Randy Jacobs grew up in the Motown city launching a career as a songwriter and guitarist. As a member of Was (Not Was) in the early 1980's he honed his musical skills. In the early 1990's Randy played on an album of all-star musicans called Soul Mission. Shortly afterwards, he formed The Boneshakers. Randy shares his insights with award-winning program director Ray White talking about the start-up of the band, teaming with saxophonist/vocalist Mindy Abair, playing with the legendary Bonnie Raitt, serving as music director for a jazz legend, and The Boneshakers latest album One Foot In The Groove - which was #1 on U.S. Soul Blues chart and #1 on a U.K. Blues chart. In our showcase segment, Lisa Davis features 4-time Grammy winner Delbert McClinton, whose latest album is Outdated Emotion. She also highlights the 2-time Grammy nominee Kenny Wayne Shepherd that released Dirt On My Diamonds Vol. 1 in 2023. Great blues musicians are laying it down on this episode from the Coool CAT!
In this conversation recorded on The Smooth Jazz Cruise 24.1, saxophonist Mindi Abair talks with cruise host Talaya from SiriusXM. . Mindi talked about collaborating with other artists on The Smooth Jazz Cruise. And about breaking into the music business when she first moved to LA where she was discovered by Bobby Lyle. She also reflects on partnering with guitarist Randy Jacobs in the band The Boneshakers. And of course she discusses her wine and jazz adventures.
There's one question that gets asked in this week's episode that's really stuck with me and that I continued to ponder even after we'd said our goodbyes and turned our microphones off... And that question is: how do you know when you have become the person that you're supposed to be? By that I mean - at what point do you say 'yes this is the person I was supposed to be' rather than continue to strive and figure that out? Or, do you just kind of like make do with who you presently are and accept that that might change one day? And it's one of those annoying questions where there probably isn't an answer, so it's not worth expending any energy trying to figure it out, but if you have any suggestions do let me know! But for now, let's focus on our guest for this week's episode, Amethysta Herrick, writer and host of the Gender Identity Weekly podcast. Amethysta came out as a trans woman in 2022, but if you've ever come out then you know that it takes a lot of mental computation and processing to get to that point and it's usually something that you know about a long time before you're willing to share it with the wider world. But luckily for us we have queer spaces where it's safe to explore these things. And, one of the places that helped Amethysta explore and understand her identity was the Athens, Georgia bar Boneshakers, where, way back in the 90s, she got to try out an alternate identity - she named herself Selina after Catwoman's civilian name - and just got to flirt, hang out, and exist as herself. Do you have any memories of Boneshakers, or clubbing from your own scene that you want to share? Well, if you have please get in touch - I want to create the biggest online record of people's memories and stories - go to www.lostspacespodcast.com and find the section 'Share a Lost Space' and tell me what you got up to! Bonus points for embarrassing photos! You can also find me on Facebook (www.facebook.com/lostspacespod) and Instagram (www.instagram.com/lostspacespod) Find out more about Amethysta by listening to her podcast, Gender Identity Weekly, or by visiting her website (https://www.amethysta.io/) Takeaways Identity is a continuous process of becoming and evolving, and there is no fixed destination. The 90s were a time of both darkness and hope for Amethysta, as she navigated her gender transition and struggled with mental health. Living in Athens as a student was a formative experience for Amethysta, shaping her understanding of herself and her place in the world. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/k-anderson/message

Randy Jacobs, guitarist/band leader/music director, cut his teeth working with many at Motown as a youth. In the 1980's he was a member of the eclectic pop band Was (Not Was). Following that stint, Randy was in-demand by many of the popular music artists of the day. In 1994 he formed his own band - The Boneshakers, combining R&B, Soul, Jazz, Rock and Pop. Most recently, Randy's Boneshakers collaborated with sax stalwart Mindi Abair to release several high-energy albums - with the latest titled No Good Deed. Award-winning program director Ray White, caught up with Randy backstage before a show to talk about his music heritage and recent projects. In our showcase segment, Lisa Davis features the super talented saxophonist/flutist/vocalist Paula Atherton, whose latest release Can You Feel It is rapidly climbing the charts. We'll also remember the life of Johnny Nash, who passed on October 6, 2020. Coool dudes (and ladies) join us on the Coool CAT!

Let's hear the blues of Johnny Winters, Taj Mahal, Koko Taylor, and Janis Joplin on my podcast. Blueprint special is James Brown and The Boneshakers with "Cold Sweat".
GRAMMY-nominated saxophone player and singer/songwriter Mindi Abair has played with a slew of greats and commands audiences around the world as she tours with her band, The Boneshakers. She’s transitioned from straight on jazz to blues, and has impressive vocal and songwriting chops, too. Here we talk about what’s next for Mindi and much more. Guitarist Randy Jacobs has a list of credits a mile long. The Detroit native's career goes back over 40 years and includes just about every genre there is - including a few years with Bonnie Raitt here, a couple with Paul Kelly there, etc. A guy doesn't get asked to play with the likes of Michael Henderson, Seal, Tears For Fears and Bruce Hornsby if he doesn't know what he's doing. But he may be best known as a member of the wholly unique supergroup Was (Not Was). He even co-wrote their biggest hit "Walk The Dinosaur." These days, when he isn't recruited to work with Depeche Mode or General Public, he's focused on his blues rock group with saxophonist Mindi Abair the Boneshakers. They just released a solid new album, No Good Deed, a couple weeks ago. Settle in and hear many stories from a guy who's been in the game longer than some of us have been alive! https://www.randyjacobs.com/

It's all new music in this hour of The Roadhouse. Only two tracks are as old as 2018, three are from upcoming releases, and three more are making Roadhouse debuts. Big Joe & The Dynaflows, Mindi Abair & The Boneshakers, Bobby Rush, The Tesky Brothers, and Robert Nighthawk & The Wampus Cats make for an hour of the freshest blues you'll hear anywhere. And they definitely make for another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 745th Roadhouse.
Mindi Abair brings her group the Boneshakers to the Dakota for two shows on June 16th 2019 playing her style of rock and roll saxophone. She talked with Jazz88's Patty Peterson about the show and her new release "No Good Deed" out at the end of the month.
Superstar musician and songwriter MINDI ABAIR took some time to chat with me after finishing her latest album. She's been recording music for twenty years and over a dozen albums, but this her third studio project as Mindi Abair and the Boneshakers. Mindi shared her musical life story from zero to fifty, as May 23rd is her milestone birthday. And I wish I had her energy and drive, but I am sure those qualities must come from doing what she loves everyday. This entire sax therapy session includes music from Mindi's new album, NO GOOD DEED brought to you by her label Pretty Good For A Girl records. Enjoy the show, and wish Mindi a very happy birthday. [Originally broadcast May 23, 2019]* I do not own the rights to Mindi Abair's music. Used with permission © 2019 Pretty Good For A Girl Records *www.MindiAbair.com
Throughout her career you could find Mindi Abair in the middle of the contemporary jazz, pop, rock, R&B, and blues scenes. From Aerosmith...to the Boss...to jazz's Summer Horns, Mindi has graced the spotlight. This awesome saxophonist has been tapped for two Grammy nominations and produced over ten #1 radio singles as a solo artist. Award-winning program director, Ray White, sits down with Mindi to discuss her dynamic career and latest chart-topping projects with The Boneshakers during this October of 2018 interview. Her latest album with the Boneshakers is titled East West Sessions - and she's just released a Christmas album with the band, too! Show host Lisa Davis, features saxman Walter Beasley in our "showcase segment." Walter has released over two dozen albums and his latest single is titled Skip To My Lew. "Pretty Good for a Girl," a track on Mindi Abair and the Boneshakers' first studio album, The EastWest Sessions, is about empowering and supporting women and a cause Berklee alumna Abair B.M. '91 has taken up.
