Harvey and Jim reflect a little on the last year but primarily look at the importance of VFP radio/podcasts along with other independent news sources as our national media fail to provide us the information that we need to take on the powers and the problems that are engulfing the world. We look at media failures from covering up the Christmas Truce, to a Palestinian lawsuit, Admiral Buchanan talking about winning a nuclear war, and the most listened-to news outlet worldwide letting us down by covering for genocide. Then we turn to the VFP power structure to provide us with some hope and direction. VFP President Susan Schnall, Vice President Josh Shurley, and Program Coordinator Mike Ferner provide us with information and tools on how we need to approach this coming year as a member of VFP but also as an organization that is looking to collaborate with other peace organizations to raise our voices and efforts to make a difference.

We have two great guests. First Dennis Speed talks about the work of the International Peace Coalition, especially concerning the thought of peace through economic cooperation. Then friend of the show and VFP member Anthony Donovan reflects on his recent visit to Vietnam and how that war 55 years ago emphasizes a connection with today's wars in Ukraine and especially Gaza. Once again the US can not help itself but be culpable.

Every year Veterans for Peace organizes a contingent to march in Albany's Veterans Day Parade (formerly Armistice Day) to highlight the need for Peace. Mark Dunlea for Hudson Mohawk Magazine interviewed a number of the marchers about their feelings about peace in this year's parade. Every year Veterans for Peace march in the Albany parade on Veterans' Day. This year VFP is supporting a cease fire in Gaza. Veterans for Peace recently issued a national statement applauding the Israeli military reservists who are calling for a ceasefire and the release of hostages, and who say they will not participate in genocide. VFP has called for an end to the genocide in Gaza, for a permanent ceasefire, and for an end to US arms shipments to Israel. Terry Lodge, Legal Counsel for Veterans for Peace, and Mike Ferner, Executive Director for Veterans for Peace join us to discuss the immediate need to gather a panel to indict Secretary of State Blinken and the letter to the Department of Justice outlining his culpability. Veterans for Peace is taking this major stand based on recent revelations from Propublica that Blinken lied to Congress about continuing aid to Israel, but it goes much deeper. Blinken apparently was complicit in genocide from the start. We also hear from VFP member Craig Bardo who spoke to a rally in Nashville and called for Blinken's indictment.

The massacre on the USS Liberty demonstrates the long history of betrayal and murder of Americans by Israel. Thanks to independent journalist James Li and his interview with Phil Tourney a sailor who survived the Israeli attack, we share how Israel's disdain for American lives and US complicity in that disdain goes back decades beyond Rachel Corrie. We also talk about recent actions by VFP members during our week to focus on Gaza.

From climate, to militarism, to Gaza, to police brutality on campus, to the Freedom flotilla, we try to share just a little of the impact of the Convention. The Convention demonstrated just how hard VFP is working to make this world a better and more peaceful place and the results that can be achieved with dedication and commitment.

Dr. Henry Maar joins us to talk about his book Freeze, the Grassroots Movement to Halt the Arms Race and End the Cold War. Dr. Maar is considered the authority on how the Nuclear Freeze movement of the 1970s/80's began. He talks about those people and organizations that generated the Freeze Movement, their challenges, and successes. He also relates how this movement actually made politicians listen and act. Can we do it again, must we do it again to avoid today's threats of nuclear war? This is so important as we approach the VFP convention and plan our month of action for September. Jack Gilroy faces jail time for trying to share Terry Lodge's VFP letter that outlines US culpability in genocide by supporting Israel. Terry Lodge drafted a letter which was signed by Susan Schnall, President and Mike Ferner, Executive Director of Veterans for Peace. The letter, addressed to the State Department, outlines the 5 laws and one Executive Order that the administration is in violation of by supporting Israel's genocide in Gaza. Of course, this criminality includes the weapon's industry so Jack Gilroy wanted to share the letter with BAE Systems in Endicott, NY where he was arrested and faces charges of trespass, so he was trespassing while trying to help BAE avoid criminal behavior. Every year Veterans for Peace march in the Memorial Day Parade in Albany. Memorial Day originally honored those lost while fighting in the Civil War, though this was changed to all wars after WWII. Dan Wilcox, an Albany poet and peace activist, discusses why VFP feel the message for Memorial Day is one of peace and ending all war. With Mark Dunlea for Hudson Mohawk Magazine.

Veterans for Peace specifically documents the national and international laws that the US is violating in its facilitation of Israel's genocide in Gaza. You will not hear this story anywhere else but here. The Second Meeting of States Parties of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons just finished and VFP Member Anthony Donovan was there. He joins us to give his reflection on the meeting and his perspective on the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. While the news is dominated by Israeli genocide in Gaza, the world does not stop and the efforts of so many countries to eliminate the threat of nuclear war continues. That is why the activism of Anthony, VFP and so many other groups needs to be recognized.

Krishna Madan educator, activist, and member of VFP joins Harvey and Jim to discuss a number of issues but primarily it is the Middle East. Krishna points out the history of Israel that Americans have been denied showing that the US public has been manipulated for more than 70 years to generate our un-questioning support for Israel. Dave Logsdon joins the show to talk about the Veterans for Peace project to reclaim Armistice Day a day to celebrate and work for peace. November 11 used to be Armistice Day but that was changed in 1954 when it became Veterans Day and since then it has been a holiday to celebrate war and militarism. VFP is trying to bring back that sentiment of peace to the United States before it devolves further into an outlier and bully within the world community. Dave Logsdon is the facilitator and coordinator of the project and joins us to share the importance of doing just that.

Today we are going to try to talk about and be relevant about the very fluid and disastrous situation in Gaza. We are going to share the VFP statement, hear from Caitlin Johnstone, Al Jazeera, Krystal, and Saagar from Breaking Point with a dire warning, and try to give our take on our own United States inability to help this by negating UN calls for a cease-fire, sending two carrier groups to the region as a so-called deterrent and sending billions of arms to a well-armed country which apparently is conducting war crimes and genocide. We finish up with a song about a human rights hero: Rachel Corrie.

After a quick recognition of Labor Day and the UAW efforts to help the big three automakers support their workers, we return to our coverage of the VFP convention. We talk nukes in Europe, democracy in the US (or lack thereof), where VFP has been to help us be inspired on where we are going and then Kathy Kelly gives us inspiration and remembers Daniel Ellsberg. He  has reported  extensively  on  great  power  competition, geostrategic messaging & propaganda,  media structure & ecology and  its  effects  on  communities.  He  has also collaborated  with various  scholars  on the geopolitics   of   global   health,  Indigenous health rights policy, structural violence, and medical care delivery under neoliberal capitalism. During the Veterans for Peace conference, there was an in-depth discussion on the quality of the Veterans Health Service, the efforts of corporations and government to privatize the VHS, and what you can do to stop that privatization. The participants were Suzanne Gordon, author, and activist, Donald Cohen, from In the Public Interest, and Bruce Carruthers, representing the VFP project to Save our VA (SOVA) and of course friend of the show.

Helen Jaccard the Golden Rule Project Coordinator and Gerry Condon the former President of VFP and current coordinator of the No Nukes working group join us as the Golden Rule is launched into the Mississippi. They will discuss the effort that it has taken to get the GR from California to Minnesota by truck. They will share the message that Veterans for Peace sailboat the Golden Rule is bringing on this Great Loop journey. They will share and promote the message of nuclear disarmament, anti-imperialism and PEACE, as the Golden Rule sails down the Mississippi, into the Gulf of Mexico, around Florida, up the East Coast and then through waterways, in the North East.
