Worried about the impact your teen's friends are having on them? You're not alone—and it's not as simple as “good” or “bad” peer pressure. In this episode of Parenting Teens with Dr. Cam, I sit down with peer influence expert Dr. Brett Laursen to unpack how friendships actually shape teen behavior (often for the better!) and how parents can stay influential without being controlling. Dr. Laursen, who has decades of research tracking teen friendships across multiple countries, shares surprising insights that can help you guide your teen through the tricky world of social dynamics, middle school transitions, and online influence. If you've ever wondered, "Am I losing my teen to their friends?" — this conversation is a must-listen. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN IN THIS EPISODE Why peer pressure isn't always a bad thing and can actually drive positive behavior in teens How to stay relevant as a parent even when friends seem to have more influence What to do (and NOT do) if you're worried about your teen's friends How online and real-world friendships impact vulnerable teens differently 5 KEY TAKEAWAYS FOR PARENTS OF TEENS Friendship first, influence second: Teens choose friends who are similar to them, not the other way around. Middle school changes everything: The shift from adult-centered to peer-centered social life demands a new parenting approach. Stay connected, don't compete: Your teen needs a supportive parent, not a rival for attention. Opportunities, not ultimatums: Help your teen find better friendships by fostering their interests, not forcing social changes. Humanize yourself: Teens respect advice more when they see you as a real person, not just an authority figure.

This episode brings together two historians who have recently published biographies of 20th-century Indian radicals. The first guest, Ole Birk Laursen is an historian whose work focuses on anarchism and anti-colonialism from the mid-19th century to the mid-20th century, with a focus on South Asian activists in exile. His first book, Anarchy or Chaos: M. P. T. Acharya and the Indian Struggle for Freedom, was published last year by Hurst & Co. He is currently a Researcher in the Department of History at Lund University, Sweden, where he is working on the history of anarchism and syndicalism in Scandinavia. The second guest, Nico Slate, is a professor in the Department of History at Carnegie Mellon University. His research examines struggles against racism and imperialism in the United States and India. His latest book is The Art of Freedom: Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay and the Making of Modern India, published this year by University of Pittsburgh Press. In each of their new books, Ole and Nico take on big questions of freedom, ideological commitment, anti-colonial activism, and transnational radicalism through deeply-researched portraits of a particular figure. Although covering very different people, both works offer fascinating points of overlap and resonance as well as interesting points of contrast. Hosted on Acast. In this informative episode of the Athletes Compass podcast, hosts Paul Warloski and Dr. Paul Laursen, alongside guest Marjaana Rakai, delve into the intricacies of nutrition for early morning workouts. They discuss whether it's necessary to fuel before high-intensity training sessions, particularly when they occur first thing in the morning. Dr. Laursen emphasizes the importance of understanding personal dietary habits and encourages experimenting with nutrition to discover what enhances individual performance. They tackle listener questions, dissect common misconceptions about caloric intake, and advise on optimal post-workout nourishment, focusing on whole foods and proper protein intake, and they discuss nutritional strategies for vegan and vegetarian athletes.Key Takeaways:For short, early morning workouts, pre-fueling may not be necessary as the body has sufficient stores from dinner the night before.Eating natural, whole foods is recommended over processed sports nutrition products for both pre- and post-workout meals. It's important to experiment with nutrition individually to observe its impact on performance.Post-exercise fueling with whole foods is crucial for recovery, and athletes should not neglect the intake of protein.Nutritional needs can vary widely on rest days versus training days, and hunger cues should guide eating decisions.Calorie counting can be flawed; instead, focusing on the quality of food and its nutrient content is more beneficial.Vegan and vegetarian athletes may face challenges in meeting protein and nutrient requirements and may need supplements.A high-carbohydrate diet lowers the rate of adipose tissue mitochondrial respiration - PubMedPaul Warloski - Endurance, Strength Training, YogaMarjaana Rakai - Tired Mom Runs - Where fitness meets motherhood.

A must read, new book on the origin of evil: Author and filmmaker Christian Laursen joins us Christian Laursen joins us today to discuss his book about the origin of evil. He shares how he saw people had become apathetic towards evil, but after 9/11, he began to wake up. He discusses several very personal encounters with evil and poses one question: 'What is it?' We explore the notion that evil must entail a component of deriving pleasure from harming others to be truly evil, and through our discussion, we arrive at the conclusion that evil is an entity. Christian reminds us that there is hope and discusses the actions we can take. In a similar vein, we discuss how The Party has effectively created a new, master race with special privileges and powers and how that cannot be sustained in a functioning society. What does God's Word say? Genesis 2:16-18And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”John 8:44You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.Colossians 2:12-13Having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through your faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead. When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sinsEpisode Links:Evil's Origin By: Christian Laursen 4Patriots https://4patriots.com Protect your family with Food kits, solar generators and more at 4Patriots.

Ron Copeland has worked for the Corps of Engineers for over 5 decades, 52 years at the Los Angeles district and the Corps' Coastal and Hydraulics lab in Vicksburg Mississippi. He also worked for 10 years as a principle engineer at Mobile Boundary Hydraulics, which was the premiere 1D sediment transport modeling firm for decades. But Dr. Copeland has not only been on a very short list of the very best 1D sediment transport modelers for decades, he also developed several equations and algorithms that multiple models use. In 2020, he won the ASCE, Hans Albert Einstein award. And, while I think Dr. Copeland's modeling expertise has a lot of value to the community growing around this podcast (and we spent some time talking modeling) his sediment and river mechanics contributions include much more . He led a team who wrote the Corps early guidance on restoration channel design and developed an important, expedited, tool to evaluate sediment continuity of restored channels, a common failure mode of early restoration projects. We talked to him about all of that...and some more technical topics that we spun out into video shorts (see the website link).Video shorts and other bonus content are available at the podcast website:(Note: This link was broken and has been fixed)https://www.hec.usace.army.mil/confluence/rasdocs/rastraining/latest/the-rsm-river-mechanics-podcastand the HEC Sediment YouTube channel:https://www.youtube.com/user/stanfordgibson

Episode Summary:In this episode, Matthew speaks with Dai Shizuka (@ShizukaLab), an associate professor in the school of biological sciences at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. They start out by talking about social networks in humans and non-human animals. They discuss applying these techniques to non-model organisms, like the golden-crowned sparrows that Dai has studied. Then they talk about the relationship between space use and sociality, and the feedback between the two. After the break, they talk about how Dai was drawn to animal behavior while growing up in urban environments, and his work to promote justice for those in his academic and non-academic communities.
