HEAVY Music Interviews

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 30, 2025 21:42

Interview by Kris Peters For almost four decades, rock outfit The Poor have flown the flag for good old-fashioned, no bullshit Aussie rock. Alongside their brothers in Rose Tattoo and The Screaming Jets, to name just a few, The Poor have remained loyal to their roots regardless of the changing tides of world music, delivering time and again with a carefree attitude coupled with classy as fuck rock numbers that almost dare you to not listen.Theirs is a music and style that has stood the tests of time and the swirling winds of change, and it is testament to their durability and longevity that last year's album High Price Deed is regarded in some circles as being equal to, if not superior to, The Poor's groundbreaking debut classic Who Cares. With a touring schedule reminiscent of the glory days of Australian rock and gigs booked already until at least the end of next year, it's fair to say that The Poor are running head first into the naughty forties and, even better still, show no signs of slowing down. Despite having their original bass player, Matt Whitby, step away from the band earlier this year for personal reasons, The Poor remain firmly on track, focused and ready to continue their domination of the Australian and global music scene.HEAVY sat down with drummer Gavin Hansen to find out just how much The Poor have on their plate. One of the questions we ask relates to the sustainability of bands such as The Poor and Rose Tattoo, and we question if their old-school attitude to life and music has played a part in their sustained output and success."I think so," he measured. "That's definitely a part of it, I guess. The way that you've grown up and the way that you've cut your teeth and the way you've maintained that. The industry has changed so much in a lot of ways, in a lot of different areas over that time, back and forth. Let's face it, in the 90s there were no festivals as such, really. Festivals made a massive change in the club touring circuit for a long time, especially in Australia. As you know, the good old Big Day Out, SoundWaves and Livid's got to a point where everyone would hold off until they got on one of those bills, and then they would create a tour around it. And then I think that's what hurt the scene of rock bands coming through. They weren't out there slogging it out in the circuit or the pubs every weekend, you know. They were waiting, or there was just a massive change of festivals. And then now… I don't know. I'm not going to say there's nothing to replace it in the sense of that calibre of acts. I just think that era has a different edge and hardness and toughness about it, where, you know, maybe the stuff in the last 10 years hasn't."Talk turns to Rock The Boat 2026, where The Poor sail the high seas with The Angels, Baby Animals, Rose Tattoo, Killing Heidi, The Superjesus and Radiators, just to name a few."I've always been hesitant about boat cruises," Hansen smiled. "What if you got on a boat cruise with a bunch of dickheads, how do you get away from them (laughs)? But no, look, these boats are big enough. It's not just a little tinny going around the harbour. We're really looking forward to it."In the full interview, Gavin talks more about The Poor's next two hometown shows at Mo's Desert Clubhouse (August 7) and the Koala Tavern (August 9) and how they will likely be the last chance this year the people of Brisbane and the Gold Coast get the chance to catch The Poor in their element. We discussed Matt leaving in greater detail and meet his replacement, while also looking into the fallbacks of changing band members that most of the public don't see.We talked about their upcoming shows with Rose Tattoo, Adelaide's Rock Hard Festival, supporting up-and-coming Australian bands, the increasing lack of respect in the music industry and possible causes of it, new music and future tours, plus more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

The creative chemistry becomes almost telepathic, transforming into what SuperJesus bassist Stu Rudd describes as "the DNA of both of us being in this band."In this revealing conversation, Ruddy takes us behind the scenes of the recently released self-titled SuperJesus album and their extensive Australian and New Zealand tour, currently riding high on sold-out shows and enthusiastic fan response, the band demonstrates that their creative fire burns as brightly as ever. The album represents a new pinnacle in the songwriting partnership between Stu and frontwoman Sarah McLeod, who have developed an intuitive musical connection that transcends words. "There were times when we would look at each other and we wouldn't talk, but we knew that we had to put a new chord in there," he explains, offering rare insight into their creative process. The journey from their early days to becoming ARIA Award winners with platinum albums wasn't without challenges. With refreshing honesty, Rudd recalls the grueling work behind their "overnight" success – including rehearsing daily for 18 straight months. He reflects on how the band was often too busy with the practicalities of touring to fully appreciate their achievements at the time: "You guys are going platinum. Okay, yeah, well, we need petrol for the van because we're driving another 1,400 kilometres." Now, with the perspective of time, he can look back with well-earned pride at what they've built together. Between insights about the band, Stu also shares details about his work with supergroup The Filthy Animals and answers rapid-fire questions about his musical influences, favorite performances, and songs he wishes more people knew.Whether you're a long-time fan or discovering The SuperJesus for the first time, this conversation offers a fascinating window into the mindset of musicians who continue to create vital, powerful music decades into their career. Catch The SuperJesus on their current tour – tickets and dates available at superjesus.com.What has Ruddy been up to lately?  Let's find out!Get out when you can, support local music and I'll see you down the front!!Visit: ThatRadioChick.com.au

Interview by Kris PetersThe Superjesus have been a mainstay on the Australian rock scene for more than three decades.Their infectious music coupled with arguably one of the best live shows in the country have endeared the band to generations of music lovers since their inception in the late 1990s, with the band's debut album Sumo in 1998 spawning fan favourites such as Down Again, Saturation and Now and Then. The follow-up, Jet Age, magnified the growing popularity of The Superjesus, delivering the smash hit Gravity as well as Secret Agent Man before Rock Music rounded out the trifecta in 2003.A brief hiatus from the mid 2000s gave the band members time to reflect on their personal music ambitions before deciding the world needed more of their music in 2013. This produced an EP, Love and Violence (2016), as well as a double live album but despite The Superjesus quickly reclaiming their status amongst Australia's elite touring band's, no new music has been forthcoming. That changes this Friday, March 21, when The Superjesus (self-titled) comes out, fuelled by the success of six previous singles Money (We're Only In It For Love), Lights Out, We Won't Let Go Until It's Over, Something Good, a cover of Generation X's Dancing With Myself and beautiful ballad Diamonds. This is the new Superjesus, a more soulful, engaging version of the band we know and love where song writing is king.HEAVY caught up with frontwoman Sarah McLeod to find out more. We bring up a quote she made to HEAVY in October last year where she proclaimed "I shit you not, but it's the best stuff we've ever written", and ask if she still feels that way after the album has had more time to digest. A smile swept across her face before replying with a simple "yeah"."I guess maybe that's why I love it so much," she continued, "because I'm so connected to it. And I just feel like we've got better. I feel like we did a great job in the 90s, and we were happy with those records, but we had 10 years off, and we all went and did different music. We learnt stuff. Ruddy (Stuart, bass) was in all these different bands, and he came back with a whole library of new influences and so did I. And we're like, okay, we're the same people, but we're not really because we've learnt all this stuff. So why don't we bring in the cool shit that we've learned and make something different, but paying homage to who we were. And that's where we're at. And I think it's been really good for us. And I love it."In the full interview, Sarah expressed her excitement about the album, which has seen the release of six singles over the past 18 months. She highlighted her favourite track, Gangbusters, and explained the strategic decision to hold back some songs to build anticipation. She emphasized that while there is no external pressure, she feels a personal drive to deliver quality music, reflecting the band's evolution and commitment to their craft.Sarah shared insights into her songwriting process, noting a shift towards creating cohesive narratives rather than standalone lyrics. She discussed the challenges of balancing her solo work with that of The Superjesus, particularly in terms of lyrical content and audience resonance. The conversation also touched on the creative process, where Sarah likened songwriting to an alchemical journey that requires refinement to achieve simplicity. She said she believes that effective songs often stem from straightforward lyrics that engage audiences, a principle she strives to uphold in her work. We discussed the band's upcoming tour and what to expect musically, as well as the opportunity for local band's to open in each city and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Interview by Kris PetersAustralian music was a melting pot of talent in the early 90s with bands like Tumbleweed, Regurgitator, Spiderbait, Magic Dirt and the Superjesus planting the initial seeds that would see them still knocking crowds dead to this day - some 30 years later.Punk upstarts the Hard-Ons were also a major player in the thriving scene, but it is an offshoot of that band - formed after internal bickering led to one of the band's many breakups - called Nunchukka Superfly who made perhaps the biggest impact of them all despite never releasing an album and disbanding after a few short years. In that time Nunchukka Superfly - Ray Ahn and Peter Black from Hard-Ons, Massappeal drummer Peter Allen and former Harpoon frontman and future Drones co-founder (and now JJ McCann Transmission main man) James McCann - earnt a fierce reputation as a must see live band, managing to record an albums worth of material that was seemingly lost to the ether and never to be seen or heard again.Until now.The masters of that album found their way back into the hands of McCann, who dutifully passed them along to the rest of the band, ensuring the collection of now timeless punk rock tunes would finally see the light of day.The band released Nunchukka Superfly 95 earlier this year and announced a run of shows in celebration, proving there's still life in the legs and lungs of this Australian musical enigma. And where there's life, there's hope, as evidenced by the fact Blackie and James reached out to us here at HEAVY to talk about the past, present and future of Nunchukka Superfly. We start with the album and ask how it felt to finally release it after so many years."I guess you could call it strange," Blackie mused, "but at the same time it felt really good, and I think we can thank James for that because I didn't even have a copy of the recordings. I forgot what it was like even. But James got in touch about a year and a half ago and said mate, have you heard that fucken thing we did all those many moons ago? It's really ferocious. We should release it and I remember thinking yeah, yeah, maybe one day. He sent me a copy, and I was like holy fuck he's right. This is mad.""I had it on cassette for years," James added. "And I think we all had a cassette copy initially, but I wore that out eventually. In Sydney Jason, who recorded it, was working across the road from where I lived at the Hopeton Hotel on the weekends, and he said I have that DAT tape of that Nunchukka Superfly recording, do you want a copy? I said yes, and I sat on that for years because I didn't have a DAT player (laughs). I had access to this old 90s DAT player about ten years ago at a friend's studio, so we plugged in the old player and put the cassette in and BAM, there it was loud and clear, and somehow I had stored it away well enough to obviously have not lost it. That was the start, then I got it digitized and sent it to Blackie and Ray."In the full interview, Blackie and James talk more about the release of their debut album, Nunchucka Superfly 95, after many years, and the upcoming reunion shows. They shared their memories of the band's formation, their last show in 1996, and their chemistry during the first jam session, expressing excitement about the reunion and the potential for future collaborations.Blackie and James also discussed the process of obtaining and digitizing the original recording of their debut album, emphasizing that no alterations were made to the original recording. They reflected on the quality of the music and the positive reactions on social media and strong initial sales, including overseas interest, and expressed pride and gratitude for the continued interest in their music after so many years.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Interview by Kris PetersEskimo Joe are in the rare and elite class of Australian bands who could probably never make another album again, but still draw people to their shows based solely on the quality of material they have released thus far.Two songs in particular - Love Is A Drug and Black Fingernails, Red Wine - have etched Eskimo Joe into Australian music folklore, but their 27-year journey has seen many more highlights and relatable songs. The band built their reputation playing festivals such as Big Day Out and Splendour In The Grass, but of late have been playing nostalgia-type festivals featuring classic bands from the past few decades that are still going strong. The most recent of which was Lookout Festival which featured Incubus, Live, Eskimo Joe, The Superjesus and Birds Of Tokyo. It was a series of concerts that drew consistently high numbers and reaffirmed Eskimo Joe's standing amongst the country's elite live bands, despite having not released a full album since Wastelands in 2013.With the release of their first single since 99 Ways in 2021 - a nostalgic number called The First Time - Eskimo Joe are embarking on a new chapter of their careers and learning to embrace the very fabric of music that excited them nearly three decades ago.HEAVY caught up with bass guitar/keyboards/vocals Kav Temperley to find out more."This is certainly the first song we've put out post-COVID where we've actually played some shows in front of people and then recorded a song, which is a very different feeling," he said. "I think we've hit a real purple patch. Since we saw you at Sandstone Point, all of the shows that we have been playing have been these big, almost nostalgia fests. We've noticed that the gigs are filled with people who are in their early 20s to their 60s and 70s. They are people who would have been 5 or 6 when Black Fingernails, Red Wine first came out, and people who would have discovered us when we first put out Sweater. We've kind of hit this really interesting place where we're not cool or uncool anymore, we just occupy this Eskimo Joe shaped hole in the music industry, which is great. Putting out a new song has been wicked. Definitely the best pickup we've had at radio since 2010 I guess, but everyone is receiving it really well."In the full interview, Kav talks more about The First Time and its sonic direction, the film clip that traces the history of the band over the last 20-odd years, if it is a stand-alone track or part of something bigger, the shows with Live and Incubus, some things they have learnt about themselves and their bandmates over 20 plus years of touring, the just started National Acoustic Theatre Tour and what to expect, playing the more intimate shows and the higher level of fan interaction, future plans and more.

Interview by Kris PetersSince their inception in 1991 US rock outfit Incubus have defied the laws and conventions of music by shading outside the lines and creating their own brand of sonic retribution.Their music was different and experimental, while still maintaining a rock-infused underbelly that provided a meaty backbone that stood tall through a myriad of musical disparities that combined to create the perfect sonic storm. With three consecutive albums that pushed the envelope further than ever before S.C.I.E.N.C.E. (1997), Make Yourself (1999) and Morning View (2001), Incubus and their music quickly gained global attention and transformed what was once a personal odyssey into more of a worldwide phenomenon.Such is the band's enduring legacy, they have re-recorded Morning View and will release it on May 10 with the title Morning View XXIII, but first they are making a long overdue return to Australia for a run of shows with fellow rockers Live this April. As well as five national co-headlining shows with Live, Incubus will also appear at the inaugural Lookout Festival, an outdoor event on some of the country's most iconic stages alongside Live, Birds Of Tokyo, Eskimo Joe and The Superjesus.HEAVY was fortunate enough to speak with Incubus frontman Brandon Boyd on the eve of the tour."I think this is probably the most extensive tour of Australia we will have done," he smiled. "I could be wrong about that, but I don't remember having played… I think it's eight or nine shows by itself, just in Australia. I'm excited."This will be Incubus' first trip to Australia since 2018, so we cheekily ask Boyd why the band has neglected us for so long."(laughs) Something happened in the world sometime after 2019 that made it so travelling was really tough," he replied. "I don't remember exactly what it was, but something happened that kept us off aeroplanes and stuff (laughs). We're sorry it's taken us so long, but we're really excited to make our way back, and we're thrilled to be able to do these shows with the band Live as well."On the subject of Live, we ask why they were chosen to be touring partners with Incubus on this run."This is something that honestly would not have occurred to me," he measured, "to put our bands together to do this. It came through other channels to potentially pair us up to tour, but when we heard about it being a possibility, all of us were very enthusiastic about the idea because Live was one of those bands when I was growing up that just had some bangers. They've got some tracks that are just killer, and I've actually never seen them play live, so it's pretty awesome to go on tour with a band that you enjoy, but you've never had the pleasure of seeing live. So this will be my introduction to them formally."In the full interview we discuss the tour in greater detail, Lookout Festival and playing with Australian bands, what has changed in the 6 years since Incubus last toured Australia, the different excitement he gets from playing outdoor festivals compared to indoor arenas, re-recording Morning View, how well the music from that album has stood the test of time, if and how crowds respond differently to the songs from that album two decades later and more.

They've since made a name for themselves as part of the vanguard of new Australian rock, with their tenacious work ethic, frenzied touring schedule, and a raucous, high-energy live shows, which routinely leave their audiences covered in blood, sweat, and beers. They've supported major US bands Buckcherry, Fozzy, and The Iron Maidens at sold-out shows, as well as Australian legends, Palace Of The King, Kingswood, Dead City Ruins, The Southern River Band, Child & The Poor, and have dates with Rose Tattoo coming up in 2024. The band have set their sights overseas, having headlined their first international tour and rock festival; ROCKTOBER FEST in Nouméa, New Caledonia in October 2022 to some of their most riotous crowds yet and touring Japan in March 2024, with more overseas tours in the works... Avalanche are the winners of Passport To Airlie 2023, Australia's largest live original band competition at Airlie Beach Festival of Music where they shared the stage with Ian Moss, Freznal Rhomb, Dragon, The Superjesus, Ross Wilson , and more, and as a result, they will be returning in 2024 Nov 7-10 with a headlining slot,Since then, they've joined the country's foremost booking agency, Premier Artists, part of the Mushroom Group, as their exclusive booking agent for Australia, joining the ranks of Australia's highest profile artists (Airbourne, The Angels, The Screaming Jets, Jimmy Barnes...) as well as a management deal with Big Apachee that already sees the band transcending to new heights.Avalanche continues to play to packed audiences with rave reviews and sold-out shows at some of Australia's most iconic venues including festivals. Over the years, the band became mainstays at Sydney's most loved heavy music venue; Frankie's Pizza By The Slice, playing their infamous birthday bash on the venue's 8th birthday and recording the music video for 'Bottle Of Sin' there just before the venue was demolished for a train station. Always showing no signs of slowing down, they've gone from major support slot to festival slots, even undertaking a month-long residency at Sydney's best alternative music pub The Duke Of Enmore, and playing at halftime at Pro Wrestling Australia's sold-out show at Liberty Hall.Known for their high production music videos, the band has worked with HAUS Party [The Amity Affliction, Peking Duk, Guy Sebastion, North Lane] on their first music video, and 5 videos later, they've amassed a couple hundred thousand views on YouTube & social media, similar figures on Spotify, and a few thousand CD's sold worldwide. Recently, one of Australia's most loved TV programs Blokesworld has been blasting Avalanche's music on TVs across Australia on Channel 7 and 7Mate, with their music videos added to rotation on 1700 & The Hard Rock Show on Channel C31 Melbourne and 44 Adelaide.Their Latest single 'Hell's Getting Hotter With You' has seen major coverage globally including Classic Rock & Rock Hard in Germany, by Igor Miranda (Journalist from Rolling Stone Brazil, Whiplash.Net, Guitarload magazine & more), and on major editorial and algorithmic playlists on Spotify, and Apple...

Tearing Down The System With TIM HENWOOD From PALACE OF THE KING

Interview by Kris PetersOne thing that has always typified Australian music is the internal support system encouraged by those within it.Band members often share their talents amongst two, three, or sometimes four other bands, with his fellow bandmates offering words of encouragement and respect rather than bemoan the fact their guitarist, or their drummer is not exclusively a part of their musical gang for want of a better word.Of course, there are always exceptions to the rule, but as a whole Australian music is made up of and populated by like-minded musicians who just want to play.Aussie rock outfit Palace Of The King is no exception, sharing its members with other bands such as Jon Stevens, The Screaming Jets and The Superjesus, an outside collective that adds nothing but starch to the Kings when all return to the fold. The proof of that is in the band's latest single Tear It Down, a high-energy rock track done only as Australian rockers can. The song is lifted from Palace Of The King's upcoming album Friends In Low Places, which will be released via Reckless Records next month.HEAVY sat down recently with vocalist Tim Henwood to find out more. We start by asking how Tear It Down has been received."It's been great," he beamed. "Because it's quite a full-on written song. I don't know if you've noticed, but we've been putting a new song out pretty much every eight weeks for months now, and I've been trying to mix it up. The last one was a bit more of a cruisy Americana, Black Crowes kind of thing and this one's much more fast, risky, kind of 70s-tinged Queens Of The Stone Age type of thing. I've been trying new stuff, so every time I put a new post up saying here's a new single fans of the band have piped up and said 'I wasn't expecting this', so I gave them a bit of a banger. In the full interview, Tim talks more about Tear It Down and what the song is about, how it sonically represents the new album, the overall direction of Friends In Low Places, producing and recording his own music and the pros and cons involved, a brief history of the band, the album launch tour and more.

Interview by Kyra-Jade CoombsThe Superjesus are Aussie icons. Not only are they great musicians, but they are down to earth and the kind of people you could sit with for hours and have amazing conversations with.HEAVY took the chance to have a yarn with long time bass player Stuart Rudd, ‘Ruddy', about their upcoming monster Australian tour for new single ‘Lights Out'. It's nice to have a chat with someone who has been in the music industry for so long but still has a burning passion and pure love for what they do. It was written across his face as it lit up talking about his band, and I think an amazing thing to have. It's not often you hear muso's saying that ‘Getting outon the road is a nice break'. That's pure love I tell ya..As far as surprises on tours go, Ruddy said there will be a few oldies played from their long spanning repertoire along with new tracks recorded recently.By the sounds of it Superjesus have been busy recording and are flirting with the idea of releasing an album sooner than later, so keep your ears peeled for that.We had a trip down memory lane and spoke up the longevity of the friendship, (working and otherwise), with vocalist Sarah McLeod. Having such a connection with someone that you can both just look at each other in the midst of playing a song and have that smile/ nod combo and know exactly what they're thinking. Not many people have this, nor experience it in their lifetime and this type of connection is translated through into their music. It's bloody magic and I have the utmost respect for them. There's a lot more Easter eggs sprinkled into this interview so have a good listen and enjoy. The ‘Lights Out' tour has 15 stops and I dare say one will be near you, go and catch a show…. I know I am.
