On this episode, Laura is joined by Mary Gauthier, award-winning singer-songwriter and author of the book, Saved by a Song: The Art and Healing Power of Songwriting. Described as a “must read book” by Rolling Stone, fellow songwriter Brandi Carlisle says, “Mary's songwriting speaks to the tender aspects of our humanness. We need her voice in times like these more than we ever have.” Mary has won numerous awards and her songs have been recorded by dozens of artists, including Jimmy Buffett, Dolly Parton, Boy George, Kathy Mattea, and Tim McGraw to name a few. She has released eleven albums, including her latest masterful work, Dark Enough to See the Stars and the Grammy-nominated Rifles and Rosary Beads, a collection of songs Mary co-wrote with soldiers healing from their experience of war. This poignant collaboration echoes a theme in her book – that songwriting is a healing tool. Filled with wisdom, Mary shines as a storyteller in the book, sharing the stories of her own healing journey and call to music as she reflects on aspects of her life including her adoption, addiction and recovery, and her experience of being a gay woman in the music industry. In this conversation, Mary and Laura explore this theme of healing through song and discuss the role of the songwriter, the strength found in vulnerability, and the importance of being willing to dig deeply into our human experience. Mary's intelligence, sensitivity, and humor shine throughout the book and this interview. For more information about Mary, her records, and Saved by a Song, visit marygauthier.com.
Part 2 of 2:They come in all shapes, colors, sizes and quality, but where did the rosary come from and what exactly is the significance of the Rosary Beads? We learn from many apparitions that Our Lady says she is depending on our rosaries to help her achieve her plans for the world. She pleads that if we knew the power of the rosary, then the power of Satan would be finished. No wonder that in so many apparitions in so many places, she has asked us to pray the rosary every day! David conquered Goliath with a slingshot, and we can conquer evil through the Rosary. That's why Fr. Mark Bozada wisely calls them "Battle Beads"!

A "Christian" Evangelistic meeting took place in Omaha, Nebraska, hosted by Luis Palau's Ministry. The Luis Palau representatives sought out the Roman Catholic leaders in that area because they wanted them to participate in that meeting. The Catholic Church wanted certain conditions to be met, so in agreement with Palau's representatives, they were allowed to set up a tent near the entrance at that meeting. Roman Catholic priests then distributed rosaries and heard confessions from those who desired that. All of this was approved by the Luis Palau organizers! The pandemic hasn't been easy, of course, but it has provided at a new way for Mary Gauthier to engage with her music. Her story songs have comfortably made the jump to virtual performances, as she's embraced the talk show host inside. Earlier this year, she released Dark Enough to See the Stars – her 11th album overall and the first in eight years made up entirely of her own songs. The album follows 2018's Rifles & Rosary Beads, a collaborative effort that found providing music for lyrics penned by Iraq War veterans. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
This week, the show dials into the Nashville studio of one of the most gifted songwriters and empathic storytellers of her generation: Mary Gauthier. While Mary has become known for her darkly honest tales of overcoming addiction and seeking truth and joy after overcoming her troubled upbringing in Louisiana, she was nominated for a Grammy for her devastating record Rifles & Rosary Beads (co-written with U.S. veterans and their loved-ones) and her new record may be her most surprising and moving collection yet. Dark Enough To See The Stars, which drops June 3rd on Thirty Tigers, is in many ways an unabashed romance album, celebrating, in her own sardonic John Prine-meets-Anthony Bourdain style, how lovely it can be to find true love and creative joy at long last. During the pandemic she began performing a weekly stream with her amor, the talented songwriter Jaimee Harris, called Sundays with Mary - and while Gauthier has now returned to the road, the cathartic weekly song sharing show has continued too. Harris helped write the swoon-worthy traveling song “Amsterdam” on the newest LP.Gauthier's road to stability and creative contentment was a long one. As she gamely explains in this intense conversation, she made the leap to leave the relentless life of being a cook and restaurant owner (and partaker in too many illegal substances) and devoted herself to songwriting after getting arrested at thirty. Was she an instant hit on folk stages in her then base of Boston? Not exactly. In fact, she couldn't step on any stage without shaking. But she kept at it and the stories flowed. Early tours with Prine gave her confidence. Her breakout record Mercy Now (2005) chronicles her technicolor debauched early years with the clear-eyed grace of the newly sober, trying to give forgiveness to her troubled family and to herself for making it through. Being an openly gay songwriter, she took early inspiration from her heroes the Indigo Girls who showed her there was a place for a new kind of empowered songwriting, not just for women, but for anyone who wanted to look deeper into what women are experiencing behind closed doors. If Gauthier has one superpower as a songwriter it's her ability to empathize with everyone around her - even the troubled soldiers who she teamed up with on Rifles & Rosary Beads. We have way more in common with each other than many may think - overcoming trauma is pretty damn universal. Her book Saved By A Song: The Art And Healing Power Of Songwriting is her most powerful collection of stories and may explain best how her art has evolved in the last two decades, plus on the road.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-show-on-the-road-with-z-lupetin1106/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Broken Record with Malcolm Gladwell, Rick Rubin, and Bruce Headlam
Mary Gauthier is a folk singer/songwriter whose songs have quite literally saved her life. Writing music did not come easily to Gauthier. She began abusing drugs and alcohol as a young girl growing up in Louisiana. After years of struggling with addiction, Gauthier got clean at age 27 and began frequenting open mics around Boston. She released her debut album, Dixie Kitchen, in 1997 and moved to Nashville not long after. She has since become known for her ability to write vivid, literary-style lyrics that pull from her past trauma, loss, and heartbreak. On today's episode Bruce Headlam talks to Mary Gauthier about how the same determination that once drove her to drink now powers her songwriting. She also talks about how conversations with young U.S. veterans inspired her Grammy-nominated album, Rifles & Rosary Beads. And Gauthier recalls seeing one particularly moving open mic performance that inspired her to become the artist she is today. Help produce Basic Folk by contributing at basicfolk.com/donateMary Gauthier's book, Saved By A Song, is a must-read for all humans with feelings that need feeling. Gauthier has been writing and recording songs since the the early 90's, but she actually started her music career relatively late at age 30. She had grown up as an adopted child in Thibodaux, Louisiana, which was something that she didn't realize had greatly impacted her until she was in her 40's. She created a concept album, The Foundling, out of that realization. Some people find that album hard to listen to, but it was deeply healing for her and for other grown-up adopted children. She found herself in the Boston area as a chef in her late 20's. She was arrested for drunk driving the night of her restaurant opening, The Dixie Kitchen. She spent a hard night in jail, got sober and started taking an interest in songwriting. Thanks to encouragement she found at open mics in the area, including at Club Passim, Mary discovered her true passion was writing songs. She stepped away from her stable career in the restaurant business and started pursued music full time. She's toured, released albums and co-written songs with music professionals for the past 30+ years now. For the past several years, she's been working with soldiers and their families on writing songs together. The process has been rewarding and challenging for her, culminating in her latest studio album Rifles and Rosary Beads. She has continued her writing with professionals and soldiers as well as teaching songwriting classes. Most recently, she's been working with health care workers to write songs in reaction to their Covid-19 experience. Her work is a gift not only to us, her listeners, but it has actually been life-changing to countless individuals and their families. She is brilliant at bringing people to their most frightening and vulnerable places because she is living proof that life is better on the other side of trauma. Thank you for you wonderful work, Mary Gauthier! Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

Mary Gauthier was twelve years old when she was given her Aunt Jenny's old guitar and taught herself to play with a Mel Bay basic guitar workbook. Music offered her a window to a world where others felt the way she did. Songs became lifelines to her, and she longed to write her own, one day. Then, for a decade, while struggling with addiction, Gauthier put her dream away and her call to songwriting faded. It wasn't until she got sober and went to an open mic with a friend did she realize that she not only still wanted to write songs, she needed to. Today, Gauthier is a decorated musical artist, with numerous awards and recognition for her songwriting, including a Grammy nomination. In Saved by a Song: The Art and Healing Power of Songwriting (St. Martin's Essentials, 2021), Mary Gauthier pulls the curtain back on the artistry of songwriting. Part memoir, part philosophy of art, part nuts and bolts of songwriting, her book celebrates the redemptive power of song to inspire and bring seemingly different kinds of people together. The Associated Press named Mary Gauthier one of the best songwriters of her generation. In this episode of "Keen On", Andrew is joined by Mary Gauthier, the author of "Saved by a Song: The Art and Healing Power of Songwriting", to break down the act of songwriting itself, as well as to showcase the redemptive power of song and how it can inspire and bring seemingly different kinds of people together. Mary Gauthier is a Grammy-nominated American folk singer-songwriter and author, whose songs have been covered by performers including Tim McGraw, Blake Shelton, Kathy Mattea, and Jimmy Buffett. She has won multiple awards, including at the International Folk Music Awards, the Independent Music Awards, and from the Americana Association. Mary's songs often deal with marginalization, informed by her experience of addiction and recovery, and growing up gay, and demonstrate an "ability to transform her own trauma into a purposeful and communal narrative". Her 2018 album Rifles & Rosary Beads, co-written with military veterans and their families, has been hailed as a landmark achievement. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The two talk about why superheroes are so often adoptees and orphans (and vice versa,) the power of songwriting for veterans, her last live show immediately before the shutdown, and so much more. Mary Gauthier's name is spoken with reverence in songwriter circles. She’s won countless awards from organizations like the Americana Music Association, GLAAD, and Folk Alliance International, and was nominated for Best Folk Album at the 2019 Grammy Awards. A Louisiana native, she’s been releasing her own music for over twenty years, but her 2019 record Rifles and Rosary Beads brought a whole new level to her art, when she collaborated with the Songwriting With Soldiers project to put wounded veterans’ stories to song.
We pause to examine two items in recent news. The current president of the Southern (oh, the horror!) Baptist Convention, J.D. Greear, decides to place the integrity of scripture and the Lord himself below his need to virtue signal. Meanwhile The Blaze has no idea what Rosary Beads are for. And, finally, in its eagerness to be loved via self-flagellating, Princeton confesses to egregiously violating the Civil Right Act.
Anna & Jess dive in to the different tools of their trade, their uses, background and discuss the importance of the intention and faith behind the tools you're using.
Live from the red carpet at the 2018 Americana Honors & Awards Show, Mary Gauthier gives a few minutes to DittyTV to discuss her album, Rifles and Rosary Beads. Recorded September 2018 See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Aaron Bobrow-Strain is a politics professor at Whitman College with decades of history working on the U.S.-Mexico Border. His new book, The Death and Life of Aida Hernandez, mixes nonfiction and novel, ethnography and essay, to tell the tale of a single woman as she’s pulled back and forth across this imaginary line. Aida Hernandez—which is not her real name—was brought to the United States when she was in elementary school, ferried across the border from the Mexican town of Agua Prieta to its other half: Douglas, Arizona. She grew up there and had an American son, but she was deported—without him—and only made it back to Douglas after enduring immigration court, for-profit detention, family separation, gendered violence, and a host of attendant traumas. Aida’s is not a Cinderella story, and she’s not a bootstrap immigrant fantasy. Mary Gauthier is one of the most unique songwriters in Nashville. Forgoing the city's often conventional pop sound, Gauthier's songs are unafraid to probe into what she calls "the extremely personal." Gauthier talks to Bruce Headlam in this episode of Broken Record about getting her start as a songwriter in her 30's and co-writing her last album, "Rifles and Rosary Beads", with U.S. Military Veterans and their families. It's one of Malcolm Gladwell's favorite records of 2018 and here she performs three numbers from the album plus one from an older release, "Mercy Now." Learn more about your ad choices. (Session originally published in January, 2018) You know, songwriters, the really good ones, have this ability to twist a phrase or choose a word that somehow is exactly right. It's a real gift. But the truth is - everyone, songwriter or not, has a story to share. Not all of us, however, know how to share it. The desire to discover the stories we don't normally get to hear is what inspired Mary Gauthier to start working alongside combat veterans and the SongwritingWith:Soldiers organization a few years back. "We listen to their stories," she says, "And we turn their experiences into songs...We take an experience and turn it into something tangible, something that people everywhere can empathize with." It's an extraordinary project that's turned into a new album for Gauthier, 'Rifles and Rosary Beads,' and she shared a little bit about this remarkable group and the men and women who participate during her exclusive Folk Alley Session with us at this year's 30A Songwriters Festival in Florida.

We recently published an episode with singer-songwriter Mary Gauthier and talked about her inspiring work with the organization Songwriting with Soldiers. We wanted to create a separate episode with the conversation we had afterwards with a US Marine, veteran Bill Auger, who shared the story of his first songwriting experience on the retreat with professional songwriter Darden Smith, and how the experience and the songs changed his life for the better. Bill is joined by Songwriting with Soldiers co-founder Mary Judd, who talks about the genesis, growth and unique aspects of their mission. Song List: All songs by Mary Gauthier from the album Rifles and Rosary Beads Available at www.marygauthier.com Song 1: Soldering On Song 2: Rifles and Rosary Beads
Mary Gauthier didn't pick up a guitar until later in life, and although finding success as a Boston restaurateur, certain events forced a change. Ten albums later she continues to tell stories of her past, her own healing, and the search for honesty and truth. Mary has lived through some challenging experiences and now she shares the songwriting pen and paper with US Veterans to tell their own stories through the Songwriting With:Soldiers program. We talked with Mary prior to her acoustic show at Boston’s brand new City Winery. Afterwards we were fortunate and thankful to meet with a US Marine, veteran Bill Auger, who shared the story of his first songwriting experience with professional songwriter Darden Smith, and how the experience and the songs changed his life for the better. "Rifles and Rosary Beads" is a powerful change in direction for the long-time singer songwriter. After eleven albums of mostly autobiographical songs, she has co-written all the songs with military men and women who are veterans of combat. It’s an album unlike any other, directly tapping into the lives of those who protect this country.
