My first book, “Tame Your Tiger: How to stop your product business eating you alive“ was finally released this week and I couldn't be more excited to share it with you! To really celebrate this momentous occasion, I've decided to spend this episode of The Resilient Retail Game Plan sharing an in-depth, behind-the-scenes look into the book, where I'll discuss my writing process, who the book's for and why I wrote it, as well as the key learnings and takeaways small businesses can hope to find within its pages. But today's podcast comes with one major twist in the form of today's guest - in that today's guest is me! That's right, it's a Resilient Retail role reversal, where I'm being interviewed by none other than fellow author (‘Hype Yourself') and PR expert, Lucy Werner. Throughout our discussion of the development and evolution of the book, we touch on numerous topics such as the lessons that small businesses can learn from big-budget corporate strategy, and the ever-present tension between the creative impetus that leads many people to start their own businesses and the need to be on top of your numbers. We also cover my favourite tip from the book and most importantly deconstruct the three problem areas that constitute an untamed tiger. Unlike TV advertising, PR is suitable for everybody and you don't need a huge budget to be able to execute it. But unlike what social media gurus would have you believe, there's a whole bunch of work you need to do before you should put yourself out there. That's where Lucy Werner comes in. Lucy Werner is the founder of The Wern, an award-winning communications consultancy for startups, entrepreneurs and independents and is the author of the book: “Hype Yourself: A non-nonsense PR toolkit for small businesses”. “You don't need another self-help book for your business, you need a hype-yourself book.” - Lucy Werner Lucy launched her business The Wern in 2015 after being completely disillusioned by how traditional agencies weren't servicing the independents in the way they needed. As you will hear in this week's powerful conversation, Lucy went from making only £500 in her first month, being worried how she would pay her bills, to making £10,000 on her third month, building a team and eventually winning the FSB Micro-Business Award. After trying to read books on PR and realising that the vast majority of the books out there were written by mostly ex journalist men turned PR consultants, she thought there was a gap in the market for a good book written by woman with an extensive background in PR. Hype Yourself was launched and a #HypeYourself revolution was born. The Wern's creative director, Hadrien Chatelet also happens to be the Co-Founder of Lucy's children. So naturally we got into juicy topics such as what is it really like to run a business with your partner. In this episode you will learn: What it takes to write a ground breaking bingeable book The difference between selling and sharing How to build connections and bridges with your audience from day one The most important question you must ask yourself before investing in doing any PR Challenges and rewards of running a business as a parent How to become more visible in your industry The importance of branding and why you should care All the links mentioned in this week's episode as well as all the show notes can be found over at https://theunconventionalists.com/episode143 As always I'd love to hear your biggest takeaway and any follow up questions you might have after listening to our powerful conversation, so please tag me @markleruste or drop me a DM. I can't wait to hear from you, Mark

If you have excuses, be prepared to shed them now... Lucy Werner's book story is quite simply extraordinary. Having entered the 10-day Business Book Proposal Challenge last January on a whim, she went on to win it. She was pregnant at the time so knew things might be tricky, but she wasn't prepared for the full enormity of what the following year threw at her. Nobody could have been.  Despite having every reason not to finish the book, Lucy hit her deadline. And then of course she had to deliver the PR campaign to support it (because you can't credibly publish a book called Hype Yourself without, well, hyping it yourself). And she did that too, with incredible results. Genius PR tips and an honest, challenging look at what it takes to write and promote a book when the world is conspiring against you. Essential listening.
