At this point,we haven't done very many podcast episodes. 2019 was definitely slower in that department. But, we did start a new radio show broadcasted from WCSF 88.7fm out of The University of Saint Francis. It's caleed the Local Music Bonanza. We exclusively feature musicians that are not signed to a major label. Most of the bands are from Joliet, many of which have been interviewed on our podcast. We have also teamed up with The Joliet Public Library to start doing a whole new series on some of the history of Joliet. I cannot wait to dig into some of the rare artifacts and memorabilia the Library has to offer. David Manchen is the frontman for A Dozen Paces. These guys play at The Drunken Doughnut quite a bit. You'll find them all over the area as well. I'd say the Doughnut is thier home court. David has been doing his part in keeping this vast music scene going by putting together Spotify and You Tube playlists of all of the areas artists. He had great performances during his interview. I think we'll be hearing alot from David in the years to come. Christian and Austin try to make sense of the first quadruple overtime since 1953 as the Blazers grab game 3 of the Western Conference Semifinals. Rodney Hood makes a couple clutch baskets in the 4th OT, CJ goes the distance, and Jokic is exhausted. It is said that 74% of game 3 winners go on to win the series in the history of the NBA playoffs. Will the 2018-19 Trail Blazers be visiting the Western Conference Finals? It's What's Goin' Down In Downtown J-Town's second anniversary. On February 23, 2017 our first episode was released on Facebook featuring Riverhorse. Since then we've also become a community events page on Twitter and Instagram. We also have begun a radio show called The What's Goin' Down In Downtown J-Town's Local Music Bonanza on WCSF 88.7 from The University of Saint Francis. We play music from unsigned musical artists from Joliet as well as band from all over the country that have played in Joliet. We record our show live at Third City Sound on the third floor above Chicago Street Pub. The Pub was what remained a community hub in a dismal Joliet for years. It's finally starting to pay off as this great city is waking up once again. Our goal is to keep you as informed about it as possible in real time. Ava Suppelsa has played in and around Joliet for a bit. You've seen her at The Pub. She's been at the Tim Placher Shindig at the Shanty. This coming Monday February 25th, 2019 she'll be opening the year's first Local Music Monday at the Rialto Square Theater. Ava has become a Nashville songwriter with great success penning songs for other performers. We were more than happy that she agreed, and had time, to give us an interview. Within our standard two songs per artist, she was cool enough to give us an impromptu performance of a song she wrote for herself. She's also gonna be playing at John Condron's Hot Seat Concert Series at Tribe's Ale House Sunday February 24th, 2019. We enjoyed our time with Ava...you will, too. On this weeks episode we will be discussing our community of collaboration and how it isn't a competition. You're benefiting the community by collaborating and not being cutthroat. Instead you're able to share secrets and better the whole industry as a result. By collaborating with the community, you sharpen the industry as a whole.Carrie will be talking on collaboration at WCSF after having been burned by someone in the community that wasn't even technically her competition. This has lead to some very educational blog posts on her website. Check them out carriedils.comSo why is the WordPress community so open to collaboration as opposed to the tech community in general?* It could be due to WordPress's open source nature.* It's a lot more common in open source communities to share things rather than hold on to it and not give it away.* WP is so popular there are loads of meet ups and so everyone is always out there helping each other.* Without the Foundation maintaining the hard line to ensure it remains open source, it would probably become competitive and capitalistic.* The focus isn't just on the open source software but on the openness of the community. There isn't much kept secret. Anyone can jump right in and get involved and find the support they need.Competition is motivation. On the other hand, competition doesn't have to be the bad guy. It drives innovation. It's only when you're looking at what someone else is doing that you can say I think we can do this better. The key is to figure out how to collaborate and compete. The WP community “iterates.” They see something someone has done and want to make it better.“Co-Opetition” – WP isn't really one or the other. It's a merging of both mindsets. It's good to be first, but it's better to be best. You only get out of the community what you put into the community. If you share what you know, you will get other people's knowledge in return. If a meetup is run with competition in mind, it will likely fail. When your motivation is to share, chances are good that it will be a success.Without building a community, you have no one to collaborate with. If you build the community in your local area, it will absolutely pay off. WordCamps plant the seed for local meetups to be started. In the WP community, if you aren't someone that's willing to share and collaborate, eventually people will eventually begin to shun you. People won't respect that in a community built on open source. This episode is sponsored by WP101http://www.wp101.comMentions:http://wpdaily.cohttp://2013.sf.wordcamp.org/[LISTATTENDEES event_identifier=”ep41-community-of-collaboration-not-competition-july-1-2013-5-51d10c3278385″ show_gravatar=”true”] See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
