Robert Burke Warren (or RBW) is quite possibly, one of the most interesting men I've ever had the pleasure of speaking to on this podcast. Between his exploits playing in RuPaul's (yes, THE RuPaul) band when RBW was just 18 years old to his latest book "Cash on Cash" about the man in black, Johnny Cash he has seen and experienced a lot! To quote RBW "Music is the highest form of communication" and we utilize this podcast to communicate about an incredible story from an incredible storyteller. Tune in to find out how RBW answers the questions essential to the essence of the podcast: 1. What does music mean to you? 2. How do you quantify success? 3. And what happens after the music fades? For more programming and advertisement opportunities, please visit www.robertsmediagroup.co About Robert Burke Warren I arrive in the year of Rubber Soul, Highway 61 Revisited, and My Generation: 1965. My Journalism major mom and guitar-playing Marine dad divorce before I turn two. Mom retains custody of my elder brother, Britt, and me. We come of age in Atlanta, in the waning days of the hippie dream and the onset of disco; arts festivals, backwoods, communes, the golden age of Top 40 radio, and a house stocked with books and LPs. My father dies driving drunk a couple weeks after my seventh birthday. Mom returns to school to study medicine. Maternal grandmother, Gammie, steps in to help raise my brother and me. Her husband, my grandfather, Sam F. Lucchese, is the retired entertainment editor of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and a stringer for Variety. He still taps furiously on a manual typewriter in the basement of their home, the percussive clickety-clack-BING rising from below while we watch All in the Family and the Carol Burnett Show. My writing gene comes from the Lucchese line. I pen stories and poems and co-edit a newspaper for teens, but in those early days, Dad's musician genes hold sway, and I focus most of my energy on music. I pick up a bass at fourteen and devote myself to it. Within a couple years, I start a band with my longtime best friend, guitarist Todd Butler. Our singer is superstar-in-exile RuPaul. We call ourselves Wee Wee Pole. We write and perform Prince-inspired material. From Gammie's kitchen, I book us a tour to Manhattan. I am eighteen. About Cash on Cash As an interviewee, Cash was an exemplary communicator to an astonishingly broad spectrum of people: always open and articulate, part friend, part spiritual authority, part flawed hero. Throughout a decades-long career, as Cash took risks, embracing new technologies, formats, and attitudes, he cleaved to a simple, core message of unvarnished truth. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/after-the-encore/message

Travis has been playing music for about 30 years. Piano lessons started at 6 until the instrument became uncool at the age of 11. Then it was classical guitar, which wasn't loud enough. Then it was bass, which was fun for a while, but proved to be difficult to use as a writing instrument. Finally, Travis found his way to the electric guitar (keys have been given a second chance) and the creation of hundreds of songs since the mid 90's. He is probably most well known for his time as lead singer, guitarist, and songwriter of the Boston-based band, Piebald. Started in 1994, PIebald released 5 albums, and toured constantly until the “last shows” in 2008. - http://www.masqueradeatlanta.com/attraction/travis-shettel-piebald/ I was stoked to get the opportunity to interview Travis for this podcast. The Alt music scene in the mid-00's really shaped my perspective of my youth and my worldview overall. Several of these songs are still anthems for me after all these years. Travis and I dig into all that and more! In After the Encore Volume 7: The Alternative Is... Texas-born Garrett Owen had a musical awakening at age 14 that manifested as an intense desire to learn guitar and an insatiable love for all things heavy metal. Eventually, he began exploring other genres, diligently saving his weekly allowance to afford mail-order CDs to satisfy his typical childhood curiosity. But, Owen's childhood was anything but typical. Instead of Little League and sleepovers, Owen's earliest memories involve frequent trips across the Serengeti and backyard wildlife most of us only experience at our local zoos. The son of church-building missionaries, he grew up in Tanzania and Kenya, riding on the luggage rack of the family's Nissan Patrol, with vast clear skies above him and gazelles running beside. After leaving Africa, the family completed a stint in Ecuador before Owen's parents moved the family back to Texas. Life as he knew it became a difficult endeavor; rimmed with the sharp edges of reality in an unfamiliar place, his attempts to settle into a culture he didn't understand resulted in distress and a suicide attempt - a far cry from the idyllic landscape of his upbringing. - https://garrett-owen.com/band I have always enjoyed the artistic nature of Garrett's music and was thrilled to get the opportunity to discuss it with him on this episode. While this episode is not part of a larger Volume we are releasing it under the moniker of "B-Sides" since it is a bonus track just for you. An Americana Music Association Award-winner, Mary Gauthier's 2018 release Rifles & Rosary Beads received a Grammy nomination for Best Folk Album. The emotional and powerful album was co-written with U.S. veterans and their families and served to help them cope with the trauma they all experienced both abroad and at home. The album won “Album of The Year” at the International Folk Music Awards (Folk Alliance) and Gauthier was awarded the Americana Music Association UK “International Artist Of The Year” award in 2019. Gauthier was featured on NPR Weekend Edition, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Associated Press, Billboard, Oxford American and a very moving segment on CBS This Morning (View HERE). Watch Gauthier's interview with Sarah Silverman on I Love You, America HERE. In her upcoming memoir Saved by a Song, Mary Gauthier pulls the curtain back on the artistry of songwriting. Part memoir, part philosophy of art, part nuts and bolts of songwriting, her book celebrates the redemptive power of song to inspire and bring seemingly different kinds of people together. Dead Vinyl is a fantastic rock & roll band from Ft. Worth, TX. They will draw you in with their powerhouse sound on hits such as "Till the Cosmos Fall" and then comfort you with the soft melodic sounds of newer songs such as "Let Love Do". I'd be lying if I told you that Dead Vinyl are not friends of mine. The truth is, I've known these guys a very long time and was ecstatic to finally get to record a podcast episode with them. Dead Vinyl consists of: Hayden Miller on Vocals, Zach Tucker on Bass, Parker Anderson on Drums, and Tyler Vela on Guitar. While we unfortunately did not get to record with Tyler on this episode Hayden, Parker, and Zach take us through the various iterations of their bands before forming Dead Vinyl, there are a lot of stories and even more laughs.I was so fortunate to get to talk to these three guys a few months ago and I hope you enjoy it even half as much as we did. While this episode is not part of a larger Volume we are releasing it under the moniker of "B-Sides" since it is a bonus track just for you.Tune in to find out how the Dead Vinyl crew answers the questions essential to the essence of the podcast:1. Described as poetic pop, Deza’s music is familiar yet fresh, sitting sonically at the crux of artists like Tove Lo & Jon Bellion. Combining elements of today's top-40 with an unheard emotional intensity, Deza is bringing a much needed dose of authentic storytelling back into the pop realm. Her honest vulnerability recently caught the eye of hit songwriter, Emily Warren, who has credits with Dua Lipa, The Chainsmokers, Sigrid, Lennon Stella, and so many more. Deza is now the first and only writer signed to Emily's brand new publishing company, Under Warrenty, alongside Prescription Songs. With this new signing, Deza has effortlessly catapulted herself into the upper echelon of today's hit writers. A champion of expressive lyricism and addictive melodies, Deza is one to keep your eye on.In After the Encore Volume 5: Who Runs The World? Davy Baysinger, lead singer of Bleach, closes out the Volume today with his career retrospective. I was very excited for this episode because Bleach headlined the first ever concert I saw! Known for their infectious energy and ability to be the "fun band" Bleach sought to bridge the gap between Christianity and Rock & Roll. Davy details how Bleach got their start, and how they've continued to stay relevant all these years later. It's the perfect end to this soul-searching Volume. What do you do when you want to make music which feels true to you, but you're constantly reminded you're part of a "Christian" label? Owen Thomas and The Elms were unapologetically authentic in all aspects. From the moment they were making music The Elms were clear in that whether you were booking them for a club or a church they were going to perform the same. Take it or leave it. This was their truth, and it built them a loyal following.Eventually deciding to part ways with the Christian music trappings they set out to forge their own path. What followed has been a legacy unlike most groups who leave the Christian Contemporary landscape.Owen shares his soul with us about his time growing up, time being in The Elms, and how he has made it through some dark times with some clarity. What do you do when you want to make music which feels true to you, but you're constantly reminded you're part of a "Christian" label? Sparrow Records took a chance on Adam LaClave and his group 'Earthsuit' when they signed them to a record deal. There was nothing that sounded like Earthsuit on the label and hardly anything else within all of Christian music which compared. Adam was ahead of his time, trying to make epic alternative music while struggling with his own views on Spirituality as well as his Sexual Orientation. Bowling for Soup are one of the most iconic groups to come out of the Dallas/Fort Worth, TX area, period. Ok, I may be a bit biased but seriously, their fan base has been named one of the top 10 of all time! What happens when you go from "making the band" to reforming the band?Jacob Underwood was part of the sensational group O-Town. Brought together for the reality show "Making the Band" (a pre-cursor to other competition-based shows like: American Idol and The Voice) Jacob and the rest of the members found success beyond the trappings of the TV show. With their single "All Or Nothing" they ensured themselves a spot in fan's hearts for decades. What happens after the music fades? With most folks this podcast would be about how an artist progressed in their solo ventures after the band broke up. Michael Lee is a Fort Worth based Blues artist. Raised around blues music his entire life, Michael spent the majority of his young life in blues clubs receiving an ivy league education from watching and playing with blues legends such as Andrew "Jr Boy" Jones (Freddie King), Buddy Whittington (John Mayall), Lucky Peterson (Willie Dixon). On nights he was not in the blues clubs he was down in the stockyards soaking in the Country sounds which emanated from those honky tonks. Like Delbert McClinton and many Fort Worth musicians before him, Michael’s style of music has the perfect blend of Blues and Country.Michael Lee was one of the contestants that blew the coaches away and surprised them once they turned around. The singer shocked coaches by having the deep tone to sing B.B.King’s “The Thrill Is Gone.” Adam Levine, Jennifer Hudson, and Blake Shelton turned around for his performance. Jaimee Harris is poised to become the next queen of Americana-Folk, a slightly edgier Emmylou Harris for the younger generation. Her new album draws comparisons to Patty Griffin, Lucinda Williams, and Kathleen Edwards – all writers who know how to craft a heartbreakingly beautiful song with just enough grit to keep you enthralled. Harris writes about the basic human experience, in a way that is simple, poetic, and often painfully relatable."You keep comin over... I keep goin under..."Harris isn’t afraid to get personal, but her vulnerability never veers into the self-indulgent. Each little confessional gem she puts out there is something the listener will connect to; these are things we’ve all felt, though many of us are less than likely to admit them. “In a depressive state… how long will I feel this way?” Harris's songs have a depth to them, and her lyrics betray a wisdom beyond her years. “I write as a way of dealing with things," she says. "There’s also a lot of acknowledging my own faults. These songs feel pretty vulnerable… to the point where I wonder if people are going to ask me ‘Are you okay?’ But I really just hope they see a little bit of themselves in the songs and find something they can connect to.”Be sure to rate, review, and subscribe to the podcast. To follow Jaimee Harris go to JaimeeHarris.comTo listen to the official Spotify playlist for Volume 1: The Stars At Night click below!https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3H8FohMC1Xu7gvtEUaWipA?si=cosHb8CsQN2sob1pN2sob1pNzuyMQ
