with a quiet but startling force: nuclear warfare. Through a wide-boundary lens, Nate outlines how the renewed discussion of nuclear force raises questions that extend far beyond the current conflict, including important (and uncomfortable) questions about nuclear proliferation, human psychology, and the erosion of long-standing taboos. He considers the possibility that many of today's geopolitical tensions are symptoms of deeper shifts underway in the global balance of power, and asks what happens when societies begin revisiting assumptions that once seemed settled. While renewed public discussion around nuclear weapons provides the immediate context, this episode is ultimately less about any single weapon or conflict, and more about the forces shaping human decision-making during periods of uncertainty and transition. Why do societies tend to realize the importance of a norm only when it is being broken? Are today's conflicts fundamentally about ideology and security, or are they about power, resources, and influence in a changing world? And what happens when established assumptions about global leadership, cooperation, and stability are put to the test? This week's Frankly is another in a recurring series, Uncomfortable Questions in Unsettled Times, where Nate poses questions about our shared future. Today he focuses on the unfolding crisis in the Persian Gulf, unpacking hidden implications that aren't covered by the headlines. Nate opens by examining how behind-the-scenes geopolitical decisions at the highest level create a widespread ripple effect – influencing everything from oil production to water desalination to fertilizer and food systems. He considers the risk of continued geopolitical conflict as global alliances shift, as well as the potential impact on the global economic order. This week's main focus, however, is the deeper systemic change underway. Nate evaluates how energy access and shifting means of modern warfare could reshape the global power dynamics – he asks uncomfortable questions about the possibility of tactical nuclear weapons, the erosion of (inter)national trust, and what it even means to "win" in a global conflict in the first place. He then zooms out even further, describing a potential geographic bifurcation of the global economic Superorganism, where the East "decouples" from the Western financial and energy systems that have long been the backbone of the global order. Nate closes with a consideration of how future climate outcomes might be shaped by war-driven energy decisions today, as well as highlighting how individuals and communities might respond very differently than nations do in the face of energy disruption. What hidden risks in energy and supply chains are still going unnoticed? How might shifting alliances and energy access redefine global power? And if the Hormuz situation is a 'dress rehearsal' of the future, where might individuals and societies consider changing their expectations and actions today? What happens when you let your audience ask anything… anonymously? In this episode of The Cooney Show, Ashley and I sit down and answer the most uncomfortable, unexpected, and brutally honest questions you guys sent in. Nothing was off limits… and yeah, it got awkward
This week's Frankly marks the second installment of Nate's recurring series, Uncomfortable Questions in Unsettled Times, where he poses questions about our shared future. While the first edition posed broad questions about civilizational trajectory, today's episode is prompted by the Iran situation and what happens when geopolitics stops feeling distant and starts arriving as supply chain disruptions, rising prices, fear, and renewed stories about enemies and allies. Nate walks through five questions that move from the practical to the interior. He begins with the gap between what is essential and what is merely familiar in modern life, asking listeners to identify what they depend on before scarcity makes the choice for them. From there, Nate turns inward to examine what the act of assigning blame actually does to our nervous systems and our capacity for response, and poses a larger geopolitical question about whether the collapse of U.S. global power would be net positive or net negative for the world. He then asks listeners to imagine their own town or community in 2050, and what actions they might take now with a few people around them. The episode closes with a reflection on fear as a force that narrows perception and collapses the potential for action, drawing on Frank Herbert's Dune and Nate's own honest response to watching a scenario he had long gamed out begin to move closer to reality. What fears about the future are quietly limiting your ability to act today, and which are actually helping you prepare? Is assigning blame increasing your capacity for meaningful action, or mostly giving shape to your distress? And if your future is going to become more local than you expect, what could you begin to do now with a few people in order to move toward the better end of the distribution? ASKING A GUY UNCOMFORTABLE QUESTIONS GIRLS ARE AFRAID TO ASK
This week's Frankly marks a new recurring segment on this platform where Nate poses questions about our shared future: Uncomfortable Questions in Unstable Times. In this edition, he explores what would change if societies shifted their primary goal from growth to stability. Nate also unpacks how a lack of purpose in modern life might shape politics, culture, and personal choices. He then scales up to look at power and behavior through a wider lens, examining how incentives in systems can shape the behavior of a nation. Nate cites the example of Artificial Intelligence to demonstrate how the large-scale introduction of tools can alter how we experience reality, morality, and physical bottlenecks. Overall, this series is based on the premise that better questions may matter more than discrete answers as we move toward a more uncertain future. What would change in your life if the country you reside in chose stability over growth? How do notions of "fairness" shift in a world where some people are closer to the "brink" than others? Finally, where is the line between staying true to your values and giving up power in a society built around growth and accumulation? In this episode Mitch Bach sits down with Marinel de Jesus, a former human rights lawyer turned tour operator. She is filled with questions about the adventure tour industry:Why do porters on the famous, touristy Inca Trail in Peru carry crushing loads for little pay and even less dignity? Why is it so difficult to find women adventure guides in so many parts of the world? What do indigenous communities actually want from tourism—and why doesn't anyone bother to ask them? These are just some of the uncomfortable questions and themes she's carried with her as she's lived and trekked around the world. Originally from the Philippines, she became a human rights lawyer in Washington D.C., spending 15 years prosecuting child protection and mental health cases. Then her mother passed away—and she never went back to the office. But Marinel didn't just start a tour company. She moved into indigenous communities. She lived with Quechua porters in Peru and learned the dark truths behind the picture-perfect Inca Trail. She spent nearly 300 days in Mongolia during Covid, co-creating a nomad camp that started with tea and a blank piece of paper—not a business plan. She walked 100 days across Nepal with Mingmar, a female guide she searched for over a year and a half to find, proving that women belong on the Great Himalaya Trail. This discussion challenges everything we assume about adventure tourism—the colonial narratives baked into our itineraries, the voices we never hear, the scripts we impose on communities who know how to welcome guests far better than we do. She makes the case for showing up with no agenda, listening before designing, and building something that matters more than scale.Marinel's organizations:Equity Global Treks (Brown Gal Trekker)The Porter Voice CollectiveHer vision for Himalayan Women Trail LeadersHer film KM82 on the Quechuan Porters of PeruThe Khusvegi English & Nomadic Culture Camp she helped start in MongoliaMore show notes and resources on tourpreneur.com

In today's episode, I share how faith became my foundation when I hit rock bottom, and why combining it with wisdom creates unstoppable momentum. I break down the dangers of living in a zero sum game, the importance of asking uncomfortable questions, and how trust and vetting can prevent costly mistakes. You'll hear why leading by example influences young people far more than lectures, the three lessons I give my kids, and how to focus on expanding your skills, knowledge, and desires instead of “pivoting.” From building confidence to applying your why with purpose, this conversation is about aligning with what truly moves you forward.

Alan Whitman challenges firm leaders to embrace uncomfortable questions as catalysts for organizational transformation. His central thesis: we are already advisors, trapped not by capability but by inherited paradigms that no longer serve our evolving purpose.Jason and Alan discuss how advisory and compliance were once integrated, but now we've artificially separated them. Modern firms must position traditional services as support structures for advisory work, not the primary focus. This requires asking: "Is this really our highest and best use to the organization?"Some specific reflection points from this episode are how many leaders are actively questioning their status quo versus simply going through the motions? The "ShoShin" approach—embracing beginner's mind when facing major changes—demands we start from scratch rather than incrementally adjust failing systems. Begin with uncomfortable questions that challenge existing assumptions. Evaluate whether you're accumulating clients or strategically building practice. Assess which non-negotiables could most transform your firm's trajectory. As a reminder, transformation is not about perfection, but about courageous, intentional movement toward our highest organizational potential. We are architects of possibility, constantly redesigning our structures to align with our evolving vision of what professional services can become.
