We're celebrating our 10th anniversary all year by digging in the vaults to re-present classic episodes with fresh commentary. What better way to kick things off than where it all began? Here's a look back at episode one and our conversation with Jim Peterik. ABOUT JIM PETERIKSinger, songwriter, guitarist, and keyboardist Jim Peterik is best known as a founding member of the band Survivor and the co-writer of their Grammy-winning double platinum #1 hit single, “Eye of the Tiger.” But that's only the tip of the iceberg. Thirty-five of Jim's songs have appeared on the Billboard Pop chart, including seven Top 10 singles. His first major success came when his original band, Ides of March, took the Peterik-penned “Vehicle” to the #2 position on the Pop chart in 1970, spawning cover versions by Chet Baker and Shirley Bassey. After a stint as a solo artist with Epic Records, Jim formed Survivor in 1979, penning a string of hits for the band, including “I Can't Hold Back,” “High On You,” “The Search is Over,” “Burning Heart,” and “Is This Love.” While still writing hits for his own group, Jim forged a successful partnership with the members of 38 Special, co-writing classic songs, including “Rockin' Into the Night,” “Hold On Loosely,” and “Caught Up In You.” Widely respected as a top-notch collaborator, Jim has co-written successful songs with a number of artists, including the Beach Boys, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Sammy Hagar, Cheap Trick, the Doobie Brothers, REO Speedwagon, and Mindi Abair. The long list of those who have covered his compositions includes Paul Anka, Gloria Gaynor, Tony Orlando, Reba McEntire, Larry Gatlin, Blackhawk, and The Outlaws. He is the co-author, with Dave Austin, of Songwriting for Dummies.

This conversation with saxophonist Mindi Abair, hosted by Talaya of "Watercolors" on SiriusXM, was recorded on the second week of The Smooth Jazz Cruise earlier this year. The two talked about Mindi's storied career and her interests off the bandstand.
This is a Very Special Episode celebrating that we've just passed 2 million downloads for the podcast! I started the podcast in March 2021 during the depths of the pandemic, with no audience at all. It took two years to reach 1 million downloads but just one more year to reach 2 million.I'm extremely thankful for all the wonderful guests that I've had, and so appreciative of my audience for your support. When I began the podcast my goal was to motivate and encourage my listeners to follow their dream, whatever it may be, just as I had followed my youthful music dream later in life. It was only after I turned 60 that I was finally able to devote myself entirely to music. Since then I've released 14 acclaimed albums including a Billboard #1. I've also written a best selling book and started this podcast. As I like to say, you're never too old, and it's never too late, to follow your dream. My guests have been an amazing assortment of talented and successful musicians and other creatives. I've become friends with many of them. And, the icing on the cake is that I've been able to collaborate musically with a number of them.I hope that you continue to enjoy this podcast and my music, as we look forward to 3 million downloads. My featured song is “Metro Shuffle” from the album The PGS Experience by my band Project Grand Slam. This song features the great Mindi Abair on sax and has become more or less the official theme song of the podcast. In the next hour of The Roadhouse, I've got a full set of Roadhouse debuts, a track from a deluxe edition follow-up to a first-of-its-kind release, and a surprising Roadhouse debut from a guitarist who's been around since the early 1960s. Balta Bordoy & the Bad Boys, Gov't Mule, Delbert McClinton, Bonham-Bullick, and Mindi Abair lead the hour. We're pretty much right on par with 14 tracks in the hour and that those tracks definitely comprise another hour of the finest blues you've never heard.

This week Matthew and Kim sit down with musician Mindi Abair and, wine expert Eric Guerra. This couple met in their early 40's and have been inseparable for the last eight years. Eric, previously married, brought two daughters into the relationship, and Mindi, a single woman, had to step out of her comfort zone and jump into family life. Each having successful individual careers in the music and wine label industries, they had everything but a partnership. This fun-loving duo is not only a kickass couple but business partners in their unique wine and art experience. Keep listening to hear how they have adapted to each other's lives seamlessly and maintain their commitment, trust, and loyalty in love and business. Key Topics -learning from other successful relationships -Bringing children from a different marriage into your relationship -getting ahead of conflicts-Learning vulnerability Quotes “One of the initial things I loved about him. He is this amazingly loyal, just real guy and not everyone is that.” - Mindi “She's all in, that was it. She's the only person I ever dated that when we started to fall in love she was all in and there was no question about that at all about anything.” -Eric “There things that break up relationships all the time, money, finances, how we deal with challenges with the kids or careers. Never once have I ever questioned the trust the loyalty the decisions she's made that involve us.” -Eric “Here I was, probably the one woman on the entire planet who didn't have kids, and I get with a guy who has two, two girls. And it's not 50/50 custody it was 100% custody, he was raising his daughters himself and that was something that was not in my comfort zone.” -Mindi “I think with the commitment aspect, we both had to go out of our comfort zone and become a team and learn from each other and our new path and I think that was something that made us stronger.” -Mindi “I'm the chattier person in real life, maybe I'm not the more open person. I'm more kind of not as open about talking about feelings or things that could be incredibly bad not to talk about so I love that he is that personality that will bring it up.” -Mindi “It's hard to be vulnerable. I grew up a woman in a man's world in music. Vulnerability is not the key to success necessarily, but in a relationship it is.” - Mindi “People are commenting on our relationship more than the wine, more than the music and then they say holy cow this show is awesome and the wine is great.” -Eric “Find someone who can bring out all the great things that you want to be in life...finding Mindi brought out all the things I've always wanted to be.” -Eric Find Mindi at: https://www.mindiabair.comFind their wine and music experience: https://www.reservetastings.comFollow us on Instagram, Facebook and TikTok @kickasscouplesnationFor access to workshops with professional therapists, keynote speakers, hot seat training and more exclusive content join our online learning community at: https://matthewphoffman.comOrder ‘Kickass Husband: Winning at Life, Marriage, and Sex' by Matthew Hoffman at https://matthewphoffman.com/ And don't forget to leave us a review!

Our guest for today is Robert Miller. Robert is a musician who followed his youthful dream later in life and became a Rock Star when he was in his 60s, an age when most people are planning their retirement. In just 5+ years Robert and his band, Project Grand Slam, have released 10 celebrated albums including a Billboard #1, have had over 4 million video views, over 1 million Spotify streams, and more than 50,000 Facebook fans. He's played festivals and concerts around the world and opened for Edgar Winter, Blues Traveler, Boney James and Mindi Abair, and an after-show for YES. In March 2021 Robert started the Follow Your Dream Podcast to inspire and motivate others to pursue and succeed at their dream – whatever it may be. Robert's Podcast Website: www.followyourdreampodcast.com Follow Your Dream Handbook: https://amzn.to/3y2jp7p My band, Project Grand Slam: www.projectgrandslam.com These are my Key Takeaways from my dialogue with our guest for today: 1. You are never too old, and it is never too late to follow your dream! 2. If you have a dream, then take baby steps towards it so that it is not too daunting and it becomes doable. 3. Life is not a straight line and there is no straight line to success. It is going to be a wiggle and you must be willing to deal with that and make adjustments to your plan along the way. 4. Robert took us through his interesting dream theory. He explains clearly what each step towards achieving your dream entails. 5. it's not success or failure that is the key. It's the act of trying. That's what will give you the inner happiness, the satisfaction. Success is just the icing on the cake. 6. Lastly, Covid has taught us that we can't assume that we have forever so if things were to end sooner then let's ask ourselves have we accomplished, and involved ourselves in things we wanted and have we created joy, happiness, and family relationships that we wanted to create? I will bring you the next episode of Sharing Life Lessons next Wednesday. Until then, 'be happy, be safe and be blessed'. Today's guest is a two-time Grammy nominee with 12 #1 radio hits, Mindi Abair. She is a very successful saxophonist, vocalist, and author, and she is also an entrepreneur. She was the featured saxophonist on American Idol for a couple of seasons and the first solo saxophonist touring with Aerosmith since 1973. Her father was a saxophone and a keyboard player in the Blue-Eyed Soul band. Her grandmother was an opera singer. Seeing her father having so much fun on stage while playing saxophone, she also chose to play saxophone, and she chose well. She loves playing for the masses, and she says she has always been a live music girl. In 2019 Mindi and her husband, Eric, launched Reserve Tasting Wine Company. Listen to this episode to learn more about her, her music, her life, business, hobbies, passion; what she likes to listen to, and much more. In the ‘Bout it or Doubt it segment, you can find out what she thinks about skydiving and mounting climbing. Enjoy this conversation and listening to three of her songs: April, Flirt, and Be Beautiful. Episode Highlights08:38 – In my music, you can hear that pop influence on certain records. Certain records are more blues-influenced, a lot more organic sounding, or rougher. I try to take what's in my heart at the time. Art should reflect life. 13:54 – I was going to make music that moves people, that moves me. We recorded April right as the world was shutting down for the pandemic. That song tells the story. 17:46 – I felt the same as I feel now, that I became a better saxophonist on that tour and making that record because you're surrounded every night on stage and backstage with these incredible players. 25:02 – I've spent my life creating music and playing music. But my husband has spent his life running very cool vineries. He is quite knowledgeable. He goes and finds incredible wines, and I create the artwork for it. And I put together a playlist for each bottle.35:56 – I spent about ten years on the board of The Recording Academy. I became a national Trustee for the organization. I really love to be a part of that, and it became a huge part of my life because they do so much good. In just six months since its launch in March 2021 the Follow Your Dream podcast has 38 episodes, a Top 5% ranking, many thousands of downloads from dozens of countries, VIP guests from various walks of life including musicians, broadcasters, authors, dancers, actors and more, Bonus Music Episodes, and Songfests. Stick with us - so much more to come!I wasn't completely sure where things would go when I started the podcast. I knew that I wanted to help people pursue their dream, and combine that with my music which is the manifestation of my dream. But the exact dynamics were going to be more like a work in progress.I called upon 4 friends as my initial guests, including “Cousin Brucie” Morrow, America's most famous radio personality, who was my first guest. The podcast has developed tremendously. So many fantastic guests - musicians, broadcasters, authors, dancers, actors. Such interesting and successful people. Wonderful examples of people who followed their dream to success.I'm proud to say that the podcast entered the Top 5% of all podcasts several months ago - and we're still climbing. Many thousands of downloads so far from dozens of countries.I started this podcast to help all of the dreamers out there to pursue and succeed at their dream, whatever it might be, just as I followed and succeeded at my music dream.I believe that Everyone has a dream, and they come in all different shapes and sizes. It could be to learn a new skill, start a new hobby, open up a business, or change jobs. When we're young our dreams are usually big, like becoming a scientist, a ball player, the president, or maybe even a Rock Star. But most people never wind up pursuing their youthful dream because life gets in the way. Marriage, kids, job, obligations, debt. You wake up one day and realize that your dream has gone away - and you're full of regret. That's what happened to me too. My youthful music dream got away from me - not just for years but for decades - until finally, when I was in my 60s, I realized that it was now or never. I did not want to look back at the end of my life and regret that I never even took the shot. So I jumped into the deep end of the pool. And for me it was the best decision I ever made. Here I am 5 or 6 years later and I've got 10 celebrated albums including a Billboard #1, over 4mm video views, over a million Spotify streams, over 50,000 FB fans, I've played festivals and concerts around the world, and I've had appearances with Edgar Winter, Blues Traveler, Boney James and Mindi Abair. How did I do it? And how can you follow and succeed at your dream?I believe that the answer lies in creating an Action Plan consisting of baby steps. If you think of your dream in its entirety - from A to Z - you may be intimidated that it's too big a leap. But if you break it down and look at it as a baby step from A to B and then another baby step from B to C, and so on, it becomes manageable. All of my podcast guests have had one thing in common - they followed their dream and are successful at what they do. And I ask them for their advice to the dreamers out there. People who have never pursued their dream, or where they tried but haven't yet been successful.Their advice is remarkably consistent across all occupations. Try. Stick to it. Never give up. Persistence. Hard work. Don't let anyone or any comment get you down or dissuade you.And keep in mind that success is not the goal. The goal is trying. To take your best shot. To never wake up at any point in your life and say that you regret not giving your dream a chance. Success is just the icing on the cake.
