Interview with RedHook

Bringin' it Backwards

We had the pleasure of interviewing RedHook over Zoom video!RedHook are a fiercely independent, shapeshifting alt-rock foursome from Sydney, Australia who've quickly accumulated a global fanbase and tens of millions of streams through their powerful songwriting and captivating live show.Featuring the core creative duo of Emmy Mack and Craig Wilkinson, two strangers from regional New South Wales whose paths collided after moving to Sydney in 2017, RedHook combine with young gun drummer Alex Powys and seasoned bassist Ned Jankovic to create heartfelt, attitude-filled and relatable alternative rock music that consistently defies classification. The strength of their debut single ‘Minute On Fire' in 2018 was enough to attract the interest of one of the lead promoters of the UK's iconic Download Festival, who swiftly invited RedHook over to play. The band were then snapped up by The Hen House Artist Management (worldwide) and inked booking deals with New World Artists (AUS) and Wasserman (UK/EU), going on to conquer some of Australia's biggest music festival stages (Download, Good Things, Stonefest, BIGSOUND). They also completed their debut international tour (supporting metal titans Three Days Grace across the UK & Europe), launched their own gender diversity-inspired alternative festival in Sydney, 'UsFest', and undertook four complete Australian tours (selling out the Melbourne and Sydney legs of their own debut headline tour). As RedHook's global fan base grew steadily with each single release and live show, many big things followed. The band were named triple j Unearthed feature artist, Kerrang! Radio feature artist and were invited to host the ABC's iconic rage program. They've consistently featured as one of the top 50 most-played artists on triple j Unearthed every year since 2019.2021 saw RedHook release their long-awaited debut EP ‘Bad Decisions' which has ticked over 13 million Spotify streams and had its two lead singles added to rotation on triple j. The record earned praise from Kerrang! (UK), Rock Sound (UK), Rolling Stone (AUS) and many more, even scooping a 2022 AIR Independent Music Awards nomination for best punk EP or album.RedHook continued their steady rise across 2022 with their debut performances at Australia's UNIFY Gathering, Groovin' The Moo and boutique festival Rolling Sets, as well as playing one of the world's most iconic rock festivals Rock AM Ring/Rock im Park in Germany alongside the likes of Green Day and Muse, accompanied by a second tour of Europe supporting The Faim.Their own headline ‘Bring Ya Mates' tour was also a huge success with multiple sold out shows around Australia as it emerged from the COVID-19 pandemic. This was followed by a mammoth 28-date, two-month-long regional Australian tour as main support for metalcore titans In Hearts Wake and a triumphant return the Good Things festival stage alongside Bring Me The Horizon and Deftones, where RedHook made history as the first band to grace the lineup twice. In May 2022, RedHook returned with ‘Jabberwocky' their most gut-wrenching single to date, which was immediately added to triple j high rotation and added to the cover of Spotify's popular ‘All New Rock' Playlist. Follow-up singles ‘SAY' and ‘Soju' Ft. Sly Withers have both since been added to full rotation on triple j.RedHook recently released their long-anticipated debut album, Postcard From A Living Hell!We want to hear from you! HEAVY Music Interviews
From Whispers To A Scream With JONO HAWKEY From BLOOM

HEAVY Music Interviews

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 4, 2023 20:57

Interview by Kyra-Jade CoombsBloom are an Aussie band that I was pretty keen to have a chat with.As far as huge years go for bands, these guys have had an absolute pearler. From visualising their dream goals to ticking most of them off within 7 months, these guys really have gone from strength to strength.Becoming a part of Destroy All Lines, signing to Pure Noise Records and being put on the bill for Good Things 2023… this year is shaping up to be one they will never forget. One thing that really struck me throughout this interview was frontman Jono's pure passion and love for music. Bloom are one of those bands who are lucky enough to have had their friendship pre-gig days and still share the same vision, love and passion to this day with a mutual agreement of how fortunate they are to share such a bond. Jono often shares his appreciation and credits those around Bloom for working behind the scenes to support them and help facilitate their successes.Bound To Your Whispers is the latest release from Bloom which has a catchy hook guaranteed to get stuck in your head. If you haven't seen it yet, the video clip for Bound To Your Whispers transports youto a place that feels like you are in a void, a place with no sense of walls or structure to it. Their vision was expertly executed by Jack Fontes of Dunelabs who pretty well took their idea and made it come to life. This is by no means the end of new music we will hear from Bloom this year and by the sounds of it they have eons of material they have been working on waiting to be unleashed. To get a better sense of who Bloom are as a band, I asked how you'd describe them to someone who's just discovered them and Jono replied, “We combine parts of metalcore people like along with melodic hardcore, we want to have memorable moments. If you've just stumbled across Bloom and you are unsure, come to a show”.Honestly, I can't wait to see these fellas play live after this chat… even after all the huge gigs they've been a part of and artists they've supported, (Bad Omens, Unify Gathering, Thornhill to name a few), one of the band's favourite memories was their first headline show.Seeing familiar faces in the crowd and new fans showing up to support them was so important to them and filled them with a huge sense of pride beaming “We did this. WE did this”, trumping other memories and circles back to the appreciation for the music they play that I was talking about earlier.Finishing off this amazing year for Bloom is Good Things 2023 which is going to be a huge weekend of shows for the Sydney boys. I wondered who Jono was most excited to share the stage with, and it was of course Fall Out Boy. Being able to show the folk's Bloom's name on the poster alongside Fall Out Boy and a slew of legends is definitely something to write home about.I'm looking forward to seeing what unfolds for Bloom in the years to come as I'm sure it can only get better and better from here. Be sure to check them out on tour with Thornhill later this month or catch them playing the Good Things festival circuit in December.

When bands go through lineup changes it can mean one of two things, one of which is the band won't be the same as they used to be, the other is the flourish into a new entity and continue to dominate with the legion of fans they accumulated over the years and that's what we're predicting for Ocean Grove who debuted their latest member Twiggy this week, who replaces ex-frontman Luke Holmes and guitarist Jimmy Hall. A quick reshuffle of positions and roles within the band now sees the charismatic Dale Tanner ditching the bass in favour of fronting the now four piece and he's chatting with podcast host Browny all about it this week. The pair go over the transition and how they've adapted to losing two members, where they found Twiggy (who has been part of the OG family for a few years now) and their belter of a new song 'Ask for the Anthem' which, in a mind-blowing turn of events, actually made its debut over the speakers twice at UNIFY Gathering this year. You'll have to listen to find out when and try to remember if you were there when they played it. UNIFY Gathering. An experience and a half for heavy music fans who travel from all over Australia (and the world) to attend the sleepy country town of Tarwin Lower in Regional Victoria to see bands of various genres playing their hearts out and then joining in on the festivities with punters across the venue. Joining us on this very special 'Countdown to UNIFY' podcast is frontman Ian Kenny who not only opens up about what's taking so long with the band's new material, but also the feelings of neglect he deals with when thinking about the fans who are eagerly waiting to hear it. It's no secret the man is one of Australia's hardest working musicians fronting both The Vool and Birds of Tokyo, so its great to get an insight to how his mind works and how he juggles time between the two, as well as having a social life. But the surprises don't end there, he discusses the idea of a Sound Awake Anniversary Tour in 2019 to celebrate the album's 10th Birthday, similar to what they did with their debut album Themata and from all accounts, there could very much be something in the works already... Podcast host Browny also chats with the very first Wall of Sound UNIFY Intern winner Adam Rice about taking out the prize and a couple of the bands from the lineup which changed and influenced his appreciation for heavy music. If you're not on the Hellions bandwagon yet, boy you're missing out on some good quality, genre-crossing punk/alt rock. The legends from Sydney spawned from the ashes of the band The Bride (RIP) and have since bypassed and exceeded all expectations first thought, moving fast into the top position of Australia's heavy music echelon and establishing themselves as a band who are beloved by fans and critics alike. They're back with album number four Rue, which follows on from the success they had with their last release, the ARIA Award Nominated Opera Oblivia but according to drummer Anthony 'Aff' Caruso (who joins us on co-hosting duties this week), no matter how much success or attention they receive, they're still nowhere near realising the extent of their popularity. To him, they're still just four best mates, making music and trying to learn/grow as humans in the process. Their new album is fantastic and focuses on themes of self-encouragement and changing your ways to benefit your future, something we all need to take on board for the benefit of mankind. Also this week podcast host Browny discusses our MASSIVE UNIFY Intern Competition which could see you winning a Double Pass to UNIFY Gathering 2019 and the opportunity to not only cover the festival for us, but interview bands from the lineup too. Oh hey, sorry for the influx of podcasts lately but there's been so much news happening we needed to be on top of it all including The Amity Affliction's brand new album Misery which is the center of attention on this week's podcast with frontman Joel Birch joining Browny on co-hosting duties. He opens up about the band's drastic new direction which sees them quite heavily bring the synth from the background of their songs and gives it a position front and centre for all to see and hear, but that doesn't mean the strong, hard-hitting lyrical content is missing, something Amity have become masters of over the years due to Joel being so open about his own battles with mental health and depression. He also discusses how the idea of the Misery Saga short film series came about (the story behind Amity's singles they've released so far) and how hard it was to cut almost two hours of storyline back to 20 mins for the music videos. Plus he sheds light on when the band will be taking this new release on the road for fans and how they're planning on making this their biggest and best tour to date. Plus there's huge news about Australia's newest Music Festival Good Things Fest which will see the likes of The Offspring, Stone Sour, Bullet For My Valentine, Babymetal and more descend upon our shores in December for an east coast tour and while we're on the subject of festivals, the latest addition of bands for UNIFY Gathering have been revealed so we'll give you all the info you need to get you keen on that one.
