Formerly in the 1970s and 80s he was a comic and political satirist on the comedy circuit, once appearing on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show. He said the Democrats are moving right, betraying the real left. Then Shane and Jamarl talked to modern monetary theory expert Steve Grumbine, who began by saying that he thinks alternative currencies such as bitcoin are less currencies and more commodities. Then the conversation turned to how the Democrats are managing Joe Biden in 2020, and Steve agreed with Jamarl that not running on a strong Medicare For All policy platform is unsatisfactory and said that as a voter, not just a policy person, he finds the notion that the Democrats are the only alternative for progressives to be offensive. Then they discussed modern monetary theory and Steve said that a lot of people have misconceptions about the way money works in his opinion and that when the government approves a spending policy, it prints the money to cover that spending, which creates value in the marketplace. In the second hour, they were joined by Demetrius Minor, who said that even as someone who is broadly on the right, he found the Democratic National Convention more compelling than the Republicans', saying that he did not think the conventions would really move the needle either way for anybody but the hard-core political junkie. He expanded on that to say that he found Donald Trump's speech to be too long. Demetrius said that as a minister, he thinks neither side of the political aisle is doing a good job bringing the country together about the nationwide protests, and he feels that both Donald Trump and Joe Biden are incapable of taking the biblical advice to be quick to listen and slow to speak. In the third hour, the hosts were joined by Randy Credico. Jamarl said he didn't like the way that previous guests had been. Randy said he was lied about and he felt like a fall guy. Randy said Roger Stone's accusation that he had impersonated Roger was false and said that Stone had no connection to Wikileaks and that Randy considers Stone to be a showboater. He also said that filmmaker David Lugo slandered him. Randy discussed the history of his relationship with Roger Stone, and he said Stone supported Randy when he ran as a Libertarian candidate for Senate and said that they got along for the most part personally. Randy also discussed the Black Lives Matter protests and Randy said people have had enough.

Maram was sharply critical of President Trump's policy but said his saving grace is that he is blunt and does not put a fake humanitarian face on it. She argued that Biden is more dangerous because Democrats attempt to obfuscate the real goals and pointed out that a Biden policy advisor had already talked about a more "humanitarian" approach. They also discussed the pivotal role that Israel has played in the Syrian conflict. In the second hour, Shane and Jamarl spoke with Mark Sleboda about the Russian government's response to the COVID-19 crisis. On today's episode of Loud & Clear, Brian Becker and John Kiriakou are joined by Jim Kavanagh, the editor of thepolemicist.net, and Sputnik news analyst and producer Nicole Roussell. There was a bare-fisted street brawl in Las Vegas last night, and a Democratic presidential debate broke out. Indeed, the New York Post called last night’s debate “the single best debate in the history of American politics.” That may be a stretch, but Mike Bloomberg looked unprepared, angry, and defensive. Elizabeth Warren looked like the big winner of the evening, as she relentlessly pummelled Bloomberg. Pete Buttigieg seemed to hold his own, and Bernie Sanders appears to have come out on top with no real damage other than over his medical records. Thursday’s weekly series “Criminal Injustice” is about the most egregious conduct of our courts and prosecutors and how justice is denied to so many people in this country. Paul Wright, the founder and executive director of the Human Rights Defense Center and editor of Prison Legal News (PLN), joins the show. One of Julian Assange’s London-based attorneys said yesterday that President Trump had authorized former Congressman Dana Rohrbacher to tell Assange that he would be pardoned if he showed proof that Russia was not behind the hack of DNC computers in 2016. Assange has repeatedly said over the years that no state actor was involved. But Rohrbacher issued a statement several hours later saying the report was not true, and that he had made the offer on his own volition. Brian and John speak with independent journalist Diani Barreto, and Joe Lauria, the editor-in-chief of Consortium News, founded by the late Robert Parry. Roger Stone was sentenced today to 40 months in a federal court in Washington DC. Judge Amy Berman Jackson sided with prosecutors in their demand for real prison time for Stone, and she read several of Stone’s text messages to his friend Randy Credico into the record, including messages where Stone threatened Credico and his dog. This is despite the fact that Credico wrote to the judge and asked not to give Stone any prison time at all, saying that he never took Stone’s threats seriously. Coleen Rowley, a former FBI special agent who in 2002 was named Time Magazine person of the year along with two other whistleblowers, joins the show. Fighting broke out in Syria’s Idlib Province today after two Turkish soldiers were killed and five wounded in a Syrian Army air attack. The Turks responded, saying later that they killed more than 50 Syrian troops. A Turkish government spokesman said that move does not constitute a Turkish attack on Idlib, while a Russian government spokesman said that both sides need to stand down. Meanwhile, reports circulated that were denied by Turkey that it had asked the US to deploy two Patriot missile batteries on its southern border to protect Turkish troops from Syrian air attacks. Ambassador Peter Ford, the former UK Ambassador to Syria, joins Brian and John. The U.S. government issued harsh new restrictions on Chinese public media outlets this week that would put them in the same legal category as foreign missions. This dramatic move is being denounced as yet another escalation of the war on alternative media. In retaliation, several Wall Street Journal reporters in China had their credentials revoked. KJ Noh, a peace activist and scholar on the geopolitics of Asia, and a frequent contributor to Counterpunch and Dissident Voice, joins the show.A regular Thursday segment deals with the ongoing militarization of space. As the US continues to withdraw from international arms treaties, will the weaponization and militarization of space bring the world closer to catastrophe? Brian and John speak with Prof. Karl Grossman, a full professor of journalism at the State University of New York, College at Old Westbury and the host of a nationally aired television program focused on environmental, energy, and space issues, and with Bruce Gagnon, coordinator of the Global Network Against Weapons & Nuclear Power in Space and a contributor to Foreign Policy In Focus.

LRC Presents: All the President's Lawyers

Impeachment, the centerpiece of President Trump’s legal problems, is wrapping up. But the House will continue to investigate him on various fronts. There is ongoing litigation over efforts to obtain his financial records. The House could also try to subpoena John Bolton, even though the Senate declined to. And what’s the deal with Trump’s Department of Justice making arguments about remedies for disobeying subpoenas that are the exact opposite of his impeachment defense team? What’s next? Plus: Roger Stone’s sentencing approaches and the public (including Randy Credico) weighs in; prosecutors retreat from recommending prison time for Michael Flynn; Igor Fruman and Lev Parnas have a trial date, just weeks before the general election; and E. Jean Carroll seeks the president’s DNA.

On this edition of Parallax Views, we return to the subject of political "dirty trickster" Roger Stone, whose trial has just been set for November 5th. Who is the "real" Roger Stone behind the public image? Joining us to help answer that question is the controversial former Roger Stone collaborator Robert Morrow, who co-authored The Clintons' War on Women with Stone. Robert tells the story of how he came to work with Roger Stone through the book The Man Who Killed Kennedy: The Case Against LBJ. Robert then describes how he came to co-write The Clintons' War on Women with Stone. From there we discuss how the case of Jeffrey Epstein led to a falling out between Stone and Morrow. Morrow discusses how behind Stone's charming personality is a narcissist with a low self-esteem who seek to curry favor with larger-than-life figures like Donald Trump. He dishes the dirt on Stone's cheating on his wife, his little discussed anti-Semitism, and his bullying of various figures in the JFK assassination community. Additionally we discuss some periphery figures in the Stone saga like Jerome Corsi, Randy Credico, and Saint John Hunt. In the end Morrow has a very harsh critique of Stone that pulls no punches. And a story about Stone and Ann Coulter that will keep you from sleeping for weeks. All in all it's an episode that you won't want to miss if you want an insight into the mind of Roger Stone from someone who worked with him. This week, we start out talking about “the grind,” meaning both the grind of burnt coffee that made former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz rich enough to mull over running for president this week and the daily workplace drudgery millennials are now pretending to enjoy as they shout “secure the bag” into the high heavens. Our main story this week is the newest development in the Mueller investigation: the arrest of Roger Stone, the infamously foppish former lobbyist. We discuss the non-dog-friendly threats he made against Randy Credico, his supposed liaison with WikiLeaks, as well as the right-wing outcry against the perceived police brutality Stone endured during his arrest. In pop culture, we’re staying in the Stone Zone to discuss the Netflix documentary Get Me Roger Stone and evaluating whether or not Roger lives up to the hype. We also denounce the resurrection of the Dude, Jeff Bridges’ famous character from The Big Lebowski, and his sudden appreciation of Stella Artois as teased in a preview for a soulless upcoming SuperBowl ad. Lastly, we dabble in some visual art appreciation as we evaluate the hand-drawn political cartoons (for lack of a better term) that Jim Carrey has been posting to Twitter lately, and towards which Jerry Saltz turned his eye for a banger of an interview in Vulture with the Ace Ventura actor. Lastly, in story time this week, Sam struggles to prove his innocence as he explains why he was suspended from elementary school multiple times before the age of 10.   Chiqui Cartagena: The Public Policy Implications of Hispanic Marketing (Ep. 164) Chiqui Cartagena joined Joe Miller to discuss the public policy implications of Hispanic marketing amidst an increased demand for Latino data. Bio Chiqui Cartagena (@ChiquiCartagena) is the author of Latino Boom II and most recently served as senior vice president of the Political & Advocacy Group at Univision Communications Inc., the leading media company serving Hispanic America. At Univision, she was responsible for increasing the understanding of the importance of Hispanic voter and the key political issues that affect them among key political constituents across the country. In 2014, Ms. Cartagena was named one of Campaigns & Elections "50 Influencers". In 2013, she was recognized with a Multiethnic TV Leadership Award from Broadcasting & Cable magazine and in 2012, Cartagena received the ADCOLOR® Legend Award in recognition of her tireless efforts in leading the conversation about the Hispanic market. In 2007, she was named the Hispanic Direct Marketing Professional of the Year by the Direct Marketing Association. And finally, she is the author of Latino Boom II, Catch the Biggest Wave Since the Baby Boom, her second book on the Hispanic market which was published in 2013. Ms. Cartagena is a Hispanic media and marketing pioneer with 25 years of experience developing, launching, and leading some of America’s most successful Spanish-language consumer magazines, including People en Español and TV Guide en Español. Ms. Cartagena, a graduate of the University of Miami, is a member of the Awards Committee for National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences and lives in New York City. Resources Latino Boom Nielsen LatinX The Next 100 Years: A Forecast for the 21st Century by George Friedman News Roundup Can Facebook overcome its woes with Zuckerberg and Sandberg still leading the company? Facebook, which has lost about $100 billion in market value since March, can’t seem to right itself after a year of the Cambridge Analytica and election interference debacle. The UK Parliament got hold of senior level communications from a company in the U.S. called Six4Thirty which is suing Facebook. Six4Thirty, whose core business model was scanning Facebook data for bikini photos, obtained the communications in the discovery process in an attempt to establish that Facebook knew about the loophole it used to obtain Facebook’s users data, which was allegedly the same loophole that Cambridge Analytica used. Some of the communications are said to be from Mark Zuckerberg himself. So normally, the communications would be shielded from disclosure as the matter is being litigated. But it just so happens that Damian Collins, the Chair of the Parliament’s Culture, Media and Sports select committee, caught wind of the fact that one of Six4Thirty’s founders was in London—bringing the company within the UK’s jurisdiction. So that enabled Collins to seize the documents by sending a Serjeant at Arms to the founder’s hotel room and requiring him to turn over the documents within 2 hours or face a fine or potential jail time. So there’s that. And as far as Facebook’s hiring of a lobbying firm that allegedly worked to play into anti-Semitism against George Soros, Facebook’s head of public policy Elliot Schrage announced in an internal memo that he was responsible for hiring the firm. However, he said that it was never his intention to play into anti-semitism. Facebook COO Cheryl Sandberg weighed in in a comment, saying that she was ultimately responsible. Schrage has been planning to leave the company for some time, and he will be replaced by former UK Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg. Calls by some shareholders and others for Mark Zuckerberg and Cheryl Sandberg to step down from at least some of their responsibilities has fallen on deaf ears. As Zuckerberg said in a CBS Business Interview that, while he apologized for the company’s woes, said that stepping down or replacing Sandberg is “not the plan”. Can Amazon be humbled by pushback from its workforce? Amazon has huge, global aspirations. But will the company go as far as it needs to in order to resolve internal labor disputes? In the U.S., Amazon raised its minimum wage to $15 per hour but eliminated other perks, including employee benefits. But on Black Friday, thousands of European workers went on strike, demanding better pay and working conditions. All of this is happening amidst Amazon’s aggressive expansion efforts beyond ecommerce. For example, the company is bidding for 21st Century Fox’s 22 Regional Sports assets—including YES TV which broadcasts the New York Yankees. The Wall Street Journal also reports that Amazon is now the Number 3 digital advertising platform, behind just Google and Facebook, with ad sales growth projected to be at over 400% between 2017 and 2020, way ahead of second-place Tencent in China whose ad sales growth is projected to be at just under 200%. Roger Stone crony Jerome Corsi says he won’t take FBI plea deal Conspiracy theorist and Roger Stone ally Jermone Corsi told CNN that Robert Mueller offered him a plea deal on one count of perjury connected with statements Corsi made saying that he had no communication with WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. Trump confidante Stone himself said that he’d never had direct communication with Assange either, saying that he got all of his info through a backchannel alleged to be New York radio personality Randy Credico, which Credico has denied. Russian hacking is resurgence American officials and security firms are reporting that Russian hacking efforts are on an uptick following the U.S. midterm elections. The hackers are apparently trying to test the waters with the new Congress coming in. Funeral services were held today for the victims of the anti-Semitic massacre at Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh as the city and the country mourns the loss of life in this brazen terror attack carried out by a white supremacist. Donald Trump is also on his way to the city, as he continues to face criticism over the impact of his rhetoric on the political climate in the country. Tuesday’s weekly series is False Profits—A Weekly Look at Wall Street and Corporate Capitalism with Daniel Sankey. Financial policy analyst Daniel Sankey joins the show. President Trump said in an HBO documentary that will be broadcast Sunday that he would seek to end birthright citizenship by executive order, that is automatic American citizenship for any person born in the United States. Apparently he hasn’t bothered to read the 14th Amendment to the Constitution. Brian and John speak with Juan Carlos Ruiz, cofounder of New Sanctuary Coalition. A judge in Ecuador has ruled against WikiLeaks co-founder Julian Assange, who had contested new rules imposed on him in the country's embassy in London. The judge said a requirement to pay for internet use and clean up after his cat did not violate his right to asylum. Assange had argued that the conditions violated his "fundamental rights and freedoms", and were intended to force him to leave. His lawyers have appealed against the ruling. Randy Credico, an activist, a comedian, and the former director of the William Moses Kunstler Fund for Racial Justice, joins the show. Maria Butina, a Russian graduate student being held without bail for conspiracy to fail to register as a foreign agent, is now being accused of being involved in cyber warfare, according to the Associated Press. The only problem is that Butina WASN’T involved in cyber warfare. When she was studying at American University in Washington, one of her professors asked her to gather information on the cyberdefenses of US non-profits for a study he was doing. That’s it. Jim Kavanagh, the editor of ThePolemicist.net, joins Brian and John. The New York Times reported yesterday that South Korean President Moon Jae-in is succeeding where all of his predecessors have failed — in engaging North Korea and convincing that country to give up its nuclear weapons program. But the article isn’t complimentary. It quotes a South Korean newspaper as saying that Moon is Kim’s most effective spokesman. And it quotes an American think tank analyst saying Moon is a “Bad moon on the rise,” quoting an old Creedence Clearwater Revival song. Simone Chun, a fellow at the Korea Policy Institute and a member of the Korean Peace Network, joins the show.Midterm elections are one week away, so today the hosts look at how an offhand comment may affect them. Hillary Clinton told an audience in New York a few days ago that she still would like to be president. When asked if she would run again, she said no, paused, said no again, and then said that, well, sure, she’d like to be president. The interviewer says that the public has overreacted to the statement. But Clinton supporters relished the notion of another campaign against Donald Trump. None of them detonated and no one was injured. Why are incidents like this so common in the United States? The hosts look at the issue of political polarization, factional struggles among political elites and their impact on the larger population and the history and the role violence has played during periods of political turmoil and indeed within the foundational structures of what became the United States. Wednesday’s regular segment, Beyond Nuclear, is about nuclear issues, including weapons, energy, waste, and the future of nuclear technology in the United States. Kevin Kamps, the Radioactive Waste Watchdog at the organization Beyond Nuclear, producer of Loud & Clear Nicole Roussell, and Sputnik news analyst Walter Smolarek, join the show. In our continuing daily coverage of the midterm elections, the hosts take a look at Medicaid. Medicaid expansion is on the ballot in some of the unlikeliest places this election, places like Idaho, Utah, Montana, and Nebraska. These are states whose populations were no fans of Obamacare, but many people there have come to the conclusion that the only way to cover gaps in health care is to expand the federal program long attacked by conservatives. Brian and John speak with Leo Cuello, an attorney and the director of health policy for the National Health Law Program. The United Nations Undersecretary General for Humanitarian Affairs said yesterday that as many as 14 million Yemenis--half of the country’s population--is at risk of starvation because of Saudi Arabia’s war on that country. Mark Lowcock said, “There is a clear and present danger of an imminent and great famine” hitting Yemen that would be bigger than anything seen in the lifetime of any UN official. Kathy Kelly, co-coordinator of Voices for Creative Non-Violence, joins the show. Ecuador’s foreign minister said yesterday that the country would no longer intervene with the UK government on behalf of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange. Jose Valencia departed from previous policy by saying that it is now up to Assange to deal with his own problems with the UK. Randy Credico, an activist, a comedian, and the former director of the William Moses Kunstler Fund for Racial Justice, joins Brian and John. Apple Corporation CEO Tim Cook launched a blistering attack yesterday in Brussels against what he called the data industrial complex. Cook said that the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation could provide an alternative model. Professor Bryan Ford, who leads the Decentralized/Distributed Systems lab at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL), joins the show.Last week, there was an attack in southern Afghanistan against the governor, police chief, and intelligence director of Kandahar Province. They were all killed when the governor’s own bodyguards opened fire. The attack was claimed by the Taliban. But now we’re learning that the primary target was US Army General Scott Miller, the four-star officer in charge of all forces in Afghanistan. And US Army Brigadier General Jeff Smiley was shot and wounded in the attack.
