Would you say you have fire in your belly? What does it burn for? I love exploring this question with highly sensitive people, many of whom have a deep, smouldering fire within. This fire is often linked to our values, beliefs, and personally compelling principles. I love helping people explore and (re)connect with this inner fire, supporting them to figure out how to harness it in unapologetic ways. In this episode of The Gentle Rebel Podcast, we will consider what this fire looks, feels, and sounds like. We'll also explore how it can sometimes get extinguished, hidden, or even escalate beyond control. We think about how to fuel, harness, and express our inner fire in ways that resonate with us as individuals. What does it mean to have a fire in your belly, and how can we express it without conforming to others' expectations? As Dorcas Cheng-Tozun said about social justice for the sensitive soul, we don't have to fit into anyone else's boxes when it comes to expressing ourselves. The fire in everyone's belly burns differently, and how we process and turn it outwards is equally unique What is The Fire in Your Belly? It's usually a compliment when we say someone has fire in their belly. It speaks to a visible energy, enthusiasm, and sense of purpose that radiates from within. But this phrase doesn't always account for those whose fire burns deeply and quietly and isn't as immediately apparent as the big, bright flames we might associate with explicit passion. For highly sensitive people, that inner fire is often potent. Fire In The Belly of Sensitivity If you search for definitions of "fire in the belly," you'll often find it described as a strong determination to succeed, emotional stamina, and an intense drive to achieve or accomplish something. These definitions highlight a particular kind of fire, focused on personal goals, winning, or attaining power and glory. They don't tell the whole story, especially for those driven by values and principles (how and why) more than outcomes (what) For many sensitive people, the fire in their belly is not about achieving for the sake of achieving. It's not the pursuit of bigger, better, faster, or stronger in a conventional sense. Personal achievements matter, but they are often most compelling when they resonate with a broader purpose or have a meaningful impact on the world around them. Dampening The Belly Fire The fire in our belly can go missing when we seek safe, predictable, and comfortable ways to navigate life. For example, the desire to avoid conflict can cause that fire to dim or even disappear over time. Feeling Too Much For highly sensitive individuals, the inconvenience their passions might cause others can feel too jarring, especially when there's a perceived incompatibility with others' views, values, or beliefs. The fear of judgment, criticism, or rejection can be a powerful motivator to keep that fire hidden. Standing up for something we care deeply about can feel risky when it threatens to create friction with those around us. This fear can lead to the suppression of our inner fire, keeping it tucked away where it feels safer but also less alive. The Role of Perfectionism Perfectionism is another factor that can dampen the fire in our belly. When we express our passions, we open ourselves up to the uncertainty and unpredictability of creativity. There's a vulnerability in allowing our fire to rise, in letting it breathe and take form, because we can never be sure what might come from it. The desire for perfection can keep us from taking those risks, leading us to stifle our fire rather than face the unknown. The Impact of Cold Buckets of Water And when others throw cold buckets of water—through criticism or dismissive comments—it can make us hesitant to let our fire show again. Caroline McGraw's shared how an offhand remark snuffed out her passion as a child. It's a reminder that the wrong words at a vulnerab...

During this episode of the “So She Did” Podcast, Kristin is joined by author, TedX Speaker, coach and fellow podcaster, Mighty Pete Lonton to discuss the importance of finding your passion—what Kristin calls ‘living a life that sets your soul on fire,' and what Pete calls ‘Fire in Your Belly.' Despite living on different continents, Kristin and Pete each had similar experiences in their mid-thirties of questioning who they were and whether they were on the right path. The episode begins with a discussion of these catalysts and then Pete shares his journey into greater self-awareness. Pete questions what it is that makes some people get up and turn on the television, while others get up and change their lives and the world for better. What sets the two apart? Passion! Pete discusses the idea of “Fire in Your Belly,” and the need for each of us to find that passion so that we can live more meaningful and fulfilling lives. The conversation ends with thoughts on how we can not only re-invent ourselves, but also how we can re-build ourselves. Pete suggests that we are all born with passion and purpose, but in the process of life and socialization we are told and begin to believe stories about who we are and who we should be. Kristin suggests that when we go back to chapter one, we have the ability to re-write these stories and become who we were meant to be at the very beginning, before life got in the way. The Garden in Your Belly with Heather Grzych When Heather Gryzch began graduate school to study Ayurveda, a 5,000-year-old system of medicine from India, her parents thought she was joining a cult - they simply had never had heard of it. In her book, The Ayurvedic Guide to Fertility: A Natural Approach to Getting Pregnant, Heather details her journey of the study of this ancient healing practice and ties it to the preparation for fertility the modern woman can take to welcome the journey of another soul into this world. In this episode, Heather dives into the basics of Ayurveda, and connects it specifically with the Four Fertility Factors (Seed, Season, Field and Water) that can help prepare the garden of the body for a healthy pregnancy. Although this journey was deeply personal for her, having her child just before she turned 40, her work brings hope and resources to those all over who dream of being a mother. Bio: Heather Grzych is the author of The Ayurvedic Guide to Fertility. A board-certified Ayurvedic practitioner, she bridges the worlds of conventional and alternative medicine to help women and men heal their physical and emotional lives. In our last couple +1s, we’ve talked about your breathing. If you haven’t checked out the full Optimal Breathing 101 master class yet, you might dig it. For now, how about a quick look at the THREE simple rules of optimal breathing? Here they are: Breathe through your nose Into your belly And exhale slightly longer than you inhaled 1 + 2 + 3 = Magic. How about a quick inventory then a closer look? First, the quick inventory: You breathing through your nose? (Most people don’t. Go look around and/or in the mirror. Do you see a mouth gaping open?) Do you breathe deeply (yet calmly) into your belly? (Most people don’t—especially if you breathe through your mouth!) And, is your exhale slightly longer than your inhale? (This is the fastest way to relax!) Now, for the closer look: Rule #1. Breathe Through Your Nose (EXCLUSIVELY!) When? All day. Every day. (Including while sleeping and training.) Why? Well, check out the class for a full description (and/or the Notes on The Oxygen Advantage, etc.) but here’s the basic idea. First: Your nose filters, humidifies and conditions air in ways your mouth simply can’t. Second: Know that we NEVER used to breathe through our mouths except for the most extreme instances of physical exertion. (Think: Lion chasing you.) Third: When you breathe through your mouth, you tend to “overbreathe” via short, shallow, fast breaths that disrupt the oxygen to carbon dioxide levels in your body. Although it might sound weird, it’s the CARBON DIOXIDE that actually gets the oxygen out of your red blood cells and into your tissues and organs and you need to slow down your breathing (via your nose!) to get the CO2 right and, as a result, the O2 where you want it. Rule #2. Breathe into Your Belly Fill up the lower part of your lungs. Flex your most underappreciated and underutilized muscle in your body. Get your diaphragm rocking!! Note: Don’t take “big” breaths via your mouth into your chest. Take nice, mellow, quiet, DEEP breaths into your belly. Repeat. All day. Every day. Rule #3. Exhale Slightly Longer than You Inhale. This is the fastest way to flip the flip the vagal switch and turn on your parasympathetic nervous system and R E L A X. Whenever you think about it: Exhale longer than you inhale. (Finish strong as we like to say at the Johnson house!) Squeeze your diaphragm. Get all that air out. Why? Well, did you know that breathing is responsible for 70% (!!!) of your body’s detoxification? Elimination and sweat only take care of 30%. (Kinda surprising, eh?) But, guess what? If you’re not breathing right, you’re not detoxifying fully. And, of course, you’re not fueling your cells properly. Enter: Compromised vitality and increased potential of getting all the things you don’t want. Therefore: Nose. Belly. Exhale. Practice. Practice. Practice. Today’s +1. How about a nice, deep, calm breath. In through your nose… Down into your belly… Out through your nose with a nice, long exhale. Ah… Here’s to your Optimal Breathing!

In Dawn's battle to resurrect hope, she gives free seminars in her community and is a published author and nationwide speaker. Dawn feels like every little bit counts. Dawn recently finalized plans to release "A Year of Fear", an informative workbook that is devoted to embracing your fears and conquering them in order to live your best life. These past few days I have being feeling a bit down, sad and not wanting to feel these feelings while they we coming to the surface of my heart. My tendency is to ignore and not let myself feel sad which in turn denies the very gift of embodiment - diversity of experience. With being in the body there is an extraordinary opportunity to connect and feel the feelings we have so why deny oneself? When we don't allow the flow to happen we deny the very gift we have been given. I first heard this from one of my teachers Dr. Douglas Brooks and it woke me up to see that yes, life (every bit of it) is a gift. When we embrace and see all of our potential even with the bad feelings or circumstances then we can better align in every way and go directly to the ocean of the heart. Some yoga's teach liberation from the body and Anusara teaches it in the body - this one gels with me. I invite you to see all that you have experienced as a gift, your life as a gift, and that you are a gift allow each one to be a portal to greater awareness. About 11 years ago being diagnosed with MS could of been a sentence to suffer but I used the yoga to turn it around and make something good out of it deepening the value of my life.
