Click Here to ask your book writing and publishing questions!Emma Grey is the Australian author of the international bestseller, THE LAST LOVE NOTE, which was both a Book of the Month and Target Book Club pick, and was praised in Oprah Daily as “relatable, hilarious and charming". She's back this November with her new novel, PICTURES OF YOU — a suspense-filled romance about love and control that explores the way a sparkling relationship can morph into darkness and what might happen with a second chance at first love. In her second appearance on the Write the Damn Book Already podcast, we chatted about Emma's experiences with prologues, her collaborative work with editors (from different countries, no less), and the evolution of her book-writing process. She also reflects on the challenges of writing a second novel after the success of her first, emphasizing the importance of pushing through the "messy first draft." In today's episode of Leveraging Thought Leadership, our host Peter Winick is joined by Bill Sherman, co-host and COO of Leveraging Thought Leadership, Dr. AJ Marsden, an organizational psychologist and statistician, Josh Bernoff, author of Build a Better Business Book, Marissa Eigenbrood, President of Smith Publicity, Inc., Alison Schwartz, COO of Gotham Ghostwriters, and Naren Aryal of Amplify Publishing Group. They discuss the findings of their recent research into the Return on Investment of publishing a business book. In today's presentation we will have a first look at the data that was gathered from hundreds of authors about their experiences getting published, the expenses incurred, and the results the book had on their business. These authors were reached through not only the friends and colleagues at Thought Leadership Leverage but those from many supporting sponsors such as Greenleaf Book Group, Marshall Goldsmith 100 Coaches, Page Two Books, and Zilker Media to name a few. Before the research could even begin we had to ask the questions "What is ROI?  How can you measure it?  How much does an author spend? What is the effect of different publishing models?  And what type of returns do authors see? In answering these questions we explore what the data tells us about the three different publishing models (Traditional, Hybrid, and Self Publishing), the role RP and Ghostwriters can play in the success of each. We also investigate the hard and soft costs involved in writing a book and what the returns could look like.  While many expect the sales of the book to account for much of their profit, we learn how using the book as a key part of a platform and gateway to other parts of the business is where real impact can be found. More questions will be asked and answered in the white paper that will be released in September as we continue to pour over the data. Chapter structure - sounds like a yawnfest, right? But before you assume this is one for the insomniacs out there, let me just say it's something most authors struggle with when attempting to write their first non-fiction/business book in their niche.  Why? Because it's something we assume will be simple, but when we come to do it, it actually feels rather confusing! Fear not, though. Structure is my bag. My bread and butter. My thing. So in this episode, I'm giving you a simple framework for structuring your chapters that will make everything much easier. You'll discover: My 4-step structure to writing great chapters - it's how I write mine and how I advise my authors to write theirs. Why it's important to have each chapter structured in a similar way - hello, readers! How story can be an important part of each chapter you write and why - we want to hook those readers and keep ‘em hooked, baby! And LOTS more! So, if getting your chapter structure nailed down has been a head-scratcher for you - this episode will have you out of the gates and writing in no time. No more overwhelm or confusion. Just a simple, straightforward blueprint for you to follow. Enjoy! My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Alex Sanfilippo, founder of PodMatch, here to chat with me about podcast guesting for authors.  PodMatch, is a software company specifically focused on independent podcast hosts and their guests to elevate their voices through podcasting and be heard. In addition to founding PodMatch, Alex is also the host of the top-rated podcast, Podcasting Made Simple, and is one of the most sought-after educators and public speakers in the podcasting industry. At the age of 10, Alex got his first taste of entrepreneurship when he began selling used golf balls that he would find in the lakes and woods around his neighborhood golf course. Alex immediately realized that he enjoyed generating sales and keeping track of profit margins. (Yes, an odd kid for only 10 years old!) Through many twists and turns, from a job in the aerospace field to church ministry leadership, Alex finally came back to his entrepreneurial roots with the podcast, Creating a Brand, and eventually creating the platform, PodMatch, to help podcasters find guests for their shows. In Alex's own words, “I'm in this industry to serve indie podcasters, and their guests to help independent voices get elevated and, as a result, help them serve the world in the way only they can. I love what I do; I believe I'm now doing what I was created to do – And I'm giving it 110% every day!” You can follow Alex Sanfilippo, Founder of Podmatch, at: www.podmatch.com/free Teri M Brown, Author and Podcast Host: https://www.terimbrown.com FB: @TeriMBrownAuthor IG: @terimbrown_author X: @terimbrown1 #alexsanfilippo #podmatch #podcasting #podcastingforauthors #terimbrownauthor #authorpodcast #onlineforauthors #characterdriven #researchjunkie #awardwinningauthor #podcasthost #podcast #readerpodcast #bookpodcast #writerpodcast #author #books #goodreads #bookclub #fiction #writer #bookreview

Tamron Hall on Why Writing Crime Fiction Is Especially Meaningful to Her + 11 Other Fiction Authors I Love + Two More TV Picks Based on Books

I'd Rather Be Reading

Admittedly, I don't read a ton of fiction, but one fictional character I deeply enjoy is that of Jordan Manning, born from the mind of Tamron Hall, one of my favorite journalists. Tamron dipped her toe into writing novels with the publication of her debut work of fiction, As the Wicked Watch, back in October 2021. Now, today, March 12, book two in the Jordan Manning series is out, and it's a great sophomore effort: Watch Where They Hide, another delicious hit of crime fiction. By the way, Tamron addresses in our conversation whether there will be a third Jordan Manning book and…I'm just going to let her tell you. As our Women in Power series continues, Tamron is certainly among the most powerful women in journalism. Since September 2019, she has hosted her eponymous talk show, The Tamron Hall Show, to much success including two Daytime Emmy Awards. Prior to hosting her own talk show, Tamron was a national news correspondent for NBC News, a daytime anchor for MSNBC, host of the show MSNBC Live with Tamron Hall, and a co-host of the third hour of the Today Show. Tamron's new book, Watch Where They Hide, touches on domestic violence—a subject that, through her sister, Tamron knows all too well, unfortunately. In 2004, Tamron's sister Renate was murdered after experiencing domestic violence. Though police officers originally informed Tamron's family of their belief that they knew who murdered Renate, that person was never charged, and the case remains unsolved today. Tamron has made domestic violence awareness and ending domestic violence a cornerstone of her life since, and domestic violence is a part of the story of Marla Hancock in Watch Where They Hide. In the book Marla, a stay-at-home mother, disappears not long after leaving her abusive husband and moving to Indiana with her sister, Shelly, who knows Marla would never leave without bringing her kids with her. Shelly fears that Marla's disappearance won't get the attention it deserves, or worse, will go unsolved—see the parallels here?—so, a few weeks after filing a missing person's report, she enlists the help of TV journalist Jordan Manning, and the twist and turns from there will keep you on the edge of your seat. Plus, stick around after our conversation for two more upcoming television shows based on books to look out for, as well as 11 fiction writers I can't get enough of.   By Tamron Hall: As the Wicked Watch Watch Where They Hide   The entire collections of Emily Giffin Rebecca Wells Kathryn Stockett Fannie Flagg Terry McMillan Plum Sykes Candace Bushnell Taylor Jenkins Reid Carley Fortune Lauren Weisberger Jennifer Weiner   + television picks! Read: Chasing Hillary by Amy Chozick | Watch: The Girls on the Bus on Max, out March 14 Read: A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles | Watch: A Gentleman in Moscow on Paramount+, out March 29

Victoria Brookman's debut novel, Burnt Out was published by Harper Collins in March 2022. It's about a writer called Calida who loses everything in a bushfire right after her husband has left her. And she really hits rock bottom. After a very public rant that goes viral, her life changes dramatically. Victoria is an author, activist and academic and lives in the Blue Mountains. Her resume as a political staffer and founder of feminist organisations speaks to her passion for women's and human rights. Victoria studied English and creative writing and is currently completing a doctorate and working on her second (and third) novel. In this episode Pam chats to Victoria about how she found the whole debut fiction experience, the whole process of putting yourself out there, along with the craft, heart and business of writing. Our last episode for season 3 is a Flash Fiction episode with no writing prompt, so our authors were free to write whatever they wanted, limited only by their own imagination. And here we are, humbled and massively impressed by the 4 stories being read to you today:    We kick off with a story titled The Last Mascara, written for us and read by Carolyn Ward-Daniels. Followed by Billy's Law, written and read for us by TJ Spencer. Jayne Love brings us Brave Bear, her first story for Bare Books. Read by Daizi Rae. And we round off the season with Topless Tease, written and read by Dean Wrigley.  you could guest host on a future podcast with your own flash fiction story. Indie writers old and new have gotten involved with the podcast. Huge thanks to each and every one of you. The anthology of your stories will be published later this year. Synopsis Even though empathy and sympathy both involve your “feelings” about your readers, they refer to two distinctly different emotions. As an author, and book marketer, (and as an emotionally mature adult that is trying to help people) you must genuinely understand the difference. Here is a short discussion about the importance of empathy, and how it relates to your book sales. What You Will Learn In This Post 1. You will learn the difference between empathy and sympathy. 2. You will learn why understanding the difference will help you sell more books. 3. You will learn how and why empathy for your readers will improve your book sales. Share This Image On Your SitePlease include attribution to https://kunzonpublishing.com/ with this graphic. Introduction Do you truly understand who you're writing for? And not in a superficial way. Knowing is the difference between building a devoted audience of followers, readers, and book buyers that you help, and your time, words, and efforts being wasted and helping no one. The difference here is that empathy is a major ingredient to your success as an author. Successful Non-Fiction Authors Don't Confuse “Empathy” With “Sympathy” Even though empathy and sympathy both involve your “feelings” about your readers, they refer to two distinctly different emotions. As an author, and book marketer, (and as an emotionally mature adult that is trying to help people) you must genuinely understand the difference. "Authors: If you learn how to “walk in your reader's shoes,” you WILL sell more books!" (Tweet) Therefore, here is a very quick definition of empathy and sympathy to get us started: Definition # 1. Empathy: refers to your ability to “walk in your reader's shoes.” You're trying to get into their heads and understand their reality, feelings, and motivations. The more intimate knowledge, or understanding, that you have about their motivations, their questions, their confusions, and their desires, the more you and your book will be truly able to help them find what they need and want. Deep down, you must know your audience – and you can't fake it. Definition # 2. Sympathy: refers to the compassion, sorrow, or pity, that you have for your readers. With sympathy, you might have compassion for your readers, but you don't know what it's like to honestly and sincerely “walk in your reader's shoes.” Empathy and sympathy typically go hand-in-hand. And, sympathy might have been an initial motivating factor to get you to write your book. But, simply having sympathy with your readers does nothing to help them find answers and solutions. And sympathy alone certainly won't help you sell more books. Thank you to Joel Friedlander of TheBookDesigner.com for linking to my blog post from his blog Carnival Of The Indies #99 Now, you might be asking yourself, “How Can Empathy For My Readers Really Improve My Book Sales?” Empathy can be shown for the readers, and can improve book sales at the same time, in two easily achievable ways: 1. Having Empathy Before You Write Developing empathy for your reading audience, before you write your book, also forces you to think about exactly who you are writing for. Who are you trying to help? Who can you relate to? Identifying your reading audience is imperative if you ever hope to build an audience that wants to listen to you, and read your books. Zeroing in on this specific group of people, and building an audience who knows what you write about, and what you are about personally, and what knowledge you have, and how generous you are with your knowledge, will help you to build an audience that will continue to grow over the long-term. This is how you build a continuous stream of income from your writing. "Successful Non-Fiction Authors Don't Confuse “Empathy” With “Sympathy.” (Tweet) 2. Having Empathy While You Write When writing non-fiction with the intention to share your knowledge and experiences with the...

Synopsis Testimonials from a wide variety of people are a great way to bring credibility, exposure (eyeballs), and higher sales for your book. Here are eleven sources to find free testimonials that you can use to help promote your book on your website, and in all of your marketing materials. What You Will Learn In This Post 1. You will learn where to get free and powerful testimonials for your book. 2. You will learn about the power of a testimonial to bring credibility, exposure, and higher sales for your book. 3. You will learn that getting a variety of testimonials from many different types of people will greatly enhance your credibility, and your book sales. Introduction Testimonials are a great way to bring credibility, wider exposure, and higher sales for your book. Nothing helps to give your book greater and faster attention than a positive quote from a prominent figure or celebrity who is knowledgeable in the field of your book's subject matter. Thank you to Joel Friedlander of TheBookDesigner.com for linking to this article from his blog Carnival Of The Indies #75 But regular people can also be a great source of honest, credible, and powerful testimonials. Using a variety of testimonials from many different types of people, celebrities and non-celebrities, in different professions and industries, will greatly enhance your credibility, and your book sales. Here are eleven sources to find free testimonials that you can use to help promote your book on your website, and in all of your marketing materials: Source # 1. Teachers, professors, educators: Think about some of your favorite educators that you had in school, especially the ones that taught a subject similar to your book's subject. Make sure that you also consider the educators with impressive titles, like “Dean”, and “Chairman”, etc. Many in this group will also have been published, so make sure that their most famous, or most successful, or most recent book title is attached to their name. Source # 2. Authors, bloggers: If you have already written your non-fiction book, you will already know who these people are. Email them at their publisher or at their blog and very nicely ask for a testimonial. Source # 3. Industry insiders: Big shots within your industry can be difficult to get testimonials from, but you should try anyway. These will be much easier to get if you are socially active within your industry. But anyone else within your industry that has good accomplishments, or many years on the job, or authored a book, will be just as good for your needs. Source # 4. Professional organization leaders: This group is worth pursuing.
