Today, I am spotlighting a problem so many academics cite as the reason they are delayed in submitting articles or books for publication: perfectionism and self-editing. Specifically, I am addressing the writing stage, where the project is nearly done, but something beyond formatting or copyediting is holding you back from submitting it for review. First, I explore the top three reasons academics find themselves caught in the cycle of perfectionism and self-editing. Then, I encourage you to lower your internal bar and recognize how the excessively high, self-imposed standards academics often set for themselves can hinder publication. Finally, I underline the necessity of feedback and why your aim should be repetition, not perfection. If your struggle to release work is clogging your publication pipeline, this episode is for you! Once you've finished your first draft, you might be wondering what on earth to do next! Do you send it straight to your editor? How can you refine it down to a draft you can be proud of?  In this episode, I share my step-by-step guide to self-editing your manuscript before you send it to a professional. During it, you'll discover: Why it's important to self-edit your work and how to get your manuscript into the best shape possible before sending it to an expert. The five stages to self-editing and how to approach each of them with confidence - plus two additional tips to help you through the process. The right time to send your work to beta readers so you can get that all-important feedback before publication. And LOTS more! Self-editing can feel daunting if you're a first-time author - especially if you don't feel confident in your grammar and punctuation skills. But this isn't about perfection; it's about getting your manuscript into as good a shape as YOU can before handing it over to the pros.  Using the stages I share in this episode, you can be sure your editor will be in the best position to do their magic! I'll never forget the "C" I got on my first English paper in college. I was walking across the quad in the warm eucalyptus-scented California air when I confidently pulled my paper from my bag to look at the comments. The day suddenly slid into grayscale as I saw my grade. After a lifetime of "A" and "Great job" written at the bottom of every paper, fresh from winning the English award at my high school awards night, I was totally unprepared for the many, many scrawled notes about the problems in my paper. I walked into class the next day in a daze, and listened to my professor as he went into a terrifying but effective rant. Apparently I wasn't the only freshmen to confidently turn in a paper that wasn't nearly complex enough. His speech has stuck with me. "Your rough draft," he said at one point. "Is a chair." He scrawled an incredibly messy chair on the whiteboard for emphasis. "And you have to take that chair," he sputtered. "And build a boat!" We students glanced at each other, a little overwhelmed. A boat? Today I want to talk about the chair and the boat, and some of the process that happens in between. Because let's face it, most kids (high school me included) really struggle to understand the work that happens between ROUGH drafts and final drafts. And it's perhaps the most crucial part of the writing process. The strategy we're going to dive into now, self-editing stations, can really help scaffold editing for your students, saving them from falling into the usual traps, allowing you to intervene on behalf of key writing improvements you're trying to help them make BEFORE they turn in their work, and ultimately, saving your commenting time for only the most important personalized suggestions. How can you balance the analytical act of editing with the creative act of writing? I spend a lot of time thinking about editing and considering the best ways to take a draft and turn it into something publishable. That's probably because I spend some of the working days editing the work of other writers and because I've worked as a sub-editor for several newspapers over the years. I learned from editors far more talented than I am about how to take an early draft and turn it into something you can publish in a professional publication. This week, I caught up with a talented developmental editor. Her name is Tiffany Yates Martin. She runs FoxPrint Editorial and is also the author of Intuitive Editing: A Creative and Practical Guide to Revising Your Writing. Tiffany has spent nearly thirty years as an editor in the publishing industry, working with the New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today, to name a few.In the interview, I explained to Tiffany how I currently approach editing or self-editing first drafts of manuscripts and narrative nonfiction. She gave me a few practical tips to help me improve next time. We also discussed how to separate every editor's analytical approach. As an editor, it's your job to figure out what to take out, what to clarify, what to condense, what to improve on, and how to balance all of that with the creative act of writing. I started to explain how I sometimes consider using a template like Blake Snyder's Beat Sheet or the three-act structure when preparing a manuscript to write. Tiffany offered a different approach that could help me embrace the creative act of writing with the analytical act of editing. In this episode, we discuss: The craft of self-editingThe importance of soliciting feedbackThe best ways to get feedback from other readersResources: Visit Tiffany at:www.foxprinteditorial.com orwww.phoebefoxauthor.comSupport the show

This is the second episode in a three-part series of episodes on how to write a query letter. In it, Abigail teaches writers how to write the second paragraph of the query letter, otherwise known as the blurb or back cover copy. The back cover copy is the most important section in a query letter. Abigail shares important details writers need to make it stand out, some including: 3 Key Details Needed in Every Back Cover Copy: Character: Who is the main character? What do they want? What makes them ironic or the least likely hero for the story? Central/Main Plot: What is the main plotline? How does the character's choices impact the plot and vice versa? How can you whittle this down so it's concise and catchy? Hook: What makes your story different from others in the same genre? ***Jessica Faust and James McGowan list and describe these in their awesome Bookends Youtube video. Check out their channel for more amazing writing tips and advice on all things publishing*** James Scott Bell's 3-Sentence Method to Write a Back Cover: Name the main character, their vocation, and their situation when the story opens (also include what they want). But + “when this happens”: Think of the inciting incident of your story, what throws your character's norm off course. Now + “death stakes”: What are the main stakes in your novel—physical, psychological, or professional? How are they spotlighted in your back cover, and why will they be raised as the story moves towards its climax? The Secret: Great to include in your back cover! Example: Abigail analyzes some back cover copy examples to model how a strong back cover includes the details and strategies discussed in this episode. One question has to do with the passive voice: Do I use the passive voice too much? Of course, it's okay to use the passive voice occasionally, but it needs to be strategic. I love learning and gaining insights. And I like sharing what I have learned. I love getting insights and seeing how things fit together and sharing that so others can get that same joy of learning and knowing. But I am guessing like many of you, there are things we learned as a part of our experience and we assume other people must have certainly learned those things as well. Because of this we think they are not that important to share. However, sharing is a big part of our life experience. This week I will continue to share with you some insights I treasure. One such insight was when a colleague made an observation about people's ability and inability to do what he called (social) self-editing. This had to do with knowing your audience and delivering accordingly. I was reminded that day that the delivery method matters. Passion alone is not enough to carry the conversation - we must say things so that people can receive them. If the packaging of the content is not appealing the message may be overlooked. So, this week as you communicate and help others to do the same, let's be reminded about self-editing and taking notice of how the recipient is taking in our message, so our important content can be received.

Today's podcast episode is all about self-editing. We know you might be thinking “why the heck am I doing self-editing, if I'm going to be paying an editor to edit my book?” And Jodi is answering that question in depth today. The main reason that you should self-edit, according to Jodi, is that it will make it easier for your editor to edit the content, and not spend time editing your grammar. Jodi suggests to self edit after every revision. You should be looking for grammatical issues, missing words, repeated phrases and concepts. Here are Jodi's 3 tips for starting your self edits: Take a break between writing and editing (even a week or two). Read your manuscript out loud (read it slowly, word-for-word). Do this in stages (chapter by chapter, revision by revision). Check out this episode for all of Jodi's tips for self editing your book. Download the full transcript here.
