This week Chris and Jason read and discussed a paper Chris wrote for a strategic studies project about neo-Nazi terror networks and their links to far-right militias in Ukraine. The influx of foreign fighters to Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian invasion of 2022 has outpaced US intel and law enforcement agencies' ability to monitor potential radicals going to and coming from Ukraine. Far-right extremists have been drawn to the conflict in Ukraine since 2014 due to affiliated organizations that belong to a web of loosely related violent neo-fascist organizations. Several affiliated extremists have been apprehended planning terror attacks and other acts of violence. "It's not the side effects from the cocaine. I'm thinking that it must be love" David Bowie struggled a bit in the late 80's/90's, in a comparative sense, after the stratospheric success of Let's Dance with the MTV generation. In the tour he is partnered with King Crimson/Zappa alum Adrian Belew, with whom Bowie had recorded Pretty Pink Rose (a minor hit and an awesome song). On July 23, 1990 the band played Hartford, CT. This is the show we're listening to in this bonus episode. I play Ashes to Ashes, Pretty Pink Rose, & Station to Station. It's a very high energy gig and Belew's signature sound really suits the material.

Full Rig Info: https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/rig-rundown/adrian-belew-2024Visit Eastside Music Supply: https://eastsidemusicsupply.com/Adrian Belew is one of the most inventive guitarists of the past half-century—an incandescent player and songwriter who has a vast menagerie of tones and sounds at his command. You've heard him with King Crimson, Talking Heads, David Bowie, and Frank Zappa, among others, and with his pop band the Bears and on his solo recordings and tours. This fall, Adrian is following dates with the Talking Heads-fueled Remain in Light tour, which he co-led with Heads keyboardist and guitarist Jerry Harrison, with the BEAT Tour—a run drawing on his recordings with King Crimson in the '80s: the albums Discipline, Beat, and Three of a Perfect Pair. Of course, this is just a small—but extremely potent and influential—portion of his 30-year collaboration with Crimson founder Robert Fripp, who has given BEAT his blessing. But putting this repertoire in the hands of Belew, fellow Crimson alum and super-bassist Tony Levin, the incendiary Steve Vai (playing the guitar role of Fripp), and the Earth-shaking drummer Danny Carey from Tool promises magical performances. It's also one of the year's most-anticipated tours. As I write this, Belew, Levin, Vai, and Carey are rehearsing on the West Coast, and by the time this video posts, they will have played their first BEAT dates. So, word is likely to have spread that Belew has brought some crucial pieces of gear he played with '80s Crimson back into play. But here, you'll get a close up look and listen as Premier Guitar joins Adrian—with tech Blair White of Nashville's Eastside Music Supply—at his mid-Tennessee home for a pre-tour Rig Rundown. On this week's episode of Rooted Recovery Stories, Patrick sits down with good friend and singer songwriter Cody Belew! Blending raw emotion with Southern stomp, Cody Belew offers a unique point of view on faith and love – both of which he approaches with fearless honesty. Coming off PRIDE week, Cody and Patrick discuss the embodiment of community and the importance of always knowing your neighbors. Cody shares his experience growing up gay in the Church and how it has impacted his religious journey. He dives into the inspiration behind his music and the wisdom he's learned in not dimming your light for others. Visit https://www.CodyBelew.com/ to get tickets, find Cody's new releases and more! Cody's first full-length record I Did It For Love will release on September 20th - see more about his inspiration for the album below! His next single is titled "Long, Long Row" and will be out on July 19th! The most recent single, "Horseshoes & Hand Grenades," released in May. Cody made a splash at this year's CMT Awards. Attaching our release, which you'll also note links to all of his social accounts/artist profiles! Assembling a mix of candid originals and well-loved classics by artists who inspired him, Cody Belew released his self-titled debut EP in early 2022 via Visionary Media. That same year had Belew reimagining the Brooks & Dunn classic “Neon Moon '' with Grammy Award-winning producer, Dave Audé, which recently surpassed three million Spotify streams. Belew kicked off 2023 as a member of CMT's coveted “Listen Up” program, which counts Kacey Musgraves, Thomas Rhett, and Marren Morris among its alumni, and saw the release of his single “Charlene,” which chronicled his experienced religious trauma as a Southern Baptist within the LGBTQ+ community. His star is rapidly rising with the recent release of the title track “I Did It For Love'' from his debut album due out later this year. A long-time Nashville resident, Cody recently completed a yearlong, sold-out residency at the city's famed Lipstick Lounge and wowed crowds at the new hotspot The Eighth Room with his impassioned vocals, deft songwriting, and undeniable stage presence. Cody has been highlighted in WWD and Vanity Fair for his distinctive fashion sense and profiled by NBC and Billboard. Cody's Inspiration for I Did It For Love: “Until the day I moved away from home, pointing my truck toward Nashville with all my belongings in tow, getting to Music City had been my singular mission. Ten years in, and I found myself writing about home, and family ties, and what sacrifices it took to get here. I wrote this with arenas in mind. I have christened this sound ‘Southern Glam Rock' as I find myself embodying that intersection- those two truths. We would love to hear from you! In 1974, in the wake of the release of their magnum opus, Red, Robert Fripp made the decree "King Crimson is completely over. For ever and ever." And he meant it... for a time. For the next few years, he left the music industry completely to focus on himself and his spirituality, but he wouldn't be out for long. In the late 70s into 1980, Fripp was pulled back into the fold, laying down guitar work for legends such as David Bowie, Peter Gabriel, and Daryl Hall. Finally, the need to be in a group resurfaced, and he enlisted Adrien Belew (who had just come off the "Remain in Light" tour) and Tony Levin (a master of the Chapman Stick) to join himself and Bill Bruford in a New Wave band calling itself Discipline. It wasn't very long before it became apparent that this grouping was the next incarnation of King Crimson, and in 1981, they wowed the rock world with a completely new sound for the band. It was New Wave, but still with all the Prog polyrhythms that defined them in the past. Whatever you think of this point in their discography, it's clear they were masters of reinvention. Today we're joined once again by Adam Elk from The Mommyheads!!! They are finally touring the midwest THIS WEEKEND and you should come out and see them! Tour dates linked belew. This week my good friend and native Coloradan Kathleen Belew drops in to talk about the movie that etched the word "wolverines" into our lives forever: Red Dawn. We talk about how Red Dawn depicts Cold War fears on the big screen, and how it has been perceived in the *checks notes* forty years since its release. As usual, Kathleen and I talk about where to get the best food in Colorado, skiing, and god knows what else. This is a pod you've been asking for. I hope you like it.About our guest:Kathleen Belew is a historian, author, and teacher. She specializes in the history of the present. She spent ten years researching and writing her first book, Bring the War Home: The White Power Movement and Paramilitary America (Harvard, 2018, paperback 2019). In it, she explores how white power activists created a social movement through a common story about betrayal by the government, war, and its weapons, uniforms, and technologies. By uniting Ku Klux Klan, neo-Nazi, skinhead, and other groups, the movement mobilized and carried out escalating acts of violence that reached a crescendo in the 1995 bombing of Oklahoma City. This movement was never adequately confronted, and remains a threat to American democracy. Her next book, Home at the End of the World, illuminates our era of apocalypse through a history focused on her native Colorado where, in the 1990s, high-profile kidnappings and murders, right-wing religious ideology, and a mass shooting exposed rents in America's social fabric, and dramatically changed our relationship with place, violence, and politics (Random House).Belew has spoken about Bring the War Home in a wide variety of places, including The Rachel Maddow Show, The Last Word With Lawrence O'Donnell, AC 360 with Anderson Cooper, Frontline, Fresh Air, and All Things Considered. Her work has featured prominently in documentaries such as Homegrown Hate: The War Among Us (ABC) and Documenting Hate: New American Nazis (Frontline). Belew is an Associate Professor of History at Northwestern University. She earned tenure at the University of Chicago in 2021, where she spent seven years. Her research has received the support of the Chauncey and Marion Deering McCormick Foundation, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and the Jacob K. Javits Foundation. Belew earned her BA in the Comparative History of Ideas from the University of Washington, where she was named Dean's Medalist in the Humanities. She earned a doctorate in American Studies from Yale University.

One band that we wish would preform together againOriginal Talking Heads member Jerry Harrison and noted touring member Adrian Belew have announced that they will bring their popular ‘Remain In Light' concert on the road throughout the US this winter, in celebration of the band's iconic 1980 record. When Adrian Belew was brought in to record his mind-bending guitar solos on what became Taking Heads' landmark 1980 album Remain in Light, he felt an unprecedented amount of freedom. He was presented not with almost-finished songs but unstructured grooves that felt like vast open spaces for him to color in. That he did, brilliantly, and Belew and Jerry Harrison of Talking Heads are now revisiting this album with a live tour. Of course, Belew's resume covers a lot more ground, including guitar wizardry with Frank Zappa, David Bowie, Paul Simon and Nine Inch Nails, his stint as lead singer/songwriter of King Crimson and his own solo career. How did each of these collaborations stretch him? And was he really asked to replace David Byrne in Talking Heads?
Sponsored by Monkton Guitars, this episode of Mile High Stash features Adrian Belew, whose unique, brilliant guitar work is featured on albums by David Bowie, Talking Heads, Paul Simon, Frank Zappa, Nine Inch Nails, King Crimson and more. Mr. Belew famously played on the Talking Heads' seminal "Remain in Light" album, and he's embarking on a "Remain in Light" tour with the Talking Heads' Jerry Harrison and Turkuaz.

Wondering how those energy healings affected the ladies from our first pod healing? Julie Belew joins me to talk about some of the ways in which her energy pathways are opening up and some cool things that have happened to her since our session. Like many of us, she was hoping to quickly graduate from "Earth School" so she can sit back and enjoy the rest of the journey through life. But she says she only woke up about a year ago to start practicing meditation and improving her mindset. Julie learns that healing with energy is a process and doesn't happen overnight. She finds out how to embrace loving and accepting herself with the help of EFT and more great advice from Amy. She's found a way to tell her story to the world through podcasting to help process her past traumas. She is encouraging others to tell their stories too, in order to help normalize experiences such as sexual assault and to end the shame that can accompany those events.
