I sat down with This Is Us star Chrissy Metz and Nashville songwriter Bradley Collins to talk about their new children’s book, When I Talk to God, I Talk About Feelings. We talked about the power of faith, the importance of self-love, and why helping kids express their emotions early on matters so much. Chrissy and Bradley shared how they had to learn to express themselves as adults because they weren’t taught how as kids—and how that inspired this book. Chrissy also reflected on her time on This Is Us and how being part of such an emotional, beloved show shaped her perspective on empathy, healing, and using your voice.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Her dedication to storytelling has earned her a place among the most revered songwriters of our time. Mickey Newbury was born Milton Sims Newbury Jr. in Houston Texas, May 19, 1940 to Maime and Milton Newbury. As a child, he was inseparable from younger brother, Jerry; a friendship that continued throughout his life. In high school, Mickey decided to write songs. As a teenager, he shut himself up in his room, writing poetry and learning to play guitar. He organized a doo-wop group called The Embers. In 1959, Mickey joined the Air Force and was assigned to England for three years. When he returned to the United States, he pursued his dream of being a songwriter. He lived in a '54 Pontiac and traveled around Texas, Tennessee, and Louisiana playing gigs and working on shrimp boats. Eventually he found himself in Nashville, and in 1964, signed a publishing contract with Acuff-Rose. He moved to Nashville in 1965 and about this time, his first child Joe was born. Shortly thereafter, Jimmy Elledge was first to cover a Newbury song, Just as Long as that Someone is You.1966 was the year the music industry noticed Mickey Newbury. Don Gibson had a Top Ten Country hit with Newbury's Funny Familiar Forgotten Feelings, while Tom Jones scored a world hit with the same song. In 1968, Mickey saw huge success; three number one songs and one number five – across four different charts; Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In) on the Pop/Rock chart by the First Edition, SweetMemories on Easy Listening by Andy Williams, Time is a Thief on the R&B chart by Solomon Burke, and Here Comes the Rain Baby on the Country chart by Eddy Arnold. This feat has not been repeated. That year, Mickey's first album, Harlequin Melodies, was released by RCA.Mickey met New Christy Minstrel member Susan Pack on a blind date in 1967 and would not see her again until 1969. Soon thereafter, they were married and living on a houseboat on Old Hickory Lake outside of Nashville. Over the next four years, Mickey released three albums that raised the bar on Music Row. Produced at Cinderella Studios outside of Nashville, and utilizing Nashville's best musicians, Newbury's trilogy of albums - Looks Like Rain, Frisco Mabel Joy and Heaven Help The Child are often referred to as masterpieces.Following the birth of their first child, Chris, in 1973, the Newburys moved to Oregon, to Susan's home town, just down the street from her parents, to raise their family. A daughter, Leah, followed in 1977. In 1980, Mickey was inducted into the Nashville Songwriter's Hall of Fame.During the 80s, Mickey took a break from the music business to concentrate on his growing family and golf. Stephen joined the family in 1983 and Laura was born in 1986. In the early 90's, he started writing, recording, and performing again, encouraged by his friends Bob Rosemurgy, Marty Hall, and Owsley Mannier. In 1995, Mickey's health began to fail, but he continued to produce beautiful music. 1995 to 2002 were some of his most productive years, during which time he almost doubled his catalogue. He also directed his attention to other ventures, beginning work on children's books based on his story-songs. On September 29, 2002 he succumbed to a long time lung disease and passed away in his sleep at home in Springfield, Oregon.Mickey Newbury's songs have been covered by hundreds upon hundreds of artists; over 1,000 covers have been documented. Mickey also recorded 25 albums over 35 years. Though he considered himself a songwriter first and singer second, his own albums are critically acclaimed and highly desired by a very passionate fan base the world over. Many consider him to be the best of the best. We talk about the 2 completely different ways that we navigate facing and avoiding disappointment, but realize during our conversation that our motives are actually exactly the same. We're curious if you deal with disappointment more like Jill or more like Kate. Or maybe you have a different approach and we'd love to hear from you. Heart. Grit. Scott Stevens likes the way those words roll off his tongue. “It's all about being able to flourish in your own skin,” says Stevens, whose forthcoming debut album, Every Hat Is A Cowboy Hat, is a master class in what happens when a musician leans into his natural-bred confidence and emotion. “Sometimes you gotta double down, step off the ledge and trust whatever it is you trust,” Stevens says of putting his entirety into his music. “The heart of me is somehow split in equal parts rock and roll, soul, and country music,” Stevens says of his lyrically forthright and groove-centric sound. “At its core though, it's just stories in rhythmic form.” Ultimately, Stevens says he's most proud of his unique artistry being unabashedly him. In his eyes, when you're drawing from a well of sincerity as he does on his album, genre is secondary. To that end, Stevens' music is ripe to appeal to rock fans or country fans or frankly anyone who appreciates the uncontrollable urge to nod to the beat. “People that don't think they like country music need to listen to this,” he offers bluntly. “And for the people that don't think it's country music, well, to that I say, ‘Every hat is a cowboy hat if you're a real cowboy.' Scott graduated from Alabama University with a law degree. In addition to his music career, he puts on a legal hat as a criminal defense attorney. He told Whiskey Riff in a recent story about his new album, “Though I'm blessed to suit up and do my thing as an attorney, my dream has always been to support my family with my music.” He says, “I remember starting a job right after graduation and thinking that it was just the most boring thing ever. I looked at the girl I was dating (who is now my wife, Katie), and I said, ‘Look, I don't want to lose you. But I've got to go to Nashville.'” Listen to Scott's music and connect with him on social media:WebsiteSpotifyInstagramFacebookYouTubeTwitter

This week, Chris sits down with Grammy award-winning, absolute legend Jim Ed Norman! From his start in the 70s as a composer, arranger, conductor + player on The Eagles' iconic "Desperado" and "Hotel California" records, to his work as an A&R man / label head at Warner Nashville and Curb Records putting artists like Faith Hill and Randy Travis on the map, Jim Ed's career is one of the most eclectic we've seen. He was one of the first Nashville execs to work towards signing more Black artists in the 80s, and was also a pioneer of expanding the Americana movement in the 90s. On his new release EP III, Nashville, TN songwriter Joseph Hunter Duncan crafts swirling, dreamy, shoegaze-tinged pop-folk. Charting the artists journey to sobriety, the vulnerable, yearning vocals glow with an internal warmth. At turns intimate and grandiose, the music is lifted by the sweet harmonies of Duncan's fluttering falsetto. A soft-edged and gentle record, EP III is the work of a songwriter coming fully into his creative maturity. From the basement of his parent's house to dingy dives across America, Joseph “Hunter” Duncan captures raw emotion and distills it into well-crafted songwriting. He has spent the better part of a decade touring and releasing albums under various monikers (The Lion In Winter, Yosef), nurturing and focusing his storytelling. Now releasing music under his own name, EP III follows 2019's EP I and the 2020 release EP II. While all of the releases in this series were tracked with Tommy Carnes in Nashville at his home studio, EP III is the first that was performed entirely by Duncan. “These songs mostly came along during late summer of 2020” says Duncan. “I was working through massive lifestyle changes, reflecting on behaviors, relationships, and my overall perspective on the things that were and are important to me. I was getting my life in order and mending a broken relationship. I had a rough go with alcohol abuse that affected my family, my work, and just about every aspect of my life.” Diagnosed with Bi-polar 2 disorder in early 2017, EP III reflects that dichotomy in its production. The first half of the record is a touch loud and brash, while the second half is relaxed and stripped down. “I wanted to capture some of the frustration that comes along with having this condition” explains Duncan. “The line in “Rabbit Hole” that goes “I can't, I won't” is really the focus of telling myself to stay on track and don't let the past take you back into the spiral of chaos.” What Duncan has crafted with EP III is a record that eloquently captures the essence of heartbreak, and the realization that ultimately, it's okay to care about yourself. “The record is a plea to my past self not to go back to my old ways, habits, and behaviors” says Duncan. “To remind myself that I can stay on track, with my family, my loved ones and myself. My hope for anyone who listens is that they find a little comfort knowing that you're not alone in those hardships. We are all a little screwed up. Songwriting – and music itself - helps get through it.”
