TW: There are heavy and pointed discussions of suicide and ideation.  For those of you struggling with those thoughts, we suggest skipping this, or parts of this episode.  If you or someone you know needs help, please dial 988 for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline to speak with someone.  Help is available. You're never alone.  There's no need to walk in the dark. . . . Buckle up, 3CG fans, because this week we're diving back into the apex of teen drama and angst with the OG 1955 flick, "Rebel Without a Cause". Another golden Hollywood oldie from our own golden-haired Hollywood old soul.  It becomes increasingly apparent how this movie set the (sound)stage for so many franchises to come as Hannah and the boys delve into the movie that made James Dean an icon and makes us wonder why they were called the silent generation because they sure made a lot of noise.  James Dean stars as Jim Stark, a misunderstood teen who despite his best intentions, always ends up in trouble. Caught in the middle of his parents' strained relationship and constantly searching to find a loving group of his own, Jim turns to an unlikely crew of characters, played by Natalie Wood, Sal Mineo, and Ed Platt, to supplement the missing affections of his milquetoast, middle-class family. Spoiler alert: it doesn't end well. Join the krewe as we explore the darkest inventions wrought by teenage angst, the eternal quest for acceptance, and the real behind-the-scenes drama that made “Rebel Without a Cause” a classic. How often does Terry mention James Dean's flawless skin? How uncomfortable will Matt get? Will Garrett offer any insight that doesn't make Hannah roll her eyes? Grab your tissues and tune in to find out! Before Disney and the Marvel Cinematic Universe took over all things comic book, there was 20th Century Fox and X-Men. If someone wants to see what the comic book film landscape looked like, just take a look at 1989's Punisher and 1994's Phantom. But then came Blade (which we'll cover eventually), a movie that came out in 1998 and proved that cinematic movies based on comic books could indeed be financially successful. And after a lot of false pretenses and multiple script changes, Marvel's X-Men was finally ready to roll before cameras with little known director Bryan Singer behind the camera. Little did we know that not only would this franchise have a lot of peaks and valleys, but the Mouse House would eventually swallow its rights up whole. Will Garrett, Matt, and Batch enjoy the ride up to and through this year's Dark Phoenix? I can't remember a retrospective which had more doom and gloom at the end of the tunnel than this one we are doing for X-Men. From the very beginning, bad press and bad word of mouth seemed to go hand in hand with Dark Phoenix, and I was wondering whether this series was worth diving into. But I feel we put together a hell of a series, and the least we could do was cap it off with this review of new director Simon Kinberg's conclusion Dark Phoenix. But will the film be worth YOUR time? I would like to thank both Batch and Matt for seriously bringing their A-Game for this series, and stay tuned, as there are plans for a MUCH bigger set of shows with the three of us down the road. After X-Men Days of Future Past ended up becoming a huge box office and critical success, director Bryan Singer wasted little time in jumping right back into the director's chair for X-Men: Apocalypse. Released to the worst reviews thus far -as well as $200 million less at the box office- Apocalypse is looked at by many to be the worst X-Men film of the series. But Matt and myself proclaimed at the end of the Deadpool podcast that we originally left the 2016 film feeling like its critical backlash was kind of unwarranted. How do we feel now? Listen below not only to hear us review the film, but also get into the Bryan Singer rumors that actually began years before but really came to the forefront with this and Bohemian Rhapsody two years later. I also talk about actually working at 20th Century Fox during the film's making. All this and more below! And be sure to join us on Friday for our review of Dark Phoenix! Will Garrett, Matt, and Batch enjoy the ride up to and through this year's Dark Phoenix? Surging on their X-Men franchise, 20th Century Fox seemed content with not expanding upon characters which did not have 'Wolverine' in their title. Yet in the background lay a Canadian actor trying to get his dream project made named Ryan Reynolds. Reynolds had played the little known character of Deadpool in 2009's X-Men Origins Wolverine. But he was determined to right the wrong with an origin story that remained true to the character. His persistence paid off as in 2016, Deadpool arrived and ended up being a monster hit, making almost $800 million in the process. I was not one who fell in love with the film when it was originally released, and I had not seen it since when we picked it up for review this week. With Deadpool and Deadpool 2, myself, Batch, and Matt delve even deeper into the X-Men franchise and I try to see if I was missing something three long years ago. Also, how did the sequel pan out? Join us for yet another confrontational podcast in this retrospective series that has had it all. Will a change of opinion be added to the list? Will Garrett, Matt, and Batch enjoy the ride up to and through this year's Dark Phoenix? Eight years after promptly leaving Fox in the dust to do Superman Returns, director Bryan Singer felt he had something to prove. So, in his own little way, he set off to make his own version of Marvel's The Avengers by gathering both his old and Matthew Vaughn's new casts together for the ultimate in X-Men movies, an adaptation of the much heralded series of comic books entitled Days of Future Past. Join Matt, Batch, and myself for perhaps the most spirited discussion in this series yet, as two of us find Singer's 2014 film to be a new standard of X-Men films in a class all by itself. The Marvel Cinematic Universe were al most finished with their first Phase, and DC was not only one year away from concluding their Nolan trilogy of Batman films, they were also entering the fray with the Ryan Reynolds starring Green Lantern. Word started creeping around that after his third solo film about the razor clawed berserker filled Wolverine, which would mark 9 movies and 17 years of playing the character, Hugh Jackman was planning on retiring the old bub. So he got his old buddy James Mangold back in the director's chair for what would be his final go around in an X-Men film. What resulted was 2017's Logan, one of the most well received comic book films ever made. Join myself, Matt, and Batch as we look at the movie and wonder. It was fairly obvious early on that star Hugh Jackman had embodied the character of Logan and Wolverine was in fact the standout of the X-Men series. So following the third -and at the time final- film in the overall X-Men franchise, execs saw dollar signs in exploring the origins of certain characters within the universe. Why not start with the most popular? What could POSSIBLY go wrong? Bryan Singer had moved on to another movie about capes called Superman Returns. And all the cast were up for renegotiation, as word was that the third movie of the trilogy, X-Men: The Last Stand, was going to be it. After the original X-Men was released and a proven success, director Bryan Singer determined the second film in the franchise was going to be his next project. Things have gotten crazy over at DC again, but for a whole different reason than normal. We talk about the news and then review this week's biggest release. The Guardians of the Galaxy may have a ragtag group, but we would argue ours is even more rag-tag. Or at least, more goofy and gooberish. We answer all the questions you have, like: What's the story? Is there a planet with a face? Is this movie for kids? (Spoiler alert, no, it's probably not.) We also answer questions you don't have, like: Will Garrett sing this week again? Sorry, but the answer is yes. All that and more on this week's episode of ROLL SOUND! A big thank you to our sponsor, Grand Avenue Theater in Belton, Texas.
