Interview by Angela CroudaceShane Told, the unmistakable voice behind Canadian post-hardcore giants Silverstein, is still riding high as the band marks a staggering 25 years together. In a recent chat with HEAVY, Told opened up about the surreal nature of hitting that milestone—and the unexpected road that brought them there.“It's pretty surreal,” he said. “We've never taken a break—no hiatus, no time off. We've either been writing, recording, or touring the entire time. It's my entire adult life.”Despite the passage of time, Told says he feels better than ever—both mentally and physically. “With age comes confidence. I think I've hit my 10,000 hours of emo,” he joked, referencing the theory that mastery comes with time and repetition. “Every show feels better, my voice feels stronger—it's wild.”Silverstein's resilience and chemistry as a band has a lot to do with their approach to relationships. “We're not best friends who hang out every second, but we're close and we respect each other. We give each other space when we need it,” Told explained. Weekly Zoom calls keep the band in sync, personally and professionally. When asked about a defining moment in Silverstein's journey, Told's answer was rooted in an unforgettable first trip to Australia in 2005. “We thought nobody would know who we were. Then we played two sold-out shows in Brisbane. That was the moment I put the schoolbooks away for good.”That trip also cemented Told's deep affection for Australia. From feeding kangaroos to being hosted by Parkway Drive's Winston McCall's parents—complete with his first-ever avocado toast—Told recalls each visit fondly. “Australia has always shown us so much love. It's my favourite place to tour.”Looking ahead, Silverstein's dual-album release—Antibloom and Pink Mist—is already making waves. Told revealed that the decision to split the music into two records came from a desire to give each song the attention it deserved. “We're perfectionists. Every detail matters to us, and I think fans can hear that.”As Silverstein enters their next chapter, the band's drive remains relentless. “We're still here, and we still give a shit,” Told said. “And we're just getting started.”Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Step into the mind of Chris No. 2 as he takes us back to the origin story of Anti-Flag and what they have been fighting for through music since the start. There have been countless moments over the year where the band's message became dangerous for the members - fights at shows, death threats, and even seeing their merch taken out of big-time stores, but the band never lost focus. This group has been around for 30+ years now and although the path hasn't always been easy, like stated above, it has its rewarding moments, such as connecting the fans and when Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine took notice of their music. Chris No. 2 hopes for a moment where Anti-Flag doesn't have to exist anymore, but for now they are still creating music, recently putting out a record in January labeled, LIES THEY TELL OUR CHILDREN. The record had the likes of McIlrath of Rise Against, Jesse Leach of Killswitch Engage, Shane Told of Silverstein, and Stacey Dee of Bad Cop/Bad Cop. Hello People! Welcome to the When In Yorkshire Podcast, I hope you're all well, we're back with another episode recorded at Slam Dunk 2022. The 2023 festival is just under 3 weeks away and looks to be another awesome day with a line up mixing up some of the best Punk / Rock and bands around with a good blend of legends and new faces. Here I speak to Canadian rocker and host of the great podcast Lead Singer Syndrome: Silverstein vocalist Shane Told who highlights my love of tapping - Brendan and Tyler from Canadian hardcore band COUNTERPARTS and wrapping up this episode is Chuck Ragan and yet another Canadian, Mr Chris Crestwell of Hot Water Music. As I've said before, this was a busy day but filled with conversations featuring absolute heroes and I genuinely enjoyed speaking to and meeting each of these guests. Festival slots can be tricky as these conversations are often very restricted by time and guests are being ushered around a heaving press tent with music from at least 2 stages competing against each other as well as our voices however everyone of the guests from Slam Dunk, not just this episode, were incredibly giving with their responses and hopefully these are as much fun to listen to as they were to record. Here's more about Image/Intent: IMAGE/INTENT journey through purpose and passion, creating an evocative soundscape fit for a voyage of deep introspection. The quintet—Omar Estrada (vocals), Brandon Shay (guitar), Homer Raymundo (bass), Alejandro Gomez (guitar), and Jake Burgess (drums)—carefully coalesce ethereal elements, crushing riffs, and hard-hitting choruses to reshape the world of metalcore through their heartfelt lyricism and authentic expression. IMAGE/INTENT offer a realm of thoughtful escapism, establishing their unwavering intention and vision to motivate beyond solely sound. With their breakout single “Ryan Gosling” being featured on numerous Spotify playlists—including Release Radar and New Scene Sunday by Jesea Lee—and earning praise from Silverstein frontman Shane Told, among multiple podcast and music review sites, like Sunday Service with Chris Fronzak and Metalcore Nerds, audiences are bound to connect with IMAGE/INTENT no matter where they are. Shane Told is the lead singer of the band Silverstein. A band that has been around since the year 2000 and while that may surprise some people, their extremely dedicated and hardcore fanbase will probably be like, "psh where have you been?" With the release of their 10th studio album 'Misery Made Me' it seems like they are finally posed to play in the mainstream. The beauty is they've gotten here by doing it their own way and sticking to what they do best.

Canadian punk outfit Silverstein return today with their tenth studio album Misery Made Me, a collection of songs that dares the inner punk to not come out to play.Over a career spanning more than two decades Silverstein have been the voice for disenfranchised youth the world over, with their steadfast approach to music and refusal to confirm to passing fads and trends ensuring they stood the test of time.Vocalist Shane Told sat down to chat with HEAVY about the new album and how it came to be."We wrote this one in the pandemic and it was not an easy record to write,” he began. “Obviously, with everything that we all went through in Canada and Australia, literally the whole world went through a lot of darkness and that's pretty much what this record stems from. When we actually finished writing it and we got together in the studio and hung out together for the first time we had a blast making it. We got to experiment with a lot of cool, different sounds and really put together some unique songs. We're really happy with this album. I think there's something on here for everybody."The press release calls Misery Made Me a step back to Silverstein's punk and hardcore roots, a claim not refuted by Told."I think there's definitely some songs that would fit,” he agreed. “If you listen to a song like Die Alone, if you listen to Don't Wait Up, certainly those songs have elements of some throwback tone and vibe. I think that that's something that we like to do here and there. At the same time, we like to push forward and try to make new things as well. A song like The Altar/Mary, that's quite a bit experimental for us and quite a bit different, so I think it's a mixed bag. I think our older fans will definitely find this record to be for them, and I think that maybe people that are just discovering our band for the first time will also think we sound pretty modern too. It's a good place to be in and it does feel god to be able to make that kind of record."In the full interview, Shane talks more about the songs on the album, the balance between moving forward musically while still clinging onto your heritage, the title and how it fits in with the album, allowing themselves freedom to write and record, tour plans and more.

Every album that Silverstein have come out with has stood on its own with a unique character and direction – Dead Reflection is a far more intense and personal album for the band than anything they’ve previously released. The ninth studio album from the Canadian post-hardcore group is an accomplishment they’re ready to celebrate, and a time they’re wanting to reflect upon, with Australia when the band tour in May. “We went out on a limb with some of the production we did and the chances we took,” says vocalist Shane Told. “We’ve progressed over the years relatively slowly – if you compare some of our newer albums with some of our first, they are very different but the path to get there made sense and I think our fans appreciate that. “Dead Reflection was a record I needed to make – I was in a dark place and creatively, I needed to channel that a little bit, make a record that was dark and [was] big-sounding, production-wise, and encompassed the lyrical subject matter into the production.”In not taking their time in developing each album, Told agrees that this release would have resulted in a very different album. “We do put out a record every other year like clockwork,” he says, “I think it’s all about putting in the work, I think, and finding that time and place.“I was going through a pretty dark time - For me it was a little bit cathartic to make that music, therapeutic in a way to get that stuff out of me because I had been holding it in for the better part of a year – that combination came together and we weer able to make a pretty special record. That self-applied therapy helped Told to not only release Dead Reflection but helped him to move forward. “A lot of the time when somebody writes a record, it’s like they’re looking back on something – for me, it wasn’t, I was in the midst of it, I was writing about things and I wasn’t sure what was going to happen to me. “Dead Reflection is a new story, starting with the trauma I faced and then leading into the end of the record, being like, ‘When is my wake-up call going to happen?’ “When I wrote ‘Wake Up’ and ‘Whiplash’, those were not about things that had happened, those were about things I thought were going to happen to me by staying on this path – by writing about them, it made them very real, scared me straight a little bit. I was in such a bad place, I felt worthless.“Once we came up with the lyrics for Dead Reflection, it pulled me out of the funk a little bit, made me feel I am capable, that I do have value – a combination of things pulled me out of it and today, I’ve never felt better. I used to think I was happy years ago but now I know I wasn’t, because I am now.”

Matt's old friends Shane Told and Billy Hamilton of Silverstein join this week and we break down three never-before-heard demos, one of which later became Silverstein's most popular song "My Heroin" that almost didn't make the record. They also discuss what makes touring so frequently successful or not, and a funny tour story Billy loves to tell about Matt calling him Stupid Bill.   ******  Links:  Break it Down: http://www.breakitdownpodcast.net/  Silverstein: http://www.silversteinmusic.com/ Learn more about your ad choices. Shane Told, lead singer of Silverstein joins Mike this week.  Shane Told has a story to tell and he does it well, first with his band Silverstein, but second his solo material River Oaks, or now his recent endeavor into the fray of podcasting with a great show called Lead Singer Syndrome where he talks to… yup, lead singers about the craft, the life, the layers of the people you listen to sing their hearts out. It's a great concept and I'm gonna be on the program soon enough. Stay tuned for that as well. Here's a little bio from his page but the sure way to enlightenment is to listen to this episode. "What is it like to be one of the most important members of a band? Shane Told, frontman of the critically-acclaimed rock band Silverstein, brings you candid interviews with all of your favorite singers on this podcast. Is it really all sex, drugs, and rock 'n roll? Find out for yourself on Lead Singer Syndrome." - http://www.jabberjawmedia.com/lead-singer-syndrome   In this episode we know we are being watched and listened to but you'll have to listen to really grasp the creepiness of what we are talking about. This is also the first episode of the Mike Herrera Hour in collaboration with Jabber Jaw. It's a way to collaborate more on the podcasting end of things. I like what Shane is doing and I'm liking the Break it Down Podcast with Matt Carter. In terms of content, those two shows go with my show pretty well. So we're all in good company. Another easy way to get to the show and other great shows. Click the link below to see my page on Jabber Jaw. We discuss managing expectations, his own identity and neglecting Canada at the beginning of the bands career.
