Brisbane indie punk outfit Semantics have splashed their name across the national music scene in the space of seven short years, traversing the country with acts such as Luca Brasi, Violent Soho, Sly Withers and The Menzingers while managing to drop their debut LP Paint Me Blue in the midst of it all, garnering a loyal and passionate global fanbase to boot.To prove they are no flash in the pan, Semantics recently unleashed their sophomore album I Feel It All At Once, producing their most cohesive and definitive work to date. Across its eleven tracks, I Feel It All At Once encapsulates a broad emotional spectrum; snapshots of life's experiences, journeying themes of grief, love, yearning and ultimately, acceptance. Semantics are a band who have proven in the past that they are unafraid to explore darker themes and subject matter, but even then, they displayed a talent for doing it in a way that felt healthy and cathartic.Vocalist/guitarist Callum joined HEAVY to go more in depth."I'm so excited," he enthused a couple of days out from the album's September 27 release date. "We've been sitting on these songs for a few months now and waiting to put them out and see what everyone thinks. (Musically) we were aiming to encapsulate everything we love about rock and guitar music. We wanted to pay tribute to all of their styles and artists that have influenced us and play from the heart and make songs that we believe in. Write about content and subject matter that is important to us or relevant to our lives, but is also - we hope - translatable and accessible to everyone else."In the full interview, Callum explained how the album represents a new chapter for the band, with a greater focus on production and songwriting effort, and is a tribute to the styles and artists that have influenced them. We discussed Semantics' upcoming album tour, which will start on the Gold Coast on October 13 and end in Brisbane on November 6, with Callum describing their live shows as loud and energetic, with a positive atmosphere. We also spoke about the album title and how it differs to their first release, plus more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.
Eliza and the Delusionals' journey is packed with memorable moments. From the casual banter about food in the Virgin Lounge to the intense recording sessions with Holy Holy, each experience has shaped their musical identity. Oscar's influence pushed them to explore new creative depths, even featuring his dog's breathing sounds on their album. Their recording routine, filled with golden moments and hearty roast dinners, reflects their dedication to crafting authentic music. However, not all experiences were smooth sailing, as Oscar's adamant refusal to host bands again attests. Yet, playing live, whether on tour with The Front Bottoms or Luca Brasi, has been a highlight, even amidst the chaos of rationing chips and unexpected mishaps like getting their bus stuck on the way to Aspen. As they anticipate their upcoming album release and reflect on collaborations with icons like Butch Vig and Bryan from Silver Sun Pick Ups, Eliza and the Delusionals remain grounded by the warmth of the music community. From unforgettable encounters at festivals like Bottlerock to chance (and hilarious) meetings with industry figures like Dicko from Australian Idol, their journey is a testament to perseverance and passion in the ever-evolving world of music. We're getting a massive National Tour and WE cannot wait!!!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In their conversation, Mark and Eriq talk about: How Eriq had always wanted to be a writer Joining the high school drama club in junior high with the idea that they'd be able to put on the plays that he would write Being told by the drama teacher that he had to audition, and how that started the "acting bug" that took him through a multi-decade career acting, directing, and producing The way the author desire resurfaced about a dozen years ago The prequel story to The Martyr Maker series (which appears in the end of LAWS OF DEPRAVITY) and why Eriq wrote it The concept behind The Martyr Maker franchise Loving movies and television and being inspired by the storytelling conventions there The way each of the three main characters leads a little bit more in the first three books in the series Eriq's work as Executive Producer for several years on Chicago PD Directing and Executive Producing Dick Wolf's first show launched into streaming on Amazon Prime A minor character in the series (known as "The African") who was fashioned after the Luca Brasi character in The Godfather and who will return in a later book in the series How it took 10 years to find a publisher, and Eriq's DIY experience self-publishing The importance of understanding and participating in the grass-roots style marketing as an author Having to do a lot of marketing work even when you're with a larger publisher The way that the status of "celebrity" can sometimes work against you Eriq's respect for each medium and how to re-think, and re-learn in his unique roles within them The importance of humbling yourself How the marketing person that Eriq had hired and worked with eventually became his agent Feeling that he is a better writer of fiction novels than of screenplays, despite his years of experience as an actor, director, and producer The intention cinematic writing that Eriq did when crafting The Martyr Maker series Enjoying collecting "useless trivia" and how that can aid in the research aspect of writing a novel Giving credit to the technical advisors Eriq has worked with on shows like ER and Chicago PD The various first readers that Eriq works with Being an old fashioned paper book reader Eriq's great respect for librarians The delightful feeling of seeing your book in various bookstores of all sizes, including indie bookstores, big box stores, and airport bookstores Doing several events in New York for the week the book is launching, including a special "On the Couch with Eriq La Salle" The importance of listening to the messaging The understanding that "we are blue collar artists" Advice Eriq would offer to writers who are working at it and haven't yet found their success And more . . . After the interview, Mark reflects on a few of the things Eriq talked about, as well as a subtle, but important way Eriq spoke about the "team" he works with as an author. The only way to survive was to fight; at school, at home, hanging out on the stoop, or walking home from school. One day when clowning with his pals on the way from school, one of his best friends collapsed right next to him. Hank thought he was kidding around. He wasn't. He was shot dead from an unknown sniper on a rooftop. It wasn't the first, or the last time, Hank would see death on those mean streets. At 9, Hank knew what it was like to get sucker punched and have your nose broken from a total stranger and for no reason. Those were the cruel lessons of life in Harlem. By 12, Hank was carrying heat: a .25 caliber hand-gun he kept loaded, hidden, and nearby at all times. By 13 he was no longer a virgin, pumping iron, and seriously studying Martial Arts. His future seemed dim; reform school, brushes with the law, beaten up by local thugs for protecting a friend, and getting evicted with his family from their meager dwelling. At 17 he became a professional wrestler, having to lie to get his license because he was underage. He posed as “Hank Daniels, the Minnesota Farm Boy” and competed against the top wrestlers on the national wrestling circuit, including Killer Kowalski and Lenny Montana, who later became an actor, appearing as Luca Brasi in The Godfather. He had a fan club, and even escorted Audrey Hepburn to a gala Hollywood-style event. Hank now had the show biz bug. But the street still had a hold on him.

Tyler Richardson is the front man and founding member of Tasmanian punk rockers Luca Brasi. Tyler to me has always been such an interesting guy, he is widely adored by fans of course, but anyone I know who knows him always mentions how grounded and fascinating he is - so I wanted to find out for myself. In this chat we talk about his upbringing and creating the band. His experiences with anxiety and how that has at times hindered but also empowered him and his passion for music. The challenges of being a rock star on weekends, and a high school teacher during the week. Travelling to amazing parts of the world with the band, and working with the wiggles and the JackJumpers (to name a few). And also very excitingly, we talk about Tyler becoming a Dad soon. Tyler really is a wonderful guy, and although I am not into punk rock myself, I will be telling kids to look up to him as he is a fantastic role model for our younger generation. Enjoy!

This week we leave the gun and take the cannoli's for a discussion of one of the greatest movies ever made, The Godfather. Oz and Claudio explore the greatness of director Francis Ford Coppola and struggle with contextualizing just how good Pacino's and Brando's performances are. The Godfather marks the third part of a three week effort to answer the question “what are the greatest Best Picture winners of all time?” "It's a Sicilian message. It means Luca Brasi sleeps with the fishes." CATEGORIES THIS WEEK: Francis Ford Coppola Marlon Brando Al Pacino James Caan Robert Duvall Mob Movies Breaking Bad Movies (a character falls to the dark side) 1972 1970s Best Picture Winners Learn more about your ad choices. Correction, it's Jim Boehiem that looks like a medieval cave troll, my mistake. My general distaste for his son made me cross my words. Yes folks, if I can manage to not have a ruptured aorta before Saturday afternoon, your host with the most will behold the greatest sight in all of sports. Carolina Duke, hatred through competition at it's finest and I fully expect to be hanging from my ankles on a street lamp in Durham shortly after the final buzzer. Especially after Brady man handles these boys I'm already ecstatic. Rep the brand, get the new merch or I'll send Luca Brasi over there. He's the new distributor. Once again, I believe the Youtube version is better because I put the time in for some visual cuts. A két podcaster sorra veszi a produkció minden, mára már emblematikussá vált jelenetét, kezdve a „Majd egyszer mi is kérni fogunk tőled valamit cserébe” – mondattól, a levágott lófejes jeleneten, Luca Brasi, Sony Corleone megölésén, a Don Vito elleni merényleten át, egészen a bosszú kiteljesedéséig, sőt, Michael Corleone hatalma megszilárdításáig.
