What does a change in U.S. presidential administrations have to do with stalled solar farms in Sub-Saharan Africa or wind projects in Southeast Asia? As it turns out, quite a lot. On this episode of Power Perspectives, we explore how U.S. policy shifts are sending ripples through the global financial system—impacting everything from renewable investments in developing countries to grid upgrades on Main Street USA. We're joined by Gautam Jain, Senior Research Scholar at Columbia University's Center on Global Energy Policy and Adjunct Professor at SIPA, to dig into the high-stakes intersection of climate finance, currency risk, and energy geopolitics. Gautam walks us through why the international green finance system is under pressure as the U.S. government scales back funding commitments under the Trump administration. With global investors growing increasingly wary of geopolitical instability, what's next for the energy transition? And how should utility leaders, policymakers, and financial stakeholders respond? Note: The news in this space is moving fast, so to set context this conversation was recorded on April 4. The Ag Net News Hour's Lorre Boyer and Nick Papagni, “The AgMeter” discussed the challenges faced by citrus growers, particularly the management of citrus thrips. Sandipa Gautam, a Cooperative Extension Area Citrus IPM Advisor, highlighted the importance of monitoring fields for thrips and other pests, such as red mites and California red scale. She noted that thrips thrive in drought-stressed environments and have developed resistance to some insecticides. Gautam emphasized the need for effective and safe pest management strategies, especially during the bloom season. The segment also touched on the broader impact of labor issues on farmers and the importance of agriculture in providing food and clothing. The discussion on Ag Net News Hour focused on a federal judge's ruling that the Trump administration cannot freeze funds allocated under the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) by the Biden administration. Judge Mary S. McElroy, appointed by Trump, ruled that agencies cannot unilaterally alter funding granted by Congress. The ruling affects departments like USDA, EPA, and HUD, and orders them to release frozen funds. The conversation debated the legality of Trump's actions, with one speaker arguing for transparency and the other for adherence to legal processes. The impact on farmers and the farming industry was also discussed. The Ag Net News Hour discussed California's lawsuit against President Trump's use of emergency powers to impose tariffs on Mexico, China, and Canada. Governor Gavin Newsom and Attorney General Rob Bonta argue that Trump lacks authority under the International Economic Emergency Powers Act to impose these tariffs, which they claim harm California's economy. They discussed the history of Newsom's financial mismanagement, citing a $961 million budget overrun for homeless programs and the failure of the high-speed train project. Pagani predicted Newsom's lawsuit would fail, highlighting his lack of support and the vagueness of the 1977 law.

The Truth About Oxalates: Is Your Diet Hurting Your Kidneys and Gut Health?

The Darin Olien Show

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 20, 2025 22:25

Are oxalates actually harming your health, or is this another nutrition myth? In this episode of Super Life, Darin Olien breaks down the real science behind oxalates, their connection to kidney stones, mineral absorption, and gut health, and whether you really need to avoid high-oxalate foods. There's a lot of fear-mongering around oxalates, but what does the latest research say? Should you stop eating spinach, beets, or almonds? What about meat's impact on kidney function? Darin pulls from peer-reviewed studies to cut through the noise and give you the facts so you can make the best choices for your health. If you've ever wondered whether oxalates are a real concern or just clickbait, this episode is a must-listen.     Segment 1: What Are Oxalates? Friend or Foe? Oxalates, or oxalic acid, are naturally occurring compounds found in many plant-based foods. They serve as a defense mechanism for plants but can sometimes bind with minerals like calcium and iron in the body, potentially forming kidney stones or reducing nutrient absorption.  Here's the key question: Are oxalates dangerous, or is this another health myth blown out of proportion?   Here's what the research says:  For most people, oxalates are NOT a problem. Your body naturally processes and eliminates excess oxalates through urine.  For those prone to kidney stones, particularly calcium oxalate stones (which make up about 80% of all kidney stones), consuming too many high-oxalate foods can increase the risk.  Oxalates can interfere with calcium and iron absorption, but this is only a concern for people with nutrient deficiencies.   Key takeaway: If your kidneys are healthy, your body handles oxalates just fine. But if you've had kidney stones before, you might want to pay closer attention to your oxalate intake.      Segment 2: What Does the Science Say About Oxalates?  To cut through the noise, I pulled up the latest research from 2024 and 2025. Here's what's new:    1. Gut Microbiota Can Help Protect Against Oxalates  A  2025 study in Frontiers in Nutrition found that certain gut bacteria (like Oxalobacter formigenes) actually digest oxalates, helping prevent kidney stones.  Takeaway: If you're worried about oxalates, supporting your gut microbiome with probiotics might be a natural way to reduce their impact.  Link: Read Study Here   "The presence of oxalate-degrading bacteria in the gut can significantly lower oxalate absorption and reduce kidney stone risk." – Dr. L. Wang, NHANES Study    2. Vitamin C Supplements & Oxalate Formation  Some people worry that high-dose vitamin C supplements convert into oxalates, increasing kidney stone risk.  A 2025 study in Nutrients found no significant increase in urinary oxalates from vitamin C intake.  Takeaway: If you take vitamin C in moderation, you don't have to worry about it increasing oxalates.  Link: Read Study Here "Contrary to popular belief, moderate vitamin C supplementation does not significantly raise oxalate levels in urine." – Dr. P.C. Calder, Nutrients Journal    3. Cooking & Fermentation Can Reduce Oxalates  A 2024 study on fermentation & nutrient bioavailability found that cooking reduces oxalate levels by up to 60%.  Best methods? Boiling, steaming, and fermentation lower oxalates significantly.  Takeaway: If you love spinach but worry about oxalates, just boil it first!  Link: Read Study Here      Segment 3: What About Meat? Does It Increase Kidney Stone Risk? Now, here's something you might not expect. We talk a lot about oxalates and plant-based foods, but what about meat? Could eating too much meat actually contribute to kidney stones? The research says YES—but not because of oxalates. Instead, the mechanism is uric acid and metabolic acidity. Let's break it down.   1. Red Meat & Uric Acid Stones  A 2024 study in Nature Reviews Urology found that high animal protein intake increases uric acid, which contributes to kidney stones.  Excess meat consumption makes urine more acidic, making it easier for stones to form.  Link: Read Study Here "High animal protein intake, while providing essential amino acids, also contributes to increased acid load and uric acid production, both of which are risk factors for kidney stone development." – Dr. S. Loeb, Nature Reviews Urology     2. Meat Increases Metabolic Acidity  A 2025 study from Frontiers in Endocrinology found that excessive meat consumption leads to increased acid load, calcium loss, and kidney dysfunction.  This makes it harder for the kidneys to filter out waste properly.  Link: Read Study Here "While meat consumption is essential for many, excessive intake can disrupt mineral ion homeostasis, increasing the risk of kidney stone disease." – Dr. R. Ahmad, Frontiers in Endocrinology     Segment 4: Foods High & Low in Oxalates Knowing which foods to eat or limit is key.   High-Oxalate Foods (If You're at Risk)  Spinach, Swiss chard, beet greens  Beets, rhubarb, sweet potatoes  Almonds, peanuts, cashews  Blackberries, kiwi, figs  Black tea, cocoa, coffee    Low-Oxalate Foods (Safer Choices)  Kale, mustard greens, cabbage  Cauliflower, cucumbers, zucchini  Apples, bananas, melons, grapes  Milk, yogurt (binds with oxalates)  Eggs, fish, chicken, beef (in moderation)     Segment 5: Actionable Steps to Manage Oxalate & Meat Intake If you're concerned about oxalates or meat-related kidney stones, here's what to do:   Balance Oxalates with Calcium  Eat calcium-rich foods with oxalates to prevent them from forming stones. Cook Your Vegetables  Boiling, steaming, and fermenting reduce oxalates by up to 60%!  Drink Plenty of Water  Staying hydrated flushes out excess oxalates & uric acid.  Don't Overdo Meat Consumption  Limit red meat intake and balance with alkaline foods like vegetables & fruit.  Probiotics for Gut Health  Consider probiotic-rich foods like yogurt and kimchi to help break down oxalates.     Final Thoughts So, should you avoid oxalates? Should you stop eating meat? Not necessarily. The real key is BALANCE. Most people don't need to avoid oxalates entirely, and meat is fine in moderation—as long as you balance it with hydration, alkaline foods, and a gut-friendly diet.     What You'll Learn in This Episode: (00:00:00) Introduction – What are oxalates, and why is everyone talking about them? Send us a textDr. Uma Gautam's remarkable journey from dentistry to entrepreneurship embodies this year's Women's Day theme: "Accelerate Action." When faced with the challenge of balancing motherhood with career ambitions, Uma didn't wait for perfect circumstances—she created them by founding an all-women recruitment team that has thrived for 14 years. Her entrepreneurial path wasn't without obstacles. Starting as a "one-woman army" working from home, Uma gradually built her business through word-of-mouth referrals and unwavering resilience. Rather than viewing setbacks as reasons to quit, she interpreted them as opportunities to adapt and learn—a mindset instilled by her parents and reinforced through experience. The conversation reveals Uma's eight entrepreneurial mantras, including embracing uncertainty with courage, building resilience as a "mental muscle," and surrounding yourself with the right mentors. As she powerfully states, "An entrepreneur can never become singularly successful." Her emphasis on financial discipline addresses why many startups fail: not because of bad ideas, but because they run out of money before gaining traction.Beyond recruitment, Uma has flourished as a TV anchor and speaker, recently delivering a TEDx talk that garnered 50,000 views in just two months. Her approach to these high-visibility roles prioritizes authenticity over perfection, creating genuine connections with audiences through vulnerability and presence. This philosophy aligns with her leadership definition through the "three I's": influence, inspire, and impact. For those considering career transitions, Uma offers profound advice: focus on the "why" behind potential moves, not just the "what" of titles and compensation. This deeper questioning reveals alignment between personal values and organizational culture—the foundation for lasting professional satisfaction. Her parting wisdom? "The world moves only for those who ask." Trust yourself, take action, and watch as possibilities unfold.Have you purchased the copy of Inspire Someone Today, yet - Give it a go geni.us/istbook Available on all podcast platforms, including, Apple Podcasts, YouTube, Spotify

Welcome back to PING, at the start of 2025. In this episode, Gautam Akiwate, (now with Apple, but at the time of recording with Stanford University) talks about the 2021 Advanced Network Research Prize winning paper, co-authored with Stefan Savage, Geoffrey Voelker and Kimberly Claffy which was titled "Risky BIZness: Risks Derived from Registrar Name Management". The paper explores a situation which emerged inside the supply chain behind DNS name delegation, in the use of an IETF protocol called Extensible Provisioning Protocol or EPP. EPP is implemented in XML over the SOAP mechanism, and is how registry-registrar communications take place, on behalf of a given domain name holder (the delegate) to record which DNS nameservers have the authority to publish the delegated zone. The problem doesn't lie in the DNS itself, but in the operational practices which emerged in some registrars, to remove dangling dependencies in the systems when domain names were de-registered. In effect they used an EPP feature to rename the dependency, so they could move on with selling the domain name to somebody else. The problem is that feature created valid names, which could themselves then be purchased. For some number of DNS consumers, those new valid nameservers would then be permitted to serve the domain, and enable attacks on the integrity of the DNS and the web. Gautam and his co-authors explored a very interesting quirk of the back end systems and in the process helped improve the security of the DNS and identified weaknesses in a long-standing "daily dump" process to provide audit and historical data.

This is the Catchup on 3 Things by The Indian Express and I'm Flora Swain.Today is the 27th of November and here are the headlines.Parliamentary ProtestsThe proceedings in both Houses of Parliament were adjourned after Opposition MPs raised slogans demanding discussions on issues like the Adani bribery case, Sambhal violence, and rising crime in Delhi. In the Rajya Sabha, Chairman Jagdeep Dhankar rejected 18 notices for a joint parliamentary probe into the Adani bribery charges and other matters. As protests escalated, MPs began shouting slogans, leading to the adjournment. Meanwhile, a parliamentary committee on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill will meet today to review suggestions, but Opposition members are asking for more time to finish their work.Adani Group's ClarificationAdani Green Energy (AGEL) clarified that neither Chairman Gautam Adani, his nephew Sagar Adani, nor Managing Director Vneet Jaain have been charged under the US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA). The statement comes after reports suggested charges against the trio. Senior lawyer Mukul Rohatgi also confirmed that neither Gautam nor Sagar Adani face charges in the serious counts of the US prosecutors' five-count indictment. AGEL's clarification aims to clear any confusion about the involvement of its top executives in alleged violations.Delhi Air Quality UpdateDelhi's air quality remains in the “very poor” category with an AQI of 301, improving slightly from Monday's 392. Areas like Mundka and Bawana recorded the worst levels. Due to the pollution, schools in Delhi switched to a hybrid model with both in-person and online classes, as mandated by the Supreme Court. The temperature dipped to 11.6°C, and visibility at the airport was reduced to 1,600 meters. Authorities have forecast a mainly clear day ahead, though pollution concerns persist.Lebanon-Israel CeasefireA ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon took effect, following an agreement brokered by the US and France. Hamas expressed support for Lebanon's efforts to protect its people and hopes for a broader deal to end the Gaza war. While international peace efforts remain stalled, Lebanon's military is preparing to deploy in the south to help maintain the ceasefire, urging residents near the border to stay away until the Israeli military retreats. This marks a tentative step toward reducing tensions in the region.Pakistan Protest UpdatePakistan's Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, led by former PM Imran Khan's wife Bushra Bibi, called off a planned sit-in protest in Islamabad. The decision came after violent clashes between security forces and protesters. The PTI had attempted to march towards the D-Chowk, but security forces used tear gas to disperse them. PTI leaders, including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa CM Ali Amin Gandapur, urged protesters to return home, citing a temporary pause in the movement. This was the Catch Up on 3 Things by The Indian Express.

This Day in Legal History: Gong Lum v. RiceOn November 21, 1927, the U.S. Supreme Court issued its decision in Gong Lum v. Rice, a landmark case concerning racial segregation in public education. The case arose when Martha Lum, a nine-year-old Chinese American girl, was denied entry to a school for white children in Mississippi. Local authorities directed her to attend a school designated for Black students under the state's racially segregated education system. Her father, Gong Lum, challenged the decision, arguing that such segregation violated the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. The Supreme Court, however, ruled unanimously that Mississippi's actions were constitutional. It extended the "separate but equal" doctrine established in Plessy v. Ferguson (1896) to include Asian Americans, thereby reinforcing the legality of segregated schools. The Court maintained that states had the authority to classify students by race and assign them to separate schools, as long as the facilities were deemed equal. This decision effectively placed Chinese Americans and other non-White groups under the same discriminatory segregation laws applied to African Americans in the Jim Crow South. The ruling was a significant blow to the Lum family and a stark reminder of the pervasive racial hierarchies embedded in U.S. law at the time. It also illustrated how the "separate but equal" doctrine legitimized widespread exclusion and inequality, beyond Black and White racial dynamics. The precedent set by Gong Lum v. Rice remained unchallenged for decades, contributing to the entrenchment of racially segregated education across the United States. This decision underscored the systemic nature of racial discrimination in early 20th-century America. It wasn't until Brown v. Board of Education in 1954 that the Supreme Court overruled the doctrine of "separate but equal," marking a pivotal shift toward dismantling segregation in public education. Gong Lum v. Rice remains a critical case in the history of American civil rights law, reflecting the broader struggles of minority groups against institutionalized racism. The latest round of year-end bonuses at major law firms reflects a cautious approach to associate compensation as firms prioritize protecting partner profits amid rising revenues. Milbank LLP initiated the bonus announcements, offering payments up to $140,000, including special bonuses introduced earlier in the year. At least five firms have matched Milbank's bonus structure, with others expected to follow. However, the stagnant bonus scale, unchanged since 2021, indicates a broader effort to manage costs while maintaining profitability. This year, firms are separating special bonuses from regular ones to avoid setting new precedents for higher compensation scales. Recruiters note that Milbank's early announcements help attract associate attention, a valuable branding strategy. The firm's financial success, with $1.5 billion in gross revenue and over $5.1 million in profits per equity partner last year, underscores its robust position, even as it faces some high-profile departures and lateral hires.Despite the cautious bonus adjustments, top law firms are thriving. A Wells Fargo survey revealed a 15% revenue increase and a 25% net income rise among the 50 largest firms, driven by higher demand, productivity, and billing rates. Still, associate productivity has only slightly improved from record lows, and firms are increasingly focusing on partner-level recruitment to sustain profitability. Traditional leaders like Cravath remain influential in finalizing bonus decisions, reinforcing long-standing industry customs.Big Law Hedges Associate Bonuses to Protect Partner ProfitsIndian billionaire Gautam Adani has been charged by U.S. prosecutors in a $265 million bribery scheme involving payments to Indian officials to secure power contracts and develop India's largest solar power project. The indictment, which includes securities fraud and conspiracy charges, also implicates Adani's nephew, Sagar Adani, and former Adani Green Energy CEO Vneet Jaain. The scheme allegedly defrauded American investors by concealing corruption in financial materials for bond offerings, including one that raised $750 million in 2021.The U.S. has issued arrest warrants for Gautam and Sagar Adani, intending to involve foreign authorities under an extradition treaty with India. Adani's conglomerate, already under scrutiny after a critical report by Hindenburg Research in 2023, saw its market value plunge by $20 billion following the indictment. Adani Green Energy canceled a $600 million bond sale, and shares of Adani-related firms dropped sharply.Indian regulators, including SEBI, have yet to comment on the U.S. charges, while opposition parties in India demand further investigations into the group. The Adani Group denies the allegations and plans to challenge the charges, but the scandal has intensified scrutiny over the company's operations and political connections.Indian tycoon Gautam Adani charged in US over $265 million bribery scheme | ReutersThe U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has proposed sweeping measures to address what it calls Google's illegal monopoly in online search and related advertising. Prosecutors argue that Google must divest its Chrome browser, share search data with competitors, and potentially sell its Android operating system to restore competition. The proposals aim to dismantle Google's dominant market position, as it processes 90% of U.S. searches.Other recommendations include banning Google from exclusive agreements with device makers like Apple, ending its preference for its search engine on Chrome and Android, and restricting acquisitions of search rivals or AI products. A five-member technical committee would oversee compliance for up to a decade, with powers to review documents, interview staff, and inspect software code.Chrome and Android are central to Google's business, as they collect user data crucial for targeted advertising. Prosecutors claim these platforms unfairly entrench Google's dominance by limiting rivals' market access. The DOJ also proposes mandatory licensing of search results to competitors at low cost and unrestricted data-sharing unless privacy laws prevent it. Google opposes the measures, calling them government overreach that would harm consumers and innovation. A trial is scheduled for April 2025, during which Google can present alternative proposals. These measures could reshape the digital landscape and are being closely watched by competitors like DuckDuckGo, which supports the DOJ's initiatives.Google must divest Chrome to restore competition in online search, DOJ says | ReutersThe U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) has finalized a rule to regulate major technology firms like Apple Inc. that offer digital wallets and payment apps. Companies processing more than 50 million U.S.-dollar transactions annually will now face oversight similar to banks. This rule significantly raises the initial threshold of 5 million transactions proposed last year. It empowers the CFPB to supervise these firms regularly, not just when legal violations occur, as digital payments become increasingly essential to consumers.CFPB Director Rohit Chopra emphasized that digital payments are now a necessity, warranting heightened oversight. The shift comes as digital wallet usage in the U.S. surged to 62% in 2023, up from 47% the previous year, with Apple Pay maintaining dominance in the sector. The new regulatory environment follows global scrutiny of tech firms. Apple recently agreed with European regulators to open its near-field communication technology to competitors, a notable change in its approach. Other firms, like PayPal, are also cooperating with the CFPB on compliance questions regarding digital wallet features. The rule, set to take effect 30 days after its publication, introduces a significant shift in how large tech firms are governed. However, it remains an open question how these regulations will fare under the Trump administration, given the potential for policy shifts in the new political climate.Apple Pay, Other Tech Firms Come Under CFPB Regulatory Oversight This is a public episode.
