Soon after completing her graduate studies in psychology, Dr. Sharon Prentice found the world of secular psychology lacking-her patients needed “something more”. So, she set out to investigate and explore alternative methods in the field of mental health that would incorporate that “something special” she believed existed in each and every individual soul. Her journey would take her through the great religions of the world as well as to a discovery of ancient, time-proven alternatives to modern therapeutic models of counseling. She is the author of the bestselling book “Becoming Starlight: A Shared Death Journey from Darkness to Light” which attempts to answer the question “Is this all there is?” She now primarily works with terminally ill patients and their families to help them transition with more love, truth, and surrender. Today, I’m going to go into a SUPER important topic, and one that often gets overlooked in the change process, the MISSING LINK when we are trying to create change. Once you can truly understand the importance of this step, suddenly so much more becomes possible in what we are creating but we are creating from a NEW level of awareness. So, please, remember this step next time you are in a place of contraction and shame and trying to force yourself to take action. I promise it will be a game-changer. I dive into: ● Why pain, shame & contraction can be powerful catalysts to create change in our lives. ● The step we MUST take in between our pain and shame and actual action that allows us to create much more intentionally and powerfully. ● Why awareness is the greatest agent for change. ● Why it is SO important to take as much responsibility for our circumstances as possible. ● How self-responsibility is different than self-judgment. ● Why humans default to blaming external circumstances or defaulting to stories about themselves. ● The three step process necessary to understand the full scope of the “problem” we are seeing in front of us. In this episode, I’m going to be pretty bold and declare something that might sound strange. Your emotional eating (or replace with any other numbing agent) is actually a gift in some strange wrapping paper, and may actually be a catalyst for a deeper transformation that creates more abundance and possibility in your life. Today, I’m exploring a topic that often comes up in my coaching programs. As they start to put down the baggage that has held them back and start to accelerate the momentum in their life, there comes a point when they start to ponder what could have been (had they made more empowered choices in their past). They may even start to fear that they will never fulfill their ultimate potential because they spent so much time seemingly idle; there’s no way to catch up. There are actually really important reasons we need to grieve and let go of “what could have been” so we can create powerfully in the present. I know I have had to grieve what I call “my ghost ship.” So, today, we are going to talk about: ● The common self-sabotaging “coulda woulda shoulda” that come up as someone actually starts to feel new levels of empowerment in their lives. ● Why “regret” is actually a POWERFUL teacher in our lives if we explore it intentionally and from a place of self-compassion. ● How our past can be a tool used to destroy or a tool used to build our futures. ● The questions to ask yourself when you are pondering “what could have been” to intentionally build your future. Brianna Mercado is a professional dance artist, teacher, choreographer, and speaker based in New York City, and has inspired many with her grit and positivity in the face of incredible adversity. From surviving life-threatening bone cancer at the age of 15, to receiving a full-ride scholarship to UC Berkeley, igniting her career as a professional dancer, and then receiving a second aggressive cancer diagnosis at the age of 22 —Brianna lives by her own credo as she lifts the spirit of the world: Go big, regardless. As an advocate and spokesperson for cancer research and prevention, she believes there must be a better and less toxic way to treat and cure cancer. She is currently on a mission called “Project Get To Zero,” where her goal is to completely cure her cancer without the use of conventional therapies. Brianna embodies her belief that inside every impossible situation there is an opportunity to be great and no real reason to wait. If there is more to learn, someone to love, something to give, and things to do, then do them, now. ● What it was like to receive, not ONE but TWO separate cancer diagnoses before the age of 22, and how she coped receiving the “C” word. ● How she approached treatment radically differently from the first diagnosis to the second. ● What it was like to come face to face with your worst fear and handle it with grace. ● How dancing saved Brianna by helping her self-express and move through her fear and grief, and was a powerful catalyst for her artistic growth. ● The powerful promise and declaration Brianna made in the face of her second cancer diagnosis. ● How taking full responsibility for her life (including her cancer), regardless of what happens, set Brianna free. ● How radically shifting her diet & becoming a Buddhist brought helped to decrease the presence of cancer in her body. ● Why Brianna now chooses alignment over hustle now and no longer tries to force things to happen or control life. ● Why Brianna has shifted her language around dominating her cancer, and why wars don’t fix anything, even inside our own body, and why she no longer calls herself a “survivor”. Why Mark is Fiercely Human: You may remember Mark as CBS journalist and popular news personality. He was a mainstay on the CBS network; from 48 hours to CBS this morning. I grew up watching Mark on TV and can totally relate to the rest of the country when he was named one of the “Ten Most Trusted News Personalities.” He has interviewed five presidents, Steven Spielberg, major movie stars like Sidney Poitier and Julia Roberts, cultural icons like Muhammad Ali and musicians like Stevie Wonder and Garth Brooks and has covered the Oscars, to the Olympics to the Grammys and more. Mark has had quite the career and was a constant presence in my home growing up. I met Mark at TedX Broadway a few years back when we were both speakers, and it wasn’t until then that I learned more about Mark’s story. In 2005, Mark suffered a massive stroke which almost ended his life and shifted the trajectory of his career, relationships, and perspective on life. He wrote a book, “After the Stroke” chronicling the near-deadly experience and his long road to recovery. Now, Mark tours the country speaking on his personal journey and serving as an inspiration for stroke victims while spreading awareness of the warning signs of stroke. Here is what we cover in the episode: ● Mark’s unexpected and synchronistic journey from comic, to a weatherman, to prominent national news personality. ● His experience having a massive stroke 30,000 feet in the air and the angel who saved his life before walking back into baggage claim. ● The mantras Mark held tight to when faced with incredible adversity. ● How Mark turned his pain into his purpose. In this episode will turn the “goals” conversations on its head, and she drops truth bombs about the true purpose of goals and what they are really about in our personal evolution. In this solo-session, she will jam on: ● How life is not designed to validate us but to grow us, and why that’s a good thing. ● The crucial importance of starting before we feel ready. ● The TRUE purpose of goals (hint hint...it’s not about the results you get). ● How attaching to the outcome of our goals actually stifles our ability to take action, the joy found in our current relationship with life and “living light.” ● How the pursuit of “looking good” or “like a pro” within our pursuits creates self-produced obstacles. ● How perfection keeps us swimming in cycles of procrastination. ● Why intangible benefits are often more important than the tangible results in a journey. ● Why lessons live in the “gray”, not black and white. ● Ending up in circumstances that we don’t want leads us to understand what we DO want more clearly. ● Why failure resilience is the most important indicator of our success. ● How focusing as much on our internal lives as our external lives elevate our life experience. ● Why our legacy on this earth is a product of who we are BECOMING through the pursuit of our goals. ● Why focusing on who we want to BE is as important as what we want to DO and HAVE. ● How to EMBODY who you want to BE on the other side of our goals. Episode #4: Worthy Stokes. She Survived Death. Here is What She Learned About Living. Why Worthy is Fiercely Human: Worthy is a near-death experience and polytraumatic brain injury, a survivor. After years of her own spiritual awakening and deepening her understanding of neuroscience and as a devout Buddhist, Worthy was hit by a 15-person passenger van while traveling in Seoul, South Korea and spent 120 minutes outside of her body, going into her near-death experience as a Buddhist and coming out with “no religion.” She shares what she experienced on the other side and why she chose to come back to her body. Worthy has beautifully simple yet profound messages about how to live life powerfully now as a human and from a place of curiosity and what moves us. She is also a gifted meditation teacher with an ability to uplift individuals at the deepest levels of neurological intelligence. Her Heartmind intelligence meditations exude breath-taking awareness in a fresh, secular approach to ancient spiritual truths. Her compassionate insights reflect years of mystical study worldwide. Oh, and don’t put her in a spiritual guru box, because she wants none of that. She is also pragmatic, sexy, super intelligent, funny and bad-ass. This conversation was SO illuminating and fun. I will carry it with me for a long time to come and hope you do too! In this episode, we deep dive into: ● Worthy’s five-year journey of spiritual awakening and mystical studies, including studying neuroscience and become a devout Buddhist practitioner (living with monks and learning from Tenzin Rinpoche (Tibetan Dzogchen) preceding her near-death experience and how it prepared her for it. ● What she experienced in the 120 minutes outside of her body and how that has impacted how she lives now. ● Her experience coming back from death to a broken body and injured brain that resulted in the loss of 2.5 senses. ● What she came to understand when she was unconscious and hemorrhaging (but was actually superconscious). ● The importance of coming to know and understand ourselves before we ask anyone else to understand us. ● The gifts in being able to hold anguish and beauty in our experiences at the same time. ● The liberation in rejecting labels and choosing when to put them only when it works for us at that moment. ● The difficulties of coming back to a world that had no context of the awareness she acquired. ● How her near-death experience affected how she lives every day and why her 95-year-old self is the spirit guide driving her Maserati these days. ● What heart-mind meditation is and how Worthy serves the world these days.
