Send us a textBritish L.A.-based playwright Stephen Laughton came sat in-house in the Playwright's Spotlight before the West Coast Premiere of his play One Jewish Boy. In this interview, we discuss the differences in the London, New York, and Los Angeles markets, London gatekeepers and the draw of the London Fringe and its difference to the Edinburgh Fringe, taking advantage of Covid, and the responsibilities and how playwriting applies to the Astrophysics Team at the American Museum of Natural History. Mid conversation we accept a call from Stephen's director and give a live, on-air response. We follow it up with what makes a great hook and how that provides a good story, what British playwrights sound like, stealing from the best, and moving to L.A. to do theatre. Like most Brits, Stephen's a charmer and offers some great stories and insight. Based on a true story, a sheltered little girl spends an unnerving afternoon with her estranged father and is left with only her imagination to stop time and escape impending disaster. “Five and a Half,” an unsettling drama about a little girl on an afternoon drive with her ex-con father, will make its West Coast premiere at this year's Dances With Films (DWF) Festival, June 22-July 2, 2023 at the TCL Chinese 6 Theatres in Hollywood. Based on a true story, writer-director Heidi Nyburg and producer Kristin Higgins evoke a heightened sense of peril for little Abbie (Lauren Jude Rosa) as her mother Jess (Katherine Cozumel) reluctantly gives her just-paroled husband Chuck (James Hal Hardy) permission to take Abbie for an afternoon. As the two set off in a red convertible, there is an uneasiness that surfaces and increases as we see that Chuck is not a responsible parent. Little Abbie must utilize her own imagination and grit to survive this ill-fated outing. more: getthefunkoutshow.kuci.org

Synopsis On today's date in 1940, the “Standing Room Only” signs went up early as a crowd of 23,000 stormed the Hollywood Bowl to hear the great Paul Robeson perform. On the program was Earl Robinson's “Ballad for Americans,” a work for solo voice and orchestra that was for a time one of the most popular musical works in America. Earl Robinson had studied with Copland, and in 1934 had joined the Federal Theater Project. His “Ballad for Americans” quickly became a popular concert hall vehicle for Paul Robeson, and, in election year 1940, it was even performed by the Philadelphia Orchestra at the Republican Party's National Convention. Robeson made a famous recording of the work, but nowadays “Ballad for Americans” is seldom, if ever, heard or performed. Also on the Hollywood Bowl's program for July 23, 1940, was the first complete West Coast performance of William Grant Still's Symphony No. 1, subtitled the “Afro-American Symphony” by its composer. Still had settled in Los Angeles to work for the film industry, but by 1940 had also achieved fame as the country's foremost African-American composer of concert music. Unlike “Ballad for Americans,” the “Afro American Symphony” still shows up on concert programs these days. Music Played in Today's Program William Grant Still (1895-1978) – Symphony No. 1 (Afro-American) (Detroit Symphony; Neeme Järvi, cond.) Chandos 9154
This episode of BTL Radio Show we help kick off Dances With Films film festival with filmmakers JASON LOFTUS talking ETERNAL SPRING and JENNY WALDO who talks about her feature film debut with ACID TEST, both with films at DWF. First up take a listen to first-time feature filmmaker JENNY WALDO talking about ACID TEST, making its West Coast Premiere at DWF. Knowing she wouldn't be available to join us live on the show, Jenny and I did a prerecorded interview talking about ACID TEST. Somewhat autobiographical in nature, ACID TEST is set in 1992 during the Bush-Clinton-Perot election cycle and focuses on high school senior Jenny who is trying to find herself while trying to survive in her dysfunctional family with a father with anger issues. Rebelling through music, dress, and deeds, including dropping acid in front of her parents, this journey of self-discovery is not only engaging and entertaining, but is beautiful to watch. Jenny goes in-depth about the visuals and their purposeful design, the story, the Riot Grrrl music, the hair-pulling editing process, and more. A beyond auspicious feature debut by JENNY WALDO. Then documentarian JASON LOFTUS is on hand talking about his latest film, the acclaimed, ETERNAL SPRING. A powerful look at events surrounding the 2002 hijacking of state-run television in Changchun City, China by activist believers in the Fulan Gong religion. Joining forces with renowned illustrator and comic artist Daxiong, Jason melds animation, archival footage, and current interviews with those survivors who were involved in the TV hijacking for a compelling look at history, the Chinese government, Fulan Gong, and more. Daxiong, who grew up in Changchun, fled the city when the government cracked down on the Fulan Gong believers with brutality, violence, and sentencing to forced labor camps. Using his talents as an illustrator, he brings this story to life with pen, ink, and watercolors remembering the brave, the beauty and peace that once was, and the darkness of oppression. A fascinating conversation with Jason diving into the meld of live-action interviews with Daxiong's illustrations and the process of turning those into 3D animation, the animation team, Jason's own relationship with China and its culture, and so much more. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

An ex-caregiver and convicted sex offender pleaded guilty Tuesday to sexually assaulting two women in San Diego area nursing homes. Meanwhile, the California Air Resources board has just released an updated roadmap on how the state can achieve carbon neutrality by 2045. Also, COVID-19 cases seem to be on the rise again, both across the United States and here in San Diego County. In response, the Biden administration is pushing for a new round of funding to prepare for an upcoming wave of the virus that, they say, could infect 100 million Americans by fall. Then, abortion providers are hoping that the opening of the first legal abortion clinics on the Mexican side of the border will mean safer access for women seeking services. Plus, state regulators announced this week they need more time and more information before issuing new rooftop solar rules. And finally, San Diego Opera presents the West Coast Premiere of “Aging Magician,” a hybrid opera-theatre piece that combines singing, choral work, puppetry and performance art.
This is a black arts and culture site. We will be exploring the African Diaspora via the writing, performance, both musical and theatrical (film and stage), as well as the visual arts of Africans in the Diaspora and those influenced by these aesthetic forms of expression. I am interested in the political and social ramifications of art on society, specifically movements supported by these artists and their forebearers. It is my claim that the artists are the true revolutionaries, their work honest and filled with raw unedited passion. They are our true heroes. Ashay! Matt Wilson is a true Renaissance man; a performance scholar, clown, unicycling EMT, an Emmy Award-winning tv host, medical clown and now TED Resident (and has his own ted talk coming out super soon). His eclectic career has taken him around the globe, with exploits ranging from the intimate to the epic: street performing in traffic with a youth circus in Capetown, South Africa; the PBS Kids TV favorite ‘Cyberchase: For Real’; the West Coast Premiere of the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical ‘The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee’; and the amphitheater spectacle ‘Circus’ starring Britney Spears. As a supervising clown doctor at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, he witnessed the capacity of the expressive arts to humanize experiences of care within vulnerable communities. arts in public health is a growing global movement, and he’s developing a project for investigating and deploying performance in non-traditional spaces The like hospitals, long-term care facilities, schools, and detention centers. He also helped disrupt the group fitness experience as Chief Ridiculous Officer at the cheeky NYC fitness start-up Mark Fisher Fitness. In this episode, we dive into: ● Matt’s journey from army brat, to an aspiring pediatrician, to EMT, to clown doctor, circus performer, performance scholar, to the chief ridiculous officer at Mark Fisher Fitness, and now, Ted resident and speaker. ● What exactly a clown doctor DOES and what it is really like to be in hospital rooms in dire situations as a medical clown. ● Performance as a transformational, transcendent and spiritual experience. ● How we find our purpose ONLY in concert with other human beings. ● The importance of play (both as children and adults) in teaching us boundaries, vulnerability, and trust (without even pointing it out). ● The importance of “embracing the flop” and getting comfortable with “not knowing” or having answers. ● Why our emotional health and happiness is largely related to the people we surround ourselves with. ● How the idea of vulnerability has become commodified and misused tool for performance on social media & what it REALLY entails. ● The crucial importance of establishing trust and choosing who you are vulnerable with intentionally. Ashay!
