How often do you use storytelling in your business? Perhaps often. But how often do you share your story, and how does it make you feel when you do? For many small business owners, it makes us feel vulnerable, and we lose confidence in using our voices in the way that feels right for us. Luckily, this month's guest author is here to help us. Hilary Salzman is a business storyteller, writer, podcast host, and speaker dedicated to helping female business owners who struggle to use their voices and tell their stories confidently. Her debut nonfiction book, ‘The Roar of Her Story—How To Tell Everyday Stories to Attract Your Dream Clients and Build a Business That's Unapologetically You,' reflects a much-needed shift from #girlboss culture towards a more authentic, fulfilling approach to business. It encourages women to set their own personal benchmarks for success, empowers them to make meaningful life changes and provides practical advice on building a brand story that reflects their true selves. During our fantastic conversation, we talk about: Why do more women in business need to use storytelling on the regs, and why can we feel so vulnerable to doing so? How we can overcome the fear and start to tell our stories to our customers and clients - in a way that feels right for us and benefits our businesses! Why our past experiences can impact how we show up and talk about ourselves and our businesses - and what the younger generation may be doing differently on this front! Hilary's publishing journey and how she finally found the right ‘home' for her book with a publisher who really 'got' what she was trying to do with her book. Why it's so important to build a writing team to support you but recognising that this group of people needs to be carefully curated to avoid derailing your progress! And so much more! This is a brilliant conversation - one of my all-time favourites, actually - and so I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I loved having it. Every writer needs a compass to guide their journey. In this episode, we explore the power of personal writing principles and how they can transform your writing practice from scattered to structured, from overwhelming to achievable. After a decade of writing and publishing, I'm sharing the ten principles that have shaped my writing journey - not as a rigid rulebook but as inspiration for developing your own unique approach to writing. In this episode, you'll discover: Why consistency matters more than inspiration (and why 30 minutes a day is enough!) The importance of reading widely - beyond your genre - to develop your unique voice How to handle the reality that not everyone will love your writing (and why that's perfectly okay) Why treating your writing like marathon training can lead to better results The power of celebrating small wins along your writing journey How to keep writing when you're stuck (hint: sometimes "blah blah blah" is perfectly acceptable!) Why your friends and family's response to your writing shouldn't define your success The crucial balance between dedication and enjoyment in your writing practice Remember, these principles aren't a one-size-fits-all solution. They're a starting point for developing your own North Star that will light up your unique writing path. Whether you're writing your first book or your fifteenth, having clear principles can help you navigate the challenges and celebrate the victories of your writing journey. Enjoy! Every year in Newcastle, there's an annual sales and marketing event for small businesses called Atomicon - and this year, I went along to listen to some great speakers and learn more about building a successful business. Something I'm asked in almost every interview I do or when I'm working with authors is: When is the right time to call yourself an author? It's a tricky one because a lot of it comes down to our own confidence levels - and that sneaky imposter syndrome we can all feel from time to time. But I believe we all need to take ownership of our narratives. So, I've dedicated this podcast episode to unpicking why we can feel hesitant to use the ‘author' label and how we can step into authorship with confidence and conviction instead. During it, you'll discover: My own journey to calling myself an author, including the impact of childhood bullying on my reluctance How imposter syndrome can hinder us from embracing the "author" title Why it's time to claim the "author" label on our own terms, without waiting for permission or milestones And LOTS more! It's perfectly normal to feel hesitant to use the term ‘author', particularly if we're yet to publish anything. But I believe that the sooner we do, the more confident - and dare I say proud - we'll feel about our achievements. It's time to step into authorship - are you ready? Enjoy! What's it like to be published by a ‘big 5' publisher? How can you find time to write when you have a job, a young family…and a global pandemic to contend with? These are just a few of the questions I ask this month's guest - Dr Emma Hepburn - aka @thepsychologymum. Emma is a clinical psychologist with expertise in neuropsychology who has over 20 years of experience working with and treating mental health difficulties and working with brain conditions in both the NHS and private sector. She is the author of four books, including “A Toolkit for Modern Life,” “A Toolkit for Happiness,” and “A Toolkit for Your Emotions.” She has been featured on the BBC, in the Huffington Post, and the Sunday Telegraph and has a regular column in Psychologies magazine. During our brilliant chat, we discuss: Emma's author journey, including her experience working with one of the Big Five publishers - Hachette - and why she believes great books come from having a great team around you. Why we can struggle with imposter syndrome as writers - and often don't even call ourselves authors, despite having written several books. The opportunities that being an author has given her - helping her spread her message further - and why timing played a part in the success of her first book - March 2020, anyone? How Emma managed to fit in writing during the years of COVID - particularly when working for the NHS - and the different experiences she had writing each of her books when it came to time management! And LOTS more! I've been a big fan of Emma's since I started reading her monthly column in Psychologies magazine - not to mention her artwork on Instagram, which is incredible at demystifying the brain and giving her audience practical tools to help with their mental health. This is a wonderful conversation, so I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed having it! Have you ever wondered what it takes to publish multiple books? Perhaps your first one has given you a taste of how exciting the writing journey can be. On this week's podcast, I talk to multi-published author Shelley Wilson. She's a self-confessed word nerd with a passion for storytelling, a love of exclamation marks, and a mission to inspire and entertain. She's an English multi-genre author of YA fiction and motivational self-help titles. During our brilliant conversation, we chat about: The incredible success of her debut nonfiction book, ‘How I Changed My Life in a Year' - selling 20,000 copies - and why community and building your author platform is so important. Her hybrid publishing model —both with her traditional publisher and through self-publishing—and her experience when one of the ‘Big Five' publishers got in touch! Just goes to show you never know who's reading or listening to your stuff. Why we can underestimate the emotional journey we'll go on when writing - and why self-compassion, vulnerability and kindness are an essential part of our author toolkits. Shelley's habits for getting her bum in the chair and continuing writing—and the power of a realistic deadline. And lots more! Shelley really is an inspiration to me - she's published 20 books - but what I loved most about talking to her was how much she wants to help others succeed, too. Often, for authors, promoting and marketing a book can often feel more intimidating than the writing process itself. However, making meaningful connections with your readers is key in today's publishing landscape. In this episode of the Creating Happy Writers podcast, I chat with expert publicist Isabelle Knight about methods you can use for strategically sharing your stories and voice with wider audiences - in the hope of demystifying the process and taking the overwhelm away. Listen to discover: The importance of your brand/author story when it comes to promoting your book and bringing readers on the journey - Isabelle believes in a holistic approach to PR and that your readers will want to buy your book if they feel connected to you. What you can do if you're an introvert - both Isabelle and I believe that in today's book-selling climate, you can't hide behind your words and hope the book will sell itself. Having said that, we know it can be daunting, so we discuss practical ways you can make PR manageable for you. How you can be in control of the story you share about yourself in the PR process - including when talking to journalists and publications. And lots more! What I like most about Isabelle is how she truly understands how overwhelming the whole PR and marketing process can be, and she's excellent at breaking it down into manageable and - dare I say - enjoyable - chunks. The stats speak for themselves. When it comes to published non-fiction, female writers are still at a disadvantage. Only 35% of non-fiction prizes are awarded to female writers. Just 26.5% of non-fiction book reviews go to women. Advances tend to be lower, and we're often left off end-of-year ‘bestseller lists'. Research shows that we're often told to ‘leave the big subjects to the men', too! However, the tide is slowly turning. Deep in the bowels of the publishing world, change is afoot. Women are no longer accepting this as the way things are. Bold new thought leaders are emerging. But there's still a long journey ahead. And I'm determined to be part of it. It's why I've dedicated this episode to reminding you of the true benefits of writing that book you've been thinking about and how it can change your life - and your business - in ways you can't even imagine. Listen to discover: How writing a book clarifies what you stand for and helps to position yourself as an authority in your niche. Why your book is more than just a book - and how it can expand your business model, opening the door to collaborations and opportunities that can bring in more income. How stepping into thought leadership empowers you to believe in yourself and your message. Why now really is the time for female thought leaders to publish their books and own their space. Business book boys' club - be gone! And lots more! When your audience sees you confidently stepping into the space that only you can occupy, big things start to happen. And there's no better way of doing that than by bringing all your knowledge, expertise and experience into a business book. Let 2024 be the year you write yours. Enjoy! I'm thrilled to welcome this week's guest author onto the Creating Happy Writers podcast - the rather marvellous Sara Dalrymple. Sara is a sales and business mentor and strategist for small business owners who need more sales, more consistency and more ease. Her 20 years of sales experience and simple, actionable advice have helped hundreds of business owners transform the way they feel about selling and achieve sustainable sales through confident, sleaze-free promotion. And she's packaged all that expertise up into her first best-selling book ‘More Sales Please' - released in January 2024. In our fab conversation, we chat about: The power of authenticity in writing and business - and the importance of showing up online as your true self so that readers and clients feel connected to you. Sara's own writing journey - from winning a book deal off the back of a Book Proposal Challenge to actually sitting down to write the bloomin' thing. What we can all learn from Beyonce and Arnold Schwarzenegger about book promotion and sales - it's not what you might think! And LOADS more. One of my favourite conversations to date - it's packed full of great advice for writers and small business owners everywhere.

As an author, getting feedback on your writing is arguably one of the hardest things to do. What happens if it's awful? How can you get the most out of your editorial experience? What if you disagree with your editor or beta reader? Oh, it's a tricky one, that's for sure. But I've got some advice up my sleeve to help you accept feedback with ease and actually use it to your advantage. During the episode, you'll learn: Why mindset matters most - and how to prepare for a feedback session so you're not stressing yourself out. The types of questions to ask your editor when the time comes - and what you can expect in a feedback session. How to cope if the feedback isn't what you wanted or expected – and how to move on with confidence. And so much more! Feedback is an integral part of writing. Without it, we can't move forward and make our work better. But that doesn't always make it easy to hear - and you're certainly not alone if you feel nervous before your feedback session. Hopefully, this episode will empower you to go into the process confidently. I hope you enjoy listening! I'm thrilled to welcome Anna Zannides onto the podcast for my very first author interview - and what a conversation we had! Anna is a published author, a UK-listed Mindfulness Teacher, and an accredited Life Coach with a background in education. She specialises in working with young people and individuals facing the challenges of cancer, loss and bereavement. Her book ‘How Did I Get Here?' was published in August 2023 and delves into the story of her courageous journey to reclaim her identity, while also serving as a beacon of hope and inspiration for those facing their own life challenges or questioning the path they're on. During our wonderful conversation, we chat about: - Anna's somewhat unplanned journey to being an author and her reasons for writing this particular book. - Why so many of us stop believing in ourselves and in our potential. - Her writing process - which included getting up at 4am - and how her regular practice of solitude helped her creativity. - The challenges she faced being bi-lingual and how she feels it's actually made the book more accessible to others. This really is a brilliant conversation that will have you thinking about the way you view yourself as an author, how self-belief really can make all the difference and why it's so important to see ourselves for who we really are. I'm so happy Anna's was able to share her experience of writing and publishing - and I know her story will really resonate with you, wherever you are at on your own writing journey. Knowing how much of your personal story to use in your business book or self-help book is a tricky one. You're not writing a memoir, after all. But if you don't include it, your book can lose that connection to the reader. So what's the answer? Luckily for you, this week's episode is going to cover all that and more. You'll learn: How to get the right balance between telling your story to motivate and inspire people… and just oversharing stuff that isn't relevant. Why using your story can make your book far more memorable to your readers and will encourage them to recommend it to others. Why shying away from being vulnerable could be the worst mistake you make with your writing and the key role emotions play when attracting readers to your story. And so much more! By the end of the episode, you'll have a far better understanding of the power of story - but most importantly, the power of sharing YOUR story. It really is the fundamental difference between a good book and a great one. I hope you enjoy listening! Ah, writer's block. Seen as a curse or a disease on many unsuspecting writers, it's actually, more often than not, procrastination in disguise - and that's something we've all experienced in one way or another. But I'm here to tell you it doesn't have to be this way, and in this episode, you'll discover five ways to beat the block, take action and get some consistency back into your writing life. We'll dive deep into: Truly understanding why we feel blocked with our writing - because if we understand we can do something about it! All the techniques I've used - based on neuroscience - that have helped me each time ‘the block' has reared its ugly head. How writer's block can be linked to constipation (yup, you read that right!) and how taking time away from your manuscript might actually be what the doctor ordered! And so much more! By the end of the episode, you'll have a better understanding of why we can sometimes feel blocked when it comes to our writing and, most importantly, what the bloody hell to do about it when you feel stuck. Writing the first draft of your business book is often an overwhelming thought. How should you do it? What if it sucks? How can you keep going when it all feels rather shitty? Yes, yes. All of those feelings - and more. Well, this episode is here to stop all that and to give you the confidence you need to tackle your first draft like a pro. In it, you'll discover: What famous authors have done to get past their first draft woes - including Terry Pratchett, Anne Lamott and Greg McKeown - and how we can learn from them. What you should do before you even write a word of your first draft to make the process far more enjoyable - and get the bloody thing written! The one thing I would tattoo on every author's forehead if I could - it's something all my clients say has helped them stop procrastinating and sped up their writing. Where I think research fits into the process and why I never read anything I've written until the very end of my first draft. And so much more! By the end of the episode, you'll have some tools to use to build some writing consistency and get that first draft written - and your business book one step closer to publication. I hope you enjoy listening! Further resources: You can listen to more about writing your first draft by reading this blog post here.
