Welcome to Watchers of Tomorrow! A podcast where we go through the world of science fiction television episode by episode, talking about the themes, concepts, ideas, the good, the bad, and the weird. We are great fans of sci-fi and would like to invite you on our journey through the funky and strange worlds that we are to explore… Today's episode: Where is that signal coming from? What does it mean? Why is everyone on this planet Irish? And from the 1800s? And why are there clones everywhere? What does this title mean? Did Riker commit murder? What is bodily autonomy? Why am I asking so many questions?!? ... yeah that sums up today's kind of infamous episode that ends with shotgun marriages all around. ====== Who are we? This week we find the Enterprise in the middle of a dilemma. After receiving SOS's from two planets, one with a no technology and one with an advanced society, but both with problems that cannot seemingly be solved the crew must figure out how to best resolve this new dilemma. Through a series of awkward events, conversations and accidents Captain Picard finally comes up with a plan that will benefit all involved and get the guests off the Enterprise for good. Will the Irish takeover the Enterprise? Can a chicken fly? Does Worf have a childhood illness? Will Pulaski survive drinking poisonous tea? Can Riker wash feet? Will you laugh while watching this? How much grey is too much grey? All these questions and more will be answered on this week's episode of Hailing Frequencies Open.
The arrival of Riker's Beard heralded the start of the shift towards a more updated, distinct Star Trek, ready for the Next Generation of fans. While many will tell new explorers of Trek to skip over season 2, we love it for its inconsistency and the truly high highs that you only get by introducing the Borg, or debating the nature of sentience (should be sapience but we'll let it slide) on behalf of our beloved Data. Join us as we discuss those highs (and some of the lows), as well as give a bit of a history of what was going on behind the scenes. Episode Sponsor: SudVPN! Keep your data safe in these trying times! Bicks Log: Does artificial intelligence require sentience to be considered intelligent? Do AIs as we understand them now deserve rights? What will happen when computer systems are given – or acquire – consciousness? Notes: As a reminder, this was recorded before Picard Season 3 aired, so there may be some odd references. When the Enterprise receives an automated distress signal, two human societies on the verge of collapse are discovered. One steeped in stereotype and the other experiencing replicative fade, a dangerous secret leads to the abduction of Enterprise crew members. This week Ruthie and Matthew are joined by Ruthie's sister Jake Szamosi, a biologist who weighs in on the ethics of cloning, spinning wheels, and if we indeed own our own genetic material.

We're back in the holodeck with two of its biggest fans this week! First up: Reg Barclay and Deanna Troi drop by from TNG to help everyone's favorite neurotic genius get over his latest addiction while he tries to get in touch with our far-flung heroes in "Pathfinder". After that, Janeway has set aside the dreary Lord Burleigh for a strapping Irish publican (with a few tweaks) who serves a town of stereotypes in "Fair Haven"! This week we are joined by the lovely Laura Marie Donnelly to discuss the Enterprise's incredibly offensive trip to the planet Ireland.
"Now hear this. Now hear this. On this week's episode we reach into the archives of our old series called, Trek Talk, bonus episodes previously recorded for our members-only podcast. And on this episode Nathan and Dean get together and hang out with the space Irish. Worf gets the Klingon version of the measles, drinks poison tea, and reminds us of his pride and courage. Picard makes a call to Crusher and begs her to return to the show. The lads get into some of the terms presented this week like: European Hegemony and Neo Transcendentalists. It's a TNG episode that feels like it could have been in the Original Series, and the good captain seems as if he is completely uninterested in his passengers and doing his best to dump them at first opportunity. Fortunately, we find some clones and they need breeding stock, so the space Irish will have to make a decision - embrace polyandry or be vented into space by an irritable Picard. Nate wants Riker to murder clone babies, and Dean talks about the Blade Runner replicants and their lack of emotional development -- again. We present to you, Up the Long Ladder, from Star Trek: The Next Generation." Season 2 - Episode 18 Connect with us! Starfleet tasks the Enterprise to respond to a distress signal from a forgotten Earth colony endangered by those darn solar flares. Picard and company have no choice but to beam the colony aboard to relocate them, and lo and behold, the colony is filled to the barrelhead with Irish stereotypes and farm animals. When the leader of the Bringlodi, Daniel Odell, asks about their fellow colony, the Enterprise discovers Mariposa, a colony populated with clones! Mariposa teeters on the brink of extinction as their limited genetic stock has reached a dead end, but when they ask the Enterprise crew if they are feeling generous enough to donate some of their own "life-giving" DNA, Riker and company swiftly refuse. So we have a ship filled with the Irish cast of a Green Acres remake, a planet full of sterile, fading clones, and Riker making first contact the hard way. All this and Worf makes tea on this exciting episode of ST:TNGeez!
It seems the space Irish don't mix well with asexual cloners. The Enterprise saves a centuries-old human colony from the European Union, er, Hegemony which is inhabited only by American stereotypes of Irish people. It's lazily played for laughs, and Riker enjoys some sexy times from a fiery guest star, but then the episode takes a turn where the sister colony's prime minister steals Riker and Pulaski's DNA. Oops! Let's abort those clones quick. Then they all decide to force these two peoples to breed, which feels wrong on multiple levels. Kate hosts and makes sure to note how Pulaski and Worf smash, Jimmie has feelings for Riker, Erik says his people don't always need their whiskey, and Greg's nostalgia for this episode gets the better of him. This week, we're joined by the brilliant Linda (@HenInAHat1) to talk about TNG's Up the Long Ladder, in which Picard and the gang have to deal with a bunch of Space Irishmen who seem to be entirely based on Irish Stereotypes from the 19th century. It really doesn't improve from that low.
On this episode, Jeff Akin reviews Star Trek The Next Generation, Up the Long Ladder (Season 2, Episode 18). He will examine the leadership approaches of Captain Picard and Dr. Pulaski. Dr. Pulaski shows us what it looks like to stand up for and defend the dignity of a co-worker or a team member, while Picard demonstrates the value of just laughing at something when there isn't anything more you can do about it.

Star Trek TNG S2E18 Up The Long Ladder
One day, we will stop fencing over the nature of Riker and Troi's relationship. Today is not that day. Also, the Hellghast are from the Killzone video game. It's hard to say, “I'd rather watch a 40-minute anti-abortion allegory than watch this episode,” but I'd mean it. Every time. How many other, actually productive, directions could this thing have gone into?

Woof. There is good campiness and then there is BAD campiness. This episode definitely falls in the bad campiness...er...camp. We had such a fun time transposing first season TNG episodes to fourth season TOS episodes, we thought we'd do it again! This time we're looking at the Next Generation's second season for potential adventures that could've easily been part of The Original Series' fifth. Could Uhura have been the mother of The Child? What if Harry Mudd was The Outrageous Okana? Double the Shantner, double the fun in Time Squared?
