In episode two of Transmissions From Deep Ellum, the band members give us an unprecedented look inside the creation and refinement of the songs that came to make up their new album, the Grammy®-nominated Empire Central. Though the collective has recorded in front of live audiences before, shaking off two years of pandemic lockdown added a new level of intensity to the process. Band members discuss what it felt like to get back into rehearsals and realign as a group in order to execute on the musical direction inspired by bandleader Michael League.Snarky Puppy seamlessly fuses a deep knowledge and respect for musical tradition with sonic and conceptual innovation in a way that is able to reach the most critical- or most carefree- audience. After a decade of relentless touring and recording in all but complete obscurity, the Texas-bred/New York-based quasi-collective suddenly found itself held up by the press and public as one of the major figures in the jazz world. But as the category names for all four of the band's Grammy® awards would indicate (Best R&B Performance in 2014, Best Contemporary Instrumental Album in 2016, 2017, and 2021), Snarky Puppy isn't exactly a jazz band. It's not a fusion band, and it's definitely not a jam band. It's probably best to take Nate Chinen of the New York Times' advice, as stated in an online discussion about the group, to “take them for what they are, rather than judge them for what they're not.”Transmissions From Deep Ellum is produced by Eric Lense and Jamie Margulies of GroundUp Music, and is narrated by Alex Ariff. In episode three of Transmissions From Deep Ellum, the band finally takes the stage to record the Grammy®-nominated Empire Central and they have to ask themselves - do they still know how to record a live studio album? Descending upon Dallas' Deep Ellum Art Company to record, the bar is as high as ever - even for a band as accomplished as Snarky Puppy. You'll hear from longtime audio engineer Mike Harrison on how he captures their complex sound and improvisational performance; and, get a firsthand account of the recording process as if you were in the room experiencing the unique character of the Empire Central sessions - not a proper studio recording session, but also not a traditional live gig. Perspectives from the band members guide you through how they communicate and collaborate during the process, to ultimately achieve the sound that is Snarky Puppy.Snarky Puppy seamlessly fuses a deep knowledge and respect for musical tradition with sonic and conceptual innovation in a way that is able to reach the most critical- or most carefree- audience. How would you describe Snarky Puppy? In Episode 1 of this series, band members weigh in on the essence of the group as they prepare to record Snarky Puppy's Grammy®-nominated album, Empire Central. In this episode, Leah and Taraleigh have the pleasure of sitting down with a whole family of talented musicians, Denise and Bobby Deitch, and their son Adam Deitch. Fans get a real treat by experiencing the love, connection, and support of the Deitch family and a glimpse into Adam’s early influences and first live performance that transformed his childhood experience. Adam talks about how he is staying busy during COVID times and ways he is continuing to bring music to the people. For the “Did you Know” section, Leah provides research on the emotion of love, often present during live music, and Taraleigh tells listeners how to cultivate love in all its forms in her “Daily Jam.” Denise Hettinger Deitch has studied music since her early childhood. In middle school she was in a special music program in NYC when she began playing drums. She then attended Berklee College of Music and graduated with a degree in Music Education. During her time in Boston, she performed on drums with various bands. She then moved to NY to be with family with her husband and baby son. Denise performed with Bobby as a duo 4 to 6 nights a week in the NY Tri-state area for approximately 21 years. During that time she began teaching music in NY area and obtained a Masters degree followed by an additional 60 credits. She then retired after teaching for 25+ years. She is now performing as percussionist and background vocalist with the Bobby Deitch Band and teaching drums and piano privately. Bobby Deitch began his love for music at the age of 5. His eclectic musical taste was attributed to the fact that several genres of music were played in the Deitch household, on a daily basis. Bobby gravitated to drums by age 8. At age 8 Bobby’s uncle Dave Abrams, a well-known professional drummer and vocalist was an early influence on Bobby’s early musical development and by age 11 his parents purchased his first drum kit. After graduating high school in 1971, Bobby focused on studying music more seriously and moved to Boston, Massachusetts to attend the prestigious Berklee College of Music. There he began to work on all aspects of music such as composition, harmony, ear training and counterpoint with some of the best instructors in the business. Bobby has performed on drums on several recordings such as pianist/composer Richard Sorce’s acclaimed Latin album “A Place I’ve Never Been” and guitarist/Berklee faculty member Richie Hart’s “331/3” album. In April, 2020, Bobby, along with his band The Bobby Deitch Band (BDB) released their second album, “Work With Whatcha Got”, which has reached global acclaim. Adam Deitch’s career has crossed genres and he plays the role of both producer and drummer. Adam was inspired by hip-hop at an early age, inspired by Public Enemy and Eric B and Rakim. Adam has produced records for such luminaries as 50-Cent, Redman, Talib Kweli, Pharoahe Monch, Chali 2na and MF Doom. He has also done major session work on drums for artists including Justin Timberlake, Daniel Bedingfield, Anthony Hamilton, DJ Quik and Wyclef Jean and the Fugees. Adam has toured the world and recorded as a member of the Grammy Nominated John Scofield Band, Pretty Lights, the Average White Band, The Fugees, Wyclef Jean, Meshell Ndegeocello and his own Break Science and Lettuce. A living legend is back with his sixth album in the past seven years. Herb Alpert, the famed trumpeter and former record company executive, works with producer Jochem van der Saag on the new album Music Vol. 1. The combination of these two talents is masterful and satisfying, and it produces a collection that will please several generations of fans. The album features primarily cover songs with new treatments that emphasize rhythms and backbeats, and this review not only takes a look at the new album, but also offers a peek at Alpert’s phenomenal success in the music industry. It was 55 years ago this year, for example, that Alpert and his Tijuana Brass began conquering the charts with his first hit album and single, The Lonely Bull. Music Vol. 1 features unique renditions on some familiar classics such as the Beatles “Michelle,” John Lennon’s “Imagine,” and Nate King Cole’s “Unforgettable” as well as new version of Jason Mraz’s “I’m Yours.” Alpert also brings back one the TJB’s early hits, “Flamingo,” the album’s first single. Alpert received a Grammy nomination for the Best Contemporary Instrumental Album for his 2016 work, Human Nature. In many ways, Music Vol. 1 is a superior collection, and should not only receive a 2017 nomination, which would be his 25th, but he can be considered a strong early favorite.

Kori's saga is filled with a love affair for music. Kori grew up with 100% hearing loss in her left ear, which has not stopped her from pursuing her musical career. She is a classically trained pianist, and composes all of her music. Kori's song “Carpe Diem – Featuring Aeone” won the 2012 Independent Music Award for Best New Age Song. Kori's album “Trillium” was nominated Zone Music Reporters 2009 Awards “Album of the Year” and “Best Contemporary Instrumental Album”. Lately, she has been diagnosed with a vocal disorder, which has stopped her from singing, however, she still can “sing” with her fingers using her main instrument, the piano. Kori lives in Southern California with her husband, 4 children, a cat, dog, bunny and her eyes are midnight blue. “Kori Carothers is, without question a brilliant pianist and composer. What sets her apart, however, is the broad range of styles she utilizes so gracefully. Kori moves between the worlds of achingly beautiful acoustic piano composition and lavish keyboard production with remarkable ease. The result “Trillium”, a cohesive collection of compositions of stunning breadth and dynamic range, confidently held together by her singular musical voice. ~Will Ackerman, Windham County, VT May 2009
