The Leadership Playbook: Creating a Coaching Culture to Build Winning Business TeamsThere are enormous differences between managing and coaching. Yet many companies and organizations encourage their leaders to coach teams without ever teaching them how and without creating a culture that supports coaching.Nathan Jamail—a leading consultant, professional speaker, and the president of his own group of businesses—trains coaches at several Fortune 500 companies and learned that it takes not only different skills to achieve success, but a truly effective coach needs an organizational culture that creates and multiplies the success of every motivated team member. The Leadership Playbook shows leaders the skills necessary to be an effective coach and to build effective teams by: Fostering employees' belief in the culture of a companyResolving issues proactively rather than reactively and creating an involvement that constantly pushes employees to be their bestFocusing on the more humane principles of leadership—gratitude, positivity, and recognition—that keep morale highHolding teams and individuals accountableConstantly recruiting talent ("building the bench") rather than filling positions only when they are emptyCombining research, interviews, and inspiring stories with the lessons that have earned Jamail the respect of the world's foremost corporations including CISCO, FedEx, Sprint, the U.S. Army, and State Farm; The Leadership Playbook will dominate the category for years to come.Want to be a guest on Book 101 Review? The very first time I saw WICKED was when the national tour came to Cleveland in February 2008. The actress playing Glinda at the time was Katie Rose Clarke. As fate would have it, I was recently offered the chance to speak with her and Steven Jamail about their brand new song connected to their upbringing in Houston, Texas titled 'Margarita Christmas.' So naturally, I said yes. Katie Rose Clarke made her Broadway debut almost 20 years ago when she took over for Kelli O'Hara as Clara Johnson in THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA, where she even got to be a part of the PBS broadcast. Her subsequent credits include Hannah Campbell in ALLEGIANCE with George Takei and Lea Salonga, Ellen in the 2017 revival of MISS SAIGON, and most recently as Beth in the Tony-winning revival of MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG starring Jonathan Groff, Daniel Radcliffe, and Lindsay Mendez. Not to mention that she also happens to be Broadway's longest-running Glinda in WICKED. Steven Jamail is a composer, producer, musical director who has done arrangements and orchestrations that have been performed on Oprah, Howard Stern, Rachel Ray, The Rosie O'Donnell Show, Martha Stewart, The NBC Tree Lighting at Rockefeller Center, and the American Songbook series at Lincoln Center. He has also created arrangements and played for Bebe Winans, Rosie O'Donnell, Jessie Mueller, Jeremy Abbott, and Adam Rippon. He serves as the regular music director for Orfeh, Teal Wicks, Danielle Hope, and Lea Michele, having just recently orchestrated and conducted Ms. Michele's lauded Carnegie Hall debut and Life in Music Tour. He is the Associate Artistic Director of O'Donnell's foundation, Rosie's Theater Kids in NYC. *I do not own any of the content used in this video. Jamail Deal (Coach Deal) is discussing the topic of Approaching God with Care. He uses Solomons experiences with disappointment  as he tried to find peace apart from God. In the book of Ecclesiastes Solomon finds understanding that there is no peace finding peace apart from God.  Fear God and obey his commands for this is everyone's duty. Through the words of Solomon, Jamail wants others to approach God with care. Approaching God with care requires you to first have the wisdom to know that he is your Lord and Savior. Secondly, pleasing God makes you wealthy, not money or valuables. Third, be popular with God by never being apart from him. Constantly pray, fast and worship him. Fourth, acknowledge his creation of you, he knows you by name.

The drive for attention is central to the quest for success as colleges and universities compete for students, faculty, and funding. The branding/marketing mania is reaching into the faculty, too. Many colleagues feel increasing pressure to generate attention and visibility for their work, and they find that intellectual humility has become a hindrance. Academic work has always been based on balancing individual and community interests, and the need for attention is fostering hype, overselling, and the need to publish "sellable" research output. Today's discussion will focus on how a drive for attention is reshaping the purpose of higher education, including academic practice, how contemporary forces are undermining public trust in higher education and science, and what can be done to restore intellectual humility and community balance, both of which are central to the pursuit of knowledge. ADRIAN LENARDIC teaches modeling & design, skateboard videography, visualizing nature, and planetary science at Rice University. He was born in Zagreb, Croatia (he rarely misses a Croatian soccer match). His undergraduate degree is from UW-Madison, where he started as an art major before switching to physics (he still co-teaches a class in the art department). His Ph.D. is from UCLA, where he was introduced to planetary science (as well as learning to surf). Before coming to Rice, he was a president's postdoctoral fellow at UC Berkeley (the snowboard days). Adrian's scientific research relates to understanding interactions between the Earth's interior and surface environment, model development and uncertainty assessment, and multiple tangent meanderings. He is part of a first prize-winning art-car team and the recipient of the mayor's award, from the Jamail skate park, for the most improved skateboarder over 30. Today's forum, sponsored by FutureU at https://futureu.education/, is hosted by Ruben O. Martinez, and the audio was produced by Frank Fear on behalf of FutureU.

The End of Ice: Bearing Witness and Finding Meaning in the Path of Climate Destruction (The New Press, Jan 2019) After nearly a decade overseas as a war reporter, the acclaimed journalist Dahr Jamail returned to America to renew his passion for mountaineering, only to find that the slopes he had once climbed have been irrevocably changed by climate disruption. In response, Jamail embarks on a journey to the geographical front lines of this crisis―from Alaska to Australia's Great Barrier Reef, via the Amazon rainforest―in order to discover the consequences to nature and to humans of the loss of ice. In The End of Ice, we follow Jamail as he scales Denali, the highest peak in North America, dives in the warm crystal waters of the Pacific only to find ghostly coral reefs, and explores the tundra of St. Paul Island where he meets the last subsistence seal hunters of the Bering Sea and witnesses its melting glaciers. Accompanied by climate scientists and people whose families have fished, farmed, and lived in the areas he visits for centuries, Jamail begins to accept the fact that Earth, most likely, is in a hospice situation. ___________________ Van Carter is a retired broadcast journalist. An interview with Dahr Jamail the author of The Will to Resist: Soldiers Who Refuse to Fight in Iraq and Afghanistan. The U.S. project in Iraq has been condemned by a vibrant and vocal antiwar movement as illegal and unjust since before the invasion began. Since 2006, a majority in the United States have opposed the contination of the occupation, and reported to pollsters that they believe the invasion was a mistake. But how do the soldiers who carry out the occupation see the war? Fragmented reports of battalions refusing orders, of active duty soldiers signing antiwar petitions, of individual soldiers refusing redeployment and taking a public stand against the occupation have trickled into the mainstream reportage over hte last five years. But how deep does the current of resistance run? What makes soldiers deployed in Iraq decide to go AWOL, file for conscientious objector status, or even serve sentences in military prisons to avoid taking part in this unpopular engagement? Dahr Jamail's comprehensive study of the today's military resisters sheds new light on the contours of dissent within the ranks of world's most powerful military, documenting the fight for justice inside the belly of the beast. Dahr Jamail is an independent journalist who has covered the Middle East for more than five years. He is the author of Beyond the Green Zone. Jamail writes for the Inter Press Service and many other outlets.

With wars waged abroad purportedly for "spreading democracy", it's time to face some uncomfortable truths. People are awake and aware that the U.S. and the West doesn't give a fig about democracy. They care about puppets -- people in state power who are answerable to them -- and fear democracy more than terrorism. From Karzai in Afghanistan, Siniora in Lebanon, al Maliki in Iraq, and beyond, people are rising up against these shills for Western, corporate interests. Protests from Kabul to Pakistan are raging against America's alleged allies, who rule by brutality, barbarity and torture. There are several reasons for this state of affairs, but perhaps it all bubbles down to two: Abu Ghraib, and the Iraq invasion/occupation. American performance on the ground, their treatment of Iraqis, the chaos that has seized the country like a fever, had fueled protests far beyond the borders of Iraq, blowing around the world like the borderless wind. The war in Iraq, and all of its consequences, has caused the U.S. to be one of the most-feared and most-hated nations on earth. Beyond the rhetoric of democracy lies the gloved hand of international business; or, in a more commonly-used term -- globalization. Globalization is far more than the newest expression of an old economic theory (capitalism); it is the force that requires the installation of puppets throughout the Middle East. One of the many, many protesters against the Siniora regime in Lebanon, in explaining her opposition to the government, voiced a concern not usually translated for American audiences: We are peacefully contesting the government to show that people without a voice are actually the majority... It is only the rich people who have a voice in this current government, while the middle and lower classes are not listened to. There is a class mentality in this government. [Fr.: Jamail, Dahr, "Lebanon: this protest won't go away," Asheville Global Report (May 3 - May 9, 2007), p.12]. The reason for this infiltration? Oil Do you really think that Americans suddenly care about Arab suffering? One glance at the pain of Palestinians will answer that question. Indeed, life under any of America's allies in the region ain't no cup of tea; in Eygpt, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, or in Iraq, democratic activists have faced the brutality of their regime's police in the streets, and the sneer of their torturers in the dungeons beneath the streets. America's response is little more than stony silence, broken intermittently by the cold academic listing in the State Dept. report. The message couldn't be clearer: "We'll talk about democracy, but that's it!" The U.S. didn't march to Iraq to bring democracy, to spread freedom, or anything even remotely like it. It didn't go there to stop the oppression of Iraqis. It didn't go there because Saddam Hussein was a "bad guy." It went there to make that access to the most precious commodity left on earth, oil, was there. And, it figured, as a Superpower, it was its imperial due. Every nation in the world knows this. Billions of people around the globe know this. The tragedy is that there are still a few Americans who claim to believe in this madness. If there really waas democracy, America's closest allies would be out of a job (at the very least, or hanging from the spires of their professional palace. If there really was democracy either in the U.S. (or Britain), the most unpopular governments in generations wouldn't still be in power. From Death Row, this is Mumia Abu–Jamal

Steppin' Out of Babylon: Radio Interviews

Dahr Jamail is one of the few "unembedded", truly independent journalists on the ground in Iraq. He has spent 8 of the past 14 months in Iraq, interviewing Iraqi people, taking and collecting photos of others and seeing for himself the devastation of the people of Iraq. He cites that over 100,000 Iraqis have been killed. He especially talks about the horrors and massacre of Fallujah which he refers to as similar to Dresden, Germany or the Mai Lai massacre in Vietnam. He also describes the illegal weapons used and the DU ("depleted uranium) which really means radiation exposure from which there are already 125,000 Gulf War I veterans on disability not to mention the horrible effects on the people of Iraq. Now the US is actually using twice as much DU as it did in Gulf War I.Jamail also talks about the evidence for the elections in Iraq having been manipulated by the US and, even though the Iraqi people who voted (and whole cities did not) voted for, as Jamail says, "electricy, jobs, water"-- ie, against the continuance of the US Occupation-- it probably won't matter since the Iraqi Governing Council won't be able to do anything without the ok of the US. The Iraqi resistance is growing exponentially while the US already has 4 military bases in Iraq with 10 more in the process of being built. All this is paid for the tax money of the US population.Right now the future doesn't look bright though Dahr Jamail will probably return to Iraq in May.Check out his blog/website to keep up on what's happening in Iraq.

Dahr Jamail is an American independent writer for newstandardnews.net and can often be heard reporting from Iraq on Flashpoints on KPFA Radio. He has been on several trips to Iraq where he has spent months at a time. In fact, he just came from Iraq a couple of days before this interview in California. He speaks very movingly about life on a daily level in Iraq, with bombs going off all day and night. He speaks about the Iraqi people, himself, the US military-- all living in this unbelievably stressful environment where an Iraqi and/or those close to he/she, could be arrested and imprisoned and anyone can be killed at any time-- the pain of war and occupation-- both for the occupied and the occupiers, but especially the invaded and occupied Iraqis who, although they were mostly very hospitable to Jamail, were developing more and more hatred for American occupiers.
