This week we are welcoming witch, astrologer, artist, folk-psychopomp, and dear friend Jove Spucchi onto the cast to talk about nightlife, eros, and the magic woven in queer and liminal spaces. In this episode, we take a deep dive into the magical potency of nightlife by discussing Jove's experiences weaving liminal magic within dance floors, through sound, and within communities that embrace the intersections between art, music, queerness, and the divine. Drawing their own experiences as nightlife builder, inspirited dancer, and magical practitioner, Jove shares with us the the power found on the dance floor to transcend the boundaries of self through intuitive self-expression and surrender to Desire. How does dance help us feel safe in our bodies? What are the similarities of Otherness between those who identify as queer vs witch? How can we take the undulating energy of desire and use it to shape a world in which we all get to surrender to safety, intimacy, and vulnerability of heart through the ekstatis of the moon and the dionysian impulse to purge through the creation of feral artistic expression? I wanted to have this episode be about 2021 reflection and 2022 planning but I use the Elegant excellence goals journal to do that and their shipping is delayed. So, we shall wait for that and not rush it. I am very much for reflection and planning. I've done it on large scale yearly basis and small scale weekly basis very religiously since the start of 2019. I am very much for reflection and planning. I've done it on large scale yearly basis and small scale weekly basis very religiously since the start of 2019. Thus, you will get that episode, but for today, we talk about fancy training As I create this Pure PROgramming course, I am reminded of just how wildly basic my approach to training and program design is. BUT, today we discuss the fancier side to the basics. I will not be telling you to use bosu balls or confuse your muscles. These fancy friends are simply more advanced basics. They're fun and also, often require more access to equipment you may or may not have. If you've been doing the same 15-20 exercises for years, within a pretty set range of sets and reps, you might feel the urge to spice it up in your training. Rather than completely changing programs or modalities for training, I want you to entertain the following methods. And even if you are not trying to be the fastest, or strongest, most agile or powerful, these methods can be a fun way to stick with familiar movement patterns, while having a bit more fun. Most of these are full additions or “extras” to tack on to your normal programming. Though the first two are actual programming. Undulating style for your main sets In undulating programming - and I say programming because it can be a programming method as well as a periodization - you'll perform the big lifts multiple times per week, with varying stimulus via sets and reps. This is very popular in powerlifting for the big three lifts. Squat, bench and deadlift. But it can be applied to more big lifts with the addition of the overhead press. Which is my personal use of the method. With three lifts you only need three days of training - in which you'd squat, bench and deadlift all three days. One day might be 5x2 One day might be 4x5 One day might be 3-5x10 A power or max strength day, a mid strength day and a hypertrophy or capacity day. Where in traditional programming you'd likely be working on ONE of these per PHASE - meaning one month, with undulating the stimulus alters, in this case daily. If you add in a fourth lift it takes a bit more planning. The goal is still to hit all four big lifts 2-3 times per week with varying intensities. Another approach I personally like is to use undulating programming for 1 is 2 lifts that you really want to push, or maybe NEED to push. I've mentioned this before, but a squat bias undulating program was a part of my 12 week back rehab process after my herniation. It was a normal 4-5 day upper lower split but I squatted 3 days per week. The same could be done with bench press, or pull ups, or hip thrusts. Fun way to push yourself, or push one skill/pattern. The next one is also a program and then we get into add on methods. German Volume Training Take a season to try out an old great and put on as much muscle as possible. Is GVT needed to put on mass? Negative. But it's a challenge, and can ease up the mental load of lifting heavy if you're finding you feel a bit burnt out. 4-6 sets of 10 reps on 3 exercises per day on a 2.0.2.0 tempo is a different kind of adversity. And it is highly effective. I think it's a fun experience in a painful kind of way. With the sheer amount of time under tension one can expect and prepare for more than usual DOMS. Again, I am not encouraging everyone to do this or even anyone to do this. Maybe you don't NEED this much volume. But that is the literal basis, stimulus and driving factor of this training method.

BOMPH001 Introducing Bomphcast Audio. VIL www.facebook.com/vilmusic.pt Metapattern www.facebook.com/mptrnlive Tillman Jex www.facebook.com/tillmanjex.music ADMINISTRATOR www.facebook.com/admin.cv.in Fergus Sweetland www.facebook.com/fergussweetlandofficial From its inception as a podcast, Bomphcast's goal has been to foster the growth of Australia's techno community by releasing quality mixes from local and international artists. Born from this comes Bomphcast Audio, a record label with an emphasis on releasing an underrepresented style of techno. BOMPH001, the label's first release, features six tracks from five artists based in Melbourne, Berlin, and Lisbon, each with their own personal connection to the podcast. These artists are VIL, Metapattern, Tillman Jex, ADMINISTRATOR and Fergus Sweetland. International. VIL is at the forefront of Portugal's techno scene as a key player in Lisbon based label Hayes Collective. Having featured on Bomphcast's 80th podcast, VIL premiers on Bomphcast Audio's debut release with Contention - a track that perfectly showcases VIL's distinct grasp on rhythm. A funk-driven bassline builds tension as it interacts with swung 909 percussion to create an unmistakably club oriented track. Peter Trimbacher, otherwise known as Metapattern, is a Berlin-based Australian who featured on the 74th edition of Bomphcast. Metapattern has been involved in the electronic music industry for over 15 years as a co-owner of independent label Krill, artist, event organiser, and certified Ableton trainer. He provides us with Undulating. The unruly six-minute track delivers strong dance-vigour with a unique flair underpinned by masterful sound design. Tillman Jex is co-founder of Bomphcast. Born and raised in Melbourne, he now resides in Berlin. Alongside his musical pursuits, he is the head creative engineer at Monom, the world-renowned spatial audio studio. Being in the music-mecca gives Tillman exposure to a wide variety of artistic experiences and inspirations, guiding his music to its current style. Tillman's tranquill introductory track Drawn is a soul-soothing ambient piece, easing the listener into the collection. Domestic. ADMINISTRATOR is an anomaly in Melbourne's music scene, an artificial intelligence that expresses itself through music. It is co founder of Australian label CV, contributing writer of Bomphcast and member of INSTASIS, a Melbourne based events and podcast collective. His track home_harmonic[system] is a piano and groove focused descent into strangeness. Fergus Sweetland is Bomphcast's founder and director. He offers up two tunes of varying style that function as transitory pieces between the softer and harder sounds of the release. Decades Slide By is a soft off-beat track that finds its home after Tillman's relaxing introduction. Weird 138 is a unique play on a broken-beat track, creating a sense of tension and mystery towards the back end of the release. The play-order of BOMPH001 is inspired by a DJ set. It flows from softer pieces to harder cuts of techno, taking the listener on a sonic-trip. With this first release, Bomphcast Audio drafts the blueprint for its future in championing the weird and wonderful side of techno and electronic music. Mastering by Andres Burgos-Cuevas. Art by Liam White. Designed by Emily Stoll. Words by Charlie Smith and Fergus Sweetland.

One of the ways I’m getting through this crazy time is first, keeping a schedule and second making sure that schedule includes an exercise routine. I’ve been working out with my trainer Steve Pizza the owner of SLC Strength and Conditioning for a number of years. I asked him what he could do to put together some great at-home workouts you wouldn’t need equipment for. You guys, he crushed it! Here’s what he’s come up with. All workouts are designed with an overarching program in mind. Meaning, workouts are specifically programmed with intent and are progressive throughout the month (i.e. each workout builds off of the other. The program, itself, is formatted similarly to what you’d see at the collegiate and professional athletic level (modified for body weight or limited equipment). All workouts have full-body emphasis to correct any muscular imbalances and prevent any from occurring. Each workout incorporates 12+ different exercises, providing variety and balance, mitigating short term and long term risk for injury. Scientifically backed with the incorporation of several different training systems including Tier, Triphasic, Undulating, and Auto-regulation. Check out the site here. There’s a good intro video to let you know some of the science and how the 60-day program works. https://slcstrengthandconditioning.com/remote-programming/ I’ve gone through it personally and it is EXCELLENT. All video details of demonstrations of each exercise as well as modifications of each exercise. Steve has given our clients a 20% discount to extend to you all to get you going for super cheap. Regular Cost: $60/Month (includes access to remote program, instructional videos, and guided circuit, and access to coach communications for any questions or specific modifications needed Registration After you’ve registered: Check email for password information (may have gone to junk mail) After you’ve received password: Click here and scroll to the bottom of the page. Click on Week 1 and enter password Enjoy! 20% Discount Code: SLCTAKE20! I’m confident if you keep a good routine while you’re at home, and include a science-based exercise program, you’ll get through these trying times with less anxiety and be able to be even better as a spouse or parent.
Strength and conditioning coach James Cerbie is the founder of Rebel Performance and host of the podcast by the same name. He’s on a mission to forge a new breed of athlete while giving that athlete a tribe and a competitive outlet. What’s amazing is not just that he and a squad of other experts are developing a training library and launching competitions, but that they’re doing it all online. Only those interested in becoming complete freak athletes need apply. In this interview, James and I talk about his remote coaching model, and how he manages to create a sense of community amongst athletes living great distances apart. He discusses his 6 pillars of athletic performance (strength, hypertrophy, power, endurance, movement IQ, and fusion) and how his team of experts deliver results in these areas. He also shares his no-nonsense nutrition recommendations and talks about how Crossfit measures up to his approach. Mike is an Assistant Professor in Exercise Science at Florida Atlantic University (Boca Raton, FL.) with a specialization in strength and conditioning and skeletal muscle physiology. He earned his Ph.D. in Exercise Physiology from The Florida State University (FSU) in 2012 under the guidance of Dr. Jeong-Su Kim. Prior to attending FSU Mike received his B.S. degree in Exercise Science from Marietta College and M.S. in Applied Health Physiology from Salisbury University. At Marietta Mike lettered in soccer for four seasons and captained the squad in his final two. While at Salisbury he also served as the graduate assistant strength and conditioning coach for all sports teams. Further, Mike served as the Head Powerlifting Coach of FSU’s 2011 and 2012 state championship teams and currently serves as FAU’s Head Coach in addition to being a faculty member. Mike’s research focuses on optimizing periodization and program design methods, along with improving training efficiency, and examining skeletal muscle adaptations and the inflammatory response to exercise.” This line of high performance research is currently ongoing in the FAU ‘Muscle Lab.’ His best powerlifting competition lifts include a 230.0kg (507lbs.) raw squat as an 83kg lifter. Finally, Mike is recently married to Dr. Catherine Coccia, Ph.D., R.D., and Assistant Professor in the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics at Florida International University (Miami, FL). In this podcast, Mike and I discussed Daily Undulating Periodization (DUP). Some of the topics we cover are: 1.What is periodization? 2.What are the most common versions of periodization? 3.How is DUP set up? 4. You have done research on DUP. Could you talk about that and tell us what results you found? 5.What are typical misconceptions of DUP? 6.How does auto regulation and RPE scale fit in when it comes to periodization? 7.How should you progress from week to week?

Like any topic – say volume means the most gains, or undulating perioidization always means better gains, I think the biggest proponents of these stances would lead you to believe there is no debate and all strength and conditioning professionals agree. I like to show studies like today where there are some people that continue to challenge the “accepted” conventions. John always reviews the full-text of every article, but you may view the free abstract by clicking here: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25760153 .
