It is important that anti-war and anti-imperialist forces in the Americas remain especially vigilant. This webinar will highlight the popular struggles being waged for national liberation and the efforts being made by the U.S. imperialism and other colonial powers to subvert those efforts. Trump, the Biden administration has doubled down on the deadliest failures of the U.S. COVID response. The U.S. capitalist state is refusing to put modest safety protocols and lockdown procedures in place despite the skyrocketing infection rate of the even more deadly and contagious Delta variant. Meanwhile, President Biden and other U.S. lawmakers are hell bent on blaming the COVID catastrophe on China. The U.S. deliberately sabotaged a collective effort to learn more about the origins of the novel coronavirus by calling for the World Health Organization to focus solely on the laboratory in Wuhan, China. China has asked, why not also look at Fort Dietrich and 200 other U.S. labs? Why not investigate the earlier outbreaks before Wuhan in Italy, Spain, and France? Why is the U.S. choosing competition and protecting patents over global cooperation? What is billionaire Bill Gates' role in all of this? Join revolutionaries in the U.S. and China for this necessary pushback on "lab leak theory" and the Cold War being waged against China and the entire global working class. Donate $1 per month to Essential Dissent via Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/EssentialDissent Audio of Professor Jason W. Moore's talk at the 2021 Real Abstractions web conference, hosted by Foreign Objekt. In this talk, Jason W. Moore argues that Man and Nature – operationalized through successive Christianizing, Civilizing, and Developmentalist Projects – are ruling abstractions constitutive of the capitalist world-ecology. In this light, Man and Nature are not only fundamental epistemological categories, but also instruments of bourgeois hegemony on a world-scale. (Hence, successive world hegemonies shape and are shaped by successive Civilizing Projects, with distinctive renderings of Man and Nature.) In this light, civilizational fetishism – embodying an ethos of planetary management – appears as the logical and historical precondition for commodity fetishism, not least through the Naturalization of imperialism, racism, and sexism, beginning in the long sixteenth century. Giving special attention to the post-1968 New Environmental Imaginary, Moore shows how the ruling abstraction Nature has been pivotal to the success of neoliberal rule and the climate crisis. One, in 1776, led to the formation of the USA, which went on to dominate the African Slave Trade. The other, ignited in 1791, led to the Haitian Revolution, which precipitated a general crisis of the entire slave system that could be resolved only with its collapse — not least in the U.S. itself in 1865. Unfortunately, those who feasted on free labor have not forgotten and will never forgive Haiti, including today when the USA, Canada and the European Union (especially France) continue to interfere maliciously in Haiti's internal affairs. This vaccine apartheid will continue to cause hundreds of thousands of avoidable deaths of people across the world. A prime example of this capitalist-produced vaccine apartheid is in India, which has set world records for daily COVID infections in the past several weeks, despite the existence of billions of doses of vaccines across the world. India is one of the world’s top pharmaceutical producers, yet without key imports from the U.S., it cannot produce what is needed to vaccinate its 1.3 billion people. Meanwhile, over 220,000 people in India have died and the death rate continues to soar. Vaccine inequality is perhaps most stark in occupied Palestine. Israel has fully vaccinated almost 60% of its population, giving it the world’s highest vaccination rate, yet the Palestinian Health Authority reported that less than 3% of Palestinians are immunized due to vaccine shortages. The Biden Administration and other imperialist countries promise to share their vaccines. The US alone controls over quarter of the world’s short-term supply of vaccines. Yet the US and others continue a policy of vaccine nationalism, prioritizing the lives of those inside the imperialist countries over those in oppressed nations.A few pharmaceutical monopolies limit the means for making more vaccines, while taking in billions of dollars of public subsidies. Property rights are in direct conflict with human rights to health care. Join Vijay Prashad, an Indian historian, editor and journalist who writes on vaccine nationalism and the need for a people’s vaccine as we discuss how to fight vaccine apartheid. The panelists will discuss and critique political and ideological falsehoods and fabrications in the continuing Cold War waged by the U.S. and NATO against Russia--both historical anti-communism and the more intense lies in the current antagonism in the US drive for global hegemony. This panel explores the Green New Deal as a political battlefield, a space within which different ideas, proposals, and possibilities for managing the future come into play. We explore the role of agriculture, the global south, resource extraction, and paths to a sustainable and just future in light of the reshaping of the political battlefield through the Green New Deal proposals. Buy me a coffee ($3): https://ko-fi.com/essentialdissent Panelists: Eli J. Campbell, Daniella Medina, Jill Stein, David Oks With the objective of sparking public debate before the 2020 presidential election, this panel will consider a direct action solution to the student debt crisis: Activists from four generations will discuss and envision the strategy of an organized student debt boycott, using our collective burden as leverage against the American ruling class, and global capitalism itself. Every day that we continue to perform the status quo is time that cannot be recovered; the struggle for human survival past this century demands that we act now, and when all else has failed, we must consider revolutionary action. Throughout history, there have been countless movements of working class people demanding the cancellation of usurious, unpayable debts to the ruling class, often accompanied by general strikes that disrupt everyday life. A movement of American students, graduates, and teachers, engaging in civil disobedience and honoring the ancient tactic of an organized debt strike, could change the power dynamics in the fights for student debt cancellation and universal free higher education, at the national and state levels. A student debt boycott could also help unite the multitude of intersecting movements for social justice in an intergenerational coalition that is not dependent on electoral politics to build power. For this strategy to be fairly considered, the American public must be made aware of what has been hidden in plain sight: For many years, the largest student loan servicing companies (Navient, Nelnet/Great Lakes, PHEAA) have been legally gambling with federal student loan debt, despite being under contract with the Department of Education. Just in the decade since 2009, a trillion dollars worth of federal student debt has accumulated; in the same time, the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere rose from roughly 390 to 410 ppm (parts per million), a trend that will define the remainder of our lives. All the while, this immoral and unregulated loan servicing industry has issued billions of dollars in Student Loan Asset-Backed Securities (SLABS) every year, which are sold to investors and traded in speculative financial markets. Generations of Americans are being stifled by permanent indebtedness and a declining standard of living, but a small number of corporations and their CEOs are making extraordinary profits capitalizing on the high interest rates paid by student borrowers. Obscured by fake economics and bipartisan political corruption, a student loan default crisis looms in the near future, which will inevitably cause the collapse of the SLABS market, decades before these assets will reach their final maturity. In the pursuit of infinite wealth regardless of the human cost, capitalism has burdened students with unpayable debt, but also provided them the means to crash the system and disrupt business as usual. This panel will consider the notion that accelerating the default crisis to put direct financial pressure on the student loan industry may be both justified and necessary in order to force Congress to solve this crisis, liberate 44 million Americans from debt and empower them to transform society, and provide for the future security of American students.
