On today's episode, we chat with Alisa Childers! Alisa was born in the San Fernando Valley, CA to Karen and her husband, pioneer Christian artist, Chuck Girard. While still a young woman in the late 1990s, Alisa and two friends formed the group, ZOEgirl who signed with Sparrow Records in 1999. ZOEgirl went on to become one of the fastest selling debut artists in the label's history, even winning the New Artists of the Year at the 2002 GMA Dove Awards. After seven years together, the group amicably split and remain friends. Today, Alisa is a wife, mom, an author and speaker and writes a popular apologetics blog for doubting Christians and honest skeptics. Her first book, “Another Gospel? A Lifelong Christian Seeks Truth in Response to Progressive Christianity” was released in October 2020 and describes Alisa's journey over the last several years as she wrestled with questions that really strike at the heart of what it means to be a Biblical or historic Christian. Her new book, 'The Deconstruction of Christianity', hits shelves January 30th. In this seminal book, Alisa Childers, author of Another Gospel?, and Tim Barnett, creator of Red Pen Logic, will help you understand what deconstruction is, where it comes from, why it is compelling to some, and how it disorients the lives of so many. You will be able to think through the main issues around faith deconstruction and explore wise and loving ways to respond from a biblical worldview. alisachilders.com @alisachilders christianmusicguys.com @christianmusicguys --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/christianmusicguys/message
Eternal Families, Mountains To Climb - Gaining Power To Overcome Challenges In Life and Song- Good Good Father. ACU Sunday Series. Eternal Families Mountains To Climb - Gaining Power To Overcome Challenges In Life. Eternal Families President Henry B. Finding faith in the Lord Jesus Christ will help us have the power to endure and overcome challenges in life. ""Many of you are now passing through physical, mental, and emotional trials that could cause you to cry out, 'When I've tried all my life to be good, why has this happened to me?' Now I wish to encourage those who in the midst of hard trials who feel their faith may be fading under the onslaught of troubles. There seems to me no better answer to the question of why trials come, and what we are to do, than the words of the Lord Himself, who passed through trials for us more terrible than we can imagine. You may have seen the need for that foundation as I have, at the bedside of someone ready to give up the fight to endure to the end. If the foundation of faith is not embedded in our hearts, the power to endure will crumble. [Mother yelling to her son] Moroni, the son of Mormon in the Book of Mormon told us how. He teaches the simple and sweet truth that acting on even a twig of faith allows God to grow it. That particle of faith -most precious- which you should protect, and use to whatever extent you can, is faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. You and I have faith, that the way to rise through and above trials, is to believe that there is a Balm in Gilead, and that the Lord has promised, 'I will not forsake thee. 'Curing does not come automatically through the passage of time, but it does take time. Getting older does not do it alone, it is serving God and others persistently with full heart and soul that turns testimony of truth into unbreakable spiritual strength. If we have faith in Jesus Christ, the hardest, as well as the easiest of times in life can be a blessing. In all conditions all we can choose the right with the guidance of the spirit. We have the gospel of Jesus Christ shape and guide our lives if we choose it. We never need to feel that we are alone or unloved in the Lord's service because we never are. We can feel the love of God. The Savior has promised angels are on our left and on our right to bear us up, and He always keeps His word. His love is unfailing I so testify, in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen. This is an edited version of this selection. For the Strength of Youth To help you find the Way and to help you make Christ's doctrine the guiding influence in your life, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has prepared a new resource, a revised version of For the Strength of Youth. For over 50 years, For the Strength of Youth has been a guide for generations of Latter-day Saint youth. I always keep a copy in my pocket, and I share it with people who are curious about our standards. It has been updated and refreshed to better cope with the challenges and temptations of our day. The new version of For the Strength of Youth is available online in 50 different languages and will also be available in print. It will be a significant help for making choices in your life. Please embrace it as your own and share it with your friends. This new version of For the Strength of Youth is subtitled A Guide for Making Choices. To be very clear, the best guide you can possibly have for making choices is Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is the strength of youth. So the purpose of For the Strength of Youth is to point you to Him. It teaches you eternal truths of His restored gospel—truths about who you are, who He is, and what you can accomplish with His strength. It teaches you how to make righteous choices based on those eternal truths.13 It's also important to know what For the Strength of Youth does not do. It doesn't make decisions for you. It doesn't give you a “yes” or “no” about every choice you might ever face. For the Strength of Youth focuses on the foundation for your choices. It focuses on values, principles, and doctrine instead of every specific behavior. The Lord, through His prophets, has always been guiding us in that direction. He is pleading with us to “increase [our] spiritual capacity to receive revelation.”14 He is inviting us to “hear Him.”15 He is calling us to follow Him in higher and holier ways.16 And we are learning in a similar way every week in Come, Follow Me. What's up, dudes? It makes sense that a Christian music record label would release a version of the Christmas Story, right? Yup. Sparrow Records, founded in 1976 by Billy Ray Hearn, then A&R director at Myrrh Records, did exactly that! In 1987, Sparrow released a promotional album to radio stations containing several of their biggest artists narrating the Nativity story. The B-side contained some Christmas IDs of these stars wishing us all a Merry Christmas. The Christmas Story narration is done in this order: Michael Card is up first, followed by Scott Wesley Brown, Margaret Becker, Steve Camp, and Richard Souther. Michael Card then takes it up again, this time followed by Steven Curtis Chapman, Geoff Moore, Rick Florian of White Heart, Deniece Williams, and Steve Green. The musical selections were taken from Steve Green's album Joy To The World! The Scripture reading was taken from The New International Version translation.Steven Curtis Chapman? Check. The guys from White Heart? Yup. Deniece Williams?!? Well, let's hear it for the voice! So grab your donkey, knock on all the doors to the town's inns, and remember what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown, as the Sparrow artists narrate the Christmas Story!Check us out on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Totally Rad Christmas Mall & Arcade, Teepublic.com, or TotallyRadChristmas.com! Later, dudes!

God can walk us through anything. In Cheri Keaggy's case it was the death of a parent. This episode makes me ask, how would I walk through a tragedy like that? Hopefully, as Cheri did, I would walk through it with scripture, prayer, and faith. Her testimony on how God brought the right Word at the right time is an important reminder for all of us. We limit how much the Holy Spirit can speak to us if we don't really know our Bible. In addition to comforting us during times of trials, like in Cheri's case, she also references the importance of knowing the Word of God in times of celebration. These two emotions of joy and pain are both a blessing when they are partnered with scripture and God's grace. For Cheri, those scriptures are also a guiding light in her songwriting process. This episode goes from grief to grace and we're excited to share it with our worship tribe. She has released nine albums; garnered nine #1 singles; and was honored with a Dove Award in 1998 for Special Event Album of the Year for God With Us: A Celebration of Christmas Carols and Classics. Her signature songs include “My Faith Will Stay,” “Make My Life An Altar,” “Open My Heart” and “You, Oh Lord, Are My Refuge,” while her “In Remembrance Of Me” and “There Is Joy In The Lord” have been sung in churches around the globe. His music career started in 1992, with the release of Norman Hutchins by Sparrow Records, and they would also release 1993's, Don't Stop Praying. Yet, these both failed to chart and were the only two releases with the label. He caught success, when he joined JDI Records in 1999, and they released his third album, Nobody But You, and this was his Billboard magazine chart debut release on the Gospel Albums chart. He subsequent albums with the label, saw success on that same chart, and those were, Battlefield in 1999, Emmanuel in 2001; however, one album failed to chart, Battlefield: The Sermon released in 2002.He would then sign to IR Records, for the releases of Spontaneous Praise, Vol. 1 in 2008, 2009's God Is Faithful, If You Didn't Know...Now You Know in 2011, and 2013's Hosanna, which all of them charted on the Gospel Albums chart. He has received eight Dove Award nominations and eight Stellar Award nominations, along with Grammy Awards nominations.
In this episode Jason Davis opens up about his experience as a songwriter and how he got a #1 Billboard charting song before he even realised that it was something maybe he should look at. This honor is given annually to individuals whose selfless service as entertainers perpetuates the legacy of the late Bob Hope. Recorded July 1, 2021 Episode Sponsored by: Surfshark and Passport America. From WIKIPEDIA: Michael James Peterson (born August 7, 1959) is an American country music artist. He made his debut on the country music scene in 1997 with his self-titled debut album, which produced five Top 40 hits on Billboards Hot Country Singles & Tracks, including the Number One hit "From Here to Eternity". Peterson's second album, 1999's Being Human, produced two more chart singles, and a third album, 2004's Modern Man, was issued only in Europe. Peterson also made a cameo appearance on an episode of Walker, Texas Ranger. After attending high school at Richland High School in Richland, WA, Peterson later earned a football scholarship to Pacific Lutheran University, where he won a national championship. One of his teammates, Brad Westering, was also working as a producer for Deniece Williams at the time. Through Westering, Peterson got the opportunity to write songs for Williams, as well as gospel headliners The Imperials. This all led to the production of Peterson's first release, "Michael Peterson", a collection of contemporary Christian songs, on Sparrow Records in 1986. Eventually, Peterson traveled to Nashville, Tennessee where he started working as a professional songwriter, collaborating with other writers such as Josh Leo and Robert Ellis Orrall. Orrall suggested that Peterson sign to a recording contract, and in December 1996, Peterson was signed to Reprise Records, a division of the Warner Music Group. His debut single, "Drink, Swear, Steal & Lie", was released that year, charting at No. 3 on the Billboard country charts and No. 86 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was the lead-off single to Peterson's self-titled debut album (not to be confused with the Christian album of the same name from 1986), which also produced four more chart singles. The second one, "From Here to Eternity", became Peterson's first and only Number One hit, while "Too Good to Be True" reached No. 8. Following it were "When the Bartender Cries" at No. 37 and "By the Book" at No. 19. The album was certified gold by the RIAA for shipping 500,000 copies in the U.S. Also in 1997, Peterson was named Male Artist of the Year by Billboard. In 1998, Peterson appeared on Jenny Simpson's 1998 self-titled album, singing duet vocals on "Grow Young with You". Peterson made a guest appearance on a 1998 episode of Walker, Texas Ranger called "Eyes of a Ranger." Peterson released his second album, Being Human, in 1999.[3] Its lead-off single, "Somethin' 'bout a Sunday", failed to reach top 40, and "Sure Feels Real Good" peaked at No. 39. Also in 1999, Peterson co-wrote the title track to Travis Tritt's album No More Looking over My Shoulder, which was released as a single. After a Super Hits album for the label, Peterson exited Warner Music Group. After his departure from Warner, Peterson signed to Monument Records Nashville. His third studio album, Modern Man, was to have been released in 2002 for the label. Although its title track and "Lesson in Goodbye" both entered the country charts (with the former being the highest-debuting single of his career), the album itself was not issued in the US due to a restructuring of the label's parent company. AGR, a European record label, acquired the album and issued it in Europe in 2004. Six singles were released from it in Europe, including Peterson's own rendition of "No More Looking over My Shoulder." Also included on the album was the track "Right About Now", which Ty Herndon later released from his 2007 album of the same name. Peterson's songs have been covered by a number of artists. Though his last charting song was in 2002, he continues to release albums and performs at military benefits. https://www.facebook.com/hotcountrypodcast https://www.hotcountrypodcast.com https://www.facebook.com/OfficialChrisMcKay

Sparrow Records took a chance on Adam LaClave and his group 'Earthsuit' when they signed them to a record deal. There was nothing that sounded like Earthsuit on the label and hardly anything else within all of Christian music which compared. Adam was ahead of his time, trying to make epic alternative music while struggling with his own views on Spirituality as well as his Sexual Orientation. What followed was a fascinating journey into self-discovery.What do you do when you want to make music which feels true to you, but you're constantly reminded you're part of a "Christian" label? This week I’m talking with my friend Chad Segura who is the Vice President of Publishing at Centricity Music in Franklin, TN. He’s been a publisher in the Christian music, country music and sync licensing markets for two decades. We are discussing the differences between marketing and publicity, details about what music publishing is and what Centricity Music Publishing is looking for when they sign new staff writers to their roster. Plus, the importance of internships if you are wanting to work for a publishing company and the baseline component to be successful in any area of the music industry.Show Notes:Sponsors: Edenbrooke Productions - We offer consulting services and are offering listeners a 1-hour introductory special. To request more info on consulting services, email Marty at contact@johnmartinkeith.com. Talking Points:*VP of Music Publishing for Centricity Music.*I Played music growing up and went to Belmont as a vocal performance major and realized during orientation week that I didn’t like the technical aspect of what that would require so I transferred to the music business program.*I went from performance focused to business focused which turned out to be the perfect fit for me.*I did an internship in publishing and an internship in marketing for a label.*The publishing internship was not great for me. I did the work that needed to be done but really didn’t learn a lot.*The people at the record label internship let me speak into ideas and giving me a voice into marketing campaigns and including me in business lunches when it made sense.*You should always be learning and getting new experiences in an internship. Not only getting to work on projects and have input but also getting to interact with people.*After college I transitioned from the internship into a full time position at Sparrow Records which had been bought by EMI Christian Music Group.*My first job was in publicity which is promoting those artists to outside entities that can let the consumer know about them. Magazines, blogs, social media, etc.*After a year my boss moved to marketing and allowed me to move with her which was letting the consumer know about the product. CDs, tapes, streaming, etc.*EMI was creating a publishing role called “catalog development manager” that I got hired for which was getting into the song catalog and figuring out ways to monetize that.*I’m passionate about great songs and songwriters and helping their songs find homes and outlets and streams of revenue.*At Centricity Publishing we work with two distinct groups of writers: Staff writers that write for other people and artist writers that write for their own artistry.*My role is to head up the publishing company and oversee all aspects of the business.*Publishing is broken up into two parts: The creative side and the administrative side.*The creative side is everything with the writers and songs finding opportunities for them and generating revenue, etc.*The administrative side is all the details that have to happen in order for this to not just be a hobby.*If nobody’s tracking it, registering it, licensing it, collecting revenue, etc. then we don’t have a business.*We are trying to find talent, find songs.*We have writers that are signed to us (staff or artist), but we also do single song agreements where we identify a song that we think we can help it find a place.*Regarding single songs contracts we sign that song because we usually become aware of it*We don’t take songs that people randomly send us mainly for legal reasons. It can be dangerous to accept unsolicited music which is something we didn’t ask for directly from someone.*Most likely you know someone that knows a publisher, so have them listen to it and see if they can send it for you if they believe in it.*It’s way better for us to get it from a trusted source where they can vet it.*Be affiliated with a PRO - BMI, ASCAP or SESAC*They are people that publishers trust and can be an advocate for you and they can send to us if they think it is a good song. They are putting their reputation on the line.*Sometimes we do a sync writers event where we invite unsigned writers along with our staff writers and some music supervisors to work on sync songs together with the understanding that if they do it, then it will be under a single song contract during the event.*We also do the same thing for worship retreats.*Finding staff writers is similar in the sense that we hear somebody is good. Sometimes its a person we known for years and they are coming out of a publishing deal and we see an opportunity to work with them exclusively. But, more often than not, we decide to work with someone exclusively after we have done a few single song contracts. Or we keep hearing about a writer from other people or our writers keep writing with a certain person and anything they do together seems great.*Artist writers are their own thing. They are writing almost exclusively for their own artistry and that’s it’s own very specific thing.*Staff writers each have specific skill sets and leanings towards different genres or strengths so for us we are very intentional about that. Knowing how many producer/writers we need and are they different enough from each other to where they are not stepping on each other.*In some cases you need multiple’s of one thing because there isn’t enough to go around.*How many great lyricists do we have and people who are great at concepts or melodically strong.*It’s knowing that balance of how much can we physically work with and also do they fit our roster.*Most importantly for me is do I love this person. I want to see them win. Do they fit what we do and our culture and our work style and we think we can enhance what they do.*They are plenty of people I love but either we don’t have room or they don’t fit what we do.*It’s very relational for us.*The bar though is amazing talent. That’s the baseline.*We wouldn’t be talking if we didn’t think there was something here in it’s rawest form was pretty special.*Then we have to figure if and how they fit into what we do and do we fit them.*I’m not quick to rush into longterm deals with anybody.*When we enter into a deal with somebody, whatever the term is, my hope is always when the end of that term is done we are trying to figure out how to do the next one.*the hope is that it will be a long term thing for years and years and everyone will be better for having partnered together.*Some writers we pay a salary upfront and some we don’t. They all need to be bi-vocational.*Writers are paid advances on their future royalties which they have to pay back if they song makes money.*It’s the best loan you’ll ever get because you don’t have to pay it back if they song never makes money.*Advances are much less than they used to be. Getting an advance or not is negotiable. Some writers want one and some don’t.*If you get paid an advance for a long time and something big happens and you get cut and generates a decent amount of money, when that comes in you’ve basically already gotten that money so you’re just digging out of the whole that you have. Sometimes that is not as satisfying for people because it feels like your catching up to where I am now and you’ve already spent that money.*Some people need that upfront, regular payment for budgeting purposes, etc.*A lot of our writers are doing other things as well. Some are producer for major labels and independently, some are teachers, etc. to create multiple streams of income.*If you want to work for a publishing company, it’s to be in the cities where they are doing that.*You need to be willing to learn and try to get your foot in the door.*If you’re not enrolled in school, it’s harder to get internships especially at the bigger companies because of how they are set up.*Smaller companies like ours you do not have to be school in to get an internship, so find places to learn and pour in and get a job so you can pay for life while you are trying to do that.*Internships are one of the best ways to learn the thing and get your foot in the door and let people know who you are.*As a writer - write!*If you want to be professional writer, you need to already be a writer. Develop that craft, hone it, know how to write on your own and with others.*Always try to write with people who are better than you.*The way you get on our radar is by delivering great music through a trusted source if you don’t know us directly and if you do, building that relationship.*Be excellent at what you’re doing.*I am always looking for people that are phenomenal talent.*Work ethic and ability to do what needs to be done and have a great attitude.*Be teachable.*www.centricitymusic.com Chad Segura began his career at Sparrow Records in 1996, after graduating from Belmont University, in Nashville, TN. His first role was in the publicity department, followed by a stint on the artist development team. And while he enjoyed aspects of both, it wasn’t until 1998 when he joined the publishing team at EMI Christian Music Publishing (now Capitol CMG Publishing), that he found his true passion for working with songs and songwriters. After several years, at EMI, he then went on to head the publishing division of competitor, Word Entertainment, for several more, before starting and running his own publishing company, Meld Music, in partnership with Fair Trade Services. In the summer of 2015, Chad made the move to Centricity Music, where he currently heads up their publishing division. Over the course of his career, he has had the pleasure of working with a “who’s who” list of Christian recording artists, and songwriters, and he’s still as passionate as ever about the work that he gets to do.

BRAVE Worship - For Women in Church Leadership, Music and Songwriting
For twenty years, Ohio native, Matt Hammitt, was the lead singer and songwriter for Dove Award-winning two time Grammy-nominated band Sanctus Real. During that time, the band released eight albums under Sparrow Records, toured internationally and released 14 Top 5 and #1 singles to Christian radio, making the band a household name among Christian music fans worldwide.Authored by Matt, Sanctus Real's most recognized hit, “Lead Me,” has resonated with men, women, and families all over the world. However, what most people don't recognize, is the great irony behind the song itself. "Lead Me," the very song that catapulted the band to the heights of their success, was also the song that would play a major part in Matt's twenty-year career as their front-man coming to an end. As crowds of thousands echoed the words "Don't want to leave them hungry for love, chasing things that I could give up" Matt was deeply convicted that it was time for him to start singing those words less and living them more. Matt made the difficult decision to step away from the band. In February, 2016, Matt played his final show with Sanctus Real. The emotions behind Matt's decision to leave his former band is penned into the opening track of his self-titled album, "Heaven Knows." Throughout the album, Matt takes on the difficulties of stepping out of a familiar and comfortable place to follow Jesus, who often calls us to do difficult things for our ultimate good. Blind trust, or simply put, faith, is a thread that's woven throughout all ten tracks of Matt's new album. Matt has been married to his wife Sarah for sixteen years, and together they have four children. Birthed from his own struggles, one of Matt's greatest passions has become ministering to broken families. In 2010, Matt's son, Bowen, was born with a rare and severe heart disease. Through the pain of caring for a sick child, Matt and Sarah faced some very difficult years of marriage. Out of their experience, Matt and Sarah, started two organizations that mister to families today. Whole Hearts Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides financial, emotional and spiritual support for families of children living with pediatric heart disease. In 2016, Matt and Sarah also launched "Lead Me Live" men's conferences, aimed at encouraging and equipping men to become great spiritual leaders in their home. In 2016, Matt partnered with Full Circle Music and producer Seth Mosley to begin work on a new album which is slated to release in November 2017. “Tears”, the first radio single, broke into the Billboard Christian Airplay Top 50 chart within two weeks of its debut. His current single, “He Always Wins” is a worship anthem that is quickly being sung in churches around the globe. Additionally, Matt is writing a book about the themes of Lead Me and will release in late 2018.

Courage Cast - Faith, Encouragement and Motivation for Today
Sometimes great success brings greater challenges. For twenty years, Ohio native, Matt Hammitt, was the lead singer and songwriter for Dove Award-winning two time Grammy-nominated band Sanctus Real. During that time, the band released eight albums under Sparrow Records, toured internationally and released 14 Top 5 and #1 singles to Christian radio, making the band a household name among Christian music fans worldwide. Authored by Matt, Sanctus Real's most recognized hit, “Lead Me,” has resonated with men, women, and families all over the world. From his Dove Award winning gospel albums to his genre-defining Southern rock anthems and his CMA Award-winning country hits, few artists have left a more indelible mark on America's musical landscape than Charlie Daniels. An outspoken patriot, beloved mentor to young artists and still a road warrior at age 79, Charlie has parlayed his passion for music into a multi-platinum career and a platform to support the military, underprivileged children and others in need. Raised among the longleaf pines of North Carolina, Charlie began his career playing bluegrass music with the Misty Mountain Boys. After moving to Nashville in 1967, he began making a name for himself as a songwriter, session musician and producer. Elvis Presley recorded a tune Charlie co-wrote titled “It Hurts Me,” which was released on the flip side of “Kissin' Cousins.” He played on such landmark albums as Bob Dylan's Nashville Skyline and tried his hand at producing on the Youngbloods' Elephant Mountain and Ride the Wind. His own unique voice as an artist emerged as Charlie recorded his self-titled solo album in 1970 for Capitol Records. Two years later he formed the Charlie Daniels Band and the group scored its first hit with the top ten “Uneasy Rider.” Since then the CDB has populated radio with such memorable hits as “Long Haired Country Boy,” “The South's Gonna Do It Again,” “In America,” “The Legend of Wooley Swamp” and of course, his signature song, “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” which won a Grammy for Best Country Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group in 1979 as well as single of the year at the Country Music Association Awards. The CDB will perform 100 concert dates this year including performances on the Grand Ole Opry. The band's latest release, "Off the Grid - Doin' It Dylan," features 10 Bob Dylan songs by the CDB, and is their first CDB studio release since 2007. “I love what I do,” says Charlie of his 50-plus years in the music business. “I look forward to entertaining people. When show time gets here, I'm ready to go, ready to go play for them. It's a labor of love. I just thank God I make a living at what I enjoy doing.”-2- Whether performing in the hit 80s movie Urban Cowboy, singing on Easter Sunday at his local church or leading an all-star cast at one of his famed Volunteer Jams, Charlie just exudes joy whenever he steps on stage and he's always been quick to provide a platform for other artists to shine. In 1974 he invited some friends to join him at Nashville's War Memorial Auditorium for an all-star concert he dubbed The Volunteer Jam. The event continued for years and was broadcast in the U.S. and internationally. Over the years, the Jam featured a diverse line up that included Willie Nelson, Ted Nugent, Roy Acuff, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Crystal Gayle, James Brown, Emmylou Harris, Amy Grant, George Thorogood, Kris Kristofferson, Little Richard, Tammy Wynette, Alabama, Oak Ridge Boys, B. B. King and the Allman Brothers. As diverse as his live shows have always been, his discography has also reflected Charlie's love of multiple genres. In 1994 he released his first Christian album, The Door, on Sparrow Records. The album won the Gospel Music Association's Dove Award for Best Country Album and “Two Out of Three” was named video of the year by the Christian Country Music Association. In 1997, Sony Wonder released Charlie's first children's album, “By The Light of The Moon: Campfire Songs and Cowboy Tunes'. An astute businessman as well as talented musician, Charlie launched Blue Hat Records in 1997 with his longtime personal manager David Corlew. Over the past 15 years, the label has released such memorable albums as Blues Hat, Tailgate Party, Road Dogs, Fiddle Fire: 25 Years of the Charlie Daniels Band and his first bluegrass album 2005's Songs From the Longleaf Pines and 2007's album Deuces, featuring duets with Brad Paisley, Gretchen Wilson, Bonnie Bramlett, Travis Tritt, Dolly Parton, Vince Gill,...

In Episode 62, Brenton and Bryant take a reverse look into the life of artist, songwriter, and producer, Audrey Assad. Audrey is the daughter of a Syrian refugee, an author, speaker, producer, and critically lauded songwriter and musician. She releases music she calls “soundtracks for prayer” on the label Fortunate Fall Records, which she co-owns with her husband. She is also one half of the pop band LEVV, whose debut EP peeked at #17 on the iTunes Alternative chart. Her first solo album was released by Sparrow Records and was awarded the iTunes Christian Breakthrough Album of the Year in 2010 as she went on to be nominated for two Dove Awards. That same year, she sang her song “Winter Snow” on Chris Tomlin’s certified Gold record “Glory in the Highest.” In 2013, Audrey set out on her own. Thanks to a devoted and tight-knit fanbase, she raised over $40,000 in 50 hours for an independent record on Kickstarter. The resulting album, Fortunate Fall, received many accolades and quickly became a fan favorite- with songs such as “I Shall Not Want” being featured in the New York Times by David Brooks. In 2014, Audrey released an EP, Death, Be Not Proud, which reflected on her recent encounters with loss and suffering- including her husband’s journey through cancer and chemotherapy. The album released just a few weeks after the birth of her first son. In the time since, Audrey has spoken about art, faith, womanhood, justice, and, most notably, pornography addiction at Catholic and Evangelical events such as Q Ideas, Focus Conferences, and more. She has performed many solo worship events, as well as at the IHOP One Thing conference with Francis Chan speaking, Mass at St Patrick’s Cathedral with Timothy Cardinal Dolan presiding, and alongside Matt Maher during the Papal Event “World Meeting of Families.” She has also written reflective and devotional entries for the likes of Christianity Today, the Magnificat, Blessed is She, and more. In 2016, Audrey is releasing a collection of hymns and original songs called Inheritance. She has approached this collection of songs with a sense of delicate appreciation balanced with artistic integrity. In an effort to highlight the beauty of the hymns, without trampling them underfoot, she has crafted a highly unique soundscape through a cinematic-styled approach. Working with co-producer Daniel James (Canon Blue, Joy Williams, Among Savages), the rich, lush textures and wide, expansive rhythms allow Audrey’s voice to glide effortlessly over a diverse landscape of prayerful contemplation. In the album’s quite moments, Audrey’s signature piano playing and pure vocal tone create a familiar and calming place for the listener. Audrey grew up learning to sing in a Plymouth Brethren community. “I was raised in a church where we didn’t use any instruments on Sunday mornings,” she notes. “I learned to sing there, from the old hymnbooks, in four-part harmony, with my family and my neighbors. It was multi-generational, it was deep and rich and beautiful, and like most of my favorite worship music, it was steeped in community.” The record blends these influences and infuses them with a truly modern sensibility—Inheritance is Audrey’s endeavor to honor her roots and, inspired by them, craft something fresh, fragrant, and new. One original song that should not go unnoticed is “Even Unto Death,” which was co-written with Matt Maher after Audrey heard of yet another martyrdom in the Middle East. “I thought of the many martyrs around the world, but especially those in the Middle East, and wondered to myself what would be running through my head if I knew my life was about to be taken because of my faith,” Audrey explains. “And so I began to write the song that became ‘Even Unto Death,’ praying for the martyrs and hoping for even a shred of their courage. That’s something I would want to sing about on Sundays.” Lover of my soul even unto death, with my every breath I will love youshares the chorus of the song, both fragile and confident—two words that happen to aptly describe Assad’s personal faith. Audrey sums it up this way: “I knew that Inheritance had to be much more than me going into the studio and simply doing pretty renditions of hymns we all know and love. I couldn’t be satisfied with that—I had to make something both bright and dark—colored honestly with my own doubts and weaknesses, so that the Lord who inspired these songs could be even more visible in it. Inheritance is an offering I am humbled, privileged, and challenged to make—and I pray it will be a gift to anyone who hears it.” In 2016, look for Audrey leading these hymns across the country and in Europe, speaking and writing for many outlets, partnering with organizations like World Relief, The Society of St Vincent de Paul, and Adore Ministries, and releasing even yet more music through her various projects. As prolific as she in honest, Audrey Assad is poised for a very big year. ⏪ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Welcome to The Shaun Tabatt Show! I had the chance to catch up with Christian music artist Cheri Keaggy at NRB 2016 in Nashville. In the interview she gives us an update on the fan response to her recent album No Longer My Own. About The Album:No Longer My Own seeks to embolden fellow sojourners of the faith to live more fearlessly for Christ. Perhaps that sentiment is best expressed in the album's title cut, a song inspired by the "Covenant Prayer" popularized by John Wesley. Listeners can look forward to such vertically oriented songs of celebration as "Lucky To Be Breathing Your Air," prayerful petitions like "Jesus, One and Only," poignant ballads like "You Go Before," and the powerful anthem, "Overcome," a response to recent news reports of believers facing persecution, even unto death, and the increase of moral decay in our nation. She also enlists her uncle, Grammy nominee and Dove Award winner Phil Keaggy, who contributes a jubilant ukulele track in the lighthearted Scripture song, "Whatever is True (Phil. 4:8)." Keaggy employed the innovative Kickstarter crowd-source business model to fund the project, joining such high profile Christian recording artists as Carman, Shaun Groves, John Schlitt, Five Iron Frenzy and Thousand Foot Krutch, who also used the outside-the-box service to fund recent projects. Keaggy is no stranger to the business model, having successfully employed Kickstarter to raise nearly $25,000 to fund her 2012 release, So I Can Tell. While Keaggy admits to being both humbled and excited by the number of doors that opened for ministry through concerts, church services, women's events, TV appearances, interviews, and radio airplay as a direct result of So I Can Tell, she insists the story is far from over. With a quiver full of new songs burning in her soul, Keaggy prays No Longer My Own will inspire and embolden fellow saints to live more fearlessly for Christ. About The Artist: Cheri Keaggy began her career as a worship leader at a small church in Southern California before recording her debut album on Sparrow Records, Child of the Father, in 1994. Honored with a Dove Award nomination for New Artist of the Year, Keaggy has gone on to record eight additional albums, resulting in nine No. 1 songs, three Dove Award nominations and a Dove Award win. Rod Huff is a successful business executive with 30 years experience in the operations and administration area. He began his baseball coaching experience as an assistant coach when his son, Austin, was five years old. His first head coaching experience began in 1995 when his company, Sparrow Records, sponsored his 7- and 8-year-old coach-pitch team. That year, as a first-year coach, his team, nicknamed the Birds, went 15-2. That season ushered in somewhat of a dynasty in his Brentwood, Tennessee, community, where he is known as one of the winningest coaches ever in the local league. His nine-year record as a head coach includes five league championships and four runner-up titles. Huff took his operational and administrative executive abilities to the ball field and came up with a winning formula of organization, feedback, and motivation, which had parents and players alike asking to be drafted by him every year. He shared this system in his book, titled Coaching Made Easier: How to Successfully Manage Your Youth Baseball Team—A Step-by-Step Guide to a Rewarding Season. Book Website: Coaches Choice Listen Now: Listen in ITunes: Itunes link Listen in Stitcher: Stitcher link Quote 'The will to win is important, but the will to prepare is vital' - Joe Paterno Coaching your own kids Rod gave a game-ball at the end of each game to a player, and he always would wait until every other kid had earned one before he would give one to his son. One year when the time came to give his son his game ball, his son had a terrible game, so Rod and the assistant coach had to 'manufacture' a creative way to reward him for something he did in the game. Lesson learned: should you save your son for last - or try harder to just treat him as every kid and give it to him when he deserves it? My Cringe & ‘Ah-Ha' Moments Communication about playing time - If a player is not playing/starting because of their attitude in practice - be sure to communicate the reason to them. Teaching Skills If you are struggling with something in games - make a fun game out of it to practice. And repeat it, maybe for the entire practice, until the kids are comfortable and know what they are supposed to do. Use stats to set your lineups. This is a good way to motivate improvement, and also it takes subjectivity out of it. Building confidence Humor can often be used to 'lighten the mood' if kids are taking a game too seriously Be observant - some kids get real uptight if their Dad is there Culture – Discipline/Rewards/Teambuilding You have to lead by example Draft kids: With older brothers (seriously) Age is huge, this is important if you can draft an older player vs. a younger one The talented troublemaker is never worth it Memorable Game Coach Huff had a game against their rival where his players were struggling hitting, and when they came into the dugouts, he told his players to keep quiet - because their bats were asleep and he didn't want to wake them up. This relaxed his team and they turned it around after that. Best Stolen Idea Tim Corbin - Vanderbilt coach: Empty your bench in inning changes - Anyone on the bench, between innings, go out and throw/stretch to stay involved. Also does a huddle with his team at they come off the field from defense, including everyone on the bench. Parting Advice Take it seriously, but have fun Ready to be an Awesome Youth Coach?
