Before David's startled gaze the newcomer placed his right hand to his left shoulder and removed the left arm. He then proceeded to dismember himself until only a torso, head and one arm remained. The Artificial Man by Clare Winger Harris. That's next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast.A new debut on the podcast today: the first woman to publish science fiction stories under her own name in the pulp magazines. While Francis Stevens—born Gertrude Barrows Bennett—was a trailblazer often credited as the first female science fiction writer, she published under the ambiguous name “G. M. Barrows,” using initials that concealed her gender.Clare Winger Harris didn't hide hers. When her first short story, The Runaway World, appeared in the July 1926 issue of Weird Tales, it was credited openly to Mrs. F. C. Harris.Born in Freeport, Illinois in 1891, Clare came from a distinguished background. Her mother, Mary Stover Winger, was the daughter of D. C. Stover, the town's wealthiest man, a renowned inventor and industrialist. Her father, Frank S. Winger, was an electrical contractor and a science fiction writer himself, having published The Wizard of the Island; or, The Vindication of Prof. Waldinger in 1917.Between 1926 and 1933, Harris wrote a dozen science fiction short stories and one novel. In the late 1930s, she moved to Pasadena, California, where she lived modestly and sometimes worked as a switchboard operator to make ends meet.Remarkably, just a year before her death in 1968, she inherited a quarter of her grandfather's estate—valued at over two million dollars. Though he had passed away in 1908, the estate had been tied up in court battles for nearly sixty years. We will find today's story in the very first issue of Science Wonder Quarterly in the fall of 1929, on page 78, The Artificial Man by Clare Winger Harris…Next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, When a skeptical professor steps into the mind of a former student's fiancée, he discovers a surreal landscape shaped by vanity, obsession, and alarming emptiness. A sharp and unsettling exploration of how our inner worlds reveal far more than we intend. The Shoddy Lands by C. S. In today's episode of the Truth Wanted, ObjectivelyDan and Jim Barrows jump into social media to separate the art from the artist, and are careful not to be echo chambers as they float through space to trigger a speciation event.James in NY has some thoughts about how social media can help with deconstruction. The process of deconstruction is not just one time and happens repeatedly. Jim mentions some YouTube programs that not only help him but also are entertaining. This can also be helpful when it is hard to leave some things behind, Dan describes. What kinds of things can be difficult to accept as true?Bagel in Canada wants to talk about separating the art from the artist and presents an example of a musician who did something awful yet still produces a great song. How can you separate the revenue stream from the artist? The thing that makes a person a moral monster is not necessarily their art. Knowing everything about every celebrity ever can give us some problems to wrestle with. How can you tell when the actual art is the problem? What if the cameraman of a series that you love comes out as a Nazi? Even bad people say and do good things on occasion. We can rephrase this as separating the science from the scientist.Caleb in WY wants to figure out how to not be an echo chamber and take the proper approach to find what is true. Dan draws off his experience to explain how helpful it is to use five different news sources for every story you find. Information is misreported on all sides and you must take an active attempt at absorbing information. Jim will surf different sites in incognito mode so he is not recognized. This will help prevent the information being tailored to you. The same article will have different headlines depending on the audience.  The hosts share other helpful tips: Never share an article on social media that you have not read yourself, paid subscriptions will generally give you better quality information, and look for news sources that expose the blind spots on the right and left. Dan in Canada has a thought about the commercialization of space travel and asks if people will have a speciation event. Jim confirms that when the environment changes, we will definitely see this take place, and Dan explains that evolution does not just stop. If you stay in space long enough, you can't return because of how it affects the body. How do you think humans will change if we were to colonize Mars?Kelley Laughlin, joins us to close out the show. We want the truth of the week: Name something that people worry about too much. Jim reminds us that all hardware and software suck. People make mistakes. That's next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast. There's a good chance you've never heard of Francis Stevens. But after today's story you will probably never forget her. She has been called “the woman who invented dark fantasy.” She was born Gertrude Mabel Barrows in Minneapolis Minnesota in 1883. Some say her middle name was Myrtle instead of Mabel but since the state of Minnesota and the county where she was born don't have birth records going back that far we will never know. She wrote her first short story at age 17, a science fiction story titled The Curious Experience of Thomas Dunbar. She mailed the story to Argosy. The story was accepted and published in the March 1904 issue, listing the author as "G. M. Barrows”. Although the initials disguised her gender, this appears to be the first instance of an American female author publishing science fiction, and using her real name. She had only seven short stories published and wrote five novels, with just two released during her lifetime. Dear Readers,They say in schools, February's no joke. Alongside my colleagues, I've certainly been putting in the hours in order to serve our students the best we can. But there's always still reading to be done — not only for this newsletter and our reading community, but also for my own self-care. It makes me happy that I keep getting to do this, week after week. Thank you for reading and supporting Article Club.I have a feeling you're going to like this week's issue. Instead of the regular offering (i.e., four articles), I'm switching things up and sharing with you some great writing and thinking from a variety of genres. Scroll down and you'll find:* an essay about racial appropriation and the end of an interracial friendship* an interview with Susan Dominus about IVF and her article, “Someone Else's Daughter”* an article about the care a park ranger takes in order to support unhoused people in Golden Gate Park* a podcast episode about how young people definitely don't think using generative AI is cheatingAlso, don't miss our pet photo, as well as our poll toward the end. Hope you enjoy. If you like what we're doing here at Article Club, and want to support this venture with a paid subscription, I would be very grateful. It's $5 a month or $36 a year.1️⃣ Dear White SisterI appreciate the work of Tressie McMillan Cottom, so when she recommended Don't Let It Get You Down, a collection of essays by UC Berkeley Law professor Savala Nolan, I knew I needed to check it out. I was not disappointed. As the book's subtitle makes clear, Prof. Nolan writes plainly and thoughtfully about race, gender, and the body. In the chapter, “Dear White Sister,” Prof. Nolan decides whether to approach a close and long-time white friend after an objectionable post on Instagram. In short, the friend quotes Beyoncé's song “Freedom” to celebrate her love for roller skating and progress in roller derby.Prof. Nolan writes: “I feel a peculiar sensation when white people borrow — take — something Black: it's like there's an octopus in my chest, peacefully afloat, when danger suddenly appears. The animal contracts its jellied body and expels a gush of protective ink, then darts away in panic. Don't belittle ‘Freedom,' I hissed inside. ‘Freedom' isn't for a white girl in the Midwest taking up roller derby.”By Savala Nolan • Don't Let It Get You Down • 25 min2️⃣  An Interview With Susan Dominus: “I was just so inspired by the goodness of the people involved.”Many of you read and appreciated January's article of the month, ”Someone Else's Daughter,” by Susan Dominus, which told the story of a horrible IVF mistake that resulted in two women giving birth to the other woman's genetic baby. More importantly, the piece illuminates the generosity of the human spirit, as the mothers, filled with grief and shame for an error they didn't make, embrace each other and figure out a way to raise their children together.I got to interview Ms. Dominus a few weeks back, and hope you take a listen. Over and over again in our conversation, she shared how reporting and writing the piece left her inspired and hopeful. Here's an excerpt: I would say the main thing that I really did want people to feel reading the piece was that same inspired feeling I felt in hearing their stories — that there is always a way, not always, but that when there is conflict or crisis, if you respond with openness and generosity, sometimes beautiful things come of that. That's what I took away as a human being, just being part of it. I was so inspired by the goodness of the people involved and the way that their goodness allowed them to turn something awful into something really beautiful.➡️ Listen to the interview by clicking the play button below.3️⃣ Her Job Is To Remove Homeless People From SF's Parks. Her Methods Are Extraordinary. It's easy to bewail the rise and intractability of homelessness. It's much harder to do something about it. That's why I appreciated reading this article about the efforts of Amanda Barrows, a park ranger for San Francisco Recreation and Parks. In 2015, the government agency launched a new program designed to connect unhoused people with the services they need. Since Ms. Barrows joined the force in 2021, she has helped 60 people leave Golden Gate Park and accept more permanent housing.Reporter Susan Freinkel does an excellent job following Ms. Barrows as she builds relationships with her clients, earns their trust, and listens to what they need. Having grown up in public housing, having lived in a “dodgy SRO” for five years, and having lost her father to a fentanyl overdose, Ms. Barrows says that her work feels natural. “I can relate to a lot of the people who I contact through my own lived experience.”By Susan Freinkel • The San Francisco Standard • 16 min • Gift Link4️⃣ Playboi Farti And His AI Homework MachineIn case there's any doubt: How teenagers think about using generative artificial intelligence in school is very different from how most educators think about it. In essence, we think it's cheating (or plagiarism, or whatever big word we want to use), and they don't. To them, ChatGPT is like a word calculator. Why slog away at a boring five-paragraph essay about The Great Gatsby that's been done millions of times when a robot can do you it for you? That's the essential question of this podcast episode, in which host PJ Vogt tests a theory he holds — that writing is more than answering a teacher's prompt, and that generative AI is more than just a labor-saving tool. It's thinking, he argues, and if we give away thinking to a computer, then our humanity is doomed.By PJ Vogt • Search Engine • 61 min • Apple Podcasts✅ It's time for a quick poll. I'd love to hear from you.Last week, we confirmed that there's no widespread conspiracy to keep this newsletter out of your inbox. We're reacting to a report by The Athletic's Matt Barrows stating the San Francisco 49ers are "Robert Saleh or Bust" as they search for a new defensive coordinator. Is that a good thing or bad thing? Sterling Bennett explains why the 49ers are only hurting themselves by making such a move. Plus, Barrows reveals the favorite for the Niners special teams coordinator job and a potential contingency plan if including New York Jets' interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich. In this episode of the Epigenetics Podcast, we talked with Yadira Soto-Feliciano from MIT about her work on the Menin-MLL complex and the effect of small molecules on its stability in leukemia. We explore the pivotal moments that led her to cancer biology during her graduate studies, where her work included ground-breaking research on the role of the plant homeodomain Finger protein-6 (PHF-6) in leukemia. This work bridged the realms of chromatin accessibility, transcription factors, and cancer cell lineage, providing critical evidence for the concept of lineage plasticity in cancer biology—a topic that has gained significant traction in recent years. Dr. Soto-Feliciano discusses how advances in techniques like CRISPR and ChIP-sequencing have shaped her research, enabling deeper insights into the mechanisms underlying cancer cell identity. As our discussion transitions, Dr. Soto-Feliciano shares her experience in David Allis's lab, illustrating how the collaboration across diverse scientific disciplines enhanced her understanding of chromatin biology and generated significant insights into the mechanics of epigenetic regulation. Highlighting a recent 2023 publication, we unpack her findings related to the conserved molecular switch between MLL1 and MLL3 complexes. These discoveries revealed how the application of small-molecule inhibitors of the menin-MLL interaction can alter gene expression and affect leukemia cells' responses to treatments. We also touch on the operational dynamics within her lab at MIT, established during challenging times marked by the pandemic. Yadira is dedicated to fostering a collaborative and respectful environment among her team, comprised of PhD candidates and research technicians, all sharing a commitment to unraveling the complexities of chromatin regulation. She emphasizes the significance of understanding chromatin scaffold proteins and their role in regulating gene expression and genome organization.   References Soto-Feliciano, Y. M., Bartlebaugh, J. In a world where we're expected to mask our struggles behind a white coat or a suit, finding the courage to be an open book is truly commendable. We all have struggles and setbacks in different forms. Some of us face challenges in our careers, others deal with personal issues, and many of us encounter both at the same time. Whether it's grappling with addiction, experiencing job loss, or dealing with health crises, the journey through these trials can be incredibly tough.    Many of us compartmentalize our pain until it overwhelms us, but acknowledging our challenges is the first step towards healing. When we begin to openly recognize and talk about our difficulties, we take a significant step toward recovery. Embracing this openness allows us to seek the support we need from mentors, coaches, and loved ones. By sharing our experiences and vulnerabilities, we break down the walls of isolation and build connections with others who may have faced similar struggles and provide them with grace we have received.Remember, it's through understanding our struggles and reaching out for support that we transform our challenges into strengths.    Courtney Barrows McKeown, MD is a board-certified general surgeon. She earned her medical degree at New York Medical College, graduating Alpha Omega Alpha. She completed her general surgery residency training in 2020 at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, MA, and received additional subspecialty training in hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB surgery) in the Midwest. She started her career as a community general surgeon in New Hampshire, and is excited for her next opportunity, where she will be moving to TN to join Dr. Vertrees' Columbia Surgical Partners as a general surgeon. Her mission is to provide hope and mentorship to other early career physicians who may be struggling with similar issues she faced, reduce stigma, and help drive systemic changes in order to make our professional climate better for the next generation of surgeons.   In this episode with Dr. Courtney Barrows McKeown, we will learn about the power of resilience, the importance of seeking help, and the value of mentorship in overcoming personal and professional challenges. Dr. McKeown openly discusses the difficulties of dealing with addiction, especially in a high-pressure profession like surgery. Her honesty about her struggles is both courageous and inspiring, shedding light on the often-hidden challenges faced by many professionals. Dr. McKeown's story is a beacon of hope, showing that with perseverance and the right support, we can overcome even the most daunting obstacles.    "It's not my fault that I have a disease, but it is my responsibility to get it treated and then manage it." –  Dr. Courtney Barrows McKeown   Topics Covered: (00:00:34) Introducing our special guest, Dr. Courtney Barrows McKeown (00:02:56) Hitting rock bottom (00:04:01) How acceptance and accountability change Dr. Courtney for the better (00:06:03) Career opportunity through coaching connections (00:08:52) The silent struggles of medical professionals (00:10:37) The value of coaching for physicians (00:13:00) An overcomer by the grace of God (00:17:12) How Dr. Courtney's med school stress sparked a struggle with addiction (00:21:38) Advertisement: Are you prepared for life's unexpected challenges? Today you will have a total Atheist Experience as the one and only Shelley Segal treats us to the best start to the show ever! Jim Barrows and JMike walk us through what does and does not matter when providing evidence just before learning there are holograms in our brains! Shelley provides a beautiful concert to conclude our show. Nick in WI believes that he has found god in the same way he would find a specific car in a car lot. If you were to search for god, what reason would you have to think god exists before you start searching? Why would we care about the characteristics if this god has not been demonstrated to exist? How do you explain a Christian foundation's findings that say prayer has no more effects than a placebo? What does “spiritually alive” mean? Considering the history of the Cananites, how did they get from polytheism to theism? Why blame god for something that is part of you and wanting to know as many true things as possible?Mac in CA has the argument from perennialism to prove god and is described as god has been contacting humans through history. The sound trailed off into underwater territory. Sura in India says there is a strong force that is driving all religions. All religions attempt to explain things we have no control over is a more reasonable explanation than adding a supernatural god to the equation. Why postulate a god for natural phenomena? How do the percentages of people that believe something have any bearing on the truth?Oliver in FL wants to know what science or LGBTQ has to do with atheism and atheists use faith for not having evidence for god. By your definition of faith, what am I believing in as an atheist that I can't substantiate or confirm? What is the entailment for when we continue to ask for evidence? Why would Einstein saying anything get us to believe in this useless god of Spinoza?Angus in NE,  Jesus Mythicist asks what the hosts think of Yahwey or Yesua never saying anything. The same thing can be said of The Hobbit or other stories. What does what someone says prove anything about their existence? Dave in India asks the hosts if they would consent to the point that there is a hologram in their brains. How would that point to god? Personal experience does nothing to move the needle here. How does your brain making you see stuff get us to god? Under what circumstances should we assume the supernatural is real? Why would you believe our lives as atheists are meaningless? That was awesome wasn't it? Thank you for hanging out with us this week! Question of the week is: Why did god really go no contact with people?Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-atheist-experience--3254896/support.

Have an Atheist Experience with Jim Barrows and The Cross Examiner and work through the current challenging issues that both theists and atheists continue to sort through. Chidumeei in PA asks how he is to tell atheists that they are not morally superior.  How do you deal with Christians that think they are morally superior? You take it one step at a time like you do everything else. Many people go through the angry atheist stage, and sometimes this is frustration from learning the Bible is wrong and realizing people have been lied to. If you slow the conversation down, ask for definitions, and look for understanding, people will realize the conversation is more important than the finger pointing. Miguel in CO asks about how society handles transgender people in sports. How does society reconcile the two established facts of transgenderism being real, and the hormonal treatment being good but not perfect? Sports matter more than we think it should, and solutions that we come up with for one sport may not work for another. Maybe early recognition of one being transgender will solve some of the issues. It would be insulting to all genders to just boil it down to not allowing men to compete with women. People do not on a whim just decide to change their gender. Be careful to weed out the lies such as “six year olds getting surgeries”. Brandon in CA wants to know why we embrace the trans community by using pronouns. What problem do you have with inclusion? How has the use of pronouns just come out of nowhere? We are hoping to build a society where it does not matter where you are dropped in, and the bottom rung of the ladder keeps going up so that everybody is included. What skin do you lose by using pronouns?Dan in Canada has just been through the loss of a service dog and wants to know if it is okay to be Catholic without proof of god. How do you feel about believing a story without evidence of your dog being in a better place? What is your community around you now like? You may consider calling The Secular Therapy Project for someone to talk with or Recovering from Religion. It is okay to go to a church; there are times when communities offer more benefits than risks. The thing to look forward to when you do not believe in a god, is the exciting prospect that the future is yours to make and do what you want. Chloe in MI says that the USA is not a Christian nation even though she is a Christian and does not see the attitude of Jesus and putting other people first. How do we define what a true Christian is? What do you think people mean when they say it is a Christian nation? In addition to legal meanings that are wrong on many levels, it could mean that people who are white evangelicals feel like they are losing their power. How do we determine whose interpretation of the Bible is correct? Who has the proper insight to know what the Bible means? We agree the United States is not a Christian nation. Thank you for tuning in this week! Prompt of the week is: How did god the father get out of paying child support? Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-atheist-experience--3254896/support.

What would be the two main costs and benefits to making this decision? Considering this will upset your mom, how long will it take for her to get over it? What will you do if the costs outweigh the benefits? What can be done to help fill the void your mother would feel? Showing support to your family is not the same as believing something. Sometimes you need to play a little peek at a boo with the mask. Don't do it fast and get them scared. Andrew in FL says that Armin failed to debunk the slippery slope argument about sexual relationships being allowed that have no potential for harm. How can you claim a failure when you don't know everything that was said? The potential for harm with incest is much higher than it is with LGBTQ, that is why it is not fair to compare on to another. Incest will have the problem of power dynamics that makes it hard to demonstrate consent. The emotional harm can't be prevented as easily as STDs can. Bjorn in Norway has research that connects consciousness with god and every real life moment has to have the potential of becoming a realization. If you are trying to prove god's existence, please define god beyond a name. What is god? How would you demonstrate this? How can we connect all these random sentences together and tell us why consciousness is necessary? How do you know that something can't exist alone? Why do we care about things that are potential but not probable? How do you know what happened before the Big Bang?Jason in WI has a prophetic message from god about things that will happen. What will happen specifically and what is the exact date and time? Making Barnum statements is not the same as prophecy. Don't waste our time. Jake in AR says the world would be better off without religion. Would a society that has closer beliefs to reality have a better chance of prospering than one that does not have true beliefs? As Forest would say, all models are wrong, and some models are useful.Lucy in Lithuania says that religiosity can breed toxic positivity. We agree and this is also a way for religious governments to take advantage of people. Josef in MI asks what god the hosts have an issue with and uses DNA as an example of why he believes god exists. We have a problem with all claims without evidence. Your interpretation of an experience is going to be heavily influenced by the culture in which you are raised. What do you think a good standard for god is and are we there? It must be proven the designer exists before we can prove that things were designed. Why would we assume that the supernatural or god has anything to do with our existence more than chemicals? Why would DNA being fascinating be an argument for the existence of god? How do we find the creator of the body like we can find the designer of a car?Thank you for tuning in! Question of the week is: Why is Satan competing for god's followers?
