SILVERSTEIN At 25: SHANE TOLD Reflects On Passion, Longevity, And Global Impact

Interview by Angela CroudaceShane Told, the unmistakable voice behind Canadian post-hardcore giants Silverstein, is still riding high as the band marks a staggering 25 years together. In a recent chat with HEAVY, Told opened up about the surreal nature of hitting that milestone—and the unexpected road that brought them there.“It's pretty surreal,” he said. “We've never taken a break—no hiatus, no time off. We've either been writing, recording, or touring the entire time. It's my entire adult life.”Despite the passage of time, Told says he feels better than ever—both mentally and physically. “With age comes confidence. I think I've hit my 10,000 hours of emo,” he joked, referencing the theory that mastery comes with time and repetition. “Every show feels better, my voice feels stronger—it's wild.”Silverstein's resilience and chemistry as a band has a lot to do with their approach to relationships. “We're not best friends who hang out every second, but we're close and we respect each other. We give each other space when we need it,” Told explained. Weekly Zoom calls keep the band in sync, personally and professionally. When asked about a defining moment in Silverstein's journey, Told's answer was rooted in an unforgettable first trip to Australia in 2005. “We thought nobody would know who we were. Then we played two sold-out shows in Brisbane. That was the moment I put the schoolbooks away for good.”That trip also cemented Told's deep affection for Australia. From feeding kangaroos to being hosted by Parkway Drive's Winston McCall's parents—complete with his first-ever avocado toast—Told recalls each visit fondly. “Australia has always shown us so much love. It's my favourite place to tour.”Looking ahead, Silverstein's dual-album release—Antibloom and Pink Mist—is already making waves. Told revealed that the decision to split the music into two records came from a desire to give each song the attention it deserved. “We're perfectionists. Every detail matters to us, and I think fans can hear that.”As Silverstein enters their next chapter, the band's drive remains relentless. “We're still here, and we still give a shit,” Told said. “And we're just getting started.”Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Interview by Kris PetersThe 2025 APRA MUSIC AWARDS are almost upon us, and after the overwhelming success of last year's debut category Most Performed Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Work, anticipation is once again high amongst Australia's fastest-growing music genre as five more Aussie acts are in the running to be recognized globally for their achievements. Not that winning awards are the be-all, end-all for band's, but a bit of reward for effort is never a bad thing! This year sees Make Them Suffer, Northlane, Polaris, Windwaker and Speed nominated for the gong, with Windwaker's frontman Liam Guinane joining HEAVY earlier today to talk all things APRA and beyond."Honestly, it was quite unexpected given the calibre of bands that we're up against," Guinane said of Windwaker's nomination. "So I'm quite honoured to be considered next to some of these pillars of heavy music currently in Australia. It feels terrific to be put amongst those names and to be a part of it. I'm really looking forward to the night. It seems like it's going to be a fantastic evening and, yeah, very much uncharted territory for us being recognised like this (laughs)."In the full interview, Liam discussed the band's recent nomination for the APRA Music Awards, expressing both surprise and honour at being recognized alongside established Australian bands. The conversation included thoughts on the competitive landscape among Australian bands, with Liam emphasizing Windwaker's distinct sound and broader appeal. He also considered whether to prepare a speech, leaning towards improvisation but recognizing the need for some preparation. We spoke about some of the lighter sides of the awards, including the chance of a heavier band performing on the night, last year's winners Parkway Drive and getting fashion tips from Winston McCall, Windwaker's latest tour and how the new songs were received live and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Interview by Kris PetersWhile the annual APRA Music Awards have always celebrated the abundance of talent coursing through the Australian musical landscape, the focus has always been on the more mainstream artists and side of the industry.Hard rock and heavy metal have long been touted for inclusion, but for varying reasons have never quite made it onto the big stage for Australia's most prestigious awards.Until now.The 2024 APRA Music Awards will, for the very first time, include a category which rewards and recognises this country's strong and growing stronger metal scene with the inclusion of the inaugural Most Performed Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Work category. The point could - and will - be argued that heavy music should have been included long before this, but in the overall scheme of things, the fact this category has been introduced is recognition and vindication of how much heavy music is progressing in our own backyard. It is just reward for a scene and genre that has never claimed to be for the masses, but through sheer weight of listening numbers has ensured long overdue acceptance in the public spotlight.Nominees for the category this year include Alpha Wolf, Polaris, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, The Amity Affliction and Parkway Drive, all bands who have played a significant role in the increased growth of heavy music both here and abroad. To celebrate this landmark event, HEAVY tracked down Winston McCall from Parkway Drive to discuss just what something like this means to Australian heavy music."It's sick," he smiled. "It's awesome that they have added that category. Awards are humbling in general. I'm really stoked for more recognition for our scene and community, full stop. Because right now it just seems like… it's honestly bigger than it's ever been. The more that we can do to push that forward and make people recognise it, the better for it. For us to get an award, sweet, I'm stoked the award exists with a bunch of really, really cool bands."As good as it is to have APRA finally recognise the heavy music community, their hand has been pushed somewhat by the continued expansion of artists within this genre. It is a sense of pride to everyone in the metal scene, and one not lost on the bigger fish like Parkway Drive."Yeah, 100%," McCall agreed. "And that's the way it works. At the base of that, the really cool thing is being involved in a scene where situations like that come about because of the community behind it. It's like an engaged scene of people. Everyone pays attention to everything that's going on. Everyone supports everything. Not every scene is doing as well as ours at this point in time. Post-COVID it's been difficult, but I look out there, and I see people who still care about this music that is their passion and still support it 110% and look at where it is now."In the full interview, Winston expressed pride in the Australian music scene and the community's support for the genre, discussed his upcoming attendance at the awards night and his lack of preparation for a potential speech. The conversation also included a lighthearted exchange about sending photos of outfits and the casual approach to the event.Winston also reflected on Parkway Drive's 20th-anniversary tour later this year, expressing gratitude for the band's journey and the community's support. He shared insights on the band's supports for the tour and discussed the challenges of managing the unexpected popularity. Additionally, Winston discussed the band's upcoming European festivals and Australian tour, hinting at new music in the works but expressing a preference to focus on the existing material during the tour.

Parkway Drive played London last night. I couldn't make it, but I did manage to grab frontman Winston McCall for a pre-soundcheck chat about the worrying statement that led to his group's cancelation of their north American tour earlier this year. “The relentless nature of being in this band has given us very little time to reflect on who we are as individuals, who we want to be and the toll it is taking on ourselves and our friendships,” they wrote. And then, three months later, came album seven, Darker Still. What's going on there? It's all good apparently, but here's Winston to explain…Have you signed up for the Spoook Substack, yet?

Parkway Drive can no longer be claimed as “just” an Australian band. They are a band that are recognized, known, and loved as a global metal sensation and rightfully so.While the boys will always hold Australia and their musical background close to their hearts, the simple fact is they belong on the world stage and we have to share them. After decimating German crowds with their scintillating live performance at Wacken in 2019 and the subsequent release of the live DVD from that same show last year, Parkway Drive are now a band that commands – and gets – respect from all corners of the globe. With their first show in almost two years coming up at this weekends Knight & Day festival, vocalist Winston McCall caught up with HEAVY to give us some exciting news, including an exclusive update on new material."Yeah dude, it's a big deal,” he smiled when asked how significant being asked to headline Knight & Day is. “It's a massive deal. Not only is it 'yo, headlining a festival' and 'yo, it's in a castle', 'New Years eve'. It's also first gig back after lockdown, it's our first gig in two years. It's literally a monumental event which is pretty nuts. We're stoked. We're really, really stoked. It's been a long time so we're keen to get back."With a diverse line up that ranges from rock to punk to all out heavy metal, Knight & Day is not only the first major festival to return to Australia after the recent world events, it is also the first chance for many of our local artists to play alongside some of this countries biggest acts."Right now... it was important before this, but right now it's more important than ever,” McCall said. “We've always done whatever we can to try and bring as many artists through as we can. We're from a small town and we know how hard it is to make any kind of break or any kind of career out of an artform. Art in Australia is a very hard thing to make a job out of full stop, so for festivals to put that effort into these kind of line ups... yeah, it's massive. It's absolutely massive. After what's been going on when basically our entire industry got zero support from governments, like the arts gets the chop again during this whole thing, so this is a huge, huge platform for bands that may not have even been able to launch in the first place or bands that have been cut off at the knees and this is our chance to come back. I'm stoked for everyone to be having this shot."In the full interview Winston talks more about the importance of home grown festivals to the future of Australian music, what song they might be playing as the clock strikes midnight, the pranksters on the line-up and who he expects to be the main instigators, regaining the band's momentum, the live album and recent video, an exclusive reveal on new music and more.

We are celebrating 50 Episodes of Wall of Sound: Up Against The Wall with a Very Special Parkway Drive dedicated show featuring the band's legendary frontman Mr Winston McCall who is on co-host duties chatting all about the band's new #1 album Reverence and their upcoming tour with Killswitch Engage and Thy Art is Murder. Since the band formed in 2003, they've released six incredibly mesmerising albums, each release outdoing the last in terms of style, ferociousness and progression, however, when you accumulate a fanbase who are too hellbent on living in the past, you constantly find yourself having to defend your motives and actions when changing up styles as the years go by and Winston isn't afraid to address the backlash and resentment targetted towards him and the Parkway boys in his chat with podcast host Browny. The conversation also leads to why they have never brought their European shows to Australia (considering they formed here in Byron Bay) and what it's like having Killswitch opening for them now, years after their guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz perduced their first two releases. We've also got two very special guests joining in the conversation including Graham Nixon, the band's Manager and head honcho of Resist Records, who signed them wayyy back in the day. He talks about their early years, how he discovered them and shares a few stories along the way + Dan McMaster, frontman for the now defunct pop punk act Skyway also chats about how they managed to get Winston McCall to do guest vocals on one of their songs and what it was like working with him in the studio and on the stage at one of the shows both bands played. Plus we travel through the band's extensive back catalogue of albums, kicking things off with 2005's Killing with a Smile, then stopping by Horizons (2007), Deep Blue (2010), Atlas (2012) and Ire (2015), all the way through to their 2018 release Reverence. There's also a few surprises along the way too, so strap yourself in for one of the most extensive Parkway Drive podcasts available, coming in at just over two hours, we guarantee you'll love every minute of it.
