In the latest episode of the No Limitations podcast The Middle-Class Artist, Blenheim Partners' Gregory Robinson speaks with Jaddan Comerford, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of UNIFIED Music Group. In a relaxed discussion, we learn of Jaddan's pioneering and entrepreneurial journey into the rough and tumble of the music world. Starting out at the age of 17 as a one-man band in his parent's home, pursuing a dream, he learned on the fly, broke with tradition, and successfully reshaped the industry and the way we think about the business of music. In so doing, he has captured the imagination and support of emerging music talent and future greats, providing them with the platform and support to unlock and unleash their potential on the local and world stage. Jaddan lifts up the stage curtain, sharing with us the early days, the experimentations, the wins and the major breakthroughs. We uncover what lies ahead, the power of social media and new technologies, as we leave the dark days of COVID-19 behind and embrace the renaissance in music and all its creativity.   Jaddan founded UNIFIED Music Group, an independent multi-service music company in 2011 and has attracted prominent artists such as Vance Joy, Dashboard Confessional, and Ocean Alley. This followed his debut in the industry, with the launch of Boomtown Records in 2002. Alongside UNIFIED, he's a Co-Founder and Start-up Investor at Side Stage Ventures, a venture capital fund, focused on building the ecosystem and supporting innovative companies, such as Heaps Normal, Vitruvian, Mr Yum, and Tixel.   Please note: this episode was recorded on 3 July 2023.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Their latest album, Low Altitude Living has been blowing up and they've been out promoting it all over the world including two tours of the U.S. in 2022. Go to oceanalley.com.au for music, videos, tour dates and more. Mitch and I have a great conversation about how their music is influenced by their home in the North Beaches of New South Wales, playing all over Europe and America, surfing, their songwriting process and more. After that, I talk to Slovakian, avant-garde/jazz guitar player, David Kollar who was in town making an album with legendary drummer, Pat Mastelotto (King Crimson). His incredibly unique style comes from a combo of influences including eastern european classical, jazz, ambient music techno and more. The globally celebrated guitar player has scored 18 films, won a ton of awards and he's constantly collaborating with other amazing artists. Go to davidkollar.com for music, videos, tour dates and more. David and I have a great conversation about his journey in music, pushing the guitar into new areas musically and sonically, his use of electronics and technology, his many collaborations and projects including Komara with Pat Mastelotto and much more! After a slow start to the year due to extended government pandemic restrictions, the Australian live business burst back with encouraging figures. The response from industry leaders was that the domestic live sector is going into a golden era. Promoters and venue operators are not only expecting a solid return in 2023, but a robust 2024 as well. Looking at the Pollstar results, it is obvious the promoters and venues who took planning risks in the last few years of lockdown are now reaping the benefits. Meanwhile, Australian summer festival favourite Lost Paradise has announced a different kind of lineup. Organisers of the Central Coast event have just unveiled an extensive health and wellness program for this year's New Years bash, dubbed Shambhala Fields. It lines up an array of health, wellness and music-based workshops, talks, First Nations spaces and more, featuring some big names including: Triple j science guru Dr Karl master yogi Simon Borg-Olivier classically-trained dancer model and social media star Mimi Elashiry Byron Hinterlands-Bundjalung region based artist radio host Luen and many more! Described as an “oasis for boundary-pushing thinkers where curiosity is key”, the Shambhala Fields program will be packed with: Yoga classes belly dancing workshops deep tissue massages and countless other mind, body and soul-nourishing activities, in keeping with the festival's proud reputation as a place for exchanging future-facing ideas. There will be a cultural program completely orchestrated by First Nation Australians from Darkinjung country, as well as essential growth offering, Healing Haven, which will offer tarot card readings, acupuncture and loads more. This is all, of course, in addition to the Lost Paradise music lineup, which shares many artists in common with the 2022-23 Falls Festival, including headliners Arctic Monkeys, Lil Nas X, Peggy Gou and Jamie xx. There are plenty of local names too, such as G Flip, Ocean Alley and Genesis Owusu, and an enormous roster of DJs. Thanks for listening! Be sure to subscribe for more content. Sunny Smith is the solo project of Sydney-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Chris Smithson (The Kava Kings, Caravana Sun). Chris released his debut track, Ziggy, under the moniker in November 2020 with a five-track EP slated for release in early 2021. A debut eight years in the making, Chris first knew music was for him when he skipped out on a year 10 trial exam to go on tour with his band, The Kava Kings and hasn't looked back from massive international festival stages across Germany to a disorganised show at a public pool in Italy. Chris isn't new to the scene with three European tours under his belt with The Kava Kings and Caravana Sun supporting follow big acts, The Skatalites (Jamaica) and Ozomatli (USA) . As well as wearing a track around Australia having supported John Butler, Lime Cordiale, Birds of Tokyo, Ocean Alley and The Beautiful Girls. Inspired by Tame Impala, Gorillaz and Neil Young with a slice of Andy Shauf, Blake Mills, Ethan Gruska and Whitney thrown in the mix inspired Chris to create the sound that is Sunny Smith. The dreamy three minute thirty track lives up to the Sunny Smith name transporting you to beachside scenes with musing of the future. Ziggy explores the feeling of anemoia, that nostalgic feeling for a time you've never known, and is inspired by the many stages of life, the different goals we all aspire to big and small culminating at that moment where you crossover from person to parent. Written during a self-described songwriting drought, Ziggy was the muse to allow Sunny Smith to pour his heart into “the most honest writing I've ever done”. This underpinned honesty coupled with inspiration from the likes of Andy Shauf, Blake Mills and The Police create a dreamy track perfectly timed for you to walk to and create your own sense of anemoia. Sunny Smith jumped into the studio with Sydney drummer and producer legend, Declan Kelly (Bernard Fanning, Katie Noonan, Kasey Chambers) to bring Ziggy to life. “The morning we started on Ziggy, Declan thought we should lay down a guide drum track to create a good foundation for the song. We both loved that take so much we kept it, and the song grew from that point on. The beat doesn't change for the whole song. It's just so nice when something unplanned becomes such an integral part of a song.” Chris Smithson, SunnySmith. Visit www.onespace.love

Rock'N Vino: A Pairing of Music & Wine

The Rock'N Vino podcast sits down with BottleRock Co-Founder and Partner of BottleRock Presents Dave Graham about this year's line-up. Find out about what's new, what's happening, and what to expect from the year's festival as long as a breakdown from Coco and Mike on this year's line-up. NAPA — BottleRock Napa Valley producers today unveiled the lineup for the seventh incarnation of their annual wine country festival, held at the Napa Valley Expo between May 24 and 26—Memorial Day weekend. This year's lineup features a new twist with the festival featuring dual headlining sets each night. Friday includes alt-rockers Imagine Dragons and rapper Logic. Saturday has Neil Young and Promise of the Real, along with R&B superstar Pharrell Williams. Rootsy rock band Mumford & Sons and guitar virtuoso Santana will close out the festival on Sunday, May 26. The lineup again features more than 80 artists over the three days. "We've expanded the capability of the second stage," BottleRock CEO Dave Graham said. "We wanted to be able to attract some major acts to play the second stage at the same time the main stage was playing, and that's exactly what we did this year." The bill is rounded out by a slate of eclectic artists, including Sylvan Esso, OneRepublic, Flogging Molly, Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats, Cypress Hill, Tash Sultana, Lord Huron, Big Boi, Bishop Briggs, Jeff Goldbum & The Mildred Snitzer Orchestra and others. Graham said the addition of Young is particularly meaningful this year. "Neil Young has not performed in the Bay Area, publicly, since the last Bridge School Benefit Concert back in 2016," he said. "What an honor for us to have a legend like him up on our stage." BottleRock will again feature it's culinary stage pairing celebrity chefs with musicians, actors and Bay Area luminaries cooking up unique dishes for festivalgoers, along with the festival's focus on the region's best food and wine. The culinary stage lineup will be announced in April. "This year, BottleRock is also a part of the prize offerings for [TV show] Top Chef, so the winner will get an appearance on the Culinary Stage this year," Graham said. Last year, more than 120,000 camp out to see performances by Bruno Mars, The Killers, Muse and others. Tickets go on sale Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the festival's website. Prices range from $359 for a three-day general admission pass up to $1,599 for a three-day Skydeck and VIP Viewing passes. Platinum Passes for BottleRock, which cost upwards of $4,000, are sold out.
