"Sie werden mich aufhängen" soll der russische Machthaber Wladimir Putin zu Vertrauten gesagt haben, das schreibt zumindest "The Economist". Dabei geht es um das Minimalziel, die Eroberung des Donbass, die er unbedingt benötige, um seinen Krieg zu rechtfertigen. Kann an dieser Erzählung wirklich etwas dran sein? Benötigt Putin diesen kleinen Sieg, um nicht selbst in Gefahr zu geraten, oder ist seine Machtfülle inzwischen so groß, dass er seinem Volk nahezu alles verkaufen kann? Das analysiert heute der Buchautor und Korrespondent der Zeit in Moskau, Michael Thumann.

Die USA haben einen neuen Vermittlungsversuch im Ukraine-Krieg gestartet. Die Unterhändler Steve Witkoff und Jared Kushner waren zu Verhandlungen in Russland und der Ukraine. Die Ergebnisse sind laut Ex-Nato-General Erhard Bühler überschaubar: "Das beste Ergebnis war wohl, dass die Kiewer einen relativ ruhigen Sonntag hatten. Ohne Luftalarm." Die US-Unterhändler sprachen nach den Gesprächen von Fortschritten und forderten trilaterale Verhandlungen zwischen der Ukraine, Russland und den USA. Laut Bühler ist aber nicht zu erkennen, dass Russland von seinen bisherigen Kriegszielen abrückt. Es gehe Moskau darum, dass die Ukraine noch mehr Gebiete abtrete, ihre Souveränität verliere und eine russlandhörige Regierung erhalte.Die aktuelle militärische Lage: Russland kommt in der Ostukraine weiter nur langsam voran. Bühler erklärt, die russische Armee habe im August gut 50 Quadratkilometer erobert – über die gesamte Front in der Ukraine verteilt. Nach Berechnungen des Institute for the Study of War würde Russland bei dieser Vormarschgeschwindigkeit noch bis ins Jahr 2032 brauchen, um alleine den Donbass komplett zu erobern. Natürlich seien das plakative und theoretische Berechnungen, so Bühler. Sie machten aber deutlich, wie langsam Russland derzeit vorankomme. Erfolge gebe es nur an einigen Frontabschnitten zu vermelden. So rückten die Russen weiter langsam bei Slowjansk und Dobropillja vor. Im Gegenzug seien die Ukrainer nördlich von Kupjansk erfolgreich. Dort sei der russische Brückenkopf über den Fluss Oskil geteilt worden. Auch bei Lyman laufe seit Wochen ein ukrainischer Gegenangriff, der einige Erfolge bringe.Außerdem besprechen Host Tim Deisinger und Bühler in dieser Folge des Podcasts "Was tun, Herr General?" die Luftangriffe auf beiden Seiten. On this day, 11 July 1989, a huge strike began of miners in the Soviet Union demanding better food supplies, cleaner working conditions, adequate housing, better care of the environment in mining areas, and rights to share management of the mines.In March, two brief strikes occurred at the Lidiieka and Kirov mines in Donbass, Ukraine. In July a much bigger strike began in both the Donbass and the Kuznetsky basin in Western Siberia. Within a few days, the strike had grown to 100,000 workers, and threatened to become a general strike when sympathy strikes began.Most miners had returned to work by July 25, after officials agreed to most of their demands. Malheureusement, aucun signe distinctif personnel ni document d'identité n'a été retrouvé. » Oleksiy Yukov et son équipe – une dizaine de militaires – parcourent le champ de bataille au péril de leur vie, pour en extraire les corps des soldats. Depuis quatre ans, plus de 3 000 dépouilles ont ainsi été exhumées du front ukrainien, « de nos propres mains », nous explique-t-il, certaines parfois portées à dos d'homme. Une mission devenue presque impossible aujourd'hui. « Si tu sors, tu ne reviendras pas » « L'arme la plus effrayante que j'ai vue dans cette guerre, ce sont les FPV, les drones », lâche Oleksiy Yukov. Ces engins kamikazes sont équipés d'une caméra qui permet à l'ennemi de traquer une cible à distance. Ils pullulent désormais à proximité de la ligne de front : « L'épuisement émotionnel arrive quand tu n'as pas la possibilité de récupérer les corps. Quand tu les vois, mais que tu ne peux rien faire. Tu ne peux tout simplement pas sortir de ta position pour aller les chercher et les évacuer. Il y a des drones, le terrain est à découvert, et tu comprends que si tu sors, tu ne reviendras pas. » De sa voix douce, à peine audible, Arthur, 29 ans, le regard dissimulé derrière ses lunettes de combat, nous détaille son travail : « Sur la ligne de contact, quand c'est possible, une voiture nous dépose.
