Middle-grade fiction is among Julie's favorite categories because of its ability to explore heavy concepts through the forthright lens of a young main character, and Janae Marks knows how to capitalize on this potential in her writing. She joins Julie to share the inspiration for her first book, From the Desk of Zoe Washington, and how she later came to write the unexpected sequel, On Air with Zoe Washington (out February 14, 2023). Julie and Janae discuss the process of writing Zoe as an eighth grader who had honest flaws but significant strengths, and Janae shares about why writing middle grade is her sweet spot – and how she found herself there. Hello listeners! Today I'm reviewing A Soft Place to Land by Janae Marks, the author of a great middle grade read From the Desk of Zoe Washington. If you listened to/watched my video episode, you'll know that I recently got A Soft Place to Land from the library. It's such an engaging book that I read it all in one day! Joy Taylor misses a lot of things. She misses her piano lessons. She misses the thick wall of her old bedroom. But mostly, she misses her old house. After Joy's father gets fired from his job, Joy and her family have to move to an apartment across town. Joy has to start at a new school, and she's worried she won't make any friends. With some friendly neighbors like Mae, Ziggy, and Nora, Joy starts to fit in and become friends with a group of 4: Nora, Elena, Oliver, and Miles. They even show her a secret room in the apartment that only kids know about! But between juggling her increasing worries about her parents getting divorced, her new job dog walking with Nora, and writing to the secret person in the Hideout, Joy fears everything might fall apart. INCLUDING her newfound friendships. How can Joy fix this? Email me at theseriesreview13@gmail.com. Enjoy! Send me a voice message at anchor.fm/riya-b13-message

In this episode I got to talk with an awesome and brilliant young lady that I've had the pleasure of knowing for over 10 years. She is talking about her experiences as a child when it comes to literacy. She also gives some great pointers on how to encourage more young people to want to read. Her grace, sweetness and thoughtfulness was really exuding throughout this whole episode. Make sure you have your notebooks and pens handy because Aminah was dropping dimes, nuggets and jewels. This Program Originally Aired on December 23rd, 2020. As the country’s young population is becoming more diverse, children’s and young adult literature books are struggling with representation. According to a 2019 report on diversity in books, roughly 42% of books feature a white main character. So, what is being done to disrupt this? This hour on Disrupted, we delve into the world of young adult literature and why it is important to see representation and diversity in books. We’ll hear from Chandra Prasad about writing multi-racial characters and a young author about protesting. We’ll also hear from a local bookstore on what they are doing to bring more representation and inclusion to their community.
