The arrival of Riker's Beard heralded the start of the shift towards a more updated, distinct Star Trek, ready for the Next Generation of fans. While many will tell new explorers of Trek to skip over season 2, we love it for its inconsistency and the truly high highs that you only get by introducing the Borg, or debating the nature of sentience (should be sapience but we'll let it slide) on behalf of our beloved Data. Join us as we discuss those highs (and some of the lows), as well as give a bit of a history of what was going on behind the scenes. Episode Sponsor: SudVPN! Keep your data safe in these trying times! Bicks Log: Does artificial intelligence require sentience to be considered intelligent? Do AIs as we understand them now deserve rights? What will happen when computer systems are given – or acquire – consciousness? Notes: As a reminder, this was recorded before Picard Season 3 aired, so there may be some odd references. This week we find the Enterprise missing two crew members. Captain Picard and acting Ensign Crusher make there way to Starbase 515, Wesley for his Starfleet Academy Entrance Exam and Captain Picard for a medical procedure that Dr Pulaski ensures him he's put off for too long. Wesley, not looking forward to spending several long hours alone with the Captain, is nervous and awkward while Captain Picard (who simply wants to read his book) is equally awkward and somewhat irritated. Meanwhile, back on the ship, the crew responds to a distress call from a ship crewed by the Pakleds, a not particularly intelligent race of beings. The Pakleds are in over there heads with their vessel which contains technology from various species none of which the Pakleds know how to operate. The Enterprises crew's efforts to help lead in a kidnapping and mind games which leave them all shaken and Captain Picard on the verge of death. Will Wesley and Picard make it to the Starbase without embarrassment? Can Geordi repair the damaged Pakled ship? Is Captain Picard tired of Dr. Pulaski? What is the deadly Crimson force field? All these questions are more will be answered in this week episode of Hailing Frequencies Open.
LaForge is placed in grave danger when the Enterprise responds to distress call from the Pakleds who need things to make them go...like our chief engineer! On a shuttlecraft road-trip with Wesley, Picard shares details of his "cocky" youth which led to a (literally) broken heart requiring surgery. But the surgeons can't stop the "heterocyclic declination"!! Matthew and Ruthie talk about being awkward in social situations, the soul of exploration, and geometry in SPAAAAACE!

This encore episode is double the size than a typical Trek Untold because it's actually two shows in one! This is because I first interviewed Lycia Naff at the end of November 2020, and nearly a year later, we did it again since her journey in Star Trek had just resumed. Lycia Naff is known best to Star Trek fans for her two appearances in "Star Trek: The Next Generation" as Ensign Sonya Gomez from the second season episodes "Q Who" and "Samaritan Snare." Over 30 years later, Lycia returned to the franchise to reprise Sonya in "Lower Decks," only this time she was now a captain of her own ship, the USS Archimedes! Although Gomez was originally meant to be a love interest for Geordi LaForge, things didn't work out for Ensign Gomez after spilling her hot chocolate on Captain Picard. Lycia tells us the behind-the-scenes story about what happened to her character and what happened to the third episode she was meant to appear in that would have changed Geordi's character. Plus, memories of seeing the Borg in their debut appearance, working with the cast & crew, including having to spill hot liquids on Patrick Stewart, and why she believes Ensign Gomez never returned... until she miraculously did in the second season of LDS. In our second portion of the interview that took place a year after the first, Lycia discussed what got her out of retirement to take the role, what it was like reprising this fan-favorite character, and all the in's and out's of being on a Star Trek show again. You may also recognize Lycia from her role in "Total Recall" as the three-breasted mutant hooker on Mars! Lycia recalls working with Paul Verhoeven and Arnold Schwarzenegger in this iconic and memorable role, with some happy stories and one "explosive" tale. Lycia explains why she left acting and pursued journalism, leading to one of her biggest stories, when she broke the news about the Bill Cosby sexual assault allegations. We talk about the investigation, the fallout from this story, and how it changed the landscape of modern feminism. We also chat about her not-for-profit group, Drive-By Do-Gooders, and in this pair of interviews, we see what changed as COVID continued ravaging LA's homeless communities. Plus, horror stories of working with Debbie Allen on the "Fame" TV series, sharing the screen with Daryl Hannah in "Clan of The Cave Bear," her time in "Hunter" and "Lethal Weapon," riding motorcycles & killing the undead in the B-movie "Chopper Chicks in Zombietown" and a few other Hollywood tales. Visit https://www.drivebydogooders.org/ to donate to the cause, and if you donate $35 or more, Lycia will send you an autographed picture. In the comments section where you donate, include your name and address and what pic you would like, and Lycia will send it on your way! Note: This episode discusses sensitive topics, including sexual assault. It is uncensored, and the content may be disturbing to some. Discretion is advised. Picard and Wes are both due at Starbase 515; Wes for more Starfleet exams, and the captain for a medical procedure he's too proud to have done on the Enterprise D, a replacement of his artificial heart. Wait, Picard has an artificial heart? While he and Wes shuttle across the galaxy to their various appointments, Riker and company answer a mayday from a disabled ship crewed by a race who appear to be offensive stereotypes of people with intellectual disabilities. After a brief exchange with the aliens, Riker assumes they are harmless and decides to send Geordi over to help repair their systems. Naturtally, they hold him hostage in an attempt to extort more tech upgrades from him and the Enterprise. Meanwhile on Starbase 515, Picard's routine surgery goes kattywompus and his only hope is Pulaksi who is lightyears away on the Enterprise. Will Wes pass his exams? Will Geordi get back safely to the Enterprise? Will Riker get that promotion to captain he was ducking two episodes back?
We want to make our ship go to awkward conversations. The Pakleds are the big bad, which is kind of a let down after the Borg honestly. Picard has to get a procedure done (hint: it's not bowel related) and that means he's trapped telling Wesley about his life in a shuttlecraft. Riker and Geordi try to help the cunning Pakleds, but don't listen to some very reasonable warnings from Worf and Troi. Pulaski saves the day after some fine medical babble form our guest stars, while Wesley and Picard bury the hatchet. Jimmie hosts this episode that establishes a whole lot of "Canon!", Kate is concerned about reading in the dark, Erik points out the politics, and Greg just wants to eat sandwiches with the Captain. Aliza Pearl (@alizapearl on Twitter & IG) is an actor, writer, cosplayer and gamer and she joins the cultural bridge crew to talk about one of the gems of the second season of Star Trek: The Next Generation. John DeLancie returns as Q, but now with Guinan aboard we have a whole lot more context for his imp-ery. Whoopi Goldberg serves exposition as expertly as Guinan serves Romulan Ale, and she's the first to utter the name of the most terrifying villains in sci-fi - the Borg. The Borg visit the Enterprise and get blasted by Worf, and Riker visits the Borg cube to meet some very cute babies. In the end it's all about Picard and Q dancing on the stage, but Aliza has some great ideas on how to expand the storyline of Guinan and Q that I certainly hope gets transported to Paramount+ soon. Greg hosts this episode, Jimmie loves these bad guys, Kate digs how Q both lounges and chews on the scenery, Erik waxes poetic on stunt men, and Aliza is a joyful font of insight. We can't wait for her to return! (Kinda like the Borg...) Jack in to the mainframe and defrag your RAMs this week as we come down with "Contagion"!Pete the Retailer of Star Wars Minute and ABCD: TOS returns to the show to discuss an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation that is part of the backbone of early TNG. When the USS Yamato is destroyed by a systems failure, Picard will have to take up the enigmatic search of her late captain. But when eerily similar problems begin affecting the Enterprise, the crew must race against time, the Romulans, and their own technology to escape the Yamato's fate!Everyone knows TNG didn't get "good" until Season 3, but a closer examination of early TNG (specifically Season 2) reveals that the strength in storytelling and characterization that would galvanize the series was already well underway. Solid entries like "Contagion", "Samaritan Snare", and "The Measure of a Man" continued Trek's reputation for satisfying sci-fi fare while the show was still growing into the classic series it would become. On this episode, we discuss the baseline of quality TNG delivers, the prolific output of episode writer Steve Gerber, the persistent echoes of TOS in early TNG, finding the right balance of drama and humor in Trek, building trust with your audience, the technological status quo of the galaxy, the cultural parallels of the infection narrative, and the big ideas that TNG goes after. We also discuss swinging negative on Star Wars, loving "The Rise of Skywalker", the different "Um, actuallys" between Wars and Trek fans, "making love to the alien", explaining computer viruses to Gene Roddenberry, Tea Earl Grey not, Kunta Kinte's dad, backseat producing, 2365 by way of 1989, hot Romulans, "Kirky" Picard, Human Zima, and even MORE *MORE* Starlost talk!Have you tried turning your android off and back on again?Follow Pete on Twitter and check out his website and podcasts!https://twitter.com/PeteTheRetailerhttps://twitter.com/StarWarsMinutehttps://twitter.com/ABCDTOShttp://www.petetheretailer.comLearn the story behind your favorite Trek episodes with BackTrekking!http://www.twitter.com/backtrekkingDebug with us on Facebook and Twitter and the Just Enough Trope Discord!http://www.facebook.com/eistpodhttp://www.twitter.com/eistpodhttps://discord.gg/ATMBeUDBuy us a new android on Patreon and Ko-Fi!http://www.patreon.com/eistpodhttps://ko-fi.com/E1E01M2UASubscribe to the show on iTunes!https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/enterprising-individuals/id1113165661?mt=2

Trek Untold: The Star Trek Podcast That Goes Beyond The Stars!
Lycia Naff is known best to Star Trek fans for her two appearances in "Star Trek: The Next Generation" as Ensign Sonya Gomez from the second season episodes "Q Who" and "Samaritan Snare". Meant to be a love interest for Geordi LaForge, things didn't work out for Ensign Gomez after spilling her hot chocolate on Captain Picard. Lycia tells us the behind-the-scenes story about what happened to her character, and what happened to the third episode she was meant to appear in that would have changed Geordi's character. Plus, memories of seeing the Borg in their debut appearance, working with the cast & crew including having to spill hot liquids on Patrick Stewart, and why she believes Ensign Gomez never returned. You may also recognize Lycia from her role in "Total Recall" as the three-breasted mutant hooker on Mars! Lycia recalls working with Paul Verhoeven and Arnold Schwarzenegger in this iconic and memorable role, with some happy stories and one "explosive" tale. Lycia explains why she left acting and pursued journalism, leading to one of her biggest stories, when she broke news about the Bill Cosby sexual assault allegations. We talk about the investigation, and the fallout from this story, as well as how it changed the landscape of modern feminism. Most important, Lycia has some EXCLUSIVE breaking Star Trek news for us that you will not want to miss! Plus, horror stories of working with Debbie Allen on the "Fame" TV series, sharing the screen with Daryl Hannah in "Clan of The Cave Bear", and riding motorcycles & killing the undead in the B-movie "Chopper Chicks in Zombietown". This week on Priority One --- We trek out Star Trek: Picard’s possible series longevity, Sir Patrick’s history with Star Trek, Mike McMahon’s vision for Lower Decks, and what Simon Pegg knows about the next Trek film - spoiler: it isn’t much! In Star Trek Gaming, Star Trek Online goes to Red Alert, takes on rubberbanding, and Star Trek Timelines announces its newest event! Of course, as always, before we wrap up the show, we’ll open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! This Weeks Community Questions Are: CQ: Do you think Star Trek is better suited for Television, Movies, or is there a place for Trek on both? AND CQ: What’s your Star Trek Online Red Alert of choice? Why? TREK IT OUT by Jake Morgan Akiva Goldsman Talks Picard Delays are an inevitability - even more so now, during the pandemic. But with those delays comes anticipation, and sometimes opportunity. At least that’s what Star Trek Executive Producer and Oscar winning writer Akiva Goldsman thinks. Last week, Goldsman sat down with Collider to discuss Star Trek: Picard season 2, how quarantine has changed the timetable, and how the delays may be a blessing in disguise. Goldsman discussed those inevitable delays we just discussed, telling Collider ”We were to start shooting in June, which I guarantee you we will not unless the world opens tomorrow. We had broken the season, we were about halfway through the writing of it. You know, we will start as soon as we can once the world opens, you know? Prep will have to resume, and then we’ll start. We know what it is, and it’s cool.” In regards to Picard’s early “dark tone”, as well as Covid-19’s silver-lining, Goldsman explained ”I kept saying, ‘They’re reviewing the first act of a movie.’ The first act of a movie is always dark. If you stopped It’s a Wonderful Life at the bridge, it’s a really dark movie! Because fundamentally in a longform narrative, it’s a redemption story, it’s a healing story, it has to be bad at the beginning so it gets good at the end, otherwise there’s nothing to fix. So we’re in this weird world now where we create one narrative object but we dole it out bit by bit, which is fascinating. And can be kind of fun. But what you really want is to be able to refine your setups once you’ve written your payoffs… if in fact you could have the time to write 10 hours first, that would be amazing. And maybe we will.” When asked how many seasons Goldsman foresaw in Picard’s future, he responded ”I mean, I think we have discussed it as both a 3 season show, a 5 season show, a “let’s just keep going forever” show[...]Star Trek: Picard in my view will go as long as Patrick Stewart wants to do it… As I’m sure you know, he was not interested in coming back. And we did a lot of… really good collaborative story breaking and talking and you know and I think he’s particularly delighted in a good way about having come back. And we will rely on that good will until he feels he’s done.” Sir Patrick Lets Loose With CBS This Morning Speaking of Sir Patrick, the “Picard” star had a candid interview with CBS This Morning about his history with Star Trek, Picard, and his daily sonnets. When asked by "CBS This Morning" co-host Tony Dokoupil whether he always aspired to Produce a series, Stewart said ”No. I was too naïve, too new at the game of series television. And I had so much work to do. I mean[...]the first couple of years, I didn't have a life or a social life at all. We'd work a five-day week; 13-, 14-, sometimes 15-hour days, especially towards the end of the week. And Saturday morning, I would allow myself a little sleep in. And then I would do my own laundry, which by the way, I still do. It's an obsession with me.” Stewart was frank about his early days on the TNG set, saying /”I lectured my fellow cast members about some of the fooling around that was going on on the set, and the games that they were playing and the singing and the jokes and the ruining shots. And there was this horrible silence. And it was Denise Crosby who said to me, 'Trick, come on, we gotta have some fun!' And I said, 'We are not here to have fun.' I said that! And that became, you know, a legendary quote, as I progressively got sillier and sillier as the series wore on.” Finally, in regards to Stewart’s charming daily sonnets, Sir Patrick said ”I had no idea what I was saying or what it meant. But there was something in the language” Mike McMahon Tells Us Something About Lower Decks Star Trek’s first animated series since the 70’s is set to air this year, and the buzz is starting to form around the upcoming “Lower Decks”. In the interview from our first story, Akiva Goldsman said ”Lower Decks] literally couldn’t seem funnier to me”. But what does series showrunner and Star Trek super-fan Mike McMahon think? We’re glad you asked! McMahon discussed the series with Slashfilm this week, explaining the premise and structure of the show ”If you’re watching Lower Decks, you’re getting a full Star Trek episode from the perspective of people who are having their own social and emotional stories and their own sci-fi stories, but they just aren’t on the bridge. They don’t have the information the bridge is getting, and they don’t have the responsibility.” McMahon, who was the showrunner on the popular “Rick and Morty”, explained how Lower Decks isn’t a Star Trek skinned version of his previous show ”A big thing that was important to me was figuring out how do we comedically access these characters. How can these characters be funny and not break Star Trek? You can’t have a Morty [from Rick and Morty] in Star Trek. You can’t just have a stupid person in Starfleet, otherwise it breaks the aspirational paradigm of what humanity is like in Starfleet. So our leads are foils for each other, but they’re very much ingrained in Star Trek.” McMahon gave a little flavor to the series main characters, explaining Ensign Beckett Mariner as ”kind of like Captain Kirk if Kirk wasn’t a captain and didn’t have the power. Kirk would follow his gut, and she followers her gut.” and Ensign Brad Boimler as /”so by-the-book and so burdened by following the rules that he can’t follow his gut.” Simon Pegg Tells Us Nothing About Star Trek IV Oh Simon Pegg. How sick you must be of answering questions about Star Trek. But bless your heart - you keep doing it. This week, Collider had the honor of asking Pegg about a possible upcoming movie that he knows very little about. Pegg was asked what he and his castmates knew about an upcoming film, to which he replied ”If [Paramount says], ‘We’d like to do another movie,’ I’m sure we’ll all jump at the chance. I miss those guys, and I love making those films. But I just don’t know. Noah Hawley’s project has been mentioned, and maybe that will happen. I don’t know anything about that. So yeah, I’m as in the dark as everyone else, I’m in the same boat as you guys.” Pegg discussed the more “niche” audience of Trek, when compared to - say - the Marvel Universe, and offered ”the obvious thing to do would be to not go for that massive spectacle, go for something a little bit more restrained in the vein of the original series. Yes, that would be a brilliant thing to do, and I’m sure it probably has been discussed… You specialize a little bit more.” Finally, Pegg may have talked himself out of future Star Trek work, telling Collider ”Maybe TV is a better place for [Star Trek] now. Television has evolved so much. It’s become something which is very much a contemporary, a peer of cinema. It’s simply viewed in a different way. It isn’t a reduced scope anymore. You can still do masses of interesting things, and it can still look modern and not inexpensive. Maybe television is a better format for Star Trek. That’s where it started, you know.” Star Trek Online and Gaming News by Shane Hoover PC: All the Red Alerts All the Red Alerts, all the Red Alerts All the Red Alerts, all the Red Alerts All the Red Alerts, all the Red Alerts All the Red Alerts, now put your shields up If Operation Delta Rising, the Draanuur colony, and the Khitomer-class battlecruiser have taught us anything, it’s the value of collaboration across different cultures towards our common goals. However our less-pleasant galactic neighbors have taken the hint, and are launching a coordinated multi-front offensive across the galaxy. It’s teamwork that makes the existential threat work, I guess. From May 28th at 8 AM Pacific to June 4th at 10 AM Pacific, PC captains will be able to play all five Red Alert Task Force Operations: Borg Red Alert Elachi Red Alert Tholian Red Alert Tzenkethi Red Alert Nakuhl Red Alert Players will receive the normal rewards for each playthrough, and each day’s first completed Red Alert will also grant Daily Event Progress on their account. After receiving five daily progress token players will be able to claim either a Universal Tech Upgrade or Specialization Point grand prize for their account. The grand prize can also be purchased outright on a prorated scale, relative to daily progress made in the event. Players who complete a Red Alert TFO each day after getting the grand prize will receive a dilithium ore bonus, starting at 8,000 and increasing by 1,000 each day. So that there’s no confusion, captains, I want to stress: THERE. ARE. FIVE. ALERTS. Console: Eyyyy, La Sirena From June 2nd at 8 AM Pacific to June 23rd at 10 Pacific, captains on console will have another crack at simultaneous Infinity R&D and Duty Officer Promotions. As usual, during the promotion R&D Packs and Duty Officer Packs purchased from the C-Store and opened will grant either an additional 10 Lobi Crystals or a Special Requisition Choice Pack - Tier 6 Promotional Ship Choice Pack. And this time a new ship is making its console debut in the Ship Choice Pack—the contentiously-named La Sirena T6 Heavy Raider, as seen in Star Trek: Picard. Console: To Hell With Honor Also coming to consoles, from June 2nd through June 23rd, players can assault J’Ula’s moon based shipyards in the “To Hell With Honor” Featured TFO Event. Just like it was on PC, this is a unique TFO featuring space combat over a moon surface map. Destroy J’Ula’s ships before they can join her fleet, and deal with unexpected guests provoked by J’Ula’s Mycelial weapon technology. This featured TFO is part two of the four part Event Campaign on consoles, with each day’s completion rewarding 50 Event Campaign progress points. To see the event rewards, like the DOT-7 Drones last seen on Short Treks, follow the link to STO’s blog in our show notes. Rubberbanding Survey Picture this: you’re tearing across the Park in the Dyson Ground Battlezone like, or because, there won’t be a tomorrow. The Voth are almost done collecting Omega particles, and you’re the only one who can stop them. The V-Rex is in sight, you ready your Orbital Strike—and suddenly you’re 50 meters away, running over the same patch of grass again. And again. And again. And scene. You, mon capitan, have been rubberbanded. Player complaints about lagging in MMOs are as old as MMOs themselves. However Star Trek Online has *allegedly* been more badly-affected than usual recently. On Monday the 25th, the official Star Trek Online Twitter account shared a link to a SurveyMonkey poll, asking players to describe their recent experiences. The poll includes your general geographic location, proxy usage, ISP, and in-game locations you find particularly troublesome. Link in the show notes. PRIORITY ONE ARMADA NEWS Join us for TFO Thursday - each Thursday we team up with other Armada members to earn marks and dilithium. Epsilon Fleet - another Tier V upgrade almost ready to go on cooldown. OTHER GAMING NEWS Star Trek Timelines Events From Thursday May 28 at noon ET to June 1 at noon ET, Star Trek Timelines will feature the Blundering Terror Galaxy Event for the Federation, Ferengi Alliance, and Borg factions. No details for the event narrative have been released but we do have the following key details. The 4-star Professor Scott--Great Scott! [throw toilet paper roll]--will be returning as a featured crew member, joined by the new 5-star crew member Determined Paris and 4-star Grebnedlog. Grebnedlog, for those whose rubber bands may be broken, is the captain of the Pakled ship in the TNG episode "Samaritan Snare." As always, event crew members grant the highest bonuses. However variants of Tom Paris, Montgomery Scott, and crew members with the Thief trait will also make you strong and make your Faction go. The winning Faction may not attain the 24th level of awareness, but they will receive a new 5-star Kira-variant crew member. 20th century science fiction author Kay Eaton, seen in the DS9 episode "Far Beyond the Stars," will be a featured crew member in the next event starting on 06/04.

And we will rely on that good will until he feels he's done.” Sir Patrick Lets Loose With CBS This Morning Speaking of Sir Patrick, the “Picard” star had a candid interview with CBS This Morning about his history with Star Trek, Picard, and his daily sonnets. And that became, you know, a legendary quote, as I progressively got sillier and sillier as the series wore on.” Finally, in regards to Stewart's charming daily sonnets, Sir Patrick said ”I had no idea what I was saying or what it meant. But there was something in the language” Mike McMahon Tells Us Something About Lower Decks Star Trek's first animated series since the 70's is set to air this year, and the buzz is starting to form around the upcoming “Lower Decks”. In the interview from our first story, Akiva Goldsman said ”Lower Decks] literally couldn't seem funnier to me”. But what does series showrunner and Star Trek super-fan Mike McMahon think? We're glad you asked! McMahon discussed the series with Slashfilm this week, explaining the premise and structure of the show ”If you're watching Lower Decks, you're getting a full Star Trek episode from the perspective of people who are having their own social and emotional stories and their own sci-fi stories, but they just aren't on the bridge. They don't have the information the bridge is getting, and they don't have the responsibility.” McMahon, who was the showrunner on the popular “Rick and Morty”, explained how Lower Decks isn't a Star Trek skinned version of his previous show ”A big thing that was important to me was figuring out how do we comedically access these characters. How can these characters be funny and not break Star Trek? You can't have a Morty [from Rick and Morty] in Star Trek. You can't just have a stupid person in Starfleet, otherwise it breaks the aspirational paradigm of what humanity is like in Starfleet. So our leads are foils for each other, but they're very much ingrained in Star Trek.” McMahon gave a little flavor to the series main characters, explaining Ensign Beckett Mariner as ”kind of like Captain Kirk if Kirk wasn't a captain and didn't have the power. Kirk would follow his gut, and she followers her gut.” and Ensign Brad Boimler as /”so by-the-book and so burdened by following the rules that he can't follow his gut.” Simon Pegg Tells Us Nothing About Star Trek IV Oh Simon Pegg. How sick you must be of answering questions about Star Trek. But bless your heart - you keep doing it. This week, Collider had the honor of asking Pegg about a possible upcoming movie that he knows very little about. Pegg was asked what he and his castmates knew about an upcoming film, to which he replied ”If [Paramount says], ‘We'd like to do another movie,' I'm sure we'll all jump at the chance. I miss those guys, and I love making those films. But I just don't know. Noah Hawley's project has been mentioned, and maybe that will happen. I don't know anything about that. So yeah, I'm as in the dark as everyone else, I'm in the same boat as you guys.” Pegg discussed the more “niche” audience of Trek, when compared to - say - the Marvel Universe, and offered ”the obvious thing to do would be to not go for that massive spectacle, go for something a little bit more restrained in the vein of the original series. Yes, that would be a brilliant thing to do, and I'm sure it probably has been discussed… You specialize a little bit more.” Finally, Pegg may have talked himself out of future Star Trek work, telling Collider ”Maybe TV is a better place for [Star Trek] now. Television has evolved so much. It's become something which is very much a contemporary, a peer of cinema. It's simply viewed in a different way. It isn't a reduced scope anymore. You can still do masses of interesting things, and it can still look modern and not inexpensive. Maybe television is a better format for Star Trek. That's where it started, you know.” Star Trek Online and Gaming News by Shane Hoover PC: All the Red Alerts All the Red Alerts, all the Red Alerts All the Red Alerts, all the Red Alerts All the Red Alerts, all the Red Alerts All the Red Alerts, now put your shields up If Operation Delta Rising, the Draanuur colony, and the Khitomer-class battlecruiser have taught us anything, it's the value of collaboration across different cultures towards our common goals. However our less-pleasant galactic neighbors have taken the hint, and are launching a coordinated multi-front offensive across the galaxy. It's teamwork that makes the existential threat work, I guess. From May 28th at 8 AM Pacific to June 4th at 10 AM Pacific, PC captains will be able to play all five Red Alert Task Force Operations: Borg Red Alert Elachi Red Alert Tholian Red Alert Tzenkethi Red Alert Nakuhl Red Alert Players will receive the normal rewards for each playthrough, and each day's first completed Red Alert will also grant Daily Event Progress on their account. So that there's no confusion, captains, I want to stress: THERE. ARE. FIVE. Console: To Hell With Honor Also coming to consoles, from June 2nd through June 23rd, players can assault J'Ula's moon based shipyards in the “To Hell With Honor” Featured TFO Event. Just like it was on PC, this is a unique TFO featuring space combat over a moon surface map. Destroy J'Ula's ships before they can join her fleet, and deal with unexpected guests provoked by J'Ula's Mycelial weapon technology. This featured TFO is part two of the four part Event Campaign on consoles, with each day's completion rewarding 50 Event Campaign progress points. To see the event rewards, like the DOT-7 Drones last seen on Short Treks, follow the link to STO's blog in our show notes. Rubberbanding Survey Picture this: you're tearing across the Park in the Dyson Ground Battlezone like, or because, there won't be a tomorrow. The Voth are almost done collecting Omega particles, and you're the only one who can stop them. The V-Rex is in sight, you ready your Orbital Strike—and suddenly you're 50 meters away, running over the same patch of grass again. And again. And again.

Star Trek TNG S2E17 Samaritan Snare
There have been good episodes of TNG up until now. But I strongly feel like The Defector is our first Hot Damn episode of TNG. It's not ‘every frame a painting' good, but it's a lean 45 minutes of television and it's gripping. There's no personal tsuris about–I don't know–Troi grappling with drug use or Crusher having trouble at home. There's no lagniappe drama; there's no small, personal bullshit or character arc that Jarok's mission folds neatly into. Again, I kinda freewheel about what I'm going to call “VanVelding's Starfleet TOE,” which I think I hit on just enough to quiet the voices. I'm not going crazy when I expect the Enterprise to have a home port and to be assigned to the command of an admiral, right? The book that Derek is referring to is the one, I think, Picard and Wesley talked about in “Samaritan Snare.” It included the work of American philosopher William James.
We continue our "Discussing the Best of Picard" series as we discuss the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode, "Samaritan Snare". Picard's pride gets the best of him, as he accompanies Wesley to Starbase 515 to get surgery for a heart condition. Meanwhile Commander Riker and crew play good Samaritan, only to find a crew member has been held hostage. Join in on the fun, as we give yet another Picard-focused episode the deep dive!

Man, this is a great episode about Picard and Wesley and NOTHING ELSE. My experiences with handed-down wisdom probably aren't singular, but they aren't universal either. Ah, being Southern. *Sigh* Will Riker continues being a bit disappointing. He's getting offered commands left and right and episodes like this make him seem not ready at all for them. Not at all. I wonder if there's another Will Riker around that they keep recommending for commands and the offers keep ending up in this Will Riker's mailbox or something. I don't know if it's conceited that I want “I live an alternative lifestyle of austere bachelorhood” on a t-shirt.
The fact the writers decided to make fun of the differently abled really hurt Riker's street cred. But you know what we can joke about, Space Herpes! Patrick and Sascha think that Picard has space herpes, listen along as they figure this one out.
The gang gets duped by tangentical plot lines in "Samaritan Snare!" We're shocked by Wesley's subterfuge, finally agree with Worf, and think Picard needs his butt juiced. Rob tracks a sandwich, Marcy is tired of space dildos, and Cameron goes on a tuk-tuk ride. Plus a hilarious game of "How Low (IQ) Can You Go?" Engage!

It's kind of abelist and pretty anti-Irish, it's this week's episodes of “Star Trek: The Next Generation”! First up: the Pakleds are technology thieves that stymie Riker and kidnap Geordie while Picard is off getting his ticker serviced in “Samaritan Snare”. After that, come play Irish stereotype bingo and revel in a horrible conclusion in “Up the Long Ladder.” Also this week: shuttle design griping, cloning conundrums, and a postcredit that is basically all toilets and poop, so you can't say we didn't warn you. Hey, sometimes Mad Men forgets how to do subtle. The fifth season finale, "The Phantom," is definitely one of those times, with its hyperobvious symbolism and to-the-audience speeches. Elsewhere, the second season of Star Trek: The Next Generation has an eclectic mix of episodes, as we watch "Q Who," "Samaritan Snare," and "Up the Long Ladder." From the Borg to the Space Irish -- it's the whole spectrum on this show, idn't it?

Hardcore Trek nerds, this is the episode for you! We’re talking about some stone-cold Trek classics, such as Skin of Evil and Samaritan Snare from TNG and Voyager’s SERIES FINALE, Endgame! Tapestry Commentary. The Next Generation often reached back to its early seasons to develop later stories, from the season one episode "Datalore" leading to season five's "Silicon Avatar" and season one's "The Battle" continuing all the way to season seven's "Bloodlines." In season six, an entire episode was devoted to a single story Captain Jean-Luc Picard shared with a young Wesley Crusher in the season two episode "Samaritan Snare." In "Tapestry," Q appears to a surprised Picard who has "died" due to his artificial heart, and allows Jean-Luc to "Back to the Future" to his young, wild, and wreckless past. Daniel, Darren, and Phillip provide commentary for this episode, debating the reality of Picard's experience, how they wished Nausicaans made more appearance throughout Trek, and how the evolution of Starfleet uniforms fit into the in-universe timeline. Hey Trekabout listeners! Were you chomping at the bit to see an episode of TNG in which every single character acts as stupid as possible? Well, “Samaritan Snare” delivers! Later, in “Up the Long Ladder”, we learn that Irish alcoholism is, in the 24th Century, still a very real stereotype. Plus! It was a good ...
Suzanne opens this episode with some brief gushing over Chris Hemsworth in Ron Howard’s Rush, a film she and Bob both recommend this year along with Dallas Buyers Club. After mentioning the ongoing Hollywood-Santa Barbara connection—with a nod to the Santa Barbara International Film Festival soon coming to their neighborhood—Bob admits that he may not have been the “perfect fit” as writer-producer on Star Trek: The Next Generation. Bob confesses his frustration with the “downward spiral of politics” among the show’s executives and producers, and reveals his ironic point of view about writing for one of television’s cultural holy grails. With a focus on the show’s characters and storylines, Bob’s year as a writer-producer was colored by his irreverent take on all things technical...to the point that he wrote Samaritan Snare, an episode featuring an alien culture that was the antithesis of The Star Fleet. Giving a couple of dialogue quotes from the episode, Bob points to an old grammar school joke he employed in the script, and admits to simply “having some fun” among all the behind-the-scenes drama on the Paramount Studios lot. Suzanne then points out the remarkable connection between I Love Lucy and the original Star Trek, following that up with the announcement of Bob’s recent award from the Writers Guild for having been named for “outstanding television writing” on the show...and a moment later teases Bob with “where’s the money?”
