What lessons have parents learned during distance learning and working from home? How can they create a better post-pandemic new norm? Maria invited back her friend and positive psychologist, Robert Zeitlin, to share his experience guiding and supporting parents and families to get back on track amidst the pandemic. Robert is the author of the books “Laugh More, Yell Less: A Guide to Raising Kick-Ass Kids” and “But I’m Not a Teacher! A Parent’s Guide to Learning Under Lockdown”.  He has been helping parents to turn the challenges created during distance learning and working from home into learning opportunities for the whole family. In this episode, Robert and Maria dive into the learning superpowers from positive psychology that can help parents identify their children’s character’s strengths to prepare them for better livelihoods. They also discuss the tension created between parents and teachers during distance learning and provide guidance and insights to help them rebuild trust and create a better new norm at home and in the classroom. Using their shared experience in the mastermind group they co-created, they explore learning in relationships and unpack the role of time and space, infinite and finite games, and so much more in learning. This is a special episode between two friends and lifelong learners. Episode 20. Shy & Fearful Dogs: Brittany’s Story with Maria Montgomery, Trainer. After hearing the Shy & Fearful Dog Roundtable (Episode 17), Brittany Roger reached out to me with her own story. While Brittany was a lifelong animal lover, it wasn’t until she & her husband adopted Sam, an elderly obese chihuahua, that they learned exactly how much they didn’t know about dog behavior . . . after a trip to the emergency room.A few years later, after starting her new job at the Maryland SPCA as a Digital Specialist, Brittany fell in love with another chihuahua, Carmelo, who she hoped would have all the good traits of her first dog, with none of the more challenging traits. Carmelo, however, had different plans in mind. When the COVID-19 quarantine hit last year, Maryland SPCA’s Lead Trainer & Behaviorist, Maria Montgomery, was working to move the shelter’s training classes online and with Brittany’s help, was able to do just that.  Brittany meanwhile was tasked with editing hours of dog training videos and was learning by osmosis exactly what she needed to help Carmelo become comfortable in his new family at his own pace. Brittany, Maria & I discuss:Brittany’s childhood critters; How Maria, a reluctant puppy owner, accidentally fell into dog training and how it changed her life; How Sam & Carmelo joined Brittany’s family and the challenges that each dog brought;Learning how to “handle” a dog that’s sensitive to being touched;Dealing with the “fantasy” of what we want our dogs to be versus accepting the reality of who our dogs truly are and what they need from us;How Brittany started learning how to help Carmelo during COVID-19 through the Maryland SPCA’s online training videos and consultations; How sometimes our dog’s challenges mirror the same challenges we experience as people – and learning to have compassion for our dogs and ourselves; Why your dog’s growling is a good thing!;Knowing when and how to push your dog – the right way to challenge your dog to expand their comfort zone through creating games and finding your dog’s joy;The importance of training dogs – especially fearful dogs – in short bursts and how to include new skills into your lifestyle; Why we should spend more time watching our dogs; How the Maryland SPCA was able to pivot their dog training classes online during COVID-19;The benefits of online training classes for shy and fearful dogs;Tips for finding the right dog trainer for you and your dog; andHow you’re training your dog whether you know it or not. Links Discussed:Maryland SPCA:https://www.mdspca.org/Maryland SPCA’s Online Training Classes – For any dog owner:https://www.mdspca.org/education/training/Episode 1, Erin’s Story as a Reluctant Dog Ownerhttps://believeindog.podbean.com/e/erins-story-i-love-lucy/ Let's Connect:Facebook: @believeindogpodcastInstagram: @believe_in_dog_podcastEmail: erin@believeindogpodcast.comSupport this podcast, subscribe on your favorite app and leave a rating or review.

So we have said goodbye to 2020 and all of the insanity that came with it, but there is something we haven’t said goodbye to: working from home. Many companies have pledged to work from home well into 2021, leaving us sitting in  our sweatpants, computer monitors and weird makeshift home offices with reluctant acceptance. People are spending more time than EVER indoors and at their screens, and that’s why it’s never been MORE important to have plants not only in our homes, but in our work from home office set ups. Since WFH isn't going anywhere, in 2021, I'm choosing to reframe it from a frustration to an opportunity. An opportunity to have complete control over our WFH environment and create our desk space oasis to look exactly like we want it. Today’s episode is all about the why and how behind bringing plants into our workspaces, whether you are still working from home or are back in your office. Cobbling together a work from home set up was STRESSFUL in 2020, in our old apartment  I had a desk that folded up into the wall, so I couldn’t even decorate and settle in the way I wanted. But now, as we turn the page to 2021, let’s shake things up create some stress free and  joyful moments in our lives! For me the solution here has been plants and something that blew me away recently is how many people in our community are going HAM on their workspaces with plants. I posted my planty wfh set up on IG in December, asking if anyone else created a jungle oasis at their desk the way I did in 2020, and SO many of you sent pictures of your amazing planty home office set ups, and asked for help and ideas for how to set up your own. So this episode is for you plant friends, inspired by you and members of our community, and I hope everyone walks away from this episode with one idea to incorporate a little more green into their daily workflow.  I’ve broken this episode into two sections: the WHY where we dive into the reasons why having plants are so important in our space and talk a little about biophilic design and then part two the HOW. I share ideas inspired from the WHY section, break down the ways I incorporated plants and biophilic design into my home office and then review some photos listeners sent in and hope their setups might inspire you as well.  Get the free download with 9 Tips for Greening Up Your Work From Home Office Space In the episode we learn: [02:07] Why Bloom and Grow Radio is doing an episode on #plantywfh spaces [04:39] Check out Maria’s Planty WFH space tour [05:03] What to expect from this episode on work from home setups and biophilic design [06:50] The AMAZING and unbelievable benefits of engaging with plants and biophilic design, according to 14 Patterns of Biophilic Design [07:27] What is biophilia, the idea behind it, and the important figures behind this wonderful hypothesis [09:24] The psychological role of plants in our creativity [10:09] How being around nature and scenery affects patient recovery, as studied by Dr. Ulrich in 1972 to 1981 [11:13] A review of direct versus involuntary attention based on studies by Stephen R. One of the major things that plants do is help connect us with nature. I think as plant parents, once we use plants to reconnect with ourselves and make our homes look beautiful, they also get us thinking more about nature and the earth and how important it’s preservation is. So today’s episode is exploring just that: plant parenthood and low waste living, and what it means to make intentional decisions about preserving our planet while taking care of ourselves and our plants. I think we are all anxiously looking at 2021 and getting excited about the changes that will come. This is the time to set new years resolutions and just think about how we want to show up in 2021 for ourselves and I think more importantly, there are global conversations happening about how we can show up for those around us and the environment.   As I continue to fall deeper in love with plants, I’m finding that I’m falling deeper in love with nature itself and feeling a stronger sense of responsibility to take care of our planet. I’m so excited to welcome Nick Cutsumpas of @farmernicknyc  to the podcast and share this conversation with you and to inform and encourage our community to think about how we can apply these concepts of low waste living to not only our lives, but to our hobby of plant care. Nicks been a plant friend of mine for a while and I’ve loved learning more about sustainability from him, and figured he is the perfect intersection of plant parent and environmental activist to have for this chat about how to lead more sustainable lives as humans and plant parents.  In this episode we learn: [00:02:26] Introducing Nick Cutsumpas and episode key ideas [00:07:18] What Nick does, what started his plant journey (mothers DO know best!), and how plants served as his ‘saving grace’ when he moved into the city [00:10:38] Check out Nick in Netflix’s new show The Big Flower Fight! [00:16:32] What Maria thinks of ‘zero waste’ and her reservations with the movement [00:17:17] Nick shares why he thinks plant blindness is similar to waste blindness [00:17:37] Why Nick strives for low waste consumption vs zero waste, how we as consumers can apply low waste consumption to the products we buy [00:19:45] Why the time to be more conscious is NOW more than ever and how taking care of plants reminds us that we can take action [00:20:47] Why Bloom and Grow Radio is doing an episode on low waste [00:21:45] Low Waste Beginner Tip #1: Reuse everything [00:22:46] Do you have tons of bubble wrap from your online orders? I had such a great discussion with Maria Quiban Whitesell and Lauren Schneider for this episode. Maria and Lauren have just written a book called “You Can't Do It Alone: A Widow's Journey Through Loss, Grief, and Life After.” The book is a memoir based on Maria's journey with her late husband's brain cancer – which is, of course, a subject near and dear to my heart. Lauren adds her professional perspective throughout the book in sections called “Grief Therapist's Notebook.” Some topics that Maria and Lauren and I discuss include: How Maria's husband acting oddly on a trip to Paris prompted him to see a doctor, which led to his diagnosis of inoperable, terminal brain cancer; How critical her family therapist during this whole journey, including helping Maria and Sean figure out how to talk with their son about his dad's cancer; Why it's so important to be honest with kids, no matter how difficult the situation is; The rule of thumb that if a child is old enough to ask a question, they are old enough to hear the answer; Tip: a grief support center can be a great resource for getting a referral to a therapist who is experienced in working with grieving families and grieving kids; What to do if your kids are upset that paramedics or the funeral home team remove their parent's body from the home while they are asleep or away; How to handle it if your child expresses a wish to be with their deceased parent; and How thankful Maria is for their very supportive family and friends. I hope you enjoy my discussion with Maria Quiban Whitesell and Lauren Schneider. -=-=-=-=- Thank you sponsors & partners: Audible - Get a FREE audiobook and 30-day free trial: www.audibletrial.com/widowedparent BetterHelp - Talk with a licensed, professional therapist online. Summary: On this episode of the This is a Man’s World, She Who Dares Wins podcast, our guest is Maria Coulter, also known as The Construction Coach. Maria grew up interested in woodworking, working at an organ factory at one time before going on to college where got into the field of quantity surveying. When she entered the industry in the late 1980’s, she was pleasantly surprised to not be the only woman on site, and she has found strength and encouragement from the comradery that she and her colleagues share. During the recession, when work was limited, Maria started to notice a decreasing morale in the construction industry, from the top levels all the way down. She realized that most leaders had been chosen for their technical abilities and had never received any leadership training to be able to know how to relate to their direct reports during these leaner times. Maria began “coaching” herself throughout this time and she realized that other construction industry leaders could also use her help in self-discovery, mindset, focusing on their people, and building confidence. She has now been in business for 5 years and she has begun receiving recognition for her contributions to diversity and inclusion in the construction industry, most recently the British Empire Medal. She is also a Board member of the Construction Industry Council and Chair of its Diversity and Inclusion panel. Maria launched the TRIBE (Together Representing and Influencing Built Environments) Network on Facebook as an online community for expanding mindsets and open conversations. Time Stamps: 0:42 – How Maria got into the construction industry. 3:18 – The benefit of having other women on site. 4:27 – Challenges Maria has faced. 7:23 – How Maria got to where she is now. 10:59 – The importance of telling the “real story” to change the industry. 16:25 – It’s all about people. 17:36 – Building confidence at work. 23:18 – Celebrating the little wins. 27:39 – Handling emotions in the workplace. 33:13 – Maria’s recent British Empire Medal. 36:19 – The TRIBE Network Maria has created. 41:50 – Maria’s membership in the Construction Industry Council Board. 43:39 – Advice to women about the construction industry. Key Quotes: “I definitely felt the need for the pressure on myself to be perfect.” “We’ve got to do better than this. This is not how you get the best out of people.” “As an industry, if we really want to get this culture change, we’ve got to be able to be ourselves.” “We don’t give ourselves enough acknowledgment for all the achievements we have done and how far we have come.” “If feel like what I’m doing is a mission.” “Young people a lot of the time don’t even know we exist.” “I feel like I’m getting a voice in the industry to make a difference.” Connect with Maria: https://constructioncoach.co.uk/ Connect with us: https://www.patreon.com/Thisisamansworld https://thisisamansworld.co.uk/ https://www.facebook.com/Thisisamansworlduk/ https://twitter.com/AMansWorldUK https://www.instagram.com/thisisamansworlduk/ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCADDdf-5TgSb3VZJ6XcSAWg?view_as=subscriber michelle@thisisamansworld.co.uk --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/shewhodareswins/message

My guest today is Maria Bartiromo, anchor and Global Markets Editor for FOX Business. Maria has been a journalist for 30 years, starting back in 1989 as a production assistant at CNN Business News. She has seen and reported on some of the world’s most major events which you will hear about in our discussion. Maria has an upcoming special debuting on September 22, 2019 tied to how Artificial Intelligence is changing the face of business and the workplace. Her research for this special included traveling across the country over the past year and interviewing the top tier CEOs leading the charge on this topic. In today’s conversation, you will hear some of her findings and what CEOs are saying about AI and technology. You will also hear Maria’s advice on how we should prepare for what’s to come, what assumptions she had at the beginning of the process that were proven wrong, what jobs will be most on-demand in the future, and how AI might impact leaders. Maria Bartiromo is a FOX Business Global Markets Editor and Anchor. She has been a journalist for 30 years and has worked for CNN, CNBC, and FOX. She has received two Emmys and a Gracie Award and in 2009 the Financial Times named her one of the “50 Faces That Shaped The Decade”. Maria was the first journalist to report live from the floor of the New York Stock Exchange on a daily basis and she was the first female journalist to be inducted into the Cable Hall of Fame Class of 2011. She has written three books, The Weekend That Changed Wall Street, The 10 Laws of Enduring Success, and Use The News: How to Separate the Noise from the Investment Nuggets and Make Money in Any Economy. She has a one-hour special coming up on September 22, 2019, called Artificial Intelligence: The Revolution Happening to Our Work and Our Lives, which will air on FOX News. The report is based on research Maria has been conducting for over a year on how Artificial Intelligence is changing the face of business and the workplace. She has traveled around and interviewed the leading technologists of the world, people like Marty Schmidt, Provost at MIT, Peter Thiel, founder of Palantir and co-founder of PayPal, Ginni Rometty, Chairman and CEO of IBM and Jim Hackett, Chairman and CEO of Ford Motors. After all of her in-depth research, what does Maria think will happen to jobs in the next 5-10 years? “I mean this is today in 2019, we have more job openings than we have people. I mean, the labor force is so tight right now with a 51-year low in unemployment, and jobs are plentiful. I think that will only get worse, whereas there won't be enough people for the jobs that we need, and the jobs that we have will be able to be filled by computers. I think longer term, you are going to see a massive displacement in work and in jobs. I think the most important thing that people have to do is first of all recognize that machines are getting smarter and smarter, and they will take your job. You need to make sure to arm yourself with the right information and education, where you are savvy with technology, because if you're not savvy with technology in the next 10 years, you will be left out.” There’s no doubt that AI is becoming smarter and smarter and implementing it into business can save money and time. It can also allow humans to get involved in more creative roles and it will free us up to do the things we actually want to do. So what can we do as individuals to prepare for the future of AI and technology? Maria says first and foremost we have to enjoy every moment of everyday because life is short and it is precious. Secondly she says that education is key. Things are changing in a rapid pace and it’s not going to slow down. We need to be perpetual learners, constantly growing, innovating, dreaming, creating, and learning so that we can keep up in this upcoming world of work. What you will learn: How Maria conducted research for her upcoming piece on Artificial Intelligence A look at the assumptions she had in her mind before she started working on this report and how they changed in the process What Maria thinks will happen to jobs in the next 5-10 years How AI and technology will specifically impact leaders Who is responsible for upskilling? Organizations or individuals? What jobs will be in demand in the future Why some CEOs are worried about AI and some are optimistic Advice for what individuals should do to prepare for the future of work

So if you have been listening to the podcast, you’ll know that I met Alessia  online when I was fawning over her pilea peperomiodies and the rest is history. What was initially an online friendship through DMs (mostly of her helping me with my beginning stages of my plant collection) has blossomed into a really beautiful IRL friendship. Alessia is a really important part of this plant community, because this girl has one of the most generous hearts I know out there. Even though her account has grown and grown, I know she takes time to talk to whoever needs help, and she also supports so many people in the plant space. In This Week's Episode:  Maria Konnikova is a contributing writer to The New Yorker, and author of the best selling books The Confidence Game and Mastermind: How to Think Like Sherlock Holmes. Maria gained notoriety in the poker community when she won the 2018 PCA National Championship for $84,000, plus a $30,000 PSPC Platinum Pass. What makes Maria's story so fascinating is that a year before her victory, she had no clue how to play poker, and admittedly didn't even know how many cards were in the deck. Maria's books focus on psychology, and it's application in the real world. She chose poker as the subject of her next book, The Biggest Bluff, to try to understand the nature of luck vs. skill and figure out if we can learn how to tell the difference. To research the book she chose to fully immerse herself in the game and attempt to make it on the live tournament circuit. With the help of Erik Seidel, her story has been one of outstanding success, and she's going to continue with the journey at least until next year when she'll play the $25,000 PSPC at the 2010 PokerStars PCA. In This Episode You'll Learn: 10:52 - How Maria landed Erik Seidel as a coach before she ever read a poker book (and why she targeted him as her ideal coach). 26:36 - The high leverage skill that Maria learned through poker which she now applies to her most important decisions. 28:11 - The 3 reasons why Maria achieved rapid success even though Erik Seidel labeled her as "not naturally suited to poker." Maria Hunt, in her early twenties always had that entrepreneurial spirit and wanted to do something to help people. That's just been her nature as she’s loved working for people. She had been a horrible student in her student days barely graduating, but once she started working with these huge technology companies that's where it sparked her interests in learning. She learnt everything there is to learn about business and entrepreneurship from her once upon a time, co-workers and bosses. “When you're working in a company, you have the social aspect, you're working with people but when you're a non-working mother, it's more isolating and lonely when you're just home with your kids.” Maria worked for MySpace and other Tech startups that inspired in her, the social aspects. MySpace connected people, which is especially what mothers, ultimately need. It was when Maria found these other mom groups, only to find there was mom shaming, being mean, or judgmental at one another. She thought, she's getting older, and there is no time to do all of that, so she wanted to create this community of women who inspire, who look out for each other, who support, who loved to laugh, who love to have a good time and do not judge each other because, all women are going through all of it together. It is then she created this community Unicornmoms, now almost 70,000 members where moms can have real discussions, a fun time AND even a dirty mind without any judgments or cattiness. In this episode you will learn: Where did it all start, what was the early on vision and what was the process that took Maria from where she was to, where she is today How Maria was able to sustain and contain the equally challenging entrepreneurial vision she had when she started The differences of working as a high-level executive at a technology company, and being a mom The inspiration to create Unicornmoms What role do the parents play on the upbringing of kids What role does the father figure play in raising effective children Is the stay-at-home parenting the most effective way to raise a loving child? What would it need of women to own their own power and to step into it and realize they are limitless, with no boundaries What did her kids teach Maria about herself and what did she learn through being a parent Is there a question for a Mom or Dad to ask themselves daily to remind themselves of the way to be the best parent for their kids How can a Man /Husband be a best parent in their family How can moms who’ve lost their identities, re-establish their identities and find themselves again so they can find more meaning and fulfillment and live a more empowering lifestyle The App that Maria Hunt created for Unicornmoms and how can that be applicable to Moms and Dads One message of inspiration for the listeners today Resources: www.unicornmoms.com Instagram: unicornmoms Twitter: TheUnicornMomsFacebook: UnicornMoms   Tweetables: It's not just about learning about business skills, technical skills, professional skills; it's all about learning about yourself Being a mom is like hard, it's like a 24/7 Communication between the parents is the key; putting your issues aside, you have to be in this together, to benefit the kid It's very important for a son to have a father figure, to be there and to talk to about certain things that he can't talk to his mom The most important thing to raising great kids is, you have to be present you have to be there with your child at least 1 hour a day in a 24 hour cycle Nowadays there are stay-at-home moms that are on their phone constantly while  their babies are playing in the playpen or whatever Women need to just get out their comfort zones and take that chance and that risk; then great things will come out Women need to surround themselves with people who'll support them no matter what, in all aspects of their lives We get stuck in a rut, if we lose who we are (identity) because of our kids

Her backyard is a whimsical garden oasis, with a gazebo, greenhouse, and a different flower or bloom everywhere you look. In this episode, I share the story of how I met Melody and Melody gives us a deeper understanding of soil, how it's alive, and how to make it the best soil for growing. Hear all of Melody's great tips on keeping your soil rich and how plants teach us the importance of coexistence.
